denounced by his editors this morning. the announcement on tv came after his arrest a year ago. his crime seems to be that he was an american reporter. and a good one. he's accused of espionage for, among other things, providing up to the minute news from iran and writing reports for "the washington post" that factions inside the iranian government considered biased. >> he's innocent. he's been caught up in larger forces inside iran. >> reporter: he talked about living in iran with anthony bourdain of cnn. >> i love it. and i hate it. but it's home. >> reporter: his only contact with the outside world was with his iranian wife and his mother, who told abc news, her son wishes he could be covering the news instead of being the news. >> unfortunately, he's been in prison for the last year. he and his wife who is also a europe list have not been able to.

rezaian has been held longer than the hostages in 1979 captured at the u.s. embassy. for him, 448 days. >> he's been isolated. held. questioned for weeks and weegs on end. they don't have evidence to use against him. >> reporter: iran is said to be holding three other americans. a pastor accused of spreading christianity. saeed abedini. a former marine. amir hekmati, and robert eleventon, a former fbi ajebt who disappeared in iran several years ago. the families of these people were crushed when the iran deal did not mean the release of their loved ones. talks continue behind the scenes that could include a swap of prisoners. we turn now to the tense moments for passengers on an

allegiant airlines flight. one of the engines caught fire on takeoff. david kerley has the details. >> reporter: we don't travel 100 miles an hour often on the ground, except for trying to take off. that's when you don't want to hear a loud sound from the engine. >> negative at this time. >> reporter: calm in the cockpit. confusion for passengers on this allegiant flight taking off from las vegas. at 100 miles an hour, passengers hear a loud pop or boom. the pilot aborts the takeoff. quickly stopping the plane. fire trucks surround the aircraft. >> we're just going to sit here for a second. we have no problems. fire truck is checking. everything is tine. >> reporter: the passengers get downstairs. they're unsure what happened. >> the tire looks flat. check it out. that tire's flat. well, why didn't they just tell us that? >> reporter: the faa tells us the right open gin caught fire

on takeoff. with no reported injuries. allegiant will only say the sunday mishap was a mechanical issue. adding that passengers were reaccommodated on a replacement aircraft and that the airline will be conducting an investigation into the root cause. the issue? a fire. we'll learn what happened. all the passengers did get to fresno. their final destination. >> did you hear when they made the announcement stay on the plane, you could hear passengers going, huh uh. they're getting out of there. now to the controversial play. the playoff game between the nets and the dodgers. l.a.'s chase utley now suspended for two games for this slide that broke mets' shortstop ruben tejada's leg. t.j. holmes is at citi field where the teams play again tonight. good morning. >> reporter: yes, citi field.

not a football stadium to talk about what was the most talked about and vicious tackle of the weekend. the play results in a comeback for the dodgers. also sparked outrage and now. the result? you got one player with a broke b leg. another player suspended. and a new most hated man in new york. overnight, major league baseball taking action against the l.a. dodgers' chase utley after his slide broke the leg of ruben tejada. >> chase utley going in hard at second. tejada is down. >> reporter: utley suspended for the next two games. a decision he says he'll appeal. the dodgers say they stand behind chase utley and his decision to appeal the decision. the mets say they feel this was the appropriate course of action. the slide sparked a heated debate about the fine line between good, hard baseball and a dirty play. >> it wasn't a slide.

