seizures going back a number of years. >> reporter: police investigators want to know more, if a medical problem could have caused the driver, who has not been identified yet, to jump the curb, striking and killing a group out trick or treating. 65-year-old grandfather lewis perez and his granddaughter, 10-year-old nyanna aquil, were killed. she's shown on this picture in the right taken before the crash with her mother. her 3-year-old sister was injured. a third sister was with them but not injured. 24-year-old kristian leka was killed. his 9-year-old sister and his friend suffered less serious injuries. the driver, a 52-year-old man, was also pulled from the mangled wreckage and is said to be in stable condition at jacobi hospital. >> i've thought he's come home today. >> reporter: the driver's mother, who we are not identifying, spoke to eyewitness news a day after she had visited her son. she claims she is unaware of any medical problem her son may have had.

>> i don't know what happened in the accident. no one said much to me about it. i wish i could tell you more. >> reporter: others too who come and light candles and place flowers here at this growing memorial also want to know more. for many it is hard to understand this tragedy. >> i'm still shocked. it's unbelievable. >> i just hope the family can get beyond this. it must be horrible what they're going through right now. >> that outpouring of grief very evident on social pages as well. justin writes on twitter, it's just terrible for this mother to have to go through all of this. reporting live in the morris park section of the bronx, tim fleischer, channel 7 eyewitness news. from the bronx to brooklyn, police hoping to catch two suspect whose shot and killed an innocent customer inside a bodega. the crime caught on camera. two men in hoodies walking through the store pulling out a gun and demanding money. damian francis, a father, tried to step in and

gunman turned and shot him in the chest. his family tonight obviously heart broken. >> i started to cry and i just cried for like two days straight. he had a nice heart. he loved to help people. >> the two robbers taking money from the register then taking off. police say they hope someone will recognize the suspects and help track them down. an arrest tonight, the mysterious death of a woman in an apartment on the upper west side. nearly six years ago the dead in a bathtub. at first thought an accident but now her husband has been charged with eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson is in scarsdale where her husband was arrested. >> covlin was living in a quiet neighborhood. would often visit his two kids who now live with his parents. but after six long years his world was just turned upside down and he never saw it coming.

>> mr. covlin is stunned. he's stunned by what has happened. >> reporter: after six years of truly believing he was free and clear living in this home in new rochelle, convinced he was not a suspect in the death of his wife shelly, today rod covlin seemed dazed as he sat in a courtroom now charged with second degree murder. the sister listened as the man who was once part of their family entered a not guilty plea. >> in the back of his mind he to come. right from the beginning he said he did not commit the crowd >> reporter: the 42-year-old's house of cards came crashing down yesterday morning. covlin stepped off a train and was cuffed. back in 2009 at the time of shelly's death, the pair lived in separate apartments in this building on west 68th street. they were going through a bitter divorce but on new year's eve the couple's then 9-year-old daughter found her mom dead in a bathtub. for

religious reasons shelly was buried the next day, her death ruled an accident, but months later her family had her body exumd. -- exhumed. it was ruled homicide by strangulation. covlin was on his way to visit his kids, 15 and 9 years old, who live with his parents in a home in this quiet cul-de-sac. >> the two people who are suffering tremendously by this are the two very young children and mr. covlin is devastated by that. he's done everything in his power to watch over them and take care of them. >> both families have been fighting in court over shele 's estate. covlin is due back in court november 9th. kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness

a woman from connecticut is denying helping her boyfriend kill his parents. 31-year-old jennifer valant made her first appearance in court today in bridgeport. she's charged with conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution in the death of jeffrey and jeanette navin. kyle navin is charged with their murders. the bodies were found buried in a vacant home. a fire started in park slope. officials say the flames were contained to one apartment. one resident did suffer minor injuries. president obama in the tri-state tonight, right now in new jersey where mr. obama is calling for an overhaul of the criminal justice system and the prison system that pushes punishment instead of rehabilitation. a recidivism rate of right now. political reporter dave evans is here with more.

>> the president is indeed pushing for an overhaul of the criminal justice system. there are more than 2 million men and women behind bars, far more than any other country in the world. when they get out, many find out it's hard to re-enter society. finding a job and staying sober, not easy. the president wants to change all that. >> reporter: the president today visited a rehab center in newark and held a discussion on how to make our criminal justice system more fair. we have only 5% of the 25% of its inmates. most are black and latino and the president says this has got to change. many republicans agree. >> it's good for everybody. it means less crime. it means less recidivism. it means less money spent on incarceration. it means less wasted taxpayer money. >> reporter: obama wants to extend technical training for inmates. and he wants to cut sentences for nonviolent

