grazed in the head by a bullet talking about the terrifying moment when gunshots erupted outside her home. it's an eyewitness exclusive. >> plus, developing right now, a vicious and bloody attack at a guard on rikers island. two teenagers grabbing that guard and slashing him in the face. >> it's a very busy night. good evening at 11:00. i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm sade baderinwa. we begin with breaking news. a horth scene -- a horrible scene on a street in queens. a bus driver ran down a woman. >> jim dolan is there for us tonight. >> a really disturbing scene here tonight. a woman crossing main street in flushing, not at the intersection, not against a light, and she was hit by a bus. the driver of the bus apparently unaware that he had hit anybody and so the driver kept going and of course that meant that traffic kept moving, several vehicles hitting the victim in the street.

one woman finally saw the body there and got out of her car. >> i ran to the corner. i grabbed large boxes, large cardboard boxes at least three feet high to block the bod so the cars would not keep trying to go over that body. then i immediately went to park my car. >> this was apparently a tourist type bus, not an mta bus. the driver has still not been found. the police were earlier saying this was a female victim but a police officer told me moments ago the body is in very bad shape. they really can't tell whether it was a man or woman. again, one person dead here today after being hit by a bus. the driver of that bus, a tourist-type bus, apparently unaware that he had hit anybody, kept driving. reporting live from flushing. jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. now to a developing story. a blood ae

y and brutal attack at rikers. two inmates against one guard. the correction officer put in to a chokehold then slashed. josh einiger with shrurfb -- with exclusive details about the guard's injuries. >> the investigation is just getting underway. i've learned from a source close to the investigation that investigators have now found tape recordings of phone calls from at least one of these two inmates to someone on the outside of rikers island in which the inmate was plotting an attack on a correction officer just like the one tonight. eyewitness news obtained this picture of the injured correction officer, the image so graphic and bloody, we had to blur it before putting it on tv. this is the result of what the department of correction calls an unprovoked attack at rikers island this afternoon. >> his condition is stable. however, he has over 20 stitches that he will be scarred for the rest of his life.

president of the union and says two inmates, both with known gang affiliations, attacked the officer with no provocation. one holding the officer and the other with a blade cutting him. emergency responders on a different call tonight ran in to the cell and rescued their brother officer. the gash in his face so deep, he was rushed to nearby booth memorial hospital where he needed nearly 20 stitches. it comes on the same day new use of force policies unveiled which among other things prevent officers from hitting inmates in the face. safety, the department released in a statement tonight, is the commissioner's top priority and he has zero tolerance for assaults on staff. the department is seeking rearrest of any inmate involved. >> i think that in all due respect to the commissioner of the agency, he's surrounded individuals that don't know security and don't know the department of correction and this is yet another example of how a correction officer will

eventually lose their life in the confines of a jail because of mismanagement. >> sources say in the case of these two inmates, one of them is 18. one of them is 19 years old. one of the two is currently awaiting trial on a murder charge. as of september 30th, 272 correctional officers had been attacked this year so far. that's according to the union. it's now up to the bronx da to file charges of assault against these two inmates but according to the union that has not happened yet. we're live outside rikers tonight, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> disturbing story. tonight the mother of an 8-year-old girl who was shot in the head during a police shootout in new jersey tonight talking to us about what happened to her daughter and how she's doing and how the family feels about being an innocent bystander caught in the middle of gun violence. eyewitness news reporter aj ross with her exclusive interview.

the jersey shore in asbury park. >> that shootout between police and that suspect happened just feet away from where i'm standing at this intersection. as you mentioned, one of the bullets in that exchange grazed an innocent 8-year-old little girl. we did speak with her mother a short time ago. she's speaking out and now she's worried if her family can recover from this. >> it happened so quick. between her screaming and the pop. >> reporter: a stray bullet narrowly missed 8-year-old cassie jones and her 6-year-old sister as they were watching a movie in their mother's bedroom wednesday night. >> cassie screams, oh, my god. ow. i've been shot. >> reporter: the girl's mother says adrenaline immediately took over when she heard the gunfire followed by the daughter's screams. it wasn't until she dragged them in to a nearby bathroom that she discovered cassie had been grazed across her forehead just below the hairline leaving a bloody gash.

