left of the main house thattics loaded. and the -- exploded. and the house right next door a tremendous amount of damage done to that house. now we did talk to officials earlier today. they told us that even though one person died, this could have been much much worse. because they're u they're lucky the explosion -- they're lucky the explosion didn't lead to a fire. >> i need a paramedic. ivs and stuff. we got one trapped alive and i need ivs. >> reporter: price was still shaking recalling the very moment around 8:00 this morning that the house right next door to his exploded. the earth beneath his feet shook. >> felt the explosion. my walls kept -- came caving in. the windows in my house got blasted out. the entire property pretty much jerked. >> reporter: emergency workers responded quickly. rescuers believe they have been able to locate everyone in the home but they are still looking. >> we're currently interviewing

out who was accounted for and who was not. the fire department is currently shoring you this building. >> reporter: -- up this building. >> reporter: crews called at least 13 people out of the rubble. one of them did not survive. the house that was destroyed was a two family home. officials say it was relatively new but they will check the records see if any gas leak was being done inside the home. >> the explosion pancaked the second floor onto the first floor and the down. >> reporter: this is a google map picture of house before the explosion. and this is what it looks like now. the name of the victim has not yet been released. but according to one neighbor, the family living in the home that exploded had recently moved in. >> doing -- [ inaudible ] >> most of the people were in the rear of the building. some were actually still sleeping at the time of the explosion. and let me tell you, the first responders, the elizabeth fire

department, did an absolutely miraculous job in getting these people out of the building. 15 of them were evacuated by us. and one self-admitted himself to the hospital for checkup. the surrounding buildings are a total of seven buildings that have been impacted. the rest of those buildings were self-evacuated. but we don't know if any of those folks were injured. we don't believe so at this time because nobody has checked into the local hospital from any of the surrounding buildings. surrounding buildings, that is unknown at this point. because they all self- evacuated. because there was holiday, this was a duplex, 13 people were -- 14 people were actually in the -- 14 or 15 were in the house, we don't know if there were any illegal apartments at this time. that's all going to be part of

[ inaudible ] it's relatively new. it's -- the construction is probably between eight and ten years old. for this lock, it's relatively blue construction. >> mayor, the extent of damages to the surrounding buildings? >> according to the construction official, at least three of buildings that you visibly can see will have to be removed. one is off the hinges. the one that you -- where the impact was a clearly damaged. and the other one will probably be torn down. the other buildings seem to be structurally sound. but that will require further investigation. >> now do we know if the explosion came from the ground up? >> the explosion occurred on the second floor. there was an initial fire with the explosion. which caused the burns and the fire was self-extinguished after the initial explosion. if there was a large fire here the. the damage would be much much worse. and according to the fire department, if there was a large fire, there would have

been -- there would have been all fatalities. [ inaudible ] >> it doesn't suggest anything at this time. and for any of us to speculate until there's a full investigation would not be fair to anyone involved. [ inaudible ] correct. that's the initial -- >> and you've been listening to the mayor of elizabeth briefing reporters on this latest information on the house explosion. one dead and one unaccounted for and multiple injuries and it's still very much an active investigation. now to eyewitness news reporter trip that is hospital where treated. >> reporter: dave, of those 12 victims, six of them were transported here to trip that is regional medical center including a family of three. who survived. but lived through what the father described as a nightmarish scene. >> just went to sleep.

>> reporter: wayne shepherd had been sleeping in a second floor apartment when the house next door suddenly exploded. his wife and 10-month-old were also in the front of the home. >> we were in the living room. she just just taken -- had just taken him out of his bedroom. the bedroom exploded. >> reporter: they were all able to stumble out through the rubble. and brought to the regional medical center here along with three others. a 33-year-old suffered minor injuries and a 19-year-old suffered trauma. and an 8-year-old was brought to the center later doctors say. >> there was explosions laterally. she was two or three doors down. the mirror came off the wall and struck her in the back. that's why she was transported her but she's going to do fine. >> reporter: the cause of the large number of buildings, 12 in all, dr. john deangelo also rushed to the scene. he says one victim died there. two more suffered serious burns. >> it's a difficult scene. i mean we see trauma daily. but to see someone walk out of their home with severe burns is devastating for everybody.

