basements for electric and for gas issues. we're also concerned with water entering the subway. at this point we do have water in the subway but it's a minimal amount. >> the break sent water on to queen's boulevard and back on to broadway. emergency crews from the fire department, oem and new york city transit responded while dep work, try to stop the flow of the water. >> they tried to asian late the -- isolate the leak. what they're doing is they're going on to the larger mains to try and isolate. that's a time consuming process which they're ongoing now. >> and that was marcus solis reporting. i want to turn to cefaan kim with more on how this is impacting people in the neighborhood. i'm imagining it's been a big hassle for a lot of people. >> yeah, we are standing on queens boulevard on grand avenue on the opposite side of where this is happening. let me take a step out of the way now so you can see what we're looking at. it is coming from that construction site on the corner there. at times the water has died down now.

it was spraying into the area gushing at least 8 feet or so. if you take a look at the building across the street, that is a mixed residential commercial building. fire officials say that building was partially evacuated. that first floor is all commercial, those business owners were all taken out of there as you can imagine there's probably quite a bit of water damage inside there, and the electricity has been shut off because there are power lines in the cellar. if you look at the roof of that building, those residents are just hanging out because fire officials say they were not evacuated so they're just going to wait this out. if you look down -- it may be hard to see with this fire truck. on the ground level you can get a sense of how deep this water is by looking at those trash cans and how high that water has come up there. again, we're on queens boulevard. that's quite a wide boulevard and at times that water was almost all the way over crossed over to this side. moments ago fire officials gave us an update. let's take a listen to what they had to tell us. >> we're pushing upwards of four hours by now.

condition was such that dep had a difficult time finding the exact gate valves to shut down to isolate the problem area. >> now the streets have been shut down around this area for several blocks now, so the residents on this side, they obviously have concerns of this water coming up to their apartments and how it will impact them. fire officials say they should hang tight to have this under control. moments ago we saw dep crews on this side looking into the sewer holes trying to shut off presumably those water lines. that is the latest from here on queens boulevard. cefaan kim channel 7 eyewitness news. >> queens boulevard such a busy, such an important thoroughfare through queens. absolutely. you know it is causing some traffic issues throughout the area. we actually have shannon sohn on news copter 7 with that part of our coverage. >> shirleen, this has been a nightmare for the last couple of hours. queens boulevard is now a lake. the only vehicles you see traveling through this area are the fire department officials trying to get here.

you know exactly what is closed through this area. left, right across your screen. that is broadway, and that is the seat of where all of this happened. broadway itself, the water flows all the way back to justice street, which is where they are staging with the emergency services unit, but broadway itself is completely shut down, even beyond that point all the way back to corona avenue. let's take you back to queens boulevard itself. on the north side of this, you've got the closure in place at 51st avenue and on the south side 55th avenue is the point of this closure, and you can see the delays through the area. that's queen center mall right there. will say that people have been listening and heeding the warnings, the delays stop here which is significantly better than it was before. this affects you as you come off the l.i.e. as well. the l.i.e. delays have eased out as well. now the last thing that we want to show you because we've been talking about the subways as well, some of the water is getting into the subway system, but for the most part the drains are doing what they are

discovered. moments ago, the fairfield police chief spoke about the situation. >> both schools are secure, and we're doing two things. we're looking to reunite parents with their children, and we're taking a variety of different approaches to do that, and in addition to that, we're conducting an investigation into these anonymous threats that were occurring at our schools. >> now coming up at 12:30, we'll have a live report from fairfield and hear from parents. one person has been injured after a school bus collided with a tractor-trailer on route 35 in new jersey. the bus hit the semi at around 6:45 this morning near new monmouth road in middletown. no students were on the bus, but the bus driver was trapped. firefighters needed to extricate her. she was rushed to the jersey shore medical center. new details on calls for changes following the murder of officer randolph holder.