>> i didn't know what was going on. i didn't know if the bullet went in. i didn't know anything. it was just scary. >> reporter: according to investigators the gunfire was the result of a nearby shoot out between police and a suspect now identified as 19-year-old dante allen. at this point it's not clear which gun the bullet that struck cassie came from but the little girl is lucky to be alive. >> very scary. i'm looking at her today like oh, my god. you're here. >> reporter: now afraid to go back to the place they've called home, cassie and her family are living in a nearby hotel hoping help from others will enable them to move to another neighborhood. >> it's supposed to be safe there. it's just not. >> that suspect in the shooting, dante allen, is facing several charges including attempted murder. his bail was set at $1 million. live tonight in asbury park, aj ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. we are learning more about

the pilot of a small plane that crashed off of breezy point in queens. 57-year-old brad mcgee was a harvard educated navy commander and successful businessman. he earned a pilot's license three years ago. he was flying solo in a single engine plane last night when the aircraft plunged in to the waters. there's no indication he made a mayday call. president obama tonight weighing in on the possibility that a terrorist bomb caused a crash in the russian passenger plane in egypt. no definitive evidence that it was a bomb despite claims by isis that it was responsible for the crash. british and u.s. intelligence indicate an explosive was the probable cause. investigators reviewing chatter from isis militants intercepted after the crash. tonight president obama saying it is possible a bomb was onboard. >> we're going to spend a lot of time just making sure that our own investigators, our own intelligence community figures out exactly what's going on before we make any definitive pronouncements, but it is certainly possible that there was a bomb onboard.

new and troubling details tonight about the illinois police officer who shot and killed himself after apparently embezzling money for years from a youth program. authorities say months before officer charles gliniewicz staged his suicide to appear as though he died in the line of duty, he tried to find a hitman to kill an official he feared would expose him as a thief. >> he wanted to speak to this high ranking motorcycle gang member to initiate a hit. >> police are investigating the officer's widow and one of his sons in connection with the embezzlement scheme. new at 11:00, the former taco bell executive caught on camera wailing on an uber driver in california, now speaking out about what he said happened. the dash cam recorded ben golden hitting edward caban in the orange county city of costa mesa. he was pepper-sprayed, arrested and lost his job as a

it's mild and murky early on tomorrow. as we go through the late morning and midday the clouds start to thin out a little bit. we're still on track for record highs tomorrow afternoon. slow clearing saturday. more clouds on the coast. back to normal by sunday. a little over mild visibility in white plains. right now visibility isn't too bad but the ceiling is down around 1,000 feet and that will continue in to the morning hours. these are the areas like point pleasant, wrightstown in the upper 70s to near 80. probably a little cooler on the island of connecticut. your clearing is a little slower but still very mild. hudson valley should do well in the middle 70s. fog early at 64. clouds start to break around midday, 72. mid and upper 70s during the afternoon. then a cold front is coming in during the early evening hours with a skinny line of showers. notice the winds are picking up during the day tomorrow. there's one wave of drizzle. we've had a few of them and mist during the evening hours. nothing to the wsern radar yet but likely to

reform overnight. high pressure is offshore. we have this wind coming off the water but as we go through the night in to tomorrow, more of a southwest wind. there's the severe weather over the heartland. that southwest wind is what will crank temperatures. we got to 71 with a southwest wind, upper 70s to near 80 in pittsburgh, charleston, west virginia. that's the type of air coming our way. futurecast looks like this. little patchy drizzle. mild tomorrow morning . clouds thinning midday. spiking and peaking in the afternoon. late friday night, no problem. have to watch out for the predawn hours south and east. it's mild with low clouds and fog. sprinkles or mist to start your day. then you'll need the sunglasses midday and afternoon. we'll smash the record of 74 from 1948 going with a high of 77. 59 tomorrow night. early shower. much of the night is dry and light rain south and east. on saturday, a little bit more sun to the north. back in to the 60s. more clouds to the south. on sunday, we're going to look for a great day with sunshine.

expectant mothers across the country pack on excessive pounds while pregnant. experts caution the extra weight can lead to negative health effects for mom and baby. this is a story of a driver who was pulled over for speeding and she gets a very big surprise. flowers. and kindness. during a traffic stop in somerville, massachusetts the officer noticed the woman behind the wheel was crying. robin sutherland told the cop her mother was coming home for end of life hospice care. the officer let her go with a warning and later the officer sent a bouquet of flowers with a handwritten note signed the officer who pulled you over. >> i felt bad i couldn't sit there and talk with her and give her a hug. after she left, i thought about it and it didn't leave me. i thought i'd do something nice and just send her some flowers to put a smile on her face. >> it certainly did. ours as well. her gesture of kindness has since gone viral. two stories in the last 10 minutes that leave you smiling. and feeling good.
