this was an horrific freak act, and it's horrible that all these lives were lost this way on a beautiful happy halloween. >> two families ripped apart by a deadly crash. a woman loses her daughter and father in an instant while another family mourns a young man who used his final moments to save his young sister. good evening. i'm joe torres. >> i'm sandra bookman. tonight the community in the bronx came together to remember those three victims. >> an emotional candlelight vigil was held at the scene. 10-year-old nyanna, her grandfather louis perez were

jumped the curb and struck them. >> lucy yang was at that vigil. tonight she is n morris park. >> reporter: sandra and joe, they sang "amazing grace." they recited the lord's prayer at a candlelight vigil, this as the halloween tragedy tears through two families and multiple generations. >> nyanna was the best daughter in the world. >> reporter: in one horrific moment, this woman lost her oldest child, only 10, and she lost her 65-year-old father, a vietnam veteran who was awarded the purple heart but really was a hero every day. >> he helped me raise my children well. he cleaned, cooked, took them to school every day. >> tonight the morris park community gathered around the families of the victims at the crash site to pray and mourn

>> glory to the father. >> reporter: also killed was a 24-year-old. his family did not address the crowd. their sobbing spoke volumes. they were all out trick or treating on halloween. leka took his youngest sibling. a car suddenly jumped the curb and slammed into the crowd of innocent victims. nyanna's two younger sisters survived without a scratch. the girl's father, who just flew in from georgia, paid tribute to his father-in-law. >> you are my hero for attempting to save all of my children. >> reporter: perhaps one of the most tearful and beautiful moments tonight came when one neighbor told the families that everyone out here came running to help and that their loved ones did not die alone. right now still no word on

would caused the 52-year-old driver to lose control. he is expected to recover. live in the bronx, lucy yang, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> lucy, thank you very much. now an eyewitness news exclusive. a family in brooklyn desperate for answers after their son was hit by two cars while riding his bicycle. shawn benz is in critical condition. new surveillance video captured the cars involved but those drivers have not come forward. tonight his family is hoping that someone can help track them down. eyewitness news has this exclusive story. >> reporter: sandra, this is where shawn benz was struck by two vehicles. as you can see it is a busy intersection with a big gas stationary by so even late at night it is fairly well lit here. and that is why shawn benz's parents say they just can't understand how anyone who run over their son and then take off.

>> he didn't believe we were here. he can't retain anything. we've been here for day, and every time we come in, he's like, where have you been, i'm mad at you. >> reporter: they say it feels like a night mare they can't wake up from. their 27-year-old son shawn clinging to life and incoherent after being hit while riding his bicycle. the victim of not one but two hit-and-runs. >> it's very frustrating to set in the room watching him suffer, basically. and he can't communicate because he's sedate, and he doesn't -- i don't even know that when he wakes up he those where he is. >> reporter: take a look at these images taken from surveillance video. we chose not to show the moments of impact due to the graphic nature. the video shows ben struck behind that gas station pump and then hit again, talking the man about a dozen feet. >> he did reveal to us that he's really scared and paranoid.

seen -- i've never gone through anything like in this my life. >> reporter: it happened on okay 21st around 2:00 a.m. as benz was on his way home. at 6' 4", 235 pounds, he's player. now at kings county hospital he is unable to breathe on his own with 15 broken ribs, pneumonia, a fractured arm, and swollen from head to toe. according to a witness, the first vehicle that struck benz is a white suv, possibly a lincoln. the second was like al white nissan maxima. bill benz says he believes it's only a matter of time until the two drivers are caught. >> my family and i will not rest until you are brought to justice. >> reporter: the benz family says what's more important than justice is to get their son back but at this point there's no way to know if their son will pull through.

