and cubs both well-known for heartbreak, about to step on one of baseball's biggest stages, the mets came home from los angeles this morning and arrived at citi field after a long flight. no workout today. back to the ballpark tomorrow. the cubs did work out this afternoon. they've been waiting for a couple days to get this going. the series with the daughters went the full five games. ended late last night with a mets victory and a celebration in the clubhouse. nothing out of hand because the mets know as well as anybody, there's still work to be done. the two managers used to work together with the angels. >> we became very good friends. i'm slide on him a lot. obviously has become extremely successful. i'm happy for him and proud of him. >> he's got a great mind. we laugh together, we work together, i'm happy for his success. >> the baseball season is extended. there are more games to play. nlcs is up next and now to a fan base which for years has taken every met loss personally.

-- giordanos. expanding extra subway trains to make sure everyone gets to the stadium to cheer on the mets. a reminder, channel 7 is your station for the mets road to the world series. stay with us at abc7ny for complete coverage. turning to the other news of the night, off-duty nypd officer in the hospital after she was stabbed in the neck. it happened in cunningham park in queens. kristin thorne is at the scene with the very latest. >> reporter: the officer has been on the force for the past 14 years assigned to the manhattan south area. now recovering at north shore university. just for observation. i want to show you at cunningham park the bathroom back here the alleged assault happened. police say a woman assaulted this officer while she was trying to rob her of her purse. >> she reported she was cut in

the neck on the left side. by a sharp object. >> reporter: police say the victim was walking her dog in cunningham park around 2:00 this afternoon when a woman came up behind her around a restroom and tried to take her purse. a struggle ensued, police say the 50 a -- 55-year-old suspect's last the officer in the throat. >> we did recover a pair of scissors in the area. we are unclear whether or not those were used. and we are continuing the search at this point. >> reporter: a parks worker nearby heard the officer screamed and ran to help. >> parks department employee watched the subject flee. was able to provide a description. and when the subject was apprehended, that employee made a tentative i.d. but we're not going to rely wholly on that at this point. >> reporter: officers located a woman meeting the suspect description inside the park. she has been taken in for questioning.

jill perez was around the bathroom at the time and saw the officer right after she was attacked. >> she was on the phone and saying, a cop got stabbed. but she was on the phone with 911 and she was speaking of herself. so at this point we weren't sure what was going on. a few of us -- she was pointing in that direction. so we ended up running towards the parking lot on the other side of the park over there thinking we might encounter the suspect. but she was gone at that point already. >> reporter: the suspect is now being questioned at the 100 seventh precinct. the officer's injuries are being described as minor. live in fresh meadows, kristin thorne, channel 7. a disturbing new details about the mother charged with killing her baby by throwing her 6-month-old out a window. tenisha fearon was licensed to run a day care. she had the license for two years until she let it expire. neighbors say before yesterday

come forward after a devastating hit and run more than a week ago. he left a 22-year-old senior at montclair state university in critical condition. she had massive internal injuries here in st. joseph's medical center in patterson, where friends and family have not left her side. but they were left begging for answers on eyewitness news last sunday. >> my baby sister is in such critical condition. please come forward. >> saw this in the news. he realized he was involved in this. he's felt horrible ever since. >> reporter: he tells his lawyer he had just pulled out of this mcdonald's parking lot thursday night of last week. he was on his way overnight job. that's when he realized he hit something. >> he knew that he hit something. absolutely. he looked backwards, didn't see anything on the roadway, he continued on, he panicked. >> was he drinking? >> absolutely not.