time to take a hard look at new york's bail system and diversion program. sealed documents in tyrone howard's past prevented judges from being aware of prior violent crimes gave the false impression he was a nonviolent criminal and a candidate for drug defer. program which allows him to be on the street and fatally shoot officer holder. >> when the risk to the public cannot be legally considered in the bail process, when it's not required to be considered in the diversion process, something is fundamentally wrong, and it inhibits judges from using their best judgment and doing their jobs to the fullest. >> the mayor goes on to say 47 states and federal courts already consider public risk in such sentencing. officer holder's wake will be held next tuesday at the greater allen a. cathedral of new york in jamaica queens. officer holder's body will then be flown to his native country of guyana where he will be buried.

the man accused of killing a new jersey mother is in the hospital after jumping in front of a new york city subway. officials say 44-year-old arthur lomando is expected to survive after having both legs amputated above the knee. the fired nypd officer is accused of using a machete to kill former girlfriend suzanne bardzell in her car outside her home in midland park yesterday. the 48-year-old was a mother of two teenage boys. police in new jersey are searching for the driver involved in a deadly hit and run. investigators say a man riding a bicycle on route 513 in rock away township was struck by a commercial truck around 6:30 this morning. the driver did not stop at the scene. the cyclist died at the hospital a short time later. the victim's name has not been released. in france the deadliest road accident in more than 30 years, a truck and a bus carrying mostly retirees collided on a rural road near a village east of bordeaux. french television reports the

bus driver and seven others were able to escape. most people became trapped, though as flames quickly consumed the vehicles. the truckdriver and his 3-year- old son who was traveling with him died. the death toll now stands at 43. turning now to hurricane patricia, the massive category 5 storm is quickly moving towards the west coast of mexico and is now the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the western hemisphere. texas is bracing for more severe weather courtesy of patricia. meteorologist bill evans is tracking it all from the weather center. >> it is a large storm, and it is the strongest storm the national hurricane center has ever had to deal with, and it is moving towards the mexican coast and continuing to move kind of a north, northeast trek, and that's going to carry it towards some of these states in mexico, around halisco, and

it is a category 5 storm. it's still at 880-millibars pressure, which is extremely low. it will continue moving toward the mountains of mexico. once it makes landfall later this evening, within 36 hours it's really going to lose a lot of its hurricane characteristics and really weaken, but its potency will remain with the moisture that's with the system that can create some 10, 20 inches of rain here in mexico, mud slides, big problems there. this will carry in to texas as we go saturday into sunday with possibly 5, maybe upwards of 10 inches of rain. we're going to be talk about our weather in a minute, which is lots of sun and clear weather heading into your weekend. back to you. thank you bill. let's get to the mets, and the team is back on the field today taking part in their first practice since clinching a berth in the world series. we have a live look at citi field where the national league champs are scheduled to work out for about an hour. the team could find out tonight who they will take on in the

we've got an update to our breaking story out of queens. we've just learned this massive water main break has finally been shut off. shannon sohn has that update for us from news copter 7. shannon. >> yeah, it's definitely getting a little bit better here. a glimmer of hope. we've got some tape from just a few minutes ago when workers finally found a source they could shut off. we have workers turning off the water across the street from where the water we have to wait for whatever water is trapped between that water main and where it is coming out of the water to finally flow through before we're finally going to see this geyser settle down entirely. we still have water all over the place. it continues to flood out on to queens boulevard, and it looks like queens boulevard is going to be shut down for the afternoon commute between 5 #st and 55th avenues.

at least they have officially shut off the water. reporting live over queens, shannon sohn channel 7 eyewitness news. we'll check back with you later. crews are trying to upright a truck hanging precariously near the edge of the bridge in maryland. police say the seafood truck collided with another vehicle this morning. the impact pushed the truck on to its side. no one was hurt but all eastbound lanes on the bridge are closed. the westbound lanes will be handling two-way traffic until that truck is removed. one person is dead and three are hurt after a shooting at a tennessee state university in nashville. police say gunfire broke out after an argument over a dice game in campus courtyard last night. three students passing by were hit by stray bullets but were not seriously hurt. the man who was killed is not a student. police do not know if the suspected shooter who fled is still investigating all of this. so far no arrests. former rhode island governor lincoln chafee has ended his run for the white