>> reporter: and the revised number of victims at this hour, there are 16 victims of this fire. and explosion -- the explosion including the one victim who died. the two most seriously injured we are told were also air lift today a burn center. reporting live in elizabeth, tim fleischer, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you tim. stay with eyewitness news as we learn more about the victims and the cause of this explosion. we have a slide show of images from the scene at our website at abcny7. a child therapist in new jersey is accused of sexually abusing a former teenaged patient and federal officials say there may be more victims. 38-year-old elliot halberstam was arrested yesterday and fired from his role at the jewish family service and children's center in clifton. prosecutors say halberstam used texts to coerce a 16-year-old patient into sexual acts which he also recorded. the fbi is investigating the possibility that there are other victims. well, still no answers into a murder mystery in west

chester county as police continue to investigate the murder of 83-year-old lois colley. police say she died of blunt force trauma. a caretaker found her body in the laundry room of her house in north salem on monday. investigators do not consider her wealthy husband a suspect. eugene colley owns a series of mcdonald's restaurants. university of missouri police say the man they arrested for allegedly making online threats is a student at another campus. the threats prompted increased security on campus overnight. the person posting on social media websites yesterday, threatened to quote shoot every black person i see. the threats follow the resignations monday of the university's president and chancellor after student protests over the handling of racial incidents. new details about a small plane crash into an ohio apartment building killing nine people. a florida real estate company now says that five victims were employees and two were executives of their company. everyone who died was on the plane.

the apartment building at the time of the crash yesterday afternoon. the ntsb is investigating the cause of the accident. this of course is veterans day and president obama is spending the morning hon nothinger those who served. he held a private breakfast at the white house and he headed to arlington national cemetery to take part in the annual wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier. >> whether you served proudly in the army, navy, air force, marines, or coast guard, you are part of an unbroken chain of patriots who have served this country with honor through the life of our nation. >> the president also calling on congress to pass a measure that will help military veterans gain easier access to health care, disability and educational benefits. right now, the largest tribute to veterans in the country is happening in manhattan. more than 20,000 people are

marching in the veterans day parade up fifth avenue. eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson is live along the parade route in the flatiron district with more. hey kemberly. >> reporter: hey shirleen. i'm at 28th and fifth and you're right, the parade is slowly moving you fifth avenue. -- up fifth avenue. this is -- kind a lull right here in the activity because they're heading up. we're at 28th street. also alongside of the route, there are people from every general ration really paying tribute to these men and women who have and still do sacrifice so much for this country. i met members of the military who tell me they feel it's their obligation. it's their duty, to march in this parade each day as you -- year as you mentioned. it's the country's largest tribute. taking part, plane and women from every branch of the military. members of the nypd, fdny. even students from west point. this year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of world war ii. the 25th anniversary of desert storm.

gr two law enforcement officers facing murder charges in the death of a 6-year-old boy have been accused of using

a string of civil lawsuits were filed against louisiana officers derrick stafford and norris greenhouse over the past few years. the officers are accused of killing 6-year-old jeremy mardis' death and wounding his father when they opened fire on their car last week. in 2011 stafford was indicted on rape charges in two separate incidents. both charges have been dropped. egypt's president made a surprise visit to sharm el- sheikh airport in an effort to reassure tourists that the red sea resort is safe. planes are landing and taking off from the airport even as countries like britain and russia have banned flights following the crash of a russian plane. the egyptian government is worried about the economic impact of those bans. suspended fifa president sepp blatter remains in a swiss hospital. his spokesman says he is recovering from a small breakdown related to stress. the 79-year-old expects to leave the hospital next monday.

his 90 day provisional ban by the fifa ethics committee over suspected financial misconduct. two fantasy sports companies vow to fight back after the new york state attorney general orders them to stop taking money from new yorkers. eric schneiderman says fan duel and draft kings are illegal gambling operations because the daily contests are games of chance. both companies insist they are legal and that their games are based on skill. an incredible story of survival. a skier takes a terrifying 1600- foot fall down a mountain. and lives to tell all about it. >> taking a live look outside. shall we? a little bit overcast out there.

wi well, this is the bring a mess into your house kind of weather. you know the wind knocks the stuff off the leaves and you track into that the house and then everybody is unhappy. >> just can't avoid it. >> i grew up in a house -- on a farm. it was always that kind of stuff you no -- coming into the house and always the time. and -- all the time. and we didn't have a vacuum cleaner, the vacuum in the lobby, that's not bad. [ laughter ] my grandfather always had a broom with the leaves but it's a windy day and i think you know, one thing we want to emphasize, jeff smith and i talked about this upstairs in the weather office. big wind on friday into friday night and saturday. going to talk about that too. a lot of the rain we had now is kind of shut down.

