are begin with that breaking news, the targeting of one of the most despised figures on the planet. >> we're talking about isis terrorist jihadi john believed to have been killed in a u.s. drone strike. his real name, mohamed emwazi, a masked executioner seen on video beheading hostages. the cia has been tracking emwazi for for than a year. >> killed in a drone strike in raqqah and although the pentagon has not confirmed his death sources tell abc news it was a 100% direct hit, abc's brian ross has been tracking the story overnight. >> reporter: the world first came to know jihadi john a little over a year ago when he appeared in this video wearing a black mask holding a knife and threatening the life of american journalist james foley. his voice was disguised but he could not hide his british accent. >> you have plotted against us and gone far out of your way to find reasons to interfere in our affairs. >> reporter: one after near he

american james foley. foley's family has been highly critical of the administration's efforts to rescue hostages. abc news investigative producer from our brian ross unit james overnight. >> it was very small solace to learn that jihad john had been killed in an air strike and she said the government just doesn't get it. you know, essentially doesn't bring their son back. that was their point and they are -- i don't think they'll miss jihad john but preferred to have gotten jim back a. >> u.s. officials have been tracking him for several months thousand after identified as a british citizen in february. >> abc's stephanie ramos is live in washington. stephanie, will the u.s. ever have 100% confirmation that he's dead and how will they try to confirm it? >> reporter: well, reena, u.s. officials say this morning they presume jihadi john was killed by that u.s. drone strike based on what they observed in the hit

and say his car was struck and it virtually burst into flames. they may never have 100% confirmation but they can come close by listening to the chatter of isis operatives and social media. >> okay, so clearly he is a high value target but could this be a turning point in the fight against isis? >> reporter: well, it will certainly give isis leaders pause about how effective the u.s. was in tracking this top target. now, here's a big question. could the u.s. be after other top targets? well, richard clarke, a former counterterrorism adviser to the white house and current abc news consultant says this might be a sign the tide is turning. a big blow to the terror group when its propaganda figure is killed. kendis and reena, back to you. >> stephanie ramos reporting from washington for us on this, thank you. also breaking right now, we're just learning another blow to isis. >> in iraq, kurdish forces have retaken the strategic city of sinjar which had been in isis control while kurds were

fighting on the ground. the u.s. led calista wassing itting them with air strikes. the key supply route runs through sinjar. >> isis may have extended its reach now into lebanon with a deadly attack, the group claiming responsibility for twin suicide bombings in beirut that killed at least 43 people. that death toll expected to rise. until now isis had not had a recognized affiliation in lebanon but its forces are fighting in neighboring syria as well as iraq. back here at home we'll switch gears to the race for the white house which is heating up as donald trump steps up his attacks. >> trump had harsh words for campus protesters and the university of missouri administrators who stepped down and his fellow candidates were also in the crosshairs. it's "your voice, your vote." here's abc's jonathan karl. this morning, donald trump unplugged. >> i'm telling carly whatever the hell her name is fiorina i'm saying, will you stop cutting in? kasich, oh, i have a headache from this guy.

police in northern california pulled over this car because it was going too slow. turns out it was one of google's driverless cars programmed to travel below 25 miles an hour for safety reasons, police did not issue a ticket but warned google its car was backing up traffic. and there is a new embarrassment for the u.s. secret service. uniformed agent lee robert moore has been arrested for sexting someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. the recipient was actually an undercover detective. some of the communication took place while moore was on duty at the white house. he is also accused of trying to arrange a meeting with the girl. your next buick suv may be made in china.