channel 7 eyewitness news. mets fans on the edge of their seats tonight. it is game series. right now at citi field the royals are ahead in the series three games to one. can the mets pull off a win and revive their world series hopes? we have a team of reporters following the game. we begin with sports anchor laura behnke in the newsroom. >> matt harvey has had his shares of what's called an adverse situation. from how he chose to rehab last year to the battle his agent waged this year to missing the team's first postseason workout. but all of that would be forgiven tonight with a win to keep the mets' hopes alive. rob powers is out at citi field. the season on the line, then everything changed. he joins us now with more. rob. >> reporter: how quickly this game turned. how quickly this season turned. it's not turning the way for the mets.

early on it was a much different story when the mets jumped out to that 1-0 lead with the home run by curtis granderson. with windshield and side damage parked on a street with no one inside. fred thompson, a former republican senator from tennessee who also acted in films and tv, has died. thompson died in nashville after a recurrence of lymphoma, according to his family. thompson appeared in at least 20 films. among them, in the light of fire, the hunt for red october, and cape fear. he announced a bid for president in 2007 but dropped out in january of 2008. he was 73 years old. happening tomorrow, president obama will be in our area, new jersey in the afternoon, new york in the evening. in newark the president will join mayor ras baraka to visit a facility for former prisoners. at night, the president comes to manhattan's theater district to attend a special fund-raiser performance of the musical hamilton.

some 50,000 runners hit the pavement today for the new york city marathon. some of them didn't make it across the finish line until darkness had fallen, and most others had already gone home. among the big winners today, on the women's side, the first woman to repeat in new york since 2008. her fellow kenyan won his first major marathon title. there were also top honors in the wheelchair division. but this race is not just about the elite runners. >> congratulations! >> who doesn't like a pat on the back for a job well done, or a nice gold medal to guild the accomplishment. all that and more waiting at the finish line for the tens of thousands of hardy souls what completed this year's tcs new york city marathon. >> hardest thick i've ever done. it was an enjoyment run.

got through the weekend, the marathon, trick or treat, and now we have a fabulous week ahead. >> at the end of the week you are going to be saying, september wants its temperatures back. friday. with the exception of tomorrow, through friday. we head outside and check out the empire state building. 60 degrees, wind coming in from the southwest at 6 miles per hour. the high on the day got up to

to 60, so it's a very mild night. the temperature is a full six degrees above normal for november 1st. we set those clocks back last night, or hopefully we did. the sun is setting these days at 4:53 p.m. highs today got well into the 60s in many spots. up to 64 even as far north as poo kip see. 64 down the shore at belmar. at citi field right now, a lot of tense fans, 61 degrees. 60 at central park. 40s up toward monticello and sussex. wade couple of sprinkles this morning before the start of the marathon. it moved offshore fairly quickly. however, there is a very wet storm system that's going to provide a lot of rainfall for virginia, north carolina, even the southern delmarva. rainfall doesn't make it in here but some high clouds do make it in here during the day tomorrow, and that will tend to

dim the sunshine at times, especially since that sun angle is getting lower and the sun is in the southern part of the sky. that's where the clouds are actually going to be. so at times it will just appear mostly cloudy, or very high everycast out there at times tomorrow. sunnier to the north of new york city. no rainfall again expected from this system. partial sunshine for tomorrow. the high getting up to around 64. high pressure in control enough to stop that rainfall from moving up into the tristate region. then as that high moves offshore, we get a return flow from the south, and that heats our temperature to 70 degrees during the day on tuesday. for many areas that's 10 to 15 degrees above average. a big trough of low pressure in the west. they are going to be getting slow in the pacific northwest. coolest since last spring. that actually causes a big ridge to form in the east. that means it is going to feel like late september for tuesday and right through the end of the week.

