a boeing 777 spotting the drone as he came in for a landing. eyewitness news reporter josh einiger at the airport with the developing story. >> even if you have a permit to fly, the federal government prohibits you from flying it over 400 feet off the ground. in this case the altitude was 2,000 feet and smack in the middle of one of the busiest flight paths. >> reporter: the boeing jet came way too close to someone's flying toy. if you listen to the fast talking jargon of air traffic control, you'll hear the crew of british airways 177 from london operating with the handle speed bird telling them about a strange sighting over floral park, long island. >> about 300 feet above us i'm pretty sure it was a drone. >> okay, thank you. >> a very strange looking balloon. >> reporter: the faa says this

was no balloon, hovering between 1800 and 2200 feet above the ground. the unmanned drone was flying above approaching jet liners. >> 177, do you have any other description other than what it could possibly be, like a color, direction of flight or anything else? >> it was going roughly toward the west and it was about i would say -- difficult to tell the size of the thing but about 300 feet above us and was black and looked like one of those on each corner. >> reporter: in the past year the faa says pilots have reported more than three dozen drone sightings in the air space just near jfk. last weekend american eagle crew reported seeing an unmanned aircraft while on approach to laguardia. controllers dispatched an nypd helicopter to investigate as they urged other pilots to keep an eye out. >> no other pilots reported

ba177 landed without dein. -- without incident. the nassau county police taken over the investigation. if they find the person responsible for the drone he or she could face a fine of thousands of dollars. a fuel leak the suspected cause tonight. the dynamic airways plight was preparing to take off from fort lauderdale when an engine caught fire. the pilot in another lane alerted them of the fire. passengers were forced to jump down emergency chutes to escape the flames. >> i heard a loud bang, turned around, saw the lights, saw flames, ran to the front of the aircraft. he opened the door, let the chute out, the chute opened to the sides where the flames were. >> one person suffered serious burns. investigators are now

we have new video tonight of a geyser erupting in manhattan after a water main construction site. this is at 84th street and second avenue. several buildings along a two-block stretch were without hours for several hours. >> was very concerned about the business because we have to stop to 7 p.m. so i had to call my reservations to cancel and tell them to show up until 7 p.m. >> the cause, the mta says a fitting on a replacement water main had failed. on this night three years ago superstorm sandy slammed in to the tri-state. tonight a candlelight vigil to celebrate the resilience of a hard hit community in brooklyn. about 50 people whose homes were destroyed or damaged by the storm gathered in canarsie. everyone was affected by the

>> when hurricane sandy occurred all of us was affected, whether it was losing our home or even in some areas, someone was affected, or a next door neighbor was affected. >> at 8:00 this evening a moment of silence was held in honor of the 61 people who lost their lives in new york from the storm. trouble tonight for new york mayor de blasio. it's happening at an event he thought would be a joyous kick-off for his re-election campaign. lots of demonstrators outside the event. a new poll out that says a lot of new yorkers don't want him re-elected. jim dolan at the event. >> the election is such a long way off, two years off, but the mayor did get things started and a lot of folks were excited to be there. some spend nearly $5,000 to have dinner with the mayor tonight but there were others outside the hall who were less excited about the prospect of a second turn.

>> reporter: some of those greeting the mayor's re-election kick-off were uninvited. this cell phone video was sent out by protesters, a handful of people with various grievances who tried to make their way inside the fundraiser. >> we're here to make sure the community knows they're upset and angry. we want to emasc him for all of new york city to say. >> reporter: the mayor didn't say much after the fundraiser. a poll out today said he may have an uphill climb. the quinnipiac university poll show 45% of the voters approve of the job and 46% disapprove. the poll shows 32% thinks he deserves re-election but 48% do not. the rest are undecided and there's a lot of time before the election. none of the

