determine how it happened. the bus driver remained at the scene. long time neighborhood residents told us this is not the first time a person has been hit by a vehicle on this corner. >> five years ago the same thing happened again. that same thing happened. >> several instances where people have gotten hit by cars and not made it on this block. >> reporter: there have also been three cases of mta buses hitting pedestrians across the city in just the last month. including a deadly incident in brooklyn that claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman. bus driver paul roper was charged, accused of leaving the scene. that bus also making a left turn as the pedestrian crossed the street. today the transit workers union questioning. >> there is a blind spot. if you can

look at this bus right here and you stand here and this is the bus where the accident happened. you can see, you cannot see the operator. almost like the tractor-trailers. they say if you can't see me, i can't see you. >> the transit union tonight also would like a rush on technology that would vocally warn pedestrians as a bus is either turning or nearing a pedestrian crossing. the driver of this bus stayed on the scene, talks to investigators. again filed. although the nypd is still investigating. we're live tonight on the lower east side of manhattan, sandra bookman, channel 7 eyewitness news. police believe carbon monoxide is to blame for the deaths of two men found inside a westchester county home. a concerned family member found the men in separate bedrooms around noon today. police believe fumes from a car left running in a closed garage drifted in to the house then suffocated the men. victims are

an 85-year-old man and his 50-year-old step grandson. both lived in the home on maywood avenue. now to the weather, the mild fall we've had so far taking a brief timeout tonight. freeze warnings in the tri-state tonight. as meteorologist lee goldberg told us when he briefed us during his afternoon meeting, we're right on schedule. lee is outside the studios tonight bundled up. >> november 22nd is when we should have our temperatures. don't worry about it. the cold is throwing everybody off tonight. we should have temperatures around the freezing mark november 22nd and that's where we're headed tonight on november 23rd. our numbers really cold this evening compared to where we've been. this is really the first time it's feeling like this. 38 degrees at 6:00. a northwest wind at 29 miles per hour. so your feels like reading is at 33 at 6:00 and only going lower this evening. these are actual

temperatures, mid 30s across the five boroughs and the wind chills are working in the upper basically spots. freeze warning is for city. you've already seen temperatures at or below freezing. for much of new york city, a freeze warning. the flurries we saw across northwest new jersey have diminished. here's the futurecast. by tomorrow morning, look at the widespread 20s in the suburbs. 31 islip and 30 in belmar. just looking back over the past several years, you've got a range from early november to mid december for the first freeze and the average being the 22nd. pretty much right on target. when you go through a fall that's one of the warmest on record, and november is going to blow the other novembers off the charts, it's something we're not used to and that's why it's cold. bundle up. we'll tell you about the that go warmup. accuweather coming back in a couple minutes. now to that water main break. residents in hoboken getting the bad news today.

they may not get their water restored until after thanksgiving. it all started with a water maichb break -- a the problem failed. lose lieu -- lucy yang with the latest. >> it's basically bad news and more bad news for hoboken residents. city officials fear these water woes will continue in to thanksgiving and beyond because given where the breaks occurred, it's just not an easy fix. >> i saw a lot of people come together during sandy when people didn't have power or hot water or anything. >> reporter: hoboken residents are determined to make the most of thanksgiving even if they don't have water to cook or clean. >> the timeframe for full restoration could potentially be after the thanksgiving holiday. we'll know more within the next 24 hours when they're able to get in and make the repairs. >> reporter: so how did this vibrant city end up with flooded

streets and dry faucets? on sunday an old water main broke. the suez water company came in to begin repairs with assurances of a speedy return to normal. except overnight an even larger main, a 36-inch pipe, broke as well, with the valve set on the on position. translation, rivers of water are pouring out in to the streets instead of in to all the homes. >> until we have inserted a line stop in to that 36-inch main which is a very unique piece of equipment, until that water in that 36 main is shut off, we will not be able to access the vault. >> reporter: until then water trucks throughout town will continue to hand out free water. bring your own containers. if you're one of the lucky ones who have water at home, please use sparingly. no matter what, boil the water before drinking. >> the boil water is purely precautionary.