drug-related crimes. today some of the president's biggest applause came over his decision to, what's called, ban the box. >> like a lot of big employers on many job applications there's a box that asks if you have a criminal record. if you answer yes, then a lot of times you're not getting a call back. we're going to do our part in changing this. >> reporter: today in camden governor christie blasted the president, accusing him of trying to take credit for his own criminal justice reform statewide. christie put out this instagram message saying dear mr. president, we've been getting this done in new jersey since 2010. >> i'm confident when the spotlight is shown on camden that camden is going to shine and so will its residents and that's a really good change. >> tonight the president is attending a democratic party fundraiser then another fundraiser at a special

performance of the hit musical "hamilton. " former new york assembly speaker sheldon silver is back in court as jury selection got underway in his corruption trial. he's accused of accepting millions of dollars of pay-offs and kickbacks. his lawyers claim he's being targeted over practices that have long been sanctioned in albany. he faces up to 130 years in prison. they made it to the world series. few thought they would do that. the mets thanking their disappointed fans around the tri-state on twitter today. fans say they're the best in baseball and the mets say back at them. the tweet coming after a punishing extra inning loss last night to the now world series champions, the kansas city royals. lots of second guessing of manager terry collins after he seemed to use his heart to make some decisions like keeping in yoenis cespedes after he was hurt and not pulling matt harvey before he fell apart. it was a terrible what happened.

now to the latest on the investigation of the plane crash in egypt over the weekend. the director of the national intelligence said he would not rule out the possibility of terrorism. a branch of isis has claimed responsibility. aviation experts say a large debris field indicates the plane broke up in the air. so far that's been the only clue. all

two of the partners at save a life fire safety campaign tonight spreading the effort even further. >> working with new york city officials and the red cross to install an additional 100,000 smoke detectors for people who otherwise cannot afford them. >> this is huge because smoke detectors we know save lives. here's eyewitness news reporter michelle charlesworth. >> reporter: the line to get a free smoke and carbon monoxide alarm stretched down the block with the mayor himself handing them out. alarms that would have saved the lives of the seven children killed in midwood back in march. >> sometimes it takes an enormous tragedy, i can't even seven children. i don't even begin to understand what that means. >> reporter: a life saving around $30. now the city is handing out 100,000 of these free.

news was as good as lee's was. at least we have the warmth. the mets and their fans have had one night to sleep on it. the world series loss is just as painful today. the mets had plenty of chances in this fall classic. instead they were forced to watch the royals celebrate in their house last night. plus the giants went down to new orleans yesterday but left their defense at home. for the girl scout meeting... for the soccer team... for the girl scout meeting... how many meetings are you having?! at stop&shop, prices are down. savings are up.

then blew it. game 5 will be remembered for a 9th inning decision that will be second guessed all winter. dominant matt harvey, talked terry collins in to pitching the 9th familia. a run scoring double to eric hoss. that point. the damage was done. still familia could have worked out of it if not for a daring play by hosmer to try to score on an infield out only to have lucas duda throw wildly and the possible final out of the inning turned in to the tying run. the mets' defense let them downtime and time again. >> i love my players and i trust them. so i said go get them out. >> as a competitor, any chance you get to go back out there and try to get us back to winning baseball, it's everything any guy would >> once the royals tied the game it seemed like it was just a matter of time.

with the mets offense going nowhere, kc scored five times. the championship run about to end. wilmer flores taking the called strike 3 in the bottom of the 12th. that was that. the mets' dream of a championship was over as the royals celebrated their first world series title in 30 years. the mets left to watch and wonder what if. >> there's frustration butalize also i think an opportunity to step back and realize that as a group we accomplished some really great and cool things. >> hurts for sure but when i look back on this field it will be the best time i ever had on a baseball field. opening day, 2016 set for april 4th for the mets. they begin the season against the royals in kansas city. think it will be a big deal. speak of the royals, the new world series champs arrived back in kansas

there's manager ned yost hoisting the trophy. don mattingly officially introduced as the manager of the florida marlins today. it was a rough day all together for new york sports team yesterday. week 8 not kind to the giants or jets. big blue went to new orleans and scored an amazing 49 points. the only problem, the defense allowed 52. it was a wild gun slinging affair at the super dome. 13 touchdowns. that's the most ever in an nfl game. the saints basically had their way with the defense, racking up 614 total yards of offense. >> definitely frustrating and something we've got to look at and fix. we can't win games if teams are scoring 52 points. >> the jets did not fair much better on the west coast. they dropped their second straight game, this one to the raiders. that was not the only thing they lost. ryan fitzpatrick went down with ligament damage in his left thumb.

to make a season debut. he is listed as day-to-day. he'll eventually need surgery. the qb will take snaps in practice to see if he can play through it now. >> we've got to be able to quickly put it behind us because in the nfl no matter how healthy or hurt you are nobody feels bad for you. >> nobody feels bad for you. that's what the motto is.
