suicide bombings striking at a soccer match. diners murdered at a restaurant. and gunmen storming a concert hall taking hundreds hostage. tonight, more than 100 people are dead in what appears to be terror attacks. the violence there bringing increased security here. president obama vows to find the terrorists who did this. >> this is an attack not just on paris but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values we share. >> a night of anger and a lot good evening. >> the attackers all believed to be dead. the question tonight who are they and how many innocent people did they kill. the death toll expected to be well over 120 at several sites in paris.

>> here in new york no specific threats but heightened security at potential terrorist targets. the spire of the world trade center tonight lit up in the colors of the french flag to pay tribute to the victims. >> we have team coverage too cover every side of this story. >> reporter: the president of france mobilized the military and ordered that all business, all restaurants, all stores would simply shut down for the weekend after this coordinated masker in the french capital but right now they're still counting the tonight they shut off the lights at the eifell tower, the universal symbol of quality, equality, freedom now dark. as the president spoke to the nation. >> faced with this fear as a nation that defends itself and

again will be able to overcome the terrorists. >> reporter: hollange was in the stands cheering the french soccer team when an explosion outside interrupted the game and shook the country to its core. simultaneously terrorists went into a theater during a show. gunmen stormed two different restaurants not far away. killing even more. >> i saw a woman next to me. i was holding her actually and i said, are you okay, are you okay. when i lifted my head. she was okay. i could see a pool of blood around her and she had been shot i think in the chest and was winded. >> when i went in the street i saw 20 to 25 bodies lying on the floor. >> reporter: jihadist on

twitter immediately praised the coordinated carnage they've declared war on france on their role against isis. today's attack after the attack on charlie hebdo and the jewish market. >> we're going to do everything we can to work with the french people and nations around the world to bring these terrorists to justice and to go after any terrorist networks that go after our people. >> it is now 5:00 in the morning in paris. that city waking up to a living nightmare. now reporting eight militants were killed seven of whom detonated suicide vests. many of them in the music venue where a band from california had been playing. that is a concert you would expect would attract americans. at this time no word how many americans found themselves in the midst of terror.

the attacks spurred increased security here at home at the french consulate. flags now flying at half staff. mayor deblasio tweeting tonight we stand in solidarity with the people of france. mayor cuomo tweeting out messages of support from all new yorkers. >> reporter: one woman brought up a bouquet of red roses and left them here outside the consulate door then crossed herself three times as she left. all night flowers, candles and cards have been left here gestures that show new yorkers are mourning too. >> with a salute to liberty, equality people showed up to pay tribute.

>> me and my friend keep talking about retiring there. >> reporter: the memorial outside the french consulate on fifth avenue began with three yellow roses left by this brokenhearted new yorker. >> i just wanted the french people to know that solidarity with them. >> reporter: with the flags lowered and tied at the bottom with condolences continuing to build throughout the night, the site was somber. >> we cannot cut back, we cannot remain. we have to remain vigilant. this was a dastardly act. >> reporter: well clearly the city does not have the luxury of ever relaxing its vigilance, this as new yorkers react with shared, heart ache, condolences and prayers. we're live outside the french consulate on the upper east side i'm lucy yang for channel seven eyewitness news. >> lucy thank you.

can't describe the paralyzing feeling of getting off an international flight and learning a massacre like this happened back home. one man says his family lives a short distance from the parisian theater where people were taken hostage. no announcement was made during their flight so they learned about the attacks means. which made the long flight everyone longer as their thoughts were with their loved ones back home. to the theater. i have nothing right now. >> how is your family. have you talked with them. >> it's right next door. i don't know if somebody didn't report yet if something happened or not. >> people were just finding out as they were getting off the plane. people are very shaken up. >> reporter: and in a statement officials with the faa say they are working closely with their

live tonight at jfd, i'm a.j. ross, channel 7 news. >> thank you. well the stepped up security here at home now widening beyond the french consulate. the counter terrorism unit now spread across the city. there's added security at bridges, tunnels and at the world trade center. darla mile miles is in union square where there's been a long rally. >> this started out as a rally involving french exchange students it's now become a silent and somber candlelight vigil here. where everyone who wants to pay their respects for those who died that paris can come and do so. and out here an increased police presence. >> today? really. >> reporter: right now. >> you're kidding? >> i didn't know. >> reporter: so far away from

home, and their family and friends are all there. these two french tourists stood in the cross roads of the world friday night, helpless and horrified. it was in time square where security is always tight, they first read the grizzly details of the paris attacks and watched this video of the soccer match where an explosion can be heard. >> are you serious? i'm afraid, i don't know how to react but i'm afraid of going back there. >> reporter: though the nypd says there's nothing to fear at nyc with no creditable threat to the city. but nypd command resources well as a critical respond group and critical teams have been dispatched to crowded areas around the city out of an abundance of caution says a statement.