called charged a fourth person in connection with the attacks, attacks that killed 130 people in paris. police in paris are examining an explosive vest without a detonator that was found today in a pile of rubble. the device found in the same neighborhood where a cell phone belonging to salah abdelslam was detected the day of the attack. prime minister of britain visited the concert hall where dozens were killed. the hauled -- the hard reality in our area is heightened security throughout the tri-state. tonight a new app from the governor of new york encouraging folks to report suspicious activity. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer talking to the local head of the fbi. tim is in herald square for us tonight. >> you're going to see it if you haven't already, the added

square, times square, other major spots. there's so much that goes on behind the scenes. >> reporter: an active shooter scenario. police moving in to a dangerous subway situation. a drill this time but part of the new offensive to defend against terrorism. >> we're much stronger, smarter working together and that includes the public. >> reporter: i sat down with diego rodriguez, the fbi's assistant director in charge of the new york field office who spoke of security in place here. with several major upcoming holiday events attracting very large crowds, he believes the city is safe. security has been increased at many high profile and soft target sites in the city following the recent attacks in paris. >> we stay on our game. we can never let our guard down. communicating via internet. they can ramp up pretty quickly. >> reporter: one of his continuing concerns though are these new messaging apps on smart phones. because they're

harder for the fbi to monitor suspicious activity. >> do you have any idea how much traffic might be going on? >> that's the problem. we don't know at this extent in time what exactly it is that we're missing. >> reporter: they're now in discussions with technology companies. >> in order to find a way we can both work together and defeat this type of threat. >> reporter: on the other hand a new effort to fight terrorism was unveiled today by new york state officials with this public service announcement in which this van was filled with suspicious material and a claim that it took four days for people to notice. >> that's four days too long. >> reporter: you can now download a new mobile app to be able to report suspicious activity. >> see something, send something. a new way to help fight terrorism. >> you do a screen on the information you receive. and the people who are receiving the information are trained professionals in this area. basically what you're asking for is an anonymous tip.

new at 6:00, a serial armed robber on the loose in long island and tonight a whole lot of worry for businesses and their customers. >> the suspect holding up stores, mostly women's clothing shops and tying up his victims in suffolk and nassau counties. >> here's michelle charlesworth. >> reporter: this is the only picture police have to go on. the pier 1 robbery happened around 7:00 sunday night. four people were handcuffed in plastic zip ties in the back of the store. >> my wife and my daughter shop, your wife and your daughter shop. >> reporter: police say most of these 11 robberies have happened at women's clothing stores or places where women work and shop. avenue, rainbow, new york and company, destination maternity, pier 1, joyce leslie, and dress barn were some of the stores hit. >> it started out as a retail establishment. started out as a petco and dollar tree. the suspect goes in to stores where he thinks females are working. we think that could have something to do with it. >> police say one of the most

case is the fact they do not have a clear picture of the gunman to show the public. either these national chain stores don't have surveillance cameras or as was the case at pier 1 last night, the recording device was removed by the gunman. >> there was a video system. the d vrks -- the dvr was removed from the store. >> reporter: at one of the stores there was a conspicuous security guard in front of the front door. many stores have taken measures to increase security since they were robbed. michelle charlesworth, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> beware. a lot of fear out there. before we go to break i want to say the state department has just issued a worldwide alert for american tourists to be on guard because of terrorist threats and alerts. this is worldwide. obviously americans are usually on alert. but this reactivated by the state department mostly ago. just ahead on eyewitness news, lee returns with a freeze

following some breaking news right now. there's been a deadly accident that's happening in yonkers and westchester county. shannon sohn is over news copper 7 with the latest. what do we know about this? >> just a terrible accident. two people in critical condition. they've all been taken to westchester medical center. all of this happening you can see the flashing lights. you can see the police tape up here. this accident happened at 4:30 this afternoon. we're going to bring the camera shot down a little bit so you can see there is more police activity further south. they're doing an investigation to see exactly what caused this accident to happen. in the meantime werberten avenue going to be
