a 9-year-old girl died after a pill bull mauled her while playing with friends in the backyard of a long island home. tonight, a family friend opens up exclusively to eyewitness news as police arrest the dog's owner. plus, three pedestrians hit and killed this weekend. while trying to cross the street here in new york city, the latest on the deaths contributing to an alarming trend. >> good evening everyone, i'm joe torres. >> and i'm sandra bookman. tonight that 9-year-old girl has died. following that vicious dog attack in elmont.

>> police say the what are toying moments -- horrifying moments played out in the backyard of a home on holland avenue as the victim played with two other children. eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson has the latest on this developing story from franklin, long island jewish hospital in valley stream. kemberly? >> reporter: joe, family friends here at the hospital tell eyewitness news this 9- year-old was beautiful inside and out. an angel on earth who loved playing with her little brother. their one wish, to turn time back, bring back this vibrant little girl. >> it was a violent attack, i can say that. >> reporter: a deadly attack this little girl witnessed. watched as a pit bull mauled her 9-year-old friend. >> my granddaughter 18 years old -- is 8 years old. she's been through enough all right? >> reporter: late today officers carried away the

the dog zeroed in on a 9-year- old little girl here in the backyard and witnesses tell me shook her like a rag doll. >> she was an angel. i don't know any other girl little girl -- that is as sweet happy and smart. brilliant little girl. >> reporter: she heard screams and ran towards 236 holland avenue around 10:30 this morning. >> i said are you guys trying to get the dog off? she said no, she can't do anything. because she tried with a broom. but the dog was too big. it was attacking her she was scared. >> reporter: the victim's parents had dropped her off here to play with two other girls. including this one, her mom this woman, also heard the initial scream and tried to pull the animal off but couldn't. he was relentless. when police arrived. two officers ran around the back of the home, a third went through the home to get to the yard. >> she opened the door. the dog took her attention off the 9-year-old girl and charged the officer, the officer

discharged her weapon killing the dog. the other two officers who were there able to rip open the fence and get to the girl. >> reporter: the pit belonged to carlisle arnold. he was arrested outside of the home on an unrelated matter. the 29-year-old was not here at the time of the attack. police say there is no history they've never been called to this home because of the dog. neighbors tell me the pit didn't seem aggressive. >> it's a little surprising, i didn't think he would maul anybody but you never know. >> reporter: now that unrelated matter, carlisle arnold was arrested for violating an order of protection. it's not clear who that was against. so far, no charges in this case but we'll have much more on the story coming up on eyewitness news at 11:00. kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. a deadly weekend on the streets of new york city. as three more pedestrians lost their lives, their deaths contribute to a recent uptick in accidents. the latest victims include an

upper west side this morning. and a 68-year-old man run down in ozone park, queens. last night. eyewitness news reporter cefaan kim reports for us on the upper west side tonight. >> reporter: well, joe, neighbors here say 88-year-old louisa rosario was a grandmother to everyone. she was loved by everyone. she was struck and killed by a cab early sunday morning, she was one of three pedestrians killed since friday. >> you know if you need a plate of food, she had a plate of food for you. and she was everybody's loved one. >> reporter: friend of 88-year- old louisa rosario heart broken after she was struck and killed by a cab a memorial know grows at the -- now grows at the back entrance of the building. she was the grandmother to everyone. and employees at the hardware store across the street say she was stopping in every day to say hello. they had just seen her laughing and joking hours before she

lost her life. >> a good woman. everybody knows her in the whole community. i'm talking about everybody. black hispanic, everybody. >> reporter: but how? >> because she gets along with everybody. >> reporter: cops say around 12:30 sunday morning when she was hit by a cab making a right turn. the taxi driver remained at the scene and was arrested charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian. she was the third pedestrian struck and crossing a new york city street since friday. saturday night, a 68-year-old man was killed in ozone park, queens. cops say the driver remained at the scene. just after 5:00 on friday a crash claimed the life of a woman crossing west end avenue near west 64th street. 11 pedestrian fatalities now since last -- fatalities now since last week. mayor bill de blasio saying the plan is working. the mayor noting the number of failure to yield tickets issues this year is higher than last year. >> i think a lot of people is

people -- it is people who have a license but are driving too fast. that's the number one problem and not being mindful and not respecting pedestrians, that's why i say this. failure to yield has been a huge issue. >> reporter: now it's important to keep in mind that failure to yield tickets are up because enforcement up but the mayor says traffic deaths are down 16% this year compared the last year. reporting live, cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. behind bars tonight after police say he posed as a cab driver and attacked a woman. prosecutors say 22-year-old adil raja pretended to be a car service driver and offered that woman a ride in patchogue. about 4:00 yesterday morning. when the woman was inside the car, he allegedly threatened her with a bb gun and then sexually assaulted her. she was able to get away and call police who arrested him a short time later. and now investigators are trying to determine if there are other victims.

