obviously made him believe that they were police officers pulling him over. and at some point the bogus stop escalated into a struggle between the postal worker and the culprits. shots were fired and the worker was shot in the hand. he was taken to university hospital where he was treated and released. he will recover. and investigators from the prosecutor's office in essex county were on the scene looking for evidence and one suv was towed away. investigators and police obviously trying to track down these guys as quickly as possible because anybody who can convince a driver that they are police officers and pull them over, that could escalate into even a deadly encounter. so at this point, we are trying to get more information from newark police and the essex county prosecutor's office. we will pass it along to you when we have more information. for now here live in newark, toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. also in awe income a police officer -- newark a police officer opened fire on a suspected during an alemmed armed rob i. the officer interrupted a robbery at a gas station during the overnight

hours. one suspect was hit in the chest and is hospitalized. another was arrested on the streets. the officer came. he didn't come because the robber was here. you know, he came to buy something. and finally, my one of my co- workers informed him that the robber was inside. >> the officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution. we have just learned the identity of the man killed in a house explosion in new jersey. 24-year-old finny brown lived on the second floor of the home on magnolia avenue in elizabeth close to where the blast originated. more than a dozen others were hurt including an 11-year-old bill in critical condition. -- boy in critical condition. although the investigation is still ongoing. >> we're not really going to know until we get to the stove and the gas connections. if they were tampered with. or any other malfunction.

afghanistan. new complaints about a minnesota dentist who came under fire this year for killing cecil the lion. the minnesota department of natural resources has launched the investigation against walter palmer on claims he used illegal tactics during the current deer hunting season. his neighbors told officials they saw a pickup driving on palmer's lands preventing deer from leaving the property. police in indianapolis have no suspects in the murder of the pregnant wife of a local pastor. investigators say amanda blackburn was shot in the head while trying to defend herself against a home invasion tuesday morning. her son was home at the time but was not hurt. she and her husband were dedicated to the church. >> they came here from north carolina and they were on fire for the lord. they had a -- for indy campaign that you know, they just finished up. it's hard. >> adding to the pain for the congregation, blackburn was 12

weeks pregnant. her husband released a statement saying he lost his ministry partner and his very best friend. a florida man is safe and in stitches after a surprise alligator attack. >> my husband got bit by an alligator. >> now tell my exactly what happened with your husband? >> he was at thened of our drive -- end of our drive. weeding a planter. and then the alligator came up out of the water and bit him in the arm. >> 68-year-old bill bashir was attacked at his home. he says it happened so fast he never even saw the alligator that bit him. >> he could have just dragged me into the water. >> hao ad how'd you -- how'd you get him off again? >> that alligator had to jump at least two feet to get him. >> wildlife officers caught a seven foot alligator they believe is the one that attacked bashir.

well, a neighbor surprised his burglars and an nba player arrested for skipping tolls. just some of the stories that were caught on camera and caught our attention. going to begin in las vegas where burglars took a gamble on the wrong house. a neighbor knew something was wrong when he saw a strange suv with four men parked across the street. when he cop fronted them they made a break for the vehicle. aftertaking a moment to find the keys they sped away. the homeowners are thankful their neighbor videotaped the entire encounter, they would have been cleaned out if this hadn't happened. >> everything in the bedroom. tall drawers had been taken out and they must have seen him. and everything they had at the front door to take. they didn't take. they just ran out of the house. >> yeah, well those thieves are on the run.

but police are hoping that they will be caught quickly thanks to the clear images captured on this video here. a north carolina man had his phone at the ready to capture dramatic kid owe of a road rage incident. the footage shows two suvs apparently trying to cut each other off in traffic. you can see the white blazer and the black lexus suv driving around each other aggressively and occasionally slamming the brakes. eventually both suvs spin out of control. both drivers now face reckless driving charges. and captured on police dashcam, an nba player's traffic trouble lands him in handcuffs. officers in texas pulled over patrick beverly of the houston rockets yesterday for speeding in a school zone. they arrested him after finding out his registration was not up- to-date and he didn't have a license and he owed hundreds of dollars the toll fees. -- in toll fees. he was released after he paid the overdue tolls and out of jail in enough time to play in

new information about the man accused of killing an nypd officer. >> the suspect tyrone howard appearing in court just a little while ago on drug charges. and the judge in the case blasted mayor de blasio during the hearing. >> eyewitness news reporter darla miles is live in lower manhattan with new information. darla? >> reporter: well, shirleen, judge nunez continued to defend her position to sign off on that drug diversion program. and she also said that mayor de blasio began a false negative that he got the case of the facts rather of her case completely wrong. and then she went on to sentence tyrone howard to the maximum in that judge case. first the sentencing you can see howard was in court today. he was -- walking with cane. he got 12 years and that 2014 drug indictment with 18 other defendants. he would not have served any time in that case if he had completed the drug diversion program that has now come under

fire since the shooting death of nypd officer randolph holder, the judge nunez says the mayor began a false narrative about howard saying the defendant was out on the streets because he made the $35,000 bail. his girlfriend put up the $3,500 and that was the reason he was out on the street. she said shame on the politickings for pointing their fingers at judges for a program they wanted. and that's when after the case, after the sentencing, howard's defense attorney said that the high-profile murder case is having a negative effect on his client's drug case. >> i think it would have been more appropriate had she adjourned the case to the atmosphere of the imposition the sentence would have been clearer and have been less volatile. her -- response from the bench was appropriate. judges can't talk generally to the press. and this is the one forum and she did -- was extremely treat -- treated extremely unfairly by the press. she didn't release him.

efforts are generating conversation and concern. organizers are illustrating oppress -- a pressing social problem. advocates say the efforts are more harassment than help. right now there are more than 57,000 homeless people in new york city shelters and that's a 13% increase from two years ago. 37 additional subway stations in new york city are getting access to wi-fi. today transit officials and executives from several wireless companies announced the latest phase of wi-fi in cell phone service at new york city subway stations by the end of the year, nearly 8 # stations will have -- 08 stations will have -- 80 stations will have service. the proposal by the federal government will be announced later today. it would affect nearly one million households. the impact will be strong here in new york city, the city has the largest public housing system in the country. in illinois a man will receive a massive settlement after he was hurt on a cruise ship. even though the video may not

seem like it was much of an accident. a federal jury awarded james houseman you see right here $21.5 million in damages after he was hurt by that sliding door. the 61-year-old says he suffered concussion after the incident and holland america's ms amsterdam. his attorney says this is one of other possibly sliding door injuries aboard the ships. >> 34 other incidents of sliding automatic doors hitting passengers. >> he has memory problems. he has seizures now. >> well, you can see what it did there. may not seem like a lot. but again, he's saying it did. the cruise line says it will appeal the federal jury's excessive. the vatican is putting the finishing touches on pope francis' planned visit to mexico. an official in mexico says the pope will visit mexico city and at least three additional places. each stop will allow the pontiff to address the issues important to him like poverty and immigration. the trip is expected to take place in mid-february.