>> reporter: the mets up 2-1 on saturday when utley ran hard to second base. he goes into the base, sliding late and upright, barrelling into tejada, sending him flying into the air. the mets shortstop carted off with a broken right fibula. reaction to the play was mixed. >> as a base runner, your job is to clear him out of the way. >> chase out sli not a dirty player. he's not even overly aggressive. he did slide late. >> reporter: nance an uproar. there's a difference between a clean takeout slide and tackling somebody. joe torre, in a statement, called it an illegal slide. utley maintains he wasn't trying to hurt tejada. >> you're taught from a young age to try to break up double plays. that's winning baseball. >> reporter: during the 2010 season, utley, then playing for the phillies, took out tejada in a similar play. >> how about that slide by utley? >> reporter: this time, the slide cost the mets their

starting shortstop. well, baseball will try to hear that appeal from utley sometime today, before game time. we could get a ruling. and even if not, utley could still be on field tonight. new york ready to give him a new york welcome, robin? very much. who better to weigh in than mike greenberg and mike golic. the hosts of espn's "mike & mike." we're going to show the slide again. mike and mike, what say you? >> i have no problem with the slide by chase utley. i have no problem with him doing his job. his job is to break up the double play. if you want to call the play reckless, i'll go that far. dirty, i will not pi my problem is with the way the play is officiated. the officiating, the umpiring, and the baseball post season so far has been nothing short of an embarrassment. if that isn't spear feerns, i have never seen it. >> it's a hard slide. you want to say bordering reckless, you could say that.

i don't think there was intent to hurt tejada. you see hard slides all the time. go to the rules. it says in the umpire's judgment. this is the same as the nfl, robin. you can't -- you can't replay the judgment of an official. when the replay showed it was all about whether tejada touched bag or not. it was all on the umpire. >> what do you think about the suspension? it's two games. he's appealed, of course. major league baseball saying they're going the rule before game time tonight. >> they better rule before game time. they have to. and i think utley will win the appeal. just for the fact, he'll show a bunch of tape that says, this has happened a bunch. umpires have not called the player out. let alone suspended them after the fact. >> the more important point. they're not going to rule him out, which hay should have done in the first place.

good morning. breaking news is in manhattan. police are searching for a gunman after a deadly shooting in the flat iron district. it happened just after 4:00 this morning outside club -- outside a club at east 21st street and broadway. police say a gunman opened fire after being asked to leave the club. he allegedly went back to his black bmw, got a gun and started shooting. a 24-year-old woman was killed. a 25-year-old woman and a 30- year-old woman were injured. and are listed in stable condition. police do not believe the three women were the intended target. also, police have identified the person killed in

in what appears to be an unusual case. a terrifying moment caught on surveillance video. a 17-year-old girl jumping from a moving car if bridgeport, connecticut, to escape an alleged kidnapper. police say, the victim, whose name hasn't been released, was walking to school monday when this woman, 38-year-old tawanna randall offered her a ride. >> it appeared to be a good samaritan offering a ride because it was cold out this morning. >> reporter: authorities say what seemed like a good deed went wrong. the teen claiming randall began sexually assaulting her when she got in the car. the high schooler making the split second decision to escape. the video tracked the car leading them to the suspect. randall arrested over the week end. >> it was information from the community cooperating with the police that led us to discover the exact pinpoint location of the vehicle.

up. good morning. it's 8:27 on this monday, october 12th. and we are waiting to learn the name of the woman shot and killed early this morning outside a nightclub in the flat iron district. it happened about 4:00 a.m. at 21st street and broadway. eyewitnesses say that a man was kicked out of the club and then came back and started shooting. the 24-year-old woman was shot in the back. she died at the hospital. two the other women were also hurt. and investigators say the gunman took off in a black bmw. southwest airlines travelers may see more problems this morning at the ticket counter.

a technical glitch delayed hundreds of flights nationwide yesterday leading to long lines from los angeles to nashville. and southwest was forced to process customers manually by actually issuing hand-written tickets. the airline is asking travelers to print out boarding passes at home and arrive at least two hours before their departure. it's 8:28. let's take a bre

>> reporter: brandon is known for his ability to get complete strangers to share intimate details of their lives. instead of using a high-tech recording device, he takes notes on a cell phone. somewhat the first question you ask them is this. >> what is your greatest struggle right now. there's something about a stranger asking you these questions. a stranger without preconceived judgments about you. who doesn't know your story. but takes what you say at face value. there's something libber rating about that. >> reporter: the blog filled with strangers on the streets of new york has over 15 million followers on social media. those followers make up what is known as the hony community. you're also able to raise millions of dollars for people and organizations and group. how did that come about? >> we have had two fund raisers in the past six months. one raised about $2.5 million.

