head wound on social media. stacey sager has more from us. stacey. >> reporter: well, the suspect in this case is 29-year-old stanley gray of brooklyn. authorities now say not only have they recovered his box cutter from the crime scene, they say they also found two steak knives inside his jacket when they arrested him on tuesday. >> it was a completely random crime and so it strikes fear in anyone who rides the city subways. authorities say it was tuesday here on the c train in bedford that 29-year-old stanley gray took out a box cutter and passengers. one of them, 23-year-old matthew ruff, who moved here only a few months ago from florida and now told us he has 28 stitches on his head.

passenger slashed, o'neil mendez >> did your son do this? >> no comment. >> the suspect's father said nothing on his behalf today. authorities said plenty. first, they uncovered the box cutter from the crime scene and found two steak knives inside gray's jacket when he was arrested. as for his criminal history, eyewitness news learned he has used three different names, has 18 prior arrests for robbery, assault and fair beat and also a felony drug conviction. his case not only giving new yorkers the jitters but a sign of troubling signs. according to the nypd there's been 2,004 compared to only 865 crimes during the same time last year. that's a 7.5% increase. >> reporter: now, stanley gray

as for one of his alleged victims, matthew ruff, he tells me via e-mail it's certainly going to be challenging dealing with the anxiety of riding the subway again but he said it has not lessened his drive to be a part of new york city. >> thank you. police in the bronx are investigating a deadly accident involving a dump truck and a woman crossing the street. investigators say 55-year-old flooria burden was hit by the truck in hunts point this morning. she died a short time later. the driver remained at the scene and was questioned by police. no charges have been filed. new information on that deadly plane crash in queens. the ntsb begins its investigation. the organization is now removing the last pieces of that small plane from the

body was recovered, an unidentified 57-year-old man. the plane was traveling in philadelphia to new hampshire when something went wrong. >> witnesses reported seeing the airplane descend and impact the water. we will be looking into the man, the machine and the environment during this investigation. >> right now the ntsb said it has most of the wing and part of the fuselage. crews are still looking for the engine. tonight a murder mystery in sul folk county. police found 52-year-old robert berks shot dead in front of his home. call police if you have any information. a wake is underway right now for a popular new jersey pastor who was found dead in his church. mourners are pouring into the christian love baptist church in irvington to pay their respects to reverend ron christian. christian was a former heroin addict who said the church helped him turn his life around. his funeral is on saturday.

e new information on history found by workers underneath one of new york's most popular parks. tim flesher tweeted out today the moments experts told us about the two vaults filled with human remains discovered at washington square park. archaeologists are now examining the contents. tim has more. >> new light is reaching into the fast with the first look into this burial vault. unknown and unearthed as workers here along the eastern side of washington square park were making improvements. >> how exciting is this to find? >> it's definitely exciting. it's always interesting. >> alisa has been inside this vault and this second vault taking pictures and is now

hoping to piece together a bigger historical picture, especially from the second vault holding coffins with name plates. >> hopefully some high resolution photography we'll be able to read some of the names and be able to research who these people are. >> the city's department of design and construction overseas the project and has now stopped work. >> we'll start looking at how to really start our project to minimize any impact to the vaults. >> there was a potter's field in the park at one point but these are believed to be part of a cemetery. >> this was part of a church cemetery. we did have some indication that there's a demarcation between the poters field and cemetery. >> the first vault was largely empty except for these remains in one corner. >> structurally they look very good. >> it's about every day people and that's what we're trying to learn, the story of every day

nearly a year after a metro north train accident killed six people not one change has been made to the crossing where it happened. the government insists the area is safe. what's missing? in documents obtained by the eyewitness news investigators we found out. the government said that crossing meets all safety standards. >> but others insist it still very dangerous. eyewitness news reporter jeff hoffer is here with more. gym.