>> key locations, key events, we have the ability to respond very quickly. the fact is we have officers ready to deploy very quickly again with sufficient training to address it. >> reporter: at the mta station extra officers both at the penn station and grand central station. >> i know it's totally tragic but i have faith in police and whatever safety measures they're taking. >> reporter: now the fbi and new york state police say they are also watching these attacks and the developments in the investigation very closely. again no creditable threat to the nyc. but they're going to increase their presence at large gathering. i have spoken with friends who are in paris working right now. they're telling me through text messages that they are staying in their offices all day.

to leave until this investigation concludes. darla miles, channel 7. >> shelter in place is the operative word there. joining us now, chief of the department james o'neil and chief i suspect that paris police department yesterday if the city was going to be safe from terror threats they would have said yes how safe is new york city right now. >> right now new york city is very safe. this is what we train for and this is what we do. we cently -- recently we stood up a number of units to active shooters. we now have the critical we responds command. we also have the strategic response group. it's a city wide task group of 800 people. we have the people. we have the resources we have the training and we have the will. >> which really leads me to the next question, the attackers targeted soft targets. pretty easy to orchestrate. here it's not a matter of if these attacks are going to happen but when. how ready are we? >> we are ready.

people who are on patrol every day and the various units around the police department. we have 1,600 people dedicated to just this sort of event. this is what we train for. >> we see news shows reports every night on this newscast, about crimes on the streets of new york city. this parallel universe that you all live in. street crime, keeping crime safe for the citizens and counter terrorism. >> there's many things that keep me up at night. the crime being a prime one in new york city. homicides and shootings but an attack such as this, this does keep me up at night but i do, i am able to sleep because we and the strategic response group and we have the right people in the new york city police department. so we are ready. >> you were talking about the individuals. more than 800. >> each and every one of them

is it isis or is it al-qaida. >> there's the competition between the two terrorist groups. jim hoffer has more. >> reporter: if this is isis launching an attack from the middle east or an isis inspired home grown attack, either way it would mark the terrorists group eclipsing of al-qaida. it would also confirm counter terrorism officials worse fears about outgrowing reach and sophistication of this young terrorist group. the simultaneous coordinated attack are al-qaida trademarks but this also has some of the signature markings of isis. military weapons and smaller scale targets. >> this is not just about attacking political institutions or iconic buildings. this is also about attacking civilians where they live and where they enjoy themselves. >> reporter: while there's been no immediate claim of responsibility for these attacks, early speculation is that there probably is some kind of isis link.

january's attack on the political newspaper hebdo is believed to have tied to isis. this time the attacks are more coordinated, showing terrorist training for weeks if not months. that it went undetected is a huge blow for counter terrorism efforts everywhere. >> how they got these weapons, how they got these bombs, how are they communicating between cells. low the communication wasn't intercepted. how come these people weren't on some radar screen. >> reporter: just weeks ago, they sounded an alarm about the growing influenceover isis in radicalizing terror not only abroad but here at home. the report warning quote the unprecedented speed of which americans are being radicalized by violent extremists is straining federal law enforcements ability to monitor and intercept isis.

11:20, people hurt tonight. six of them critically when a tour bus crashed in san francisco. about 30 people were on that double decker open air bus. hit a bicyclists and two pedestrians then collided with several over vehicles before it crashed into a construction area. several workers fell from scaffolding. new jersey accused of squatting in the home of a u.s. soldier then destroying it. police in inglewood discovered that a man was living in a vacant home near by. the conditions of the home were disgusting. police say surveillance video recorded 23-year-old derek patton as he lunged at a

clerk and slashed the worker across the face. cops said the attack happened without warning or without provocation. the victim was rushed to the hospital. he received 80 stitches. a man is being held on $250,000 tonight for allegedly molesting a 4-year-old child at worked. 23-year-old isaac nelson mcknight is accused of inappropriately touching the child. he was arrested after the staff at andros learning center called police. mcknight only worked there for about two weeks. he has been fired. fantasy football fans are fighting back. protesting for their right to gamble online.