past six months. that is a testament of the type of people that follow humans of new york. >> reporter: you just spent time in europe. the syrian refugee crisis. you're able to tell that story differently than some media outlets are able to, don't you think? >> the very first question i asked, tell me about the day you left syria. they would start speaking in arabic. they would stop and cry. i asked the same questions as i did anybody else. >> reporter: i was curious how brandon was able to bet people to reveal so much about themselves. using me as an example. how do you approach somebody. >> excuse me, do you mind if i take your photograph. >> reporter: what started as a mock interview quickly became real.

moment in your life you felt lost most acutely. >> reporter: i know this sounds odd because i have gone through hell. the loss of my health twice. my mom, my dad. when my dog died earlier this year after almost 18 years, i mean, that's the one constant in my life through all the losses i had. k.j. was the one who got me through. it was hard to get out of bed. i was shocked. that of all the losses, my beloved pet. but it made sense in the end because, talk about unconditional love. i'm telling you, brandon, it was supposed to be a mock interview because it was difficult with a big crew to get people. i said, use me as a guinea pig. he had me bawling. this book is fantastic. it shows despite our differences, we have so much in common. humans of new york stories is

out tomorrow. >> he -- you found in emotion you didn't think you were going to share. >> the butte ity is, people ask us about our stories. we get to share our stories. most people don't. he said, even if your own home, people don't ask you these questions. to see people open up as they do. 15 million strong. they're generous. the comments section, all positives. >> that's fantastic.

george. misty made history this summer, becoming the first african-american woman to be named principal dancer of the american pal lay theater. the new documentary a ballerina's tale, chronicles her story. >> your body type is not going to hold you back. when she realized she had the opportunity to do that, it became less about just herself and more about what she can do the change the world. >> sit a beautiful, uplifting documentary. and misty, just congratulations on all well deserved that has come your way. i think people have forgotten about the injury you sustained. this is what the documentary is about. overcoming challenges. >> yes, it's a huge part of it. when i met nelson, i was performing and dealing with this injury. but hadn't yet realized the severity of it.

he captured that entire journey and process, me fetinge ing getting back on to the stage. this was an opportunity and platform for me to share and educate people on the history of african-american ballerinas that have existed for generations and generations. >> give them a voice. let people know about that. as a story teler, you were there when -- after she announced the injury. you thought, my, this is a golden opportunity to show people what it takes. >> yeah, i mean, it's a story teller. that moment of decision when a person has to fight their way through. misty just -- she's an artist. she's also an athlete. the combination was compelling. we were able to follow her through a very painful journey to back to go beyond where she was before. >> to go beyond that? i appreciated so many that not just going beyond where you are. but reaching back. looking back. wanting to show the need for

diversity when it comes to being a ballerina. >> that's so much a part of my story and experiences. something that people that are getting an opportunity to see this film that don't know a lot about the classical ballet world, to see how difficult sit to exist period. but to exist when you're a minority. so it was important for me to be that voice for so many people. and say, the it's okay to be different. you can still succeed. >> you're a powerful voice. the commercials. the broadway debut, i was there for that. and i love how you said, she's the first ballerina superstar since bahryshnikov. >> she's stepped beyond the boundaries of the classical ballet world. it hasn't been since him in the '70s to go from that world to where people at the mall know who you are. >> what is next for you?

so many opportunities coming your way. >> there's so many incredible things i never imagined i would be doing. ball hay is my priority. it's my first season as principal dancer. all my focus is on the opening. >> can you tell me the proper stance? because a ballerina's tale, is that going the -- it opens in select theaters october 14th. >> thank you. >> bless you.
