holiday, a lot of people were inside the house when the blast occurred. we want to let you see the house that is still here. you can see it, it's from the second floor down to the first floor. they've brought out stadium lights. looks like it's going to be a long operation out here as they work to try to finally get to the cause of the explosion. >> reporter: the blast rocked an entire neighborhood. this nerval video is from a shop down the street showing the exact moment of the explosion. this is what was left of the house. the homes on each side were knocked off their foundation. >> felt the explosion. my walls cement -- my walls kept caving in. >> we have a blast here and a strong odor of natural gas. >> reporter: all of the victims were on the second floor. officials are trying to

family or was the home illegally divided. >> 16 people is a lot of people in a duplex. it's also a holiday. >> reporter: at least seven homes were damaged with items falling off walls. crews went to check the stability of all of the structures. houses behind the blast were also damaged. >> windows came down and everything. but the house didn't go down, thank god. thank god she's okay. >> you're looking live back here at the scene. you can see the activity taking place right out here. you can see all that rubble and debris that's been pulled out of the house. they've been working to pull that out all afternoon. we did get word they were able to pull two dogs that survived the whole entire blast. they were in the home next door to the home that

dogs were rescued and expected to survive. one man did die, a 24-year-old man who lived in the second floor on the backside of the house where the blast occurred. that is the latest live from elizabeth, new jersey, anthony johnson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> we've got some of our first images of the blast from viewers on twitter showing emergency crews as they arrived on the scene. of course those crews quickly rushing the injured to local hospitals. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer continues our coverage from trinitas hospital. >> several of those victims were brought here, also three members of a family who miraculously escaped. >> just went to sleep and woke up in a nightmare. >> reporter: wayne shepherd had been sleeping when the house right next door suddenly exploded. his wife and 10-month-old son were also in the front of the room. >> she had just taken him out

of his bedroom and his bedroom window is directly across the house that exploded. >> reporter: they were all able to stumble out through the rubble to safety and brought to trinitas regional medical center along with three others. >> being treated as minor trauma at this time. just got out of cat scan so at this point we're still waiting for results. >> reporter: an 8-year-old girl was brought to the hospital. >> she was two or three rooms down, a mirror came off the wall and sfruck her in the back. >> reporter: two of the victims suffered severe burns. because of the large number of victims, 16 in all, dr. john d'angelo came. but wayne shepherd is certainly thankful he and his family made it out alive.

bus but it's -- there were children onboard that bus but it's unclear if any were hurt. a desperate search in brooklyn for a teenager with down syndrome who vanished from his home this morning. police are looking for 15-year-old joshua cruz. we're told he has no history of running away. he was last seen at his home in bushwick. cruz has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old. 38-year-old elliot halberstam arrested yesterday. federal prosecutors say he used e-mail and text messages to lure a 16-year-old in to his hotel room to engage in sexual acts which he allegedly reported. the fbi investigating the possibility that there are other victims. a major deal at the u.n. will allow satellites to track airplanes. the changes motivated following the disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370 last year.

paterson, they'll quickly notice this new monument, a monument unveiled today in memory of kevin rodriguez. he died just a few weeks ago, especially painful to the rodriguez family is not just the fact that their loved one died but also where he died. >> reporter: on this veterans day, grief and sorrow on paterson's hill of heroes. tears flowed from the family of kevin rodriguez as city leaders unveiled a memorial monument to the army specialist and native son. the 22-year-old made the ultimate sacrifice just last month. >> that means a lot to me, to my family. he really deserve it. >> a true soldier who just in two years had earned more than a half dozen medals and commendations having served in afghanistan.

19-year-old suspect. happened in the nassau county hamlet of uniondale. stacey sager is there with the story for us. >> the man who lives here in uniondale wasn't having any of this last night. he fought back, and he fought back hard, even holding down the suspect for a while and that's despite being whacked with a big wooden fraternity paddle. fortunately it all end would an arrest. >> you're not going to steal from my family. you're not going to steal from my community. i did what i had to do. >> reporter: and clearly this homeowner here in union dale was the wrong guy to mess with last night. today 19-year-old keno jamel ramsey has a bruise on his forehead and faces a host of charges after police say he jimmied a basement window, stole some collectibles but then made his way up to this 53-year-old man's bedroom. >> his struggle ensued. defendant ramsey picked

up a large wooden spoon, paddle, and repeatedly began swinging it at the victim. >> reporter: despite his injuries, the victim, who does not want us to use his name, wouldn't allow ramsey to get the best of him. >> i came through the kitchen, drug him through, and told my son call the cops. call the cops. and i held him down. >> reporter: he said it felt like forever, but -- >> the 15-year-old was very, very calm throughout the whole thing. it lasted about 7 minutes. >> my son is a hero. he's a hero. do. >> reporter: and shaken neighbors on this block say they're relieved. >> it was one of maybe a couple break-ins around here so i'm a little concerned but we have a dog, a very big dog. >> others around here say they have a lot of surveillance cameras at their homes. there is concern in this neighborhood that the suspect, mr. ramsey, was here the last couple of weeks, potentially scouting out

