6:10 pm
france is lashing out at the islamic state group days after they claim responsibility for the deadly attacks. >> joining us now, senator charles schumer. did it come with any input, intel, assistance from u.s. authorities? >> first, u.s. and french intelligence is working together very closely so our intelligence is the best in the world. i'm sure we shared some of it with them. the french did the right thing. what scares isis the most is our intelligence were able to figure out where their leadership goes, then our drones and planes that are able to take them out. and i recommend that the united states do more of this too. we had great success in basically degrading and almost eliminating al qaeda with this same combination of intelligence, reconnaissance, drones. even though we had no troops because they had fled in to pakistan. troops on the ground, which some have asked
6:11 pm
they want a long war of the west versus their forces and that would go on and on but they can't do very much when we use our drones. they're more skilled than ever and if within a shorter period of time, and we should up this, we can wipe out most of their leadership. they will be much, much less potent and unable to do the kind of terrible thing they did. >> one of the questions coming up, since friday's attacks, is one, why we didn't know or at least have some early warning about what was going on there. but there's also talk today about the real concerns that perhaps isis is communicating using encrypted messages which may be impossible for us. >> that is a real fear. up to now our intelligence has been very good at tracking the relatively small number of isis people who were with isis who are now in the country. it's not a huge amount like the french. we don't have people who just cross the borders and come in and say i'm here.
6:12 pm
if we didn't find out because the messages were encrypted, that's going to be very, very serious. i don't know if that's the case. the fbi and counterintelligence people i speak to don't believer that's the case but it could be. if it is, then we have to do much more. >> very quickly, the attacks in paris, but arrests in belgium. >> the eu, if you cross the border of the whole eu, you can then without being check go to the terrorists find the states that are the least strong in checking up on the monitoring, et cetera. that's why you've seen even with charlie hebdo they arrested people in belgium. chain is as strong as its weakest link. i'm sure there's going pressure on other countries to tighten up. >> senator charles schumer. thank you. nice to see you. >> next under better circumstances.
