well, good wednesday morning. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm phillip mena. we begin with the showdown in vegas. the biggest night so far for the five democrats making a run for the white house. >> hillary clinton and bernie sanders got the most speaking time as they clashed on gun control. the middle east and the economy. the three lesser known contenders struggled for attention but failed to get the breakout moment they were hoping for. >> they refrained from name calling and personal attacks and sanders even claim to clinton's defense firing off what many considered was the best line of the night. >> enough of the e-mails. let's talk about the real issues facing america. >> this was the first of six planned democratic primary debates. >> it gave hillary clinton a chance to show why she is leading the pack and, of course, donald trump chimed in live tweeting blow by blow. we get the latest from abc's kenneth moton. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning. hillary clinton was tough last night. she really dominated on that

scandal didn't do much. it appears donald trump on twitter got more attention than the two candidates on stage. >> seems that way. kenneth, thanks so much. as kenneth mentioned joe biden stayed away from the spotlight last night but he was keeping a close/. >> the vice president still hasn't said if he'll throw his hat in the ring. while the five candidates were battling it out he was watching it on tv from his residence in washington. we asked matthew dowd what the debate means for the vp. >> i think when you take a look at the context of this whole debate the one clear winner i saw was joe biden who wasn't there which is if he was watching this debate or other democrats were watching this debate it would encourage him to get in because what you saw in that debate is still people not ready to take on a general election fight so i thought the clear winner was joe biden. >> that's an interesting take. media. bernie sanders was the most mentioned candidate on twitter. >> sanders also gained the most followers on twitter during the

debate adding over 28,000. clinton added 10,000 followers, o'malley, 3,000 and webb, 2,000 and by the way, donald trump, well, he gained 60,000 followers during the debate. >> and people were searching for information on key issues. according to google trends here are the top ones. health care, mths, economy, clinton's e-mails and abortion. >> stay with abc news for the latest reactions from last night's democratic debate. full coverage later on "good morning america" including an interview with donald trump. >> well, breaking news overnight from former nba and reality tv star lamar odom being treated at a las vegas hospital after being found unconscious at a brothel. medics were called in when he was found to be unresponsive. he was stabilized and driven to vegas because his 6'10" frame was too big for a medical helicopter.

>> see if he wanted something to eat and was unconscious. management called 911. ambulance came, police came. took him to the hospital in nevada. they immediately said this is not looking good. >> reports online say odom is fighting for his life and some of his organs are failing. he is reportedly unconscious and on a respirator. odom was married to khloe kardashian for four years and divorced in 2013. she is said to be by his side. breaking right now, israel is beginning to deploy hundreds of troops around the country to assist police. it's the first of the new measures to combat the increasing palestinian attacks against israeli civilians and soldiers. the israeli cabinet called for tighter security after a particularly bloody day yesterday in which three israelis and three palestinians were killed. well, here at home planned

the scene in florida where a small plane crashed into two hopes. three people reportedly killed including a young woman who lived in one of the homes in the palm beach county town of palm springs. witnesses say the aircraft dropped out of the sky and hit two homes and then burst into flames. if you have flight plans, new warning says you shouldn't be bringing any extra lithium ion batteries with you. those are the type of batteries that power cell phones, laptops and other devices. the faa is warning those batteries should not be packed in checked luggage because they can ignite and fuel fires in baggage compartments. a small number of the batteries can city be brought on board but in carry-on bags. air traffic controllers warning widespread delays are likely in the near future. their union says flying is still safe despite a chronic shortage of controllers. there are now the fewest controllers in 27 years. and 30% of active controllers are eligible to retire. the controllers union says the

workers helped put out the flames before firefighters arrived. everyone had to be evacuated. but no one was hurt. dramatic video this morning of a rescue off the san francisco coast. you can see a whale watching boat pull up to a much smaller overturned boat. two men clicking to the bottom in huge swells. they were pulled aboard the larger vessel but, unfortunately, a third passenger did not make it. the rescued men said their boat started taking on water and sank within two minutes. also caught on camera. the dramatic moments just after a woman gives birth during a long haul flight. you can see the flight attendants overcome with joy as they hold the little girl. the flight on the way from taiwan to los angeles when mom went into labor way ahead of schedule. the flight was diverted to anchorage leaving some to wonder whether the newborn will be an american citizen. well, it's the stuff of fantasy. a pill to replace exercise. researchers are, well on the
