series. >> mad harvey retired the first dozens batters he faced in a strong performance, and daniel murphy and travis denard homered as the mets beat the field. >> we have team coverage of the mets as they get set for game 2. cefaan kim is with the fans. we begin with sports anchor rob powers in citi field. >> joe, sandra, inside a very cold citi field right now, and you are right, one down, three to go for these mets, and there's signs of life here at citi field now, a couple hours before game time. the mets have now just taken the field. they have the chance tonight to win another game and go up 2-0 in the series before they head to chicago. they earned that first win last night to get the jump on the cubs. you are right. it is all about power last night. matt harvey limited the cubs to four hits, struck out 9. the

they want this team to achieve legendary status. eyewitness news reporter cefaan kim is right outside citi field with the fans tonight. >> reporter: three hours before first pitch, and you can see fans have already started showing up at mcfadden's here at citi field. it will be another cold night for met's fans here at citi field. if this stadium had a roof on it, it would have provided some warmth. fans say the energy inside would have blown the lid off this thing anyway. after that dramatic win in game one, the mets are now three wins away from advancing to the world series. that moment is not lost on fans. that mets fever has their temperature rising. it's been 15 years since the mets last made an appearance in the world series, almost 30 since they won it. mets fans are fired up, and we found a bunch of fans who have now been to every met's post season home game this season.

or facebook, and be sure to use the hashtag abc7ny. if fans and players thought it was chilly during game 1, wait until tonight. temperatures are dropping, and it feels more like mid-november than october. the forecast for first pitch calls for a temperature of only 45 degrees. that's without the windchill. people all across the new york metropolitan area felt the better chill today. look at people in rutherford new jersey, all bundled up as they walked around. lots of people on the west side to stay warm. let's get a check on the chilly meteorologist jeff smith. >> tonight will be the coldest night we've had since april the 1st. temperatures in the upper 40s right now in the park and at flushing. check this out, you go north and west you're only sitting at 36 degrees at monticello, and we have had reports at times during the afternoon of snowflakes falling, especially

we also got reports on long island of flurries. 44 is your windchills. wind still gusting upwards of 20 miles per hour. we have freeze warning in effect through tonight through monday at 10 a.m. for much of the tri-state region. the only exception being the five boroughs of new york city, southern parts of say coastal nassau county and coastal parts of new jersey. elsewhere this effectively will be ending the growing season. any type of potted plants you have outside you want to bring them outdoors. they will die in this type of weather. here's our radar picture right now showing these scattered sprinkles. many of these are not reaching the ground. you look on here, a little bit of white showing up, especially on the highest elevations. that means there's a little bit of snow falling in some of these locations. we have video from two different locations in the tri- state area: this here from stormville in dutchess county, some snow falling there, and next half hour we'll show you some video that we shot from the poconos we got from a

viewer in the poconos in pennsylvania. it's going to be a cold night coming up tonight. they've had several inches of snow, 8 inches of snow coming in off lake ontario. here's that nlcs game, two forecasts, 45 feeling more like the 30s. you've got to bundle up. we'll have that full accuweather forecast coming up later in the half hour. we'll see you then. a sad update to a story we've been closely following on eyewitness news. a 12-year-old girl on long island struck by a stray bullet has died. dejah joyner has pronounced dead at winthrop hospital in minneola last night. she got hit by a bullet while standing in her living room. >> wort that dejah had passed rattled this community. folks have been coming out and leaving balloons at this memorial. these are friends who knew her prognosis was not good but were

still hoping, praying the 12- year-old would pull through this. just a few hours ago, dejah's mom and dad keisha and damon joyner made their first appearance since their daughter's passing, clutching one of her stuffed animals, the couple walked out of their home the same place where friday night dejah was standing in her living room. a stray bullet pierced the front window striking the 7th grader in her head. today members of the church where she went held a prayer judge ill. sources tell eyewitness news detectives are looking at surveillance video that shows someone getting out of a car in front of dejah's home. a second fire and misses the intended target. it's not clear who the bullet was for but those who knew dejah say a brilliant light was dimmed. >> we pray with them, talk with them, they're in deep pain, crying without ceasing. they're broken.

