>> reporter: that's right, dave. you can only imagine how that woman must have felt. she left her car running with her infant niece in the backseat. she went into the subway, that restaurant that's behind me. she went in to get a sandwich, and moments later she turned around and the car and the baby were gone. but, yes, this story has a happy ending. it ended happily and quickly. the baby and her aunt and her mother were reunited after the thieves abandoned the car a short distance away. now this all happened around 8:00 this morning outside the subway restaurant here on union boulevard in bay shore. the car was found abandoned on a side street just a short distance away as i said after a massive and intense search. they had k-9s out here, helicopters out here. they searched the neighborhood surrounding the restaurant. the child was perfectly fine, and the thieves remained at large late this afternoon.

aunt who was baby-sitting the child at the time. but residents here we spoke with said it was irresponsible. >> i'm glad they got the baby. i'm glad the baby's okay, but i think she'll be more cautious now and not leave her child in the car. >> maybe it's a wake-up call to a lot of people that might be watching this. >> yes, it's a wake-up call because you never know these days. people are crazy. >> reporter: and, again, to recap, the child is fine. the car has been found. the thieves, however, have not. anybody who has information that might help police solve this case is urged to call the suffolk county police. a news conference i'm told is now scheduled for 12:30 this afternoon. we'll have much more on this developing story on eyewitness news first afternoon. we're live in bay shore long island, n. j. burkett channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you n. j. turning to the intense fire that destroyed several homes and businesses in westchester county. firefighters remain on the scene nearly 11 hours after

flames began to burn through a row of buildings in mount vernon. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer live at the scene. >> reporter: at this noon hour, you can see behind me here a lot of this rubble is still smoldering. they've been pouring water on the hot spots the better part of the day. that deli you see, sal's deli, it was very popular. it has been destroyed along with four other businesses. >> it didn't take long fire officials say for this blaze to quickly engulf the small strip of stores here on grammarton avenue in mount vernon. >> we had tremendous smoke pushing out, intense heat in the basement and it ran across the roof into the other stores. >> there was a three-story apartment structure above the stores. residents safely escaped but lost everything. >> in under one hour the building fully collapsed, the residential area did collapse. >> they fought this fire with just 37 firefighters doing the best they could. next door to the fire is nelson mandela high school where power had been shut off due to the fire.

a rescue at sea, a skydiving stunt takes a frightening turn and a nearly $2000 tip. just some of the stories that were caught on camera and caught our attention. we begin with a dramatic rescue in the waters off the coast of florida that was captured by a passenger on a royal caribbean cruise ship. a passenger standing on deck as the boat left port canaveral, spotted a small raft, moments later a coast guard helicopter was spotted circling it. seven cubans were rescued from that raft. it turns out the survivors had been stuck out at sea for ten days with just a small amount of water and crackers. also caught on camera,

the weekend as wind blows a parachutist way off course. the man was part of a four- person team scheduled to jump on sunday. the performance was canceled due to high winds. parachutists had already jumped. he landed on top of a vendor's tent knocking over tons of merchandise. the man suffered a broken limb. thankfully that's all that happened. >> how do they take off $1900 zone. >> oh, heck no. >> oh heck yes. >> oh, yeah. cameras rolling as a pizza delivery man in alaska gets surprised with the tip of a lifetime. it happened at a church, parishioners collected $1900 for him. while at the pizza shop recently the pastor learned that the worker is dealing with high medical women. he encouraged congregants to donate, and they banded together and they made it happen for that gentleman right there. pretty amazing. >> it sure is. it's great to see.

the fire. no one was hurt, 12 people were displaced. fire officials are trying to figure out the cause. >> and mets fans are celebrating today after beating the cubs in game 2 of the national league championship series last night. game 3 against the cubs tomorrow in chicago. the mets are now two wins away from securing a spot in the world series. that sounds pretty good to say. hello, i'm david novarro. >> and i'm shirleen allicot. we begin this half hour with the death of a young long island. >> dejah joyner's classmates returned to school for the first time since her death. the 12-year-old died over the weekend when a stray bullet killed her. this afternoon grief counselors are there to help students through the day. eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson in hempstead with more. >> reporter: as you can imagine, a really tough day for everyone here at hempstead middle school. dejah was a 7th grader. she was at school on friday like all of her friends, went home for the weekend. no one imagined the 12-year-old

of course this is all very upsetting and confusing to these kids. one way they're working through their pain expressing their loss is with messages to dejah. the kids are working on a huge pink banner. a beautiful memorial to an incredible little girl who was a girl scout. she loved to dance, she loved to sing. the district has mobilized its crisis intervention team to meet and talk with students not only here but at the high school where dejah's brother plays football. here at the middle school, the more than 1500 students are trying to get their minds around what happened. friday night dejah was standing in her living room when a stray bullet meant for someone else pierced the front window and pierced dejah in the head. she died in the hospital saturday night. some of her classmates who lived near her are telling school officials today they are afraid realizing it could have been them. the principal tells me these children are experiencing

really a range of emotions. >> i have comforted a couple of students who had just been with her, a student that just says but mr. rios, you know, she told me she'll be back, and i was waiting for her at the soccer field to watch soccer practice. those raw emotions like that. i think right now the best thing that we can do is just be there for them, give them the hug that they need at this time, and share with them that pain. >> reporter: touching, dejah's plastic birthday crown right there. she just turned 12 and wore it at school all day. she even gave it to the social worker here at the school whose birthday was the next day. she says she will keep that crown forever. grief counselors will remain here at the school for as long as needed. the principal also said one thing he made sure to tell the kids they asked about dejah, they assured them that the doctors came into the room and told them because all of this

time for the feed, the stories that get their social start on social media are now getting shared and re-tweeted over the net. we start with friday night- lights in pittsburgh. normally the band,s marching different times. in pittsburgh a high school marching band took the field before the home game. the opposing team refused to yield continuing their pregame warmups right in the middle of the show. are you kidding? the band posted the video on their facebook page. it didn't even matter to the players that the band was playing the national anthem. can you hear the boos? the football players are accused of shoving and taunting the band members. this was a hot mess. the referees ended up issuing the deer valley high school team a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. when the game started.

>> so even the band getting rough and tumble. >> the band member should have whacked them with the tuba. >> they did have the tuba on their side. a state trooper who offered a helping hand is going viral. a woman in alabama saw the trooper at a mcdonald's drive through. she thought he was buying lunch when she saw this, he helped a homeless man out of the suv and handed him a meal. the guy was said to be disabled. he says he hadn't eaten in three days and was trying to get to family in north carolina. that trooper treated him to a hot meal and a ride for part of his journey. the woman snapped a photo of the two and it quickly became an online sensation. >> glad they captured that. more than 3 million people have viewed a photo of an overprotective dad. i think we can understand this moment. an overprotective dad sharing a tender moment with his daughter's boyfriend. in the picture benjamin shock is hugging the teen. >> you're embarrassing me dad.
