the pilot, former u.s. walmart ceo bill simon, deployed the emergency chute which floated the plane to a road in fayetteville. the plane did hit a truck with a woman and two children inside, leaving the woman in shock. it's not the first time a plane's parachute has saved lives. >> so fast. >> so fast. >> just happened too quick. >> reporter: a texas couple narrowly escaped this fiery crash last month. their plane's chute got tangled up in power lines preventing it from hitting the ground. >> parachute definitely saved our lives. when we stopped, both of us at the same time said let's get out of here. >> reporter: the plane in arkansas has now been moved and the faa is investigating. for "nightline," i'm david gurley. it's been said both optimist and pessimist contribute to society. the optimist is the airplane, the pessimist, the parachute. thanks for watching abc news.

subway stop on eastern parkway and rogers avenue in crown heights. >> eyewitness news reporter josh einiger tweeting this photo of a line of cops searching for clues. the question now, why did this happen. josh. >> reporter: first of all we will say the victim was not seriously hurt. that's not really the issue here. the issue here is that police still don't know what the motive was in this attack, and that's why over the past hour this seen has expanded exponentially. it is an enormous crime scene, eastern parkway and rogers avenue. eastern parkway is shut down on the service road as they search for clues. in the past few minutes we received a copy of the radio transmission as this volunteer medic called for help. >> i've been stabbed! >> reporter: after his urgent call for help this cell phone video captured the chaotic

in the back of his own ambulance. >> i saw lights and sirens. i came over here and i saw the guy was stabbed loaded into >> reporter: police sources say they believe a man possibly wearing a mask approached the victim from behind and slashed him in the back with no warning and without a word before running' investigators believe the attacker but at this point they have no idea what the motive was in this apparently unprovoked attack. >> with the stabbings that have taken plaps israel, we cannot be relaxed when you investigate something of this magnitude. we need to determine if it was a hate crime, and we need to use all the video footage to apprehend the person. >> reporter: and to be clear, police have not at this point said one way or another whether or not they believe

bias attack or anything else. they're looking for surveillance video throughout this neighborhood. we'll keep following it. live in the crown heights section of brooklyn, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. new information on another stabbing in brooklyn. subway riders attacked by a man with a razor blade. tonight one of the victims describes the harrowing experience on a manhattan- bound c train. jim. >> reporter: the c-train was pretty crowded. most people coming back from work, but matthew was heading to work when one of the passengers pulled a box cutter and slashed another passenger within seconds. matthew -- matthew rupp tried to get away.

both men were taken to a hospital. one said, i was just on my way to work and the guy seemed like any other dude on the subway, then he pulled a box someone. i tried to escape to the next subway car but he got on top of pee and cut a gash in my head. the man left the scene but police say he was arrested a short time later with the box cutter in his hand. he says he will be okay and could be released as early as tomorrow. police arrested 29-year-old stanley gray. he was charged with saw. police say he has a history of emotional issues and some violence in his background. matthew says' in a lot of pain but otherwise doing okay. reporting live from brownsville tonight, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> jim, thank you. breaking news in the shooting death of a police officer in illinois whose killing triggered a massive manhunt that failed to turn up any suspects.

press that tomorrow authorities will announce the officer committed suicide. 52-year-old charles joseph glennowitz radioed that he was chasing three men on foot when backup officers arrived, they found his body 50 yards from his squad car. an mta bus driver charged in the deadly hit-and-run of a woman in brooklyn. carol bell, using a walker, crossing at the corner when she was hit by the bus which was making a left turn, right into her. police say the driver, 4-year- old paul roper, just left the scene leaving the victim to day in street. >> she was a generous person, kindhearted, giving. her death is just shocking. >> loper is expected in court tomorrow.

taking all our parking spots here, so we had to move to different vehicles to make it convenient. >> reporter: while some have found ways around the detours, others, he is special businesses in this corridor, have no choice but to stay put and endure. despite the mta projecting additional delays with the second phase of the project from 96th street to 125th, not even getting underway until beyond 2019. >> it's beyond upsetting. i'm speechless. people generally avoiding this area because of the construction. >> reporter: john's shop has been open seven months. he worries how the disruptions will further detour what he says is already slim foot traffic. >> i really hope something changes, but three years is a very long time. a lot of businesses might not survive two years. >> reporter: people who live nearby say their patience is wearing thin, and they're questioning if the current

abc7ny.com. this was also election night in ohio where voters rejected a ballot measure that would have permitted marijuana for both medical and recreational use. it was an expensive campaign and legal fight. right now just four states allow recreational use of marijuana. new at 11:00, a startling revelation about rappers and two murders. fbi documents show agents were looking into whether members of the group ordered the murders of two drug dealers in the '90s. an attorney for one of the defendants wants to see every police report about the staten island rap group's alleged involvement. no comment from any members of the group. and in connecticut, a man accused of killing his parents now officially charged with their murder. 27-year-old kevin naven arraigned today where bail was set at $2.5 million. his parents, jeanette and jeffrey, vanished in august.

on friday their bodies were found buried in the yard of a vacant home. court papers detail the drug use and strained relationship with his parents. straight ahead on eyewitness news at 11:00, valuables swiped right out of people's cars. drivers are shocked when they find out what took their stuff. it niece one you'd ever expect. and first a fire, now new problems for that taco bell executive caught on camera beating up a driver from uber. this is anything but typical, 64, clear skies. parts of the area got close to 80 degrees a little cooler in spots tomorrow. big changes okay, so everyone is saying, "hurry! you gotta get fios" but why?

have been tied to the outbreak in washington and oregon. they should be able to track down the exact source. an executive with taco bell facing criminal charges after he was caught on camera driver. benjamin gold facing assault and battery and could get up to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine. he was ordered out of the car for being drunk, then seen on camera beating the driver. he was fired as brand manager. air bag manufacturer takata slapped with adds 70 million fine. the japanese company is beg fined by u.s. auto safety regulators fore the defect now linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide. takata has agreed to phase out air bag inflators that use

and on thursday i think we'll have some low cloudy pes. but that's just minor. the overall pattern still way above average. the jet stream to the north. until this front comes through late friday night, gusty breezes sends our temperatures back to normal. very little rainfall. 40s in the suburbs, mid-50s in the park. tomorrow highs in the upper 60s to around 70. fast forward tomorrow night at this time. still comfortable. look at how the low clouds increase thursday. more cloudiness and probably just shy of that 70-degree mark. mainly clear, 58. up to 70 tomorrow with lots of sunshine. absolutely gorgeous. patchy clouds work in tomorrow night. on your seven-day forecast there's more clouds on thursday, maybe a sprinkle late day. friday the clouds should break up. if they do by late morning we have a shot at that record high, tying it, then late-day showers but there is some question to the clearing there. by the time we get to saturday

in tonight's health alert another reason to limit those sugary beverages. a new study suggests sweetened drinks could contribute to heart failure. researchers found men who drink two or more glasses of soda or other sweetened drinks a day have a 23% highgher risk of heart failure. scientists say all that sugar leads to weight gain and obesity which can lead to heart problems. a parachute but not in the likely way, likely saving the