only that, they are relatives. they are related to other members in my congregation, yes, so the pain is felt here. >> reporter: for the mayor of hempstead wayne hall is organizing what he calls an evening of outrage. he wants folks to come out tuesday night at 7 to express their frustration that once again a family is in mourning over a loved one shot and killed. a $75,000 reward is out there. also coming up at 6, you'll learn more about dejah. she was a girl scout, a ray of sunshine in this neighborhood. a little girl who was loved by so many people. for now we're live in hempstead, kemberly richardson channel 7 eyewitness news. new details police say they're now investigating the death of a woman in queens as a homicide. investigators say 28-year-old miriam velez's burned body was

detectives are looking for her boyfriend, carlos leon. she died hours before she was set to return to her native guatemala. overseas now, more violence in the mideast. one israeli has been killed and six others wounded in an attack israel. police say two attackers entered that station and began shooting and stabbing it is the latest in a month- long series of stabbings and other attacks that increased security measures have failed to halt, and it comes as bill de blasio makes his first visit city. jerusalem. >> his fourth visit here, his first since taking office, mare your de blasio arrives to a tensions and escalating violence. >> a painful moment here in israel. it's a moment when i'm certainly here in solidarity

at the same time we have to think of those who are trying to move things forward. >> determined to do his visit slightly differently than his predecessor he scheduled a sit down at the hand in hand school meeting both palestinian and israeli students. he considered a trip to the west bank, though, ultimately ruled that out due to security concerns. visiting the western wall twice during his weekend, he met with mayors of both jerusalem and tel aviv and last night visited a hospital treating those wounded in recent attacks. when you're under attack, we feel under attack too, and i'm honored to be here in that spirit of solidarity and a sense of common destiny. >> finishing out his visit meeting prime minister netanyahu and visiting the holocaust memorial, he called for the world to fight indifference and hatred, especially at what he called this painful moment. sandra, joe. >> thank you. secretary of state john kerry

>> just got a report from the national weather service that bridgeport set their daily snowfall record today. a trace of snow. they had a couple of flakes that came down. that had never happened on october the 18th before. >> i don't think they want it to happen again. >> i don't think they want it to happen this early again. we head outside, it's a cold evening out there. you're really going to bundle up if you're headed out to the met's game, that picture over towards central park and over towards midtown. 48 degrees. that wind is northwest at 8 gusting up to 20 miles per hour. the low humidity has made it so a lot of these rain and snow showers haven't actually made it all the way down to the ground, but in the higher elevations especially, it's been a different story. i showed you that video before from up in dutchess county, higher elevations getting snow flurries. pressure 30.29 and rising. we just eked out 50 degrees in the city after a 38, way, way below normal. 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of the year.

the sun going down in a little under an hour at 6:12. temperatures will tumble into the 20s north and west with a hard freeze, not only north and west though, also on the pine barrens of long island and just inland of the jersey shore, you're probably getting into the 20s as well. low to mid-30s tonight for new york city and the coast, so it won't be a hard freeze here, but a widespread frost in parts of the city, and then still cool tomorrow followed by a big turn around on tuesday. wait until you see the seven- day forecast. it's a big roller coaster ride on the upward side. 48 in newark right now, 48 at flushing right near citi field. you're 50 at jfk airport. 34, though, so near freezing already at monticello. you didn't really get out of the 30s in those areas well north and west of the city. there's that freeze warning that we have in effect on the radar showing a couple of showers above rain and/or snow, mainly in the form of some snowflakes up over parts of