officials are considering either mechanical failures or terrorism as possible causes of the deadly crash of a russian plane in egypt. while a branch of isis is claiming responsibility, russian airlines have poor safety records. investigators say the wide scattering of debris shows the plane broke up in the air. all 224 people on board died when the plane broke up over the sinai peninsula yesterday. new at 11:00, a man on long island is under arrest and facing charges of killing his mother's live-in boyfriend. police say the man stabbed 47- year-old oscar green in the neck inside the apartment they shared in holbrook, suffolk county last night. he ran off, reportedly, after the stack, but was arrested this morning. an investigation tonight into a shooting in queens that left one teen dead and another

police say 19-year-old peyton mann waring was shot and killed on 144th avenue in rosedale. his 18-year-old neighbor was also shot and is in critical condition. no arrests have been made. no word on what sparked the shooting. happening tomorrow, a court appearance for the girlfriend of kyle naven, the connecticut man accused of killing his parents. she is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution. the police affidavit leading to her arrest quotes text messages between her and kyle naven. the bodies were found buried in the backyard of a vacant home on thursday. two people from queens face multiple charges after an assault at a deli in the nassau county community of innwood. police say a 23-year-old and a 26-year-old took two children trick or treating last night. investigators say the couple stole cookies and attacked the

clerk following an argument over the treats. the clerk gave the children. still no word on the cause of a ferocious fire that ripped through a warehouse in new jersey overnight. the blaze erupted in a one- story building on bloomfield avenue in fairfield around midnight. as flames shot through the roof, several explosions could be heard inside the building. no one was injured. investigating. about 200 people rallied at liberty state park to demonstrate their opposition to development at the public water side park. the protest inside park's historic train terminal concourse was organized by the friends of liberty state park. governor christie has proposed private commercial development at the site. demonstrators are opposed because they like the park the way it is. today's protest included live bands, kite flying, and face painting.

we wanted to restore our lighting system in the city. you can have the greatest dreams in the world, but unless you can finance those dreams, it doesn't happen. at the time that the bankruptcy filing was done, the public lighting authority had a hard time of finding a bank. citi did not run away from the table like some other bankers did. citi had the strength to help us go to the credit markets and raise the money. it's a brighter day in detroit. people can see better when they're out doing their tasks, young people are moving back in town, the kids are feeling safer while they walk to school. and folks are making investments and the community is moving forward.

their normally quiet neighborhood. >> shots fired. possible shooting in progress. >> reporter: early saturday deadly halt. a man shot to death riding his bike. flowers placed where his body was found. naomi says she was just feet from the shooter and saw it happened. >> he looked right at me, and i was like, okay, i started walking away, and i said, please don't shoot me. >> reporter: matt woke up when he heard gunshots, called police, and followed the gunman. >> there was a lady on the bench that appeared to be smoking a cigarette. she was shot in the chest. i looked to the right. there was another lady shot in the jaw. >> reporter: police finally caught up with the suspected shooter here in this wendy's parking lot. in a barrage of bullets, police say the suspect was killed. >> i got on my stomach, and they started shooting at each other. >> reporter: police are still investigating ago motive and haven't released the names of

the people involved, but they have boarded up the home of the suspected shooter. the lapped lord said he started a fair there before he wept on his murderous rampage. abc news, colorado springs. new details tonight on the search for the u.s. cargo ship that disappeared during hurricane joaquin. an ntsb official said the ship detected by sonar yesterday is upright on the ocean floor. that will help searchers retain the ship's data recorder. investigators are waiting for video confirmation that the wreckage is the el faro which went down october 1st with 33 crew members. it has been a frightful weekend of wild weather in texas. at least six tornadoes have battered the lone star statement more than a foot of rain has fallen, swamping cars and pouring into homes. the violent storms have killed at least six people. there have been more than 130 high water rescues in the houston area alone. schools in the hardest hit areas are closed tomorrow.

a wet and unpleasant surprise for riders as water flooded at least one light rail line in portland, oregon yesterday. heavy rain led to flash flooding causing delays across the transit 15. spokesman did not explain why this train went through high water. officials noted electricity for the trains comes from above so the water did not pose an immediate threat to passengers. health officials in washington state and oregon expect more cases in the e. coli outbreak linked to chipotle restaurants. more than 20 people have been sickened with eight hospitalizations, but no reported dessments more than 40 chipotle restaurants are closed, although the contamination has been linked to only six. chipotle says closed more locations out of an abundance of caution. thousands of runners achieved their dream during the new york city marathon. and for one couple, today was dream come true of a different kind.