-- jim >> reporter: not a single change after safety upgrades were planned. we've been trying to find out what the state department of transportation saw as the problem there and why they failed to fully fix it. >> the new york department of transportation says the crossing where the six people died last february currently meeting all federal safety standards even though safety improvements planned back in 2009 were left unfinished. >> in an attempt to find out what those improvements were and most importantly why they were needed we found a freedom of information request with the d.o.t. in response we received this 7-page document marked project proposal. >> the crucial information detailing safety problems at the crossing and how the d.o.t. planned to fix them are redacted, completely blacked out. >> there's no question they

>> allen brody insists it's what killed his wife and five others when she drove her car into the path of a metro north train. >> the document could make the difference between my wife's life and all these other folks that went before. >> with the documents do tell us is that whatever was going to be built at that crossing would have cost $140,000. the federal government was going to pay 90% but when the state didn't move forward with the improvements they lost the money. >> the d.o.t. tells us that they made most of the safety improvements mentioned in this 2009 report including adding two of these do not stop on track signs and also installing a system that syncs traffic with the light out on the parkway. >> after the accident the d.o.t. came out here again to take a look at the railroad crossing and they found no new safety improvements were necessary.

er top railroad control specialist for the federal government agreed to take a look at the crossing at night around the exact time of the deadly accident. >> i've been in this business for 56 years. i see something like that and that's a willful violation of people and their safety. >> among his long list of problems is how dark the crossing is and the lack of any lighting to illuminate it at night. compare it to the crossing a half mile away. the signs are nearly useless at night he said because they are positioned out of the reach of car head lights and then there's the absence of crossing bells. >> sex people -- six people were killed. do we need a larger body count? >> reporter: the state said they blocked out part of the 2009 project because it was a initial proposal, not a final

the only part of the project the d.o.t. said it did not complete is additional crossing lights. as for the lack of bells, the d.o.t. said since there's no pedestrian traffic at the crossing bells are not required, instead all trains must sound their horns. >> thank you. animal rescue crews on long island seized dozens of cats from a woman's home but the request for help came from an unusual source. the homeowner, a woman in her 60s, arranged to have the cats taken from her home on north boulevard because she was unable to care for them any longer. the cats appeared to be well nourished and in relatively good health. >> we've seen abuse cases where they have been in deliberately harmed. it's not the case here. it's an out of control situation. >> the cats will be taken to a veterinary hospital in queens to be spade, neutered and vaccinated and then will be available for adoption. make over of the nassau

trying to ease concerns many parents have, how safe is a day care where they leave their children. >> tonight a new plan from lawmakers who say a lack of transparency about inspection records is puts children at risk. >> rob nelson is in the south bronx. rob. >> reporter: good even ing. this report that was released today looked at about 2,300 day care centers across new york city over the last three years. the number one violator was this day care right behind me, the bright side academy in the south bronx. as the report made very, very clear the problem is a whole lot bigger than just one building. >> the report found more than

2013, an average of eight per day care with brooklyn faring the worse. everything from disapair to failure to provide background checks on employees and workers untrained in life saving procedures. hundreds of centers are repeat offenders and still remain open. >> the system now stinks. >> state senators are now proposing legislation that would create a letter grade system for city day cares, similar to how restaurants are defined. >> you're seeing them around the city and i think it begs the question how safe are they. >> day care inspection records can be found online but the senators say they're difficult for parents to get to. senators showed this video today where day care officials repeatedly lied to undercover parents about having a good track record. >> a lot of working families in new york city are not getting

>> at less than 4 months old little carl taundro died during his first day at soho child care. the cause of death is still unclear but no one on state had proper medical training when they found carl unresponsive. today his dad backed the plan. >> it's important that these day care centers be held to safety standards in an open way. >> here at the bright side academy the director was blind sided by the news today and had no comment. >> if we actually provide information on how clean or sanitary someone's eatery is we should have the same type of service for where we put our children. >> reporter: now the city's health department which managers these day care care centers said they will review this latest proposal and they have closed dozens of unpermitted centers.