now back to our west, you know, there is this cold front that we're watching up here in winnipeg, that will slide down through the area but not until sunday morning. we were talking about patricia with winds of 200 miles an hour. the strongest hurricane ever in the northern, you know, the eastern pacific and northern hemisphere here. category 5 storm 200 miles per hour will come on shore tonight. even though it hits the mountains and a lot of wind shear it will lose a lot of its punch in the mountains and carry on over into texas into sunday and monday and eventually we could get some rain out of this wednesday and thursday. it comes connecting into a front and comes up the coast. this afternoon it's brisk. it's cooler t is 60 degrees. here comes that front for sunday. that comes by sunday morning and blows through the area really quick. so you want to look at some colors, best place to be, northern new jersey, right up the hudson river valley, connecticut right up above the merritt parkway. it's going to be really good.

student's life and a wild police pursuit just some of the stories that were caught on camera and caught our attention. residents of lee owe knee new jersey have face to connect to the crime. that crime, egging. surveillance video captured two people standing outside a house on howard terrace. then you see them hurl something, eggs. the teens ran off. during the month of october there have been seven incidents just like this. this house in particular was egged three times. they are now looking for those suspects. teachers and administrators at a middle school in utah rushing over to 14-year-old skylar nelson after he collapsed during gym class. a teacher immediately started performing cpr and other administrators called for emergency help. days of testing in the hospital revealed skylar had an undiagnosed heart condition. he is now recovering.

this is breaking news from channel 7 eyewitness news. >> and we are following two breaking stories right now, a water main break in queens flooding the roadways. there you can see the water gushing from the ground. crews were able to shut off the water about 20 minutes ago. parts of the area still under water. about seven buildings are affected and parts of queens boulevard remain closed. students are being dismissed early from schools in fairfield connecticut. officials put all 17 schools on lockdown after receiving multiple threats and now afternoon and evening activities are canceled. >> and eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer is in fairfield with the latest on this story. tim. >> reporter: and david, at this

very hour, the students here in the fairfield district are being dismissed early. it began at noon here at fairfield and will continue through the middle schools and also the elementary schools. that coming after a series of threats were phoned in, several of them to the schools forcing morning. those threats started with a call to police of a threat against a person that was followed by other threats then to several of the schools here in the fairfield district. school officials immediately locked down all 17 of the schools. they were then secured and officials say. police believe the threats are not credible, but they are continuing to investigate and are trying to allay parents' concerns. >> there are thousands of parents right now who are very scared, and they're very worried about their children. we're trying to reunite you as children. and i can tell you we certainly understand the angst and the nervousness and the fear that

the town plans to rename the street outside in her memory. police believe someone else in the house may have been targeted or the shooting may have been related to gang battles in the neighborhood. >> we have new details about a 4-alarm fire in westchester county that ripped through a downtown yonkers. firefighters finally extinguished the flames in a building in getty's square around 6:00 this morning. that's about eight hours after the fire broke out. when the smoke cleared, several businesses including a mcdonald's and a dollar store were completely gutted. one tornado local landmark was saved. st. john's church which is more than 200 years old. >> it's really a landmark, so we took a little extra care in trying to protect it. >> i'm glad that was saved. i didn't want nothing else to burn down but especially the church. >> several firefighters suffered minor injuries. the cause of the fire still under investigation. we have new information on

combat, again, isis forces in iraq. today the pentagon identified the soldier as master sergeant joshua wheeler. the 39-year-old was killed yesterday when he and dozens of u.s. special operations troops and iraqi forces raided a compound near the city of kir coe. government officials say the operation killed and captured a number of militants, freed nearly 70 iraqi prisoners. a new development in the murder of a brooklyn livery cab driver. police have released surveillance video of the suspect in the killing of rafael veras. this man stabbed the 35-year- old as he sat in his cab last month in east new york. new lots cab company says it was veras' first day on the job and other cab drivers say it's unsafe to park in that area. on long island police are trying to find the suspect in a possible machete attack. it happened after 2 a.m. in central islip. two people were hurt. one suffered a severe hand injury.

