the way. >> this morning, the last morning, this is the first morning, she kissed me goodbye and said i will see you when i get back. >> reporter: but carol bell never made it back home. she was hit by a bus bus and killed as she crossed fulton street at 6:15 this morning. this woman was her roommate at this woman's shelter one block away -- women's shelter one block away. >> talked about her children, she loved all of her children, and they had their ups and downs but they were basically there. >> reporter: and she wanted too get -- to get out of the shelter? >> right. >> reporter: this is a screen grab. the actual video is too disturbing to show. that's carol there with her walker crossing fulton street heading to the doctor. police say paul roper was driving the bus, made a left turn onto fulton. carol crossed over the double yellow line and then the bus hit her on the driver's side. roper stopped for about four seconds and kept going as carol

died in the street. >> she was a jenner -- generous person, kind-hearted woman. the death is just shocking. >> reporter: detectives spent much of the day here. at the time of the accident, police assay roper was wrapping up his shift heading wack to the garage and then -- back to the garage. three hours later, detectives tracked the bus down in the midwood section of brooklyn. carol's friend cannot believe she's gone. >> she was there any time i needed her. when she knew i had nothing, she would come over and whisper to me and say here, this is for you. this is for you. >> reporter: and faith tells me carol had at least one daughter who would come to the shell ter and visit her mom. the bus driver, paul roper, left out of the precinct in cuffs. we're told he's been on the job for 15 years.

for now we're live in brownsville, kemberly richardson. >> thank you. now not subway stabbing -- now to the substay accident. two people were stabbed on a avenue. >> shirleen allicot is live with the details. >> reporter: bill, what a frightening ride for two innocent people minding their own business, riding the c- train slashed at random by a total stranger. thankfully, tonight, those two victims will be just fine. as we take a look at the ralph avenue stop, service has just resumed. this afternoon, two victims were heading toward manhattan on the c-train, when it made a stop at ralph avenue. that's when a man in his 30s randomly slashed them on the left side of their faces. both were taken to the hospital. police say they did not know each other, nor did they know the suspect. police caught up with him and found the weapon he used. as you can imagine, this has caused delays both the a and c

lines going in both directions. one woman having to on to opt for the bus this evening. >> it does scare me. getting on the train, it's getting dark out. if it was a random attack, you know, that is quite scary. >> reporter: still no word on a motive for those stabbings, again, those two victims were not hurt, non-life-threatening injuries. and c service has resumed on ralph avenue. back to you. >> thank you. new at 6:00, a young man charged with killing his parents in connecticut and tonight bail has been set at $2.5 million. 27-year-old kyle navin made his first appearance in court on those murder charges. prosecutors say his parents had planned to cut him out of their will. their bodies were found buried in westin. here's more. >> reporter: showing no emotion, stone faced kyle navin appeared in court this morning.

the 27-year-old is formally charged with murdering his parents. the arrest warrant reads like a true crime novel. 30 pages outlining the evidence against him. his lawyer cautioning against a rush to judgment. >> this was an arraignment this morning. it's just the start of the criminal process. it's not a crime. >> reporter: it was early august when jeffrey and jeanette navin disappeared. their bodies were found on friday in a vacant house. the couple owned a garbage hauling business where kyle work. court papers revealed his drug use and strained relationship with his parents and text messages between kyle and his girlfriend, one reads wipe hout the infix. it's the perfect plan. in bridgeport, this belief that their neighbors are accused of such a crime and that navin

stuffed his parents' bodies in garbage bags in the basement next year. >> we have to reserve our judgment until all of the facts are known. >> reporter: navin is being held on $2.5 million bail on the murder charge. but even if that's somehow posted, he would not be released as there's no bail for the federal gun charge. in queens, a man want wanted for drugs in custody for grabbing a dea agent's gun. this happened as agents were trying to make a drug arrest. police say that man, ricardo rosado, took off after the weapon fired. fortunately nobody was hurt. new at 6:00, the corruption trial underway against sheldon silver. was the $3 million he received just normal legal referral fees

that's the issue in this case. >> reporter: he was once one of new york's most powerful politicians. but now could spend rest of his life in prison if convicted. in her opening statement, the chief prosecutor said this case is about power, greed, corruption. she says silver betrayed those he was supposed to serve to line his pockets. for 21 years, he was the speaker but now the first and main accusation is silver directed 500,000 in state money to dr. robert at columbia university in exchange. dr. talk referred asbestos patients to silver and his law firm paid silver $3 million. but defense lawyers say their client did nothing wrong, that it's just how albany does business. the defense says prosecutors --

income and private meeting with lobbyists are perfectly legal. silver's lawyer says that's the system they chose. that's not a crime. he went on to say he went on to direct money to cancer research at columbia. plaintiffs say this was not -- prosecutors say this was not politics as usual. it was bribe and kickbacks. during the opening statements, they listened. he could face 20 years in prison if convicted. well, it's also election day today and the focus is on local races in the trisit area. that includes the entire new jersey state assembly, five seats and senate seats and the bridgeport connecticut mayor al case. one of the other big races is on long island. maddie line singas is running

this is at jerome avenue. the biggest delays are in the westbound lanes. but it's a mess everywhere in that area. a new clue tonight in the mystery of what caused a russian plane to crash in egypt. u.s. satellite images show heat around the plane just before it crashed. officials say it could indicate an engine explosion or possibly a bomb. a missile strike was ruled out because neither a launch nor engine burn were defected. the black boxes are being examined in egypt to determine what caused the plane to break apart. all 224 people on board were killed. new at 6:00, a popular and long-running food pantry in new jersey tonight forced to look for a new facility to give out free food. >> the pantry distributing the food for 27 years out of a hall at the church in newark. but the church closed and now the property is up for sale. >> one out of five kids in new jersey goes to bed hungry every night. here's mallory hoff. >> reporter: a line of people waiting for food forms quickly

on tuesday afternoons at the parish hall on market street in newark. the pantry has served the community for 27 years. >> if it weren't for the pantry, i don't know what i would do. >> reporter: the episcopal diocese owns the property that sits across the street from a construction site. for three years after the church closed its doors, volunteers were allowed to continue to operate the pantry. so when for sale signs went up, they were taken by surprise. the people who run the pantry said they've been told they can stay through december. after that, they will need to find a new location. >> we need a space where the people in this community, it's close by that they can come and get their food. >> reporter: lewis meggette was a member of the church and organized a group of ten volunteers who serve as many as 500 people a month. the food is provided by new jersey in hillside. >> very, very sad.

something that makes me want to cry. we're doing the best that we can. >> it helps me out a lot. >> reporter: you make one of those boxes last a month. >> yes. >> reporter: the episcopal diocese of newark released a statement saying in part there are several other food pantries in close proximity and the members there have been encouraged to be in conversation with them to explore the possibility of combining services at another location. the volunteers say they hope whoever purchases the property listed at over a million dollars will help them out. in the meantime, they are searching for a new location to feed the hungry. >> i hope they find something. >> yes. a real jolt for procrastinators. the new starbucks is out. guess what can't be too far back. enjoying the gorgeous early fall-like weather, right, lee? >> reporter: well, 69 degrees at 6:00, liz. people watching on columbus avenue. fantastic.
