we will have live coverage at 11:00 and update the game at abc7ny through the night and follow rob and laura on twitter for updates. bill bratton ripped into the officers that let a prisoner get away calling it an embarrassment for the department. the hunt is on for 39-year-old gerald brooks. warrant officers were escorting him to a van when he made a break for it. this happened in the east new york section of brooklyn. that is where eyewitness news reporter darla miles is live for us now with the latest. darla? >> reporter: well, diana, it's been about 12 hours now and there has been no sign of gerald brooks. but police say they last saw him running near new lots and georgia avenue in east new york. i spoke to an eyewitness that said they saw the three officers trying to take brooks into custody right here near this area but there was a scuffle and brooks took off running down the street. >> an embarrassment to themselves in terms of professional skills or lack of

escape in the city and they will be dealt with appropriately for that incompetence. >> reporter: a career criminal wanted for domestic violence and assault among other offenses is able to get away from an experienced nypd sergeant and two investigators. >> very concerned when somebody is in handcuffs can flee from three of my officers and they can't catch him. >> he has been locked up 54 times in the past. >> reporter: gerald brooks was picked up by three members of the warrant squad on sheffield avenue tuesday morning. minutes later he got away. >> they brought him downstairs and put him in the van. he was able to push one of the detectives out of the way and he escaped. >> they are an embarrassment to themselves, the unit and this department and they will create a lot more work for their deputy. we won't tolerate it. i'm getting tired of it.

-- brooks is the 5th suspect that escaped this year. take wreck harlem ran off in harlem. the escape was caught on video. in july arthur collins got out of a holding cell at the 25th precinct barefoot. in august, austin stevenson escaped from the 25th precinct after pushing an officer. and in august, tiffany new man lied to officers telling them she was pregnant and needed to go to the bathroom and she ran off. >> if the cops would just pay attention to their responsibilities, a lot of this stuff would stop. >> reporter: now, the chief of the department, james o'neil once headed up the warrant squad. he said he knows these three officers personally and they are responsible for hundreds of good arrests and he knows that they are tremendously embarrassed regarding this incident. reporting live, darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> darla, thank you. fire officials say there is no risk tonight that a building under construction damaged by a

the fire broke out around 3:00 this morning on west 17th street. firefighters say the flames spread quickly because the sprinklers in the building were removed. there were floors and construction materials laying around. >> the scariest part was waking up to smoke filling the entire street. i open the door and it was a white cloud of smoke. at one point you can see the smoke getting sucked back into the building. >> city officials say most of the people evacuated from five other buildings will be allowed home later today. a sidewalk shed is being erected to protect falling debris. 12 people are homeless in new jersey after a fast-moving fire tore through two homes. it broke out around 4:00 this morning on river street in lodi and quickly spread. newscopter 7 was overhead as firefighters battled the flames. fortunately no one was hurt but river at myrtle are closed indefinitely while the fire department continues working at the scene.

who killed a mother and her four children with a meat clever in brooklyn will spend the rest of his life behind bars. the judge handed down a 125 year sentence, 25 years for each victim. prosecutors say he was the cousin of the mother's husband. he was staying with the family in their sunset park apartment when the 2013 attack happened. he later confessed to the crime and took a guilty plea. >> the hunt is on to find the near. the 12-year-old was hit in the head by a stray bullet as she sat in the living room. $75,000 reward is being offered to find her killer. a surprise visit to jerusalem by the u.n. secretary general. he is urging calm in the region and trying to ease tensions between israelis and

sides should head back to the negotiating table. dozens have been killed over the past month from random attacks and military action. in 2016 could vice president joe biden be closer to running for president. today with walter mondale in d.c. during the event he made some comments that political analysts say show contrast with democratic front-runner hillary clinton. he spoke about his relationship with the president saying he and mr. obama have never had an i deological disagreement. if biden does run, at this point, most democratic voters say they would throw their support behind hillary clinton. a new poll shows more than half of those surveyed would choose her. that is a jump of 12 percentage points. by den has 16%. late today jim webb says he is dropping his presidential campaign.

we have newscopter 7 live over that scene. the other breaking news that we are keeping an eye on is two people have just been hurt by a car. this happened in the bronx. we got newscopter 7 over the scene there earlier. this happened at 167th street and webster. this is in the morrisania section. details about this crash are still coming in. two people have been taken to lincoln hospital. their conditions are unknown. we do know that the intersection in that area is closed off. we have a crew on the way and will bring you the latest once we get it. meanwhile, what started as a traffic stop on long island turned into a deadly wrong way crash. two people were killed. police say a woman sped off and drove the wrong way with cops in pursuit on the northern state parkway slamming into another car in dix hills. stacey sager takes a closer look at the department's policy for chases like this one. stacey? >> reporter: well, sade, this

what we know is that a police pursuit like this one is supposed to be approved by a field supervisor. suffolk police have yet to say if that was the case. what they have said is the woman they stopped this morning definitely put an officer's life in jeopardy. it was 2:40 this morning on the northern state parkway in dix hills and two drivers were killed when their vehicles collided. one of them completely innocent, the other a female suspect trying to avoid police and driving westbound in the eastbound lanes. at a brief news conference in which suffolk police took no questions, they took reporters it started with a traffic stop in central islip. a female driver under suspicion for dwi and having a stolen vehicle. >> the suspect refused to comply. she got in to the driver's seat of that vehicle and fled from