lows tonight down into the 20s in widespread areas north and west of the city. highs tomorrow back up to about 52 or so. there will be a lot of sunshine. there will be a whole lot less wind. it will feel better. accuweather forecast for tonight, a chilly breeze this evening, and then the wind calms down. it will be cold with patchy clouds a low down to 36. still cool tomorrow, plenty of sun. the high getting up to 52. tomorrow night clear, not as cold. we're down to 47 in the 30s in the suburbs. here's your accuweather seven- day forecast, check this out. tuesday, warmer, 68. how about 71 for wednesday and thursday. the only shot at maybe getting a shower would be thursday afternoon, a weak front moves on by. behind that front it does turn cooler, more seasonal for friday and saturday. mid-60s again by next sunday. >> so there you have it. >> that's a turn around. >> big one. >> all right. thank you, jeff. >> coming up on eyewitness news, the nypd officer who

game 2 of the nlcs. here is another live look out at citi field in queens. >> a mets 3rd base coach tim tuffle is a man who bridges the mets teams of yesterday with the team of today. the greenwich connecticut resident was the mets 2nd baseman when the team won the title in 1986. eyewitness news sports anchor rob powers just spoke with him. >> the mets returned to the scene of the win tonight, but to make the game 1 victory mean that much more they come back tonight against the cubs and try to get the win in game number 2, and for a look back at last night and a look back at the championship drive of 86 and this year, what could be this year, tim tuffle 1st base coach, first of all let's gauge the temperature in that room, the guys coming back after the game last night. >> i think they're very ready. it's sunday. it's football sunday and they're all watching football games and relaxed. really nothing's changed. i think the guys are confident

going to stay the course. >> does it remind you at all of what happened here in 86, the team that you were on? >> well, 86 we had such a big lead all yearlong. we didn't have that luxury this year. this year was a dog fight right to the end, but going into the playoffs it's the same thing. we were the underdogs against boston. i think they were the team to beat in the world series. i think when we went out to l. a. we were the underdogs there, so we had similarities in that respect. i think if we take this series here the emotions are very high for the world series. >> have you had a chance? i know you're working while we're enjoying the gauge but have you had a chance to sit back and enjoy this run that this team has been on? >> yeah. i mean, you know, i've got the best seat in the house. i get to watch all the action. this is actually a little less nerving than playing, you know, as a coach being a player, you know, you're thinking about all

erupted in flames. muller was pronounced dead at the scene. state police are investigating what caused him to lose control. new at 5:00, a group of motorcyclists gathered for a party in suffolk county, but police had different plans. they arrested 11 bikers at duffy's ale house in lindenhurst. officers seized eight guns, a variety of drugs in three vehicles. those arrested faced drugs and weapons charges. the bikers had gathered to relaunch long island's pagan motorcycle club. some fireworks in the race for president today. two of the biggest names in the republican field traded a tax on tv. plus, hillary clinton weighed in on and when he should decide to join the campaign. abc's devin dwyer reports from washington. >> overnight vice president biden left his political deliberations in delaware for a glitzy gala in new york city. >> it may be the greatest honor

in iowa next week that goes head to head with bernie sanders and his big bash, rocking the burn. >> the vice president's office tells us officially he has no plans to go to iowa this week or put on a rival concert. biden will be back here at the white house tomorrow for a conference on climate change. deadly chaos broke out at a zombie themed festival in florida. now police are searching for the shooter who opened fire on a crowd of costumed revelers in the street. 20-year-old expavius tieerer taylor was killed in the shooting at the zombiecon in fort myers just before midnight. four others suffered nonlife- threatening injuries. eyewitnesses and emergency responders described the panic and confusion at the scene. >> we started running because we saw a hoard of people running and we heard two really loud bangs. >> that many people, there was people taking cover, you know,

officers were running towards the shots, and that's when we located victims. >> authorities are reviewing surveillance videos from the area for images of the gunman. no motive or suspect has been identified. friends and relatives are saying their final good-byes to a young mother who was killed outside of a manhattan nightclub. funeral services started about an hour ago for walikque faussett until queens. the 24-year-old was shot near motivo nightclub in the flat iron neighborhood early monday. dalone jamison opened fire after getting kicked out of motivo. he is charged in a city police officer stopped an armed robbery on a brooklyn subway plat tomorrow. the nypd says a man with this razor said open your pockets as he walked towards officer daniel nervous in the j street station.