sprinkles but here at noontime. 52 degrees, the humidity is 77% and the winds are northwest at 7 and the pressure rising a little bit but well below the mark of 30.00. yesterday's high was 57. 56 is our normal. so far i think that's the grand total over the last 36, 48 hours going to come out to about .62 in the park. sunset at 4:42. some breaks of sun best chance of that sunset is going to be south and west. another period of rain tomorrow. we'll talk about that and the chance of some 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts late friday into saturday. 52 here around river dale and looking at 52 white plains and 55 monticello. we're looking at 55 down the shore here. so we're looking at some seven to 12, 13-mile an hour winds out of the northwest here at noontime. with some gusts that have been going to 20. a little breezy and cloudy and a little bit chilly but the last of showers working their warped the low into the atlantic.

you can see there were some breaks of sun earlier and the clouds kind of filled in and now from west to east the clouds will break up a little bit. but tom more showers coming from the system out of the great lakes. breaks of sun. tomorrow at 9:00, there's a a shower at noon. afternoon. but that's gone by sunset. and then we've got some good football weather coming up for tomorrow night. jets and bills at the meadowlands. not a lot of rain coming for tomorrow. looking at a few tenths here on the computer model put out. so the output. we're looking at 60 this afternoon. tomorrow we're looking at 58. a windy blend of clouds and sun. and probably to 60 degrees and then friday, really windy as this wind comes in as i mentioned. so 0-mile-per-hour gusts, it's breezy this afternoon and we're looking at clouds and hopefully a little break of sun on this veterans day. tonight we're down to 50. partly to mostly cloudy. tomorrow, a period or two of rain. which will be in the morning and in the afternoon. and then that clears out tomorrow night. and then we're looking at a

a middle schooler slammed to the ground by a police officer. burglars raise a racket. and a skier survives a terrifying fall. just some of the stories that were caught on camera and caught our attention. we begin in florida where a school resource officer's takedown of a 13-year-old boy has landed him behind bars. it began when officer mario bedea confronted the teen in the lobby of the middle school. he first points at the boy then he grabbed the teen's face and shoves the 84-pound boy so hard, he stumbles backwards. that's when the officer yanks the teen's arm and slams him to

he is charged with felony child abuse. also caught on camera, a pair of burglars at a car dealership in utah. and 30 minutes two crooks broke into an office and tore apart shelves and even jumped on a counter top. to access a metal safe. one of them cut through with a saw. then they grabbed the cash. police think it was an inside job because the thieves knew where the safe was. what it held, and how much time they had to pull off the caper. today, we are hearing from the skier who took a 1600-foot tumble down a mountain. the skier hit a trench during this run in alaska and said that each slam against the ground felt like football linebackers hitting him. >> it surprised the heck out of me. i had no idea that was coming. i knew at that point it was game over. and i was going for the ride of my life. i don't have a death wish. i'm not the type. but i do have a wish to live life to its fullest. and get out there and live my dreams. >> thankfully he survived this and he will be able to live

and we do have breaking news out of elizabeth, new jersey where at least one person is dead after a house exploded. official who is just wrapped up a news conference said 15 people were injured and one person remains unaccounted for. >> it was an initial fire with the explosion. which caused the burns and the fire was self-extinguished after the initial explosion. >> officials say most of the people were in the rear of the building and some were sleeping at the time of the explosion. seven buildings around the home were impacted. and hello again, i'm shirleen allicot. >> and i'm david novarro. we're going to begin this half hour with new information about flags honoring war veterans stolen from a park on long island. >> surveillance images show two men and a woman who snatched the flags. one which is a pow flag. it happened back in august.