we are getting new details this afternoon about a florida musician shot and killed by an undercover police officer on a highway. the family of the 31-year-old who was waiting for help after his car broke down is now demanding answers. story. >> david and shirleen, good afternoon to you. according to the families attorney, they have just learned that corey jones was shot dead by an undercover himself. knowing this, the family

maintains jones did not deserve to die. >> i need to know why, why is my son gone today. why. >> desperate for answers, family and friends of corey jones say they know one thing for certain. >> we know that he would not ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, pull a gun on a police. never. >> authorities in palm beach county say the 31-year-old musician was shot and killed by the officer while waiting for help after his car broke down on the side of i-95 in south florida. at the time officer raja was working undercover driving an unmarked van, and according to the family's attorney, prosecutors told them the officer never showed his badge. >> why didn't he identify himself. why didn't he show the badge. >> officer raja has told them this. >> he stopped to investigator what he believed to be an abandoned vehicle. he was suddenly confronted by an armed subject. >> jones had recently purchased

this follows a launch of an investigation by the ncaa and the university into allegations that a former louisville staffer paid escorts to party and have sex with plays and new recruits. inmates in connecticut could soon be able to take free college courses in prison. the state's largest public college system is asking the federal government to use taxpayer money to help convicts get college credit. inmates would be able to enroll in job training courses and complete coursework on degree programs. while the program may give inmates a new opportunity, some current college students have mixed opinions on this idea. >> they have a problem funding people who want to go to college who have hard means, and yet we're going to fund people who got themselves in their own jams. >> everybody has the right to education. >> if approved, prisoners will get pell grants to start classes next fall.

a deputy proving no job too small when it comes to reuniting a 5-year-old boy and his beloved stuffed animal. indiana deputy matthew white received a call late saturday night from the boy's mother reporting a missing teddy bear. it was not just any teddy bear. this one had been passed down from mom to the son. the boy noticed the teddy was missing after the family stopped on the side of the road along i-65 in indiana. then the family reached out to the police, could they do deputy white during his free time death row back to the area, looked around, and voila, what a good guy. now it is on its way back home reunited with the little boy. >> that little boy, that man is forever his hero. real. >> thank you so much for that story. turning now to the internet to honor a slain teacher. coming up the social media campaign that's underway and what it's asking people to do.

unremittingly grim, suffrojet is kind of an antidate movie, a more admired than loved. tough as it is to endure, there is no arguing its power and the performance by kari mulligan as a suffrojet deserves the oscar in january. and our review starring bill murray as a rock 'n' roll tour manager on tour in afghanistan. you couldn't get any more on the opposite side of the scale on things. >> i have to tell you, i was really looking forward to seeing the bill murray film after a series of dark movies. i had no idea how long the struggle went on or how violent it got. >> and for its place in history, it is worth seeing at least that's how i feel. >> it's important. >> like 12 years a slave was important, schindler's list was important. these are things that people may be uncomfortable but sometimes you have to see these

today is great, tomorrow a few clouds and then saturday night into sunday, there goes that front. by sunday morning around 9:00, and then the afternoon features breaks of sunshine starting around noontime and for the afternoon. so for the park this afternoon, it will cool down. we'll get to about 60. tonight we're in the 50, 45- degree territory. wear a jacket and sweater. you're out and about, 60 after school kiddos, great weather, windy, cool, it will feel like the 50s. you might want to layer. you've got sports after school, friday night football. 60 today, tomorrow we're at about 58, and then we'll be seeing this front sliding morning. if you get your long run in for weekend. it. clear skies tonight, 30s in the tomorrow we have sunshine. a few clouds makes it cooler in the afternoon late. sunday there's that morning shower, and then in the afternoon it's 66 degrees.