mervis who had pulled out his 24-year-old joshua muniz of brownsville. happening tomorrow, federal crews will begin the work of cleaning up the site of a connecticut. that fire happened in an abandoned factory in bridgeport over a year ago. officials say the environmental begin cleaning and decontaminating the area as part of a $4.2 million grant. we stay in connecticut. a deadly accident fall at yale university, a man working at yale central power plant fell from a ladder inside a smokestack yesterday. a university spokeswoman says the victim fell about 50 feet. it took rescuers an hour to cut through the side of the smokestack to rescue him. he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead just a short time later. in suffolk county, police are trying to figure out how a

and a drugstore in central islip. islip avenue was closed when that truck rammed into the pharmacy last night. police are still looking for the driver who left the scene. an armed suspect is in custody after being shot by police in the parking lot of a pennsylvania wal-mart. eyewitnesses say the gunman was firing shots from a semiautomatic rifle in that afternoon. the gunfire. no one else was hurt. eyewitnesses ducked for cover and called police. >> i heard gunfire, and i came down and people were hiding behind their vehicles. >> like nine cop cars pulled up and someone started shooting, started ducking. they said nobody's getting hurt. >> the suspect is accused of firing shots a the responding officers. those officers returned fire and hit the man twice. he is said to be undergoing surgery. mexican authorities are searching the rugged mountains

he was flown in his home state after he escaped from prison in july. it captured the pilot who flew guzman into hiding on a small plane. a statement from mexico's security cabinet says guzman injured his leg and face while escaping mexican marines in the rugged terrain. opening statements begin tomorrow in the case against a man accused in the mob heist immortalized in the movie good vincent asaro was arrested last year after being accused of taking part in the $6 million robbery at kennedy airport. the now 80-year-old helped plan that heist in 1978. he's accused of spending most of the $750,000 that he got in the robbery at the racetrack. a new look at sleep medicine. coming up on eyewitness news there's a new drug for people suffering from insomnia. consumer reports put it is to the test.

people in new york city living with alzheimer's disease. for people with insomnia, there's a new prescription sleep drug. it's called belsomra, it acts on the brain a little differently than current medications like ambien. consumer reports took a closer look to see how well it works and how safe it is. here's anchor sade baderinwa. >> as many as 70 million americans are all too familiar with tossing and turning, constantly checking the time and waking up exhausted. susan hadara worries how her insomnia will effect her waking hours. >> i have to be careful i'm not crashing my car or walking into a wall. >> ahh sleep, and your doctor about belsomra. >> this tv ad promotes its new sleep medication and how it's different chemically from older medications. consumer reports worked with medical experts at dartmouth medical school to analyze the effectiveness and safety.

people who took 15 or 20- milligrams of belsomra got an average of about 16 minutes more sleep per night and fell asleep about 6 minutes faster compared to those who took a placebo. >> the studies show that the small improvements in sleep didn't necessarily translate into people feeling more refreshed. >> one of the most common side effects is next day drowsiness. that happened more than twice as often with people who were in the test group versus people who took applause bow. >> there were rare reports of hallucinations and temporary paralysis. >> since all prescription sleep medications can have serious side effects and offer only a limited before the we recommend trying other strategies first and avoiding drugs if at all possible. >> for people with occasional insomnia this can help, quit smoking, cutting back on calf fee and alcohol in the afternoon and evening and not watching tv or using a computer in bed.

tu the dreamers who hope to transform an abandoned underground trolley terminal into a park are now testing their concept in manhattan. the low line lab just opened on the lower east side. rooftops solar panels and mirrors send sunlight down into the warehouse, much like what would happen in this future park. dozens of plant varieties are spread out across the essex street space. >> we're hoping to get tons of people in here, hopefully thousands of people will come and visit the lab, tell us what they think engage with science and technology, maybe learn a little something about how we can grow plants underground. potentially we can come up with more inspiring ideas.