a cop making a stunning and x-rated claim. the attorney for linden police officer pedro abad telling a judge today a stripper may have slipped a drug in his drink to money. after leaving a club last month, police say abad drove the wrong way on the freeway and hit a tractor-trailer. two people were killed. prosecutors say they've busted a lucrative oxycodone ring run by the owners of two small neighborhood pharmacies. pharmacist lillian and her husband distributed more than half a million pills of the highly addictive pain killer often using fake prescriptions. they own chapen chemist in green point and ridgewood. millions made were used to buy a house in greenwich and to lease a porsche and a land rover. we're learning more about the runaway military blimp. the military slowly dismantling that

blimp tonight, wanted to remove the wreckage as soon as possible after the blimp crashed in two pieces yesterday, cops fired shots at its nose to drain the heel the -- and the mets tonight, they're looking for a comeback. they're back on home turf resting up for tomorrow's big game. they trail the kansas city royals two wins to zero. the mets have to win four of the next five games. it can be done. sports anchor rob powers is here. >> it can be done. the two games in kansas city did not turn out the way the mets or their fans wanted but everybody's got to live with it because game 3 comes tomorrow ready or not. down 0-2 after tough losses. back at home to get back in the series. a scheduled workout day at citifield but most of the work that got in was inside. there wasn't even a lot of that. rest and getting ready to turn this thing around starting tomorrow. the series gets a different look in game 3. the mets say hey,

anywhere from 8 to 17 degrees behind yesterday's pace. the gusty winds earlier, only a few scattered wind gusts over 20. 46-mile-per-hour gusts we saw earlier. sunshine tomorrow, a noticeable breeze. because the humidity is so low, it will feel cool. have your sunglasses. lots of sun shine and the overcoat as temperatures will struggle to 60. game 3 at citifield, beautiful. northwest winds 6 to 12. dropping in to the 40s by the end of the game. clearing skies right now. a couple cold fronts go through. one more passes through tomorrow. snow showers on there. it's carrying pretty chilly air over the eastern great lakes and you can see how we're in the 60s now but 50s and 40s are knocking on the door here. tomorrow morning definitely a chill in the air. 48 in the city. 46, islip. and 45 in belmar. a lot of sunshine tomorrow. it takes us to near 60 degrees in the afternoon. on saturday you'll have high clouds filtering the sun in the afternoon.

new video tonight of the chaos during a deadly biker gang shootout. a fight in then a shootout erupts just off camera between a group of motorcycle clubs. panic suddenly erupts. the video shows some motorcyclists duck for cover while others pull out guns. nine people were killed. tonight investigators are trying to figure out who leaked the video. in tonight's health alert, the age old tradition of singing nursery rhymes to calm a crying baby. researchers at the university of montreal found babies stay calm twice as long when they listen to a song as they do listening to speaking. previous studies found singing can calm and relieve pain by

run around for 10 minutes doesn't make a lot of sense. we've played a lot of baseball in the last three or four days. >> more with the mets all day tomorrow. but for now, basketball, and the home opener for the knicks after they won a road game last night. they beat the bucks by 25. hawks are a different story. made it to the conference finals last season. carmelo anthony right to the rack for the basket and the foul. langston galloway came off the bench with a couple 3-pointers. first round draft pick porzingis. anthony scored 25. the knicks didn't have the horses to get to the end. jeff teague led the hawks with 23. horford scored 21. knicks lose the home opener. >> i don't know if it was necessarily a problem with us. atlanta is a good team. good teams are able to play better longer. we saw the difference between the level that they are right now and where we are right now. and we'll have to learn from it. >> it's a process.

football this weekend, giants at new orleans. jason pierre paul won't play in that game but he might travel to that game. lost a finger in a fireworks accident. suffered other injuries as well. he's back in the fold now. showed up in shape. signed a contract. he did run plays with the scout team in practice. now pierre-paul tries to get in football shape. the jets in oakland sunday. nick mangold said he intends to play even though he missed practice today with a sore neck. he was injured last sunday. said it was a scary time. only missed three games in 10 years because of injury. and right now he says he feels, quote, peachy. good hockey game in brooklyn tonight. islanders won six of their last seven against the hurricanes. you won't see many goals prettier than this. fourth of the year. one more look here. but the game goes to overtime and carolina finishes. the isles lose at home 3-2 in o.t.
