bias. and the officer who slammed a 16-year-old girl to the floor and dragged her across the room. could find out today if he'll lose his job. with more here's abc's karen travers. >> reporter: one spring valley high school student who witnessed the police takedown tells abc news it all started when his teacher asked the female student to turn over her phone and she refused. >> she said i'm not doing anything, you know, please, you don't have to take my phone. >> reporter: the teacher then asked a school administrator to help. he also asked the student to leave. and again, she refused. that's when ben fields, the school resource officer, got called in, and things escalated. >> you were going to come with me or i'm going to make you. >> reporter: cell phone video shows fields grabbing the student by the neck and throwing her across the floor. >> hands behind your back. >> reporter: several frightened classmates grabbed their phones and recorded the encounter. >> what we all watched on that shamefully shocking video is reprehensible, unforgivable, and

inconsistent with everything that this district stands for. >> reporter: officer fields is now on unpaid administrative leave and banned from school properties pending the outcome of the investigation. >> this is someone that is physically in pain because of what she endured and the world watched what she endured as she literally flew across the classroom. >> reporter: but the sheriff says deputy fields received a culture of excellence award for proving to be an exceptional role model in 2014. he also says one of the videos captures the student hitting the officer. >> it just shows that when the officer puts his hands on her initially she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist. it makes you sick to your stomach when you see that initial video. but again, that's a snapshot. >> reporter: the sheriff expects his internal investigation to be finished within the next day. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> quite a graphic snapshot it is. some new clues in the meantime in the police shooting death of a south florida man. that man, corey jones, was

waiting by his broken-down car about ten days ago when he was shot and killed by an off-duty officer who stopped to investigate. phone records show jones made a call to at&t's roadside assistance line at 3:10 a.m. now, that call lasted 53 minutes, but police say the shooting happened at 3:15 a.m. if the call was recorded, it may have captured the confrontation. jones's body was found about 100 feet from his vehicle. and here in new york funeral services today for the new york city police officer killed in the line of duty. dozens of officers saluted yesterday as randolph holder's coffin was brought into the church. holder was shot to death while chasing an armed robber last week. he'll be buried in his native guyana. just hours before tonight's republican debate more signs of donald trump in trouble. a national poll from the "new york times" and cbs finds ben carson now in the lead with more than a quarter of republicans preferring the retired neurosurgeon. trump is a few points behind,

the fight against isis so far. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. a deadly crash last night on an eastern pennsylvania highway involving a bus filled with college students. eyewitnesses say the bus carrying the lehigh university crew team was rear-ended by a car. it lost control, flipped over several times before landing on its roof. none of the students had serious injuries, but the driver of the car was killed. former house speaker dennis hastert is expected to plaid guilty today as part of a deal to avoid a trial. investigators say hastert sexually abused several teenage boys and then a few years ago started to pay one of them more money. there's a good chance hastert will have to serve time as part of the deal, though sentencing courtroom today. former rap mogul suge knight and comedian kat williams have pleaded not guilty to robbery charges. they appeared before a los stealing a celebrity photographer's camera last year.

separate murder case that was filed after he ran over two men outside a compton burger stand in january. one man was killed and the other seriously injured. a mega merger could turn walgreen's tin an even bigger giant in the drugstore business. walgreen's is already the nation's largest narms chain. now it wants to buy rite aid, the third biggest one. if the deal goes through, walgreen's will have 18,000 stores. the deal is worth nearly $9.5 billion. given the size of the deal, it's expected to draw scrutiny from the government's antitrust regulators. for now rite aid stores will keep that name. >> that's a big nernlger. here's a great story that fits under the simple headline oops. >> oops indeed. it's at an art museum in italy. that party aftermath. all those champagne bottles were not what was left over from a wild event. that was the work of art itself. it was called "where are we going to dance tonight?"

his client was brutalized, her arm in a cast, she has a rug burn apparently and is suffering neck and back pain. deputy fields has been the subject of two earlier lawsuits involving allegations of excessive force and racial bias. also in south carolina no state criminal charges will be filed against a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed 19-year-old teen. the teen gunned down in his car while on a date. the officer says he feared for his life. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: the young couple was sitting in the car after buying ice cream on a first date. it all goes down in seconds following a sting in which undercover police allegedly sell drugs to a woman riding in this car with 19-year-old zachary hammond. seneca, south carolina police officer mark tiller with his handgun drawn tries to make an arrest. briefly stepping in front of hammond's car. but hammond attempts to speed off. officer tiller fires. hammond struck twice in the side and back dies.

justified, that officer tiller had reason to fear for his life and that he had a difficult decision to make in just three seconds. a justice department investigation continues, so federal charges could still be brought. hammond's parents say he was shot after his car passed the officer. they are suing, claiming the officer's life was not truly in danger. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. human rights groups are reporting more atrocities at the hands of isis. the militant group is said to have tied three prisoners to ancient columns in the city of palmyra and then blowing them up. those columns dating back at least 2,000 years. and new talks aimed at ending the four-year-old civil war in syria could have a new participant. for the first time iran has been invited to join the discussion. no word yet on whether the iranians will take part. a new round of negotiations starts tomorrow in vienna. secretary of state john kerry, his russian counterpart, and the european and arab diplomats will be there as well. south carolina's low country