releasing those pictures. the flags were stolen from osprey park in mastic beach. long island reporter kristin thorne is live in shirley with more details on this. kristin? >> reporter: well, shirleen, we just caught up with police here at the 7th precinct in shirley. reason why they are putting out the call to the public now for help is because they really have exhausted all their investigative leads since august. so they really want anyone who may know these people to come forward. they want to find the people responsible. this is the video which shows at this point in the video, two people walking up to this flag pole at osprey park in mastic beach. there's a third person standing by there who was involved and another part of the video but either way you see the two struggle to get the northwestern flag down and at the end of it just tear it right off. police say they not only stole the american flag but a pow flag. and a town of brookhaven flag. police say although it's particularly painful to talk

bridget kelly are accused of orchestrating a scheme to gridlock traffic to punish fort lee's mayor for not endorsing christie's re-election bid in 2013. we have new information in the federal corruption trial of former new york assembly speaker sheldon silver. attorneys at a personal injury law firm that hired silver testified that he collected more than $3 million in fees without doing any legal work. prosecutors say the outside income was part of a bribery scheme involving a cancer researcher. they say the doctor gave silver names of asbestos victims in exchange for research grants. now to vote 2016. republican presidential candidates are back on the campaign trail today, spinning their performances from last night's debate in wisconsin. the candidates facing off on the economy and immigration. so who could get a boost from the showdown? abc's megan hughes is live in washington, d.c. with more on this. hi megan. >> reporter: hi there share lean. good afternoon -- shirleen.

good afternoon, last night's debate really did show some sharp differences between the candidates on issues like immigration and spending. now there was no clear winner. now some candidates may disagree. donald trump told a crowd eating eggs in new hampshire he didn't get much sleep last night but he's feeling good. >> we started off with 17. and one by one by one, they're disappearing. disappearing. it's a beautiful thing to watch as they go out. >> reporter: trump's performance in the debate is under scrutiny today from shushing carly fiorina the only female candidate on the stage -- >> why does she keep interrupting everybody? why? >> reporter: to implying he was in the same room as the russian president when he wasn't. >> i got to know him very well. because we were both on "60 minutes." >> reporter: on immigration, john kasich and jeb bush clashed with trump refusing to support his plans for mass deportation.

and it's not embracing american values. and it would tear communities apart. and it would send a signal that we're not -- [ applause ] the kind of country that i know america is. >> reporter: rubio weighed in with his plan on "good morning america." >> have to pass a background check and learn i thinkish and you get a -- english and you get a work permit and that's all you have for at least ten years. i think the way forward can that's my position. >> reporter: front runner carson's position on another issue the minimum wage seemed to change. he favored anen crease for workers in may. last night? >> i would not raise it. >> reporter: now carson was also asked about those media reports detailing discrepancies in his life story. carson said he has no problem being vetted. he has a problem being lied about. in washington, megan hughes, channel 7 eyewitness news shirleen? >> megan thank you so much. we have new video police want you to see of a pair of serial burglars in brooklyn. this surveillance video shows them grabbing a package

containing a queen size bed frame from a williamsburg apartment building. their list of items also includes green tea, all of the burglaries took place last month at the three apartment buildings in williamsburg and green point. a man was slashed and tasered during a home invasion in queens and police are homing surveillance video helps them find the people behind it. police say these two men forced their way inside an apartment on elm avenue on the morning of october 3rd. when the 30-year-old resident encountered them, he was attacked. police say the man's roommate helped the people that broke in navigate the apartment. we want to turn now to meteorologist bill evans, he has the afterschool accuweather forecast out there. >> here we go. we've got skies that will be cloudy. we've got some wind but the temperatures this afternoon going to be close to 59. dropping into the 50s with cloudy skies tonight. after school, it will be dry careful out there. teachers, athletic directors and coaches and all that kind of stuff. it will be breezy and windy and can you understand might need

a new york city police officers are planning another big protest this afternoon. this one at the mayor's home at gracie mansion. last week, they put on a show of force at the home of the mediator who gave them a 1% raise each year to two years. police commissioner bratton says the pba thought he would be more generous but were disappointed. a mother in alabama is accused of spending the night out partying while her 1-year- old daughter was brutally beaten to death. birmingham police say katera lewis left little kelsey home with children all under the age of 8. they say lewis was at a nightclub with a friend when an 8-year-old boy got annoyed with her crying and became violent and killed her. >> 8-year-old really being able to process or even have that much maybe evil in his heart to

the sad part is you had an adult mother here who had the audacity to leave her 1-year- old in the custody of several other children. >> lewis' attorney says his client should not have been charged with manslaughter and he claims she shouldn't be held responsible for someone else acting in a dangerous manner. well, we're learning more about a person of interest in the shooting of a judge. police say chimene onyeri is now charged in an unrelated murder in houston. texas. yeah, he's a scheduled to go before a judge -- actually attacking a judge julie kocurek next month. the judge was wounded by shrapnel during a shooting last week outside of her home in austin, police are working to confirm the judge was targeted because of her work on the bench. a world war ii veteran has reunited with a woman he fell in love with 70 >> yeah, norwood thomas met joyce durant in london during the war.