homes that he could burglarize. right now he is facing a host of charges. among them, burglary, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. he's being held on $150,000 bail. live in union dale, stacey sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. still no idea tonight as to what caused a small business jet to smash in to a house in ohio. police confirmed the pilot, co-pilot, and seven employees from a florida real estate company died. the charters flight from dayton to akron crashed in to a ball of flames less than two miles from the airport. the ntsb has recovered the cockpit voice recorder and it is reviewing new video showing the plane just seconds before the crash. >> the left wing hit the ground first and left a witness mark. then the aircraft hit half of an apartment building destroying it before running up an behind the building and coming to rest. >> no one on the ground was hurt but about a dozen families

a strong storm system has dumped about a foot of snow in the rockies. that storm leaving about 5 inches in the denver area and a number of roads and highways buried with that the blizzard-like conditions prompting the denver international airport to cancel dozens of flights. the system is now barreling east, threatening the planes with wintery weather, tornados in the west. lee is nodding his head. >> there are tornado warnings this evening in iowa, more snow going through the plains. a piece of the system comes our way but not that particular piece. outside we go where we have the empire state building in red, white, and blue, and of course a huge thank you to our veterans today. least we could do to have the empire state building in the appropriate colors. at least we dry it out a little bit for the veterans day parade. a little on the chilly side. the winds got lighter and the temperatures

likely late morning in to the early evening hours is our window for light rainfall. you see the showers just left the twin forks. clouds are trying to thin out. low cloudiness east of the city. there's our low pressure starting to move away. a little area of high pressure is going to bring us this dry window through tomorrow morning but notice how the clouds are already invading that fair weather high. there's the storm that brought the snow to denver. eastern side, classic looking squall line with thunderstorms, potential tornados. but that part of the storm lifting in to the lakes and eastern canada. we get the leftovers here. this little strip of broken showers, that's going to swing through the day tomorrow with light rain. partly to mostly cloudy skies, 50. rain arriving. could catch part of the tail end of the morning commute. if you want to miss the rainfall, leave earlier. maybe .1 or quarter of an inch at most. here's what we're working on for 5:30. will

new at 5:00, new york police are investigating whether the death of a former knicks basketball draft pick was a criminal act or suicide. 35-year-old michael wright found dead inside his suv on east 16th street yesterday in flatbush, brooklyn. an autopsy will confirm the cause of death but he did have a wound on his head. he had been reported missing sunday night by a family friend. he was drafted by the knicks in 2001 but never made the roster. in brooklyn a $2500 reward available tonight in a shocking animal cruelty case. police say this deposit was found in a parking lot near 80 east 93rd street. the dog was examined and found to be dehydrated and malnourished. police are hoping someone could tell them who is responsible for mistreating the animal. police trying to catch a pair of serial burglars. one of them was captured on surveillance video. this shows

this is not the first time he's been arrested for something like this. he has an extensive record of transit-related arrests. in fact, nearly 30. everything from posing as a subway operator to swiping and driving a trailways bus. this is video from the summer of 2010 when he was charged with impersonating a federal agent. police say he flashed a fake shield and forged i.d. when he boarded a train at penn station. when he was just 15 he managed to drive a train load of passengers from 34th street to the world trade center. he has a history of transit-related arrests. darius mccullum is being held at a police precinct in brooklyn. during questioning sources are telling us he indicated he wanted to steal a plane. so far mccullum has not been charged. >> what a story. sandra bookman in the

late morning we see our first raindrops. planner, hovering around 50 for much of the night. rain arriving during the morning hours. i have a couple drops posted 8 a.m. but there's a better threat of more widespread. comes in late morning and lasts through the early evening hours. staying cloudy and still above average, upper 50s to around 60 degrees. then the clouds will start to break up in the evening hours. just in time for the big game. bills and jets, 54 degrees, southwest wind 7 to 15. futurecast shows a couple breaks. clouds thickening back up. there's the first little skinny line of showers that might sneak in to the morning commute. it's not a big deal and fairly light. more widespread showers likely to break out. then pull out during the evening commute. rainfall amounts are going to be fairly light. we'll clear out tomorrow evening. the amounts probably quarter of an inch or less. winding down late in the day. once that storm gets off to our north and east, gusty winds behind it.

theft of a greyhound bus. sandra bookman in the news room. >> it has apparently happened again. investigators say darius mccullum stole a greyhound bus and is in custody at this hour. he's been arrested nearly 30 times in the past. take a look at this video from the summer of 2010. that's when mccollum was arrest d was-- arrested. he flashed a fake i.d. when he was just 15,mccollum managed to drive a train load of passengers to the world trade center. darius mccollum is being held at the 78th police precinct in prospect heights, brooklyn. he was arrested today. during questioning we're being told he
