waters of the harlem river. detective john mortimer was one of two divers groping with a water-proof flashlight 3 a.m. sunday morning. >> pretty much on my stomach feeling the small distance in front of my face. i did actually see it first, but it was from here to my hand. >> reporter: they used a diagram like this, mapping the river bed. they conducted a grid search of 67,000 square feet. divers worked around the clock in some of the swiftest currents anywhere in new york. >> they were physically searching every inch of the bottom as we go along this line. >> reporter: investigators say ballistics tests later confirm the gun was used not only to kill officer holdout but in the shootout that preceded it. eyewitness news first reported on the search last week as divers uncovered a series of items including this spent round where the gun would be found three days later.

five days of grueling working around the clock i was working 12, 13-hour days for five days and i happened to be on the night crew so we're going without any sleep. so it was a relief. >> late this afternoon a solemn contingent of police officers from the dominican republic arrived here in east harlem to pay their respects at the shooting scene. the first of thousands of police officers from across the nation and around the world expected to attend the funeral on wednesday. and again back here at the scene, investigators have recovered what they say is the murder weapon used against officer holder. tonight in east harlem, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. the public viewing for officer holder will be held tomorrow at the greater allen ame cathedral in new york in jamaica, queens.

his funeral will also be there wednesday afternoon at 3:00. officer holder will be buried in his native guyana. the murder of officer holder once again raising the question, how do you reduce gun violence? you can't get rid of guns but you can tax them. that's what some local members of congress are now calling for. a $100 per gun tax. how will it work? can it be done? political reporter dave evans with the story at city hall. >> whenever we see an uptick in gun violence such as the shooting of officer uptick in mass shootings such as newtown, aurora, south carolina, we see a new push for gun legislation. but in washington so far, not much in the way of any action. >> reporter: today's bill was introduced on the steps of city hall where flags now fly at half staff in honor of officer randolph holder killed in the line of duty next week. >> we're in the midst of a gun

country that should shock the conscience of every decent american. >> reporter: the bill, sponsored by congresswoman velazquez would put a $100 tax on every gun sold in america. much of that would go to fund new mental health programs. velazquez wants perhaps a chip in every gun. could this pass in congress? doubtful but velazquez says something has to change. >> like abraham lincoln said, public sentiment is everything. and i know that the public is asking for leadership in washington. >> reporter: today's event included the families of gun victims, people like shenae johnson. her son kendrick was killed at a party in may 2010. she too is frustrated by washington. >> that's why we fighting, keep pushing and make them understand because we're

losing too many lives. my son was on his way to college on a scholarship. >> reporter: organizers of today's event decried the power of the nra saying washington is crippled with inaction despite so many shootings across america. >> how many of our children have to die? how many more of our police officers have to be shot and killed before we have congress pass sensible gun legislation? >> and again, most of the district attorneys in new york city support this new gun bill but in washington, not much of a chance of passing because of this new hefty tax and because of the power of the nra. reporting live at city hall, dave evans, channel 7 eyewitness news. breaking news to tell you about, not exactly what commuters want to hear. a mess on the west side highway of manhattan northbound big problems tonight with an accident. shannon sohn in newscopter7 with what's going on down there. are they pushing that car?

one of the ways they often get overturned vehicles off the roadway. believe it or not they're pushing it in to position so the tow truck can flip it back over. it makes it, believe it or not, easier for them. you're looking at the northbound side of the westbound highway past 158 th street. why they're doing this procedure they have shut down all lanes. of course on the southbound side you see that fire department activity there as well. those delays take you back across the upper deck of the george washington bridge. look at this northbound west side, delays left side of your screen, that's riverside drive a little bit better for you but really not great either. it's a rough ride on the west reporting live over the west side highway, eyewitness news. >> long night ahead for those folks. now to the mets in game 1 of the world series. it all kicks off tomorrow night but the excitement is well underway. within the last hour the mets took to the field in kansas city where they'll play the first two games of the series.

fans at home meanwhile showing their support with two big pep rallies today. first one in q gardens. second rally in nassau county on long island, started about an hour ago. tonight. eyewitness news reporter michelle charlesworth. but we begin with rob powers. >> isn't really all starts today. there's so much media. so much attention . so much to talk about now that game one of the world series is finally just one day away. the mets are on the field right now behind me but they did get a late start to this workout this afternoon. a bit late, they pushed it back but within the last hour they got it in. the most relaxed people in town might just be these fellas in blue and orange. they seem to be taking this in stride. they get how big this is, but they also get that the fun is just beginning. >> this has been fun. great group of guys. we played great baseball together. we're in the world series and this has truly been a great deal of fun.

a 10-year-old girl is dead tonight after the van she was riding in with several other children collided with another vehicle in new jersey. police say the van was traveling down arlington avenue in plainfield when a car slammed in to it. six children between 6 to 16 years old were inside. several the hospital. the accident is now under investigation. tonight an eyewitness news exclusive. police on long island using technology to get a bird's eye view of the suspects they're chasing no matter where they are. the nassau county police department the first in

50 in stanhope. 56 in clifton. northwest suburbs, few in brentwood. clear to partly 45 to tomorrow. then those clouds will thicken and will end the day on a mainly cloudy note. you see now the clouds are retreating. that's because high pressure over lake ontario. that high is going to move over new england. right now that rain is taking the path of least resistance but it will start heading toward the northeast with time. those rains associated with the remnants of patricia dropping a foot or more of rain. a foot south and east of dallas over the past 48 hours. we have to be engarde of 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. clouds on the increase. we'll stay dry during the daylight hours. first raindrops wednesday morning for your morning commute. shouldn't be heavy at that point but will get heavier during the day. a good soaking and wind picking up. even minor coastal flooding with that.

>> i think it will give us a chance to rest, recuperate, reflect a bit. so i don't think that's going to play a role. >> as for the royals, as bill said, this is their second straight trip to the world series. not flashy but the royals do all the little things well. they give the ball to edison volquez in game 1 tomorrow. for now we get to football. jason pierre made an appearance to have the injured hand looked at by the medical staff. no official update from the giants who now celebrate the big win over the cowboys yesterday. take a look at the postgame stats. you would have thought the cowboys won this game. you'd be wrong. the giants turned their fourth running back to get the offense going. orleans saw his first action of the season. this game boiled down to turnovers. matt cassel threw three interceptions. dominique rogers-cromartie had

two of them including a 3rd quarter 58-yard pick and score. they gave the giants a 17-13 lead. then things got special, as in special teams. after the cowboys tied the game at 20, dwayne harris taking the pick-off. he's off to the races. 100 yards for the score and it proved to be the difference. the giants win it 27-20. they move in to first place in their division. >> it wasn't pretty but we got the win so we're happy about the win. huge divisional win for us but we're going to go back and we know we can be better. >> the jets are left to wonder what if. they played well, just not well enough and lost in new england. already up 17-16 3rd quarter, jets look to be going in for another score but brandon marshall unable to hold on to this very catchable one, but tom brady and company prove unstoppable. twice he burns the jets secondary, first to danny amendola, then to rob gronkowski. the patriots remain unbeaten.