returned to the u.s. but joyce didn't join him. >> norwood later married and then after his wife died he started to think of joyce and she was thinking of him too. her son tracked down norwood. the two reconnected on skype. >> we're able to say hello eye to eye. this is a wonderful situation. the only one big problem is i can't take you in my arms and joyce who was now in australia has held on to a picture of norwood all these years. >> and he has said good morning to his photo every day. no word yet if they plan to reconnect in person. but clearly, he wants it to happen. >> that's about -- as sweet a story -- >> right there in his arms. coming up an nfl player at the center of a police investigation. what an oakland raiders' line

this morning, a number of energy an honor for a soldier killed during training, joan rodriguez attended the unveiling of the memorial for her son at a park in paterson. 22-year-old specialist kevin rodriguez died after getting shot in fort campbell in kentucky during a training exercise. >> that means a lot to me to -- to my family. he really -- deserves this. >> rodriguez served in the army exactly two years. he died on the second anniversary of his enlistment. well, new at noon, an nfl player flagged for taunting a police dog. oakland raiders' linebacker ray- ray armstrong number 57 now being investigated to determine if he taunted a k-9 before a game against the steelers at heinz field in pittsburgh. pittsburgh police say armstrong lifted his shirt and barked at the k-9. taunting the police dog is a felony in pennsylvania.

hearing from a runner who received help from a police officer crossing the finish line of a marathon. robert mccoy fell just 200 yards shy of the finish line at the rock and roll half marathon in georgia. we showed the in the feed. sergeant john cane a 27 year veteran sprang into action if you recall. saying he could feel in his heart the runner really wanted to finish. and he did. >> i was like -- i got to get up. i knew i had to get up because i was kind of doing it like i said for my dad. my dad died april 30s of this year and i was trying to get up and get it done. >> the story and the photo of the to crossing the finish line has gone viral. it's something neither the runner or the officer planned. but -- >> had heart and determination and it had -- this next story has determination but in a different king of way. now instead of being flushed with excitement over become engaged. one woman's symbol went down the drain literally. >> she was cleaning some brushes with tissues and she

tossed into the toilet. she flushed and realized her engagement ring was caught in them. yikes. she and her fiance tried pulling the pilot apart to -- toilet apart to find it. when that didn't work they called the utility company and workers set traps on the sewer along the streets. >> oh my goodness. >> i stood there in shook like i wasn't sure -- shock like who flushes a ring down the toilet? >> young lady was actually very rise and reed -- wise and reading online about how not to flush any more water. and helped her out a lot. >> look at that. >> sure did help her. >> it worked. it has a happy ending. workers found the ring after a good cleaning. and i mean a good cleaning. [ laughter ] back on the owner's finger. that's great to see. >> look at that still shiny. >> after that they found the ring was fake. no i'm kidding. [ laughter ] >> that's my ring. >> it wasn't his ring.

temperatures about 50 here at smithtown. 49 brookhaven. so we're looking at low 50s when you go from oyster bay into babylon and about 55. 56 down the jersey shore. so with the 7 to 13-mile an hour wind out of the northwest, to a 17-mile an hour wind here, now, it will be a little breezy and a little chilly but you do see there are some holes in the sky. right there passaic and bergen county, rockland county a little sun here. down the jersey shore, a little sun breaking through. good for you. a couple of sprinkles are here on the north fork and headed towards suffolk county. that will be about another 30 minutes and gone and then we get a little respite from that rain. the afternoon after school will feature clouds and maybe a peek of sun. 59 degrees. it's breezy with those lingering clouds here at noontime. now tomorrow, it's going to be a very windy -- very gosh i should say very cloudy day with a couple of showers, then it's windy as the front moves through and the low goes upstate. so it will be very windy with some 40-mile an hour wind gusts friday. friday afternoon. friday evening and be ready for that. but we will have a lot of sunshine. and a nice fall weekend is bombing up.