>> it's a disturbing incident. we think it's an isolated incident at this time but we are asking the public if anyone else was a victim of a similar incident to just give us a call. >> he was arraigned on first degree rape charges and his attorney says he denies the allegations. and says his client will fight the charges. police are hoping surveillance video will lead to the arrest of a man who robbed a business in the bronx. security cameras recorded the suspect going behind the counter of a laundromat in the hunt's point section and using machete to pry open a locked cabinet. the suspect grabbed some cash and ran off. no injuries were reported. now also on long island, four men are charged with burglary for allegedly robbing a home in west islip. suffolk county police say the men hit two people with a bat and then stole several items this morning about 2:30. using descriptions from a resident an officer found all four of those suspects in a vehicle nearby. two victims had to be taken to

they were treated for non-life- threatening injuries. new details tonight about the russian airliner that crashed in egypt. flight recorders captured a brief and mysterious click. exactly what that click is remains under representation. at this point, u.s. official -- investigation. at this point u.s. officials say all signs point to a bomb. they are now searching for evidence of an explosion at the crash site. >> every bomb sort of has a signature, a chemical signature that will be left on whatever it blows up. >> all 224 people died when the jet went down en route from a popular egyptian resort destination to moscow last weekend. a call for big change on school buses. the federal highway safety chief wants seat belts to keep children safe. the head of the national highway traffic safety administration made that call at a transportation conversation today in virginia. mark rosekind says the federal government's, state, school districts and bus manufacturers

need to work together to make this happen. concerns tonight that a new brand of peanut butter could make children too caffeinated. steam peanut butter just launched last year with sales mostly online and a few small shops in the northeast. one serving contains 170- milligrams of caffeine. senator charles schumer says that's five times more caffeine than a single can of coke. >> not recommended for young children, pregnant women or people sensitive to caffeine. >> now the developers say the caffeine is released slowly because peanut butter takes longer to digest than coffee. the senator schumer wants the fda to investigate. thousands of orthodox jewish rabbis are gathered in brooklyn. >> they are part of the sect and are here for a leadership convention. participants came from as far

the st. patrick's cathedral in midtown manhattan was one of many churches that honored veterans during services today. >> timothy cardinal dolan opened mass with special dedication honoring the men and women in uniform. active members of the armed forces presented the flag and read bible verses during the service. >> for gold star families that having lost loved ones in service to our nation, they may find support and their parish communities. we pray to the lord. >> lord hear our prayer. >> cardinal dolan also said a prayer paying tribute to the active duty military members and their families. stolen service medals are being replaced. 93-year-old ann burns lost two brothers if world war ii and held open to the medals for decades. four years ago two purple hearts given to one of the brothers were stole machine a burglary.

some new research may give new meaning to the phrase "some like it hot." or not. climate change may cut into your sex drive. the national bureau of economic research found that just one day over 80 degrees average nationwide meant 1100 fewer births. we have about 30 days a year when that happens. but with global warming, that number could increase to 90 days over the next several years. now the researchers say that extra colder days do not make up the difference. >> go to jeff next with weather. >> yeah really. on all things weather? come on. >> people spending time outdoor

toms river. so if you head down to the pine barens of southern new jersey you're going to be getting quite cold overnight tonight. well down into the 30s and well down into the lower 30s over eastern parts of suffolk county on long island. that's why we have that freeze warning in effect 1:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on monday. so the growing season effectively ends there. the radar satellite, showing absolutely nothing over the tristate area. but there are some clouds and there's a lot of rainfall off to our south. in fact flooding rainfall over parts of the southeast. this system will move up the coast during the next 48 to 72 hours. and that will introduce some downpours into our forecast during the day on tuesday. also we're watching the possibility of tropical development here over the bahamas. the good news is though this storm would move north and eventually off to sea. being shoved offshore by the same system on tuesday that will give us rainfall. lows tonight in the moan time 44 in the park and one of the nights where it's clear and it's calm.

get a lot colder than the city on these nights. 29 monticello. a lot of 30s down the jersey shore and highs tomorrow up to about 61. with a lot of sunshine it's going to feel pretty darn nice tomorrow. plenty of sunshine and 61 and there goes high pressure offshore. that will introduce periods of rain during the day on tuesday. i think the wettest period would be from late morning into the afternoon hours. highs still managing to get up to 61. and there's really no cold arctic air in sight. really staying put with the el nino pattern in place with a ring strong zonal flow from west to east. a starry night out there. much cooler in the suburbs and down to 44 though in midtown. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. 61. tomorrow night increasing clouds and a little bit of rain toward daybreak, down to 51. as your accuweather seven forecast periods of rain on tuesday. the heaviest rain could be from late morning into the afternoon. 61. breaking into some sunshine on wednesday. 61 and then periods of rain

league in the early games today, pantser undebeeted fence the packers and the titans stun the saints in overtime. the steelers bad the raiders on a -- beat the raiders on a last second funk. the patriots -- field goal. the patriots beat the redskins 27-10. the bills get a divisional win before the thursday night match- up coming up against the jets. this afternoon it was a battle of two proud yet struggling franchises. as the knicks hosted the lakers at madison square garden. a pair of teams that had three wins combined so far this season. heading in. the good news though somebody had to get a win today. new york clashed with kobe kobe bryant and -- kobe bryant and company and speaking of kobe, first game at the guard machine three years. could be his last if he retires. his good friend carmelo anthony still trying to find a groove this young season. that will help. he has 24 and once again the double/double. 12 points the 10 rebounds for the rookie. the knicks made up after the break with more. 99-95 hugs all around. the knicks improve to 3-4. the islanders have just one
