that didn't stop hundreds of travelers from tweeting their displeasure about the lines, the miserable welcome here to kennedy that they found tonight. no one allowed in to the country. no one allowed to check in for flights leaving the country for nearly two hours. >> reporter: welcome to the usa, now stand in line. passengers who spent hours on overseas flights found themselves trapped in a windowless maze at kennedy airport, in fact at airports across the country, after a key computer system that checks passengers against terror watch lists simply failed. >> it's crazy. i never saw anything like this. >> reporter: things were even worse upstairs at departures where airlines couldn't check anyone in either. passengers tweeted pictures of the miserable scene. >> the people up there were all cursing. there was people that couldn't walk. it was crazy. people in the wheelchair that were crying, waiting there for hours. >> reporter: finally bleary-eyed travelers were able to emerge from the customs hall.

first on eyewitness news, a clerk sucker-punched at a bodega in manhattan then robbed. surveillance video shows a man at the counter at a deli in midtown. he suddenly sucker-punches the clerk in the face, knocking him off his chair. the suspect then frantically grabbed as many scratch-off lottery tickets as he could before dashing out the door, leaving the clerk stunned. >> thank god he's recovered and he's okay but it's scary for the next person that this is going to happen to. very upsetting. >> the store owners criticizing the nypd tonight saying it took cops more than two hours to respond to the robbery, giving the crook plenty of time to get away. police say a dispatch problem caused the delay and they're looking in to it. new york mayor de blasio hosting the first town hall meeting of his term. the focus, the soaring cost of rent. hundreds turning out for the meeting held in washington heights. that neighborhood has

family and friends remembering michael nolan. he died on friday, three weeks after he was shot at a yonkers burger king. he was a star pitcher at his high school and had been drafted by the oakland as. also happening tomorrow, a memorial service in bloomfield, new jersey for the truck driver who died in that fiery new jersey turnpike crash. dalip kumar's ashes will be sent to his native india. losing control after swerving to avoid a mattress that fell off another vehicle. no one else was injured in that crash. traffic is moving again tonight along a stretch of the long island expressway after two accidents snarled the commute. both accidents happened between 56 and 57. the eastbound l.i.e. was closed for several hours in hauppauge where a motorcyclist was seriously hurt after a crash. a suffolk county police cruiser was involved in a separate crash.

er new at 11:00, the most unusual and cruel home robbery. it happened in the bronx. burglars breaking in to an apartment and stealing not just a couple's money and possessions but also their dog, their 2-month-old puppy, and that's what they want back. eyewitness news reporter jim dolan with the story in the sound view section. >> i want her back. i don't care. they can keep everything else. i just want the baby back. >> reporter: whoever stole luna, a 3-month-old husky puppy, sure didn't do it because he loves animals. the thief who broke the lock on the door and ransacked the house and stole $1,000 of the children's birthday money that was kept in this box also attacked the family's other three dogs with pepper spray. >>

they were so quiet. when i got upstairs everything was a mess. >> reporter: he came home from work tuesday around noon to the mess the burglars left behind. his dogs had paint splattered on them from being hit with a paint ball gun. you can see where one shot missed and hit the wall. three of his dogs were attacked with the pepper spray. but the puppy, luna, was gone. >> i want luna back. >> reporter: the family is putting up reward posters in an effort to get luna back. the house of course can be cleaned up. the family will miss the money that was stolen but that's temporary too. what they really want here is to get their dog back. >> money is not everything. puppy is like a family. you cannot re place. >> reporter: jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. folks in new jersey fed up with the noise from traffic at newark airport sounding off at a public meeting. port authority officials met with concerned

residents in newark to explain what's being done to combat noise levels. the agency is paying $6 million to study the noise problem but that's not going to be finished until november of 2017. >> you hear the loud noise coming from the plane and sometimes they feel as if they're landing right on top of your house. some days it seems as if it's nonstop. they fly by constantly. >> the study will be used to develop new aircraft noise maps at newark and teterboro airports that will determine the homes and businesses that will be eligible for federal funds to sound proof their homes. the man who revolutionized the new york city restaurant scene tonight turning the industry on its head again. danny myer, the founder announcing all 13 of his restaurants will start eliminating tipping. meyer says instead he will raise menu prices to better compensate all workers even those who don't get a share of tips like cooks and dish washers. big ripple effect

a wild crash on a highway caught on camera. a dash cam was running when a pickup truck lost control then crashed in to another vehicle in southern california. the truck flew off the road and was launched up and over a steep embankment as the other vehicles spun out on the road. the pickup truck landed in a car dealership. the driver was critically hurt. in tonight's health alert, just because it's over the counter doesn't mean it's safe. a new federal study estimates dietary supplements send 23,000 americans to the emergency room every year. report says the