>> reporter: police policy in suffolk county clearly states, quote, officers shall not pursue suspects the wrong way on interstates or other controlled access highways or divided roadways unless specifically authorized by the field supervisor. police haven't said if a supervisor new about this chase, they did imply the actions of the female driver were dangerous. >> when fleeing from the scene she almost struck the police officer from the scene. >> reporter: drivers at exit 41 and 42 on the northern state were rerouted all morning long as the highway was closed and the investigation only beginning. now, also, according to suffolk county police policy, this field supervisor can terminate a pursuit like this if the threat outweighs the need to apprehend the driver. a lot of gray area here and police have yet to release the names of the two drivers who were killed.

sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, stacey. former nba star lamar odom is making big strides in his recovery after being moved from los angeles. a family statement said he was taken back to his home state yesterday but they did not reveal where he wax getting treatment and that the star has taken a few steps. he was found unconscious at a brothel in nevada a week ago today. caught on camera, rescuers coming to the aid of a woman trapped in rising floodwaters. her minivan got stuck in a deluge created by heavy rain near phoenix, arizona. rescuers got to her just in time getting her a life vest and helmet and guiding her to safety. >> wow. >> 1 1/2 to 3 inches around the phoenix area. you know the type of run off there. >> it's so dry out there. >> they have another round through tomorrow then a break. this is something we have to watch for the next several of months with this type of pattern. >> okay. >> are you keeping an eye on

ago as crews were trying to put out the flames. no students were on board and the driver is not hurt. in the bronx, emergency workers are on the scene of an emergency accident that injured two women. this is at 157th street and webster. the woman driving the s.u.v. is in serious condition. another woman on the street is in critical condition. felony charges tonight for three high school students on long island. >> they are accused of hacking into a school computer and changing grades and schedules. >> the teenagers attend commack in suffolk. eyewitness news reporter sandra bookman is there with more. sandra? >> reporter: yeah. that initial hack happened nearly three months ago. since then, police have been investigating. their probe lead them to the home and computer of one of the three high school seniors charged.

17-year-old daniel suarez said nothing as he left court shortly after being arraigned on felony charges of hacking into the commack high school computer system. >> they were considered to be the ringleader. he is the student that accessed the school district computers on each of the events they are charged with. >> suarez alleged accomplices were equally mum. they even hid their faces as they left court. both face a felony charge. school officials first noticed the breach and called police back in july when they realized the class schedules of about 300 students were changed. investigators say the probe led them to sauer rest. they accuse him of attaching a device known as a key logger to a keyboard and essentially stealing passwords to access the system. >> a piece of hardware to put on the computer to interface the keyboard and records every

a multibillion dollar deal inc.ked that prom -- inked that promises to make housing afford believe. this is the largest apartment complex in manhattan. political reporter dave evans has more on just what this deal means. mayor de blasio. >> reporter: the mayor could not have been more pleased with today's announcement. an agreement keeping thousands of apartments in peter cooper village reserved for middle class families. for years the owner bickered with tenants, rents went way up and a lot of people like linda, living here 67 years, feared they would be forced out. >> we didn't know what would go on. we were very frightened. i had great neighbors that had to move because they got these rent increases. >> reporter: how do you feel now? >> now i feel we have a chance. >> reporter: today an announcement the huge complex from 14th to 23rd street would be sold but 5,000 apartments

would remain rent regulated. it would last for 20 years and the city's investment is about $250 million. >> my friends, this is a great day for new york city. this is a great victory nor tenants everywhere. >> reporter: the blackstone group is buying the complex and many tenants are relieved that the old landlord will soon be gone. >> the uncertainty and turmoil that this complex endured since the financial crisis is definitively over. >> reporter: the agreement is supposed to be wrapped up by the end of the year. the total purchase choose is $5.3 billion. it makes the biggest affordable housing deal in city history. dave evans, channel 7 eyewitness news. movie theaters and web sites are reporting record ticket sales for the "star wars" movie. amc said it sold out 1,000 weekend shows in less than 12 hours.

another round of new guidelines on when women should get mammograms. the american cancer society revising the recommendations to make it later. >> that has been surprising to some women, especially those women battling breast cancer. toni yates has the new guidelines and the reaction. >> being diagnosed at 44 and going through this battle, i see more and more young women diagnosed with breast cancer. >> reporter: the american cancer society 2015 recommendations for mammograms pushing it later for women that have an average risk of developing breast cancer. they say those women should begin having annual mammograms at age 45 then at age 55 have mammograms once every other year and no longer recommends clinical breast exams for this lower risk group. dr. richard besser. >> i think this is a good move. the goal is to maintain the benefits of screening and cut

down on some of the harm. >> reporter: the cancer society estimates nearly 231,000 new cases of breast cancer will occur in country. two breast cancer survivors we spoke to say not only early detection but earlier detection could have made a difference in their cases and that's why the new recommendations are unsettling to them. >> my cancer hid. >> reporter: they are finding support in guidance at mary's place by the sea in ocean grove which has been in the past six years a haven for more than 5,000 women from across the country battling breast cancer. they speak firsthand. >> early detection is the best bet before it can travel and get in your lymph nodes. >> the younger you are, when they find the breast cancer, it's aggressive, later stage. >> it's best to make medical decisions with your own

on approach to laguardia airport. >> another drone incident. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer is there with the breaking news. tim? >> reporter: and, bill, late this evening we are getting new information on this incident. we understand it was confirmed through the faa that it was american airlines flight 4125. it was making the final approach into laguardia about 4:30, coming in on runway 22 that comes in from the north or from the bronx. at that point, a passenger, we are told, spotted an unmanned aircraft, a drone, that was reported to the crew on board. the flight itself, the plane, it was able to land safely on runway 22 without incident of any kind. but, again, it it was as this american airlines flight was on the final approach runway 22 that a passengers on board spotted an unmanned aircraft just off to the side of the aircraft at some distance. it's not clear how far or how close that drone was from the
