say joseph first lit this car on fire. they say he threw it through that window, asleep in that bedroom his ex-girlfriend's 13-year-old sister. >> reporter: the family who lives here is lucky they made it out alive. police say joseph ferrufino threw a molotov cock till through the home around 6:00 this morning. they say he lit a car in the driveway on fire. >> during this morning's incident, a 13-year-old female received a laceration to her foot from broken glass and her mother sustained smoke inhalation and first degree burns to her legs. >> reporter: the family returned to the home this afternoon to gather what ever they could salvage which isn't much. the house is a complete loss. police say this wasn't ferrufino's first attempt.

they say exactly a week ago ferrufino tried to launch this molotov cocktail through the home's front bay window. instead it fell to the ground and didn't ignite. >> the homeowner did face the defendant but was not able to identify him at the time. police were called after an intense search of the area. they were not able to locate the defendant. >> reporter: this the girl's father chased after ferrufino as he fled the scene and was able to give police a description of him. >> after a foot pursuit officers apprehended the defendant on west call avenue. >> police say after that november 17th incident, they installed inside the family's home a sort of panic alarm which would allow the family to press an alarm and that call would go right to 911. that's what they had to do here this morning. ferrufino is facing arson charges but those charges could be upgraded because the home was occupied at the time. live in baldwin, kristin thorne, channel

7 eyewitness news. tyrone howard, the career criminal accused of gunning down a new york city police detective indicted tonight on murder charges. the 30-year-old is accused of shooting detective randolph holder in east harlem last month. he pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, second degree murder, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. tonight we've learned the victim of a deadly crash in westchester was a woman who worked with severely disabled children. police say 46-year-old charlene. both tairmgz are in critical condition -- both teenagers are in critical condition tonight. the boil water advisory from this weekend's water main break has been lifted. the city is now receiving water from the weekawken transmission line. hoboken's mayor don zimmer says

most residents have water but people living on higher floors in high rise buildings may still experience water issues. nearly all businesses are opening up again. as millions of people get ready to head out for the thanksgiving holiday weekend, the state department is reminding travelers to avoid large crowds or saying authorities believe the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as members of isis return from syria and iraq. the tsa says it's beefing up security and is up to the challenge. officials say the u.s. has the safest aviation security system in the world. if you are flying over the next few days, the tsa and airlines recommend leaving early for the airport in order to deal with the extra security. new details about the the paris prosecutor now says there eight. he says the suspected ring leader and an unidentified man found dead were planning an

an international arrest warrant has been issued for muhammad abrini. he was filmed at a gas station with salah abdeslam. two other people are under arrest for suspicion of participating in a terrorist group. still more overseas. growing trouble between russia and turkey after a russian war plane was shot down at the turkish-syrian border. things only got worse when russia went in to rescue the two pilots. joe torres is in the news room with the latest. >> that turkish military response could lead to a crisis between the turkey claims it shot down the russian jet after it flew in to turkish air space and they say they provided warnings to the russian jet and they have proof of the aerospace violation. russian president vladimir putin warns of serious consequences. >> reporter: a russian marine killed while searching for the two russian pilots who ejected

from their fighter jet. a fighter jet shot down by turkey. that according to russian military officials who now vow to destroy anyone threatening their air forces. vladimir putin calls the shootdown a stab in the back by the accomplices of terrorists, blasting turkey, a fellow nato member. they called an emergency meeting. >> the information we have from other allies is consistent with what we've got from turkey. >> reporter: turkey maintains its air force brought down the russian jet only after repeated warnings were ignored, claiming the russian pilots were told 10 times in a 5-minute span they were violating turkish air space. >> we were able to hear everything that was going on. >> reporter: president obama, who today hosted a white house meeting with french president francois hollande says he expects to communicate with the turkish president in the next few days.

he was support to al qaeda. he was also accused of being part of a terror cell that planned to blow up a shopping center in manchester, england. a man whose canoe capsized in new jersey has been found. he was discovered today after a two-day search. the victim's name is not being released at this time. police first received reports of the capsized canoe at around 3 a.m. sunday. the 26-year-old man was rescued. he was treated at a hospital and released. update for a story we told you about last night at 5:00. a man wanted for a string of attacks on women in the bronx has surrendered. the nypd says roberto has confessed to stealing three women's purses in the south bronx this month. all of the victims at least 64 years old. one was threatened with a knife. the other two had some

a chicago police officer is in jail charged with murder in the deadly shooting of a black teenager. today a judge denied bond for officer jason van dyke. he was accused of killing october 2014. the public will soon get its first look at what happened. dashcam video of the shooting could be released as early as today. in minneapolis police have arrested a second man in the shootings of five black lives matter protesters. they were shot last night outside a police precinct where they were protesting a police involved shooting. none suffered life-threatening injuries. they're protesting the death of 24-year-old jamar clark who was shot while interacting with two officers. still ahead, only eyewitness news is there as investigators descend on a medical clinic in east harlem. we'll show you how our investigation laid the groundwork for today's raid. >> a fatal fire but others still needed to be rescued. hear from firefighters who ran in to an adult home to save

first responders talking to us tonight about rescuing residents at an adult group home in new jersey. that home caught fire early this morning. two people were killed in the blaze. it happened in fairlawn. new jersey reporter toni yates is

>> we learned at that police press conference one of the women in the house was actually able to dial 911. she was on the first floor. her roommates, all three of them, were on the second floor. the entire night shift of the fair lawn police department raced to the scene to try to find all those women. >> last night was a tragedy because we lost two lives but i firmly believe if it wasn't for the actions of the officers behind me, the fire department, oem, rescue, ambulance, it could have been worse. >> reporter: this is video of the fire that raced through the two-story house. it's what police officers who were the first responders on the scene faced with lives on the line. >> i knocked on the door real quick and i pulled on the door handle to see if it was actually open. it was. and she was standing right in the living room. i pulled her out. i said you need to leave. >> reporter: officials say the fire began in a second floor bedroom. two of the women upstairs died in the fire. another climbed out of a window

time officers were still searching as best they could. >> we looked up toward the stairs and they were fully engulfed and we came out to the garage. we opened the garage, found the bed frame. >> reporter: that bed frame that officers used as a rescue ladder as firefighters were arriving. >> i got next to her, said i'm going to let you go. she was scared she was going to fall in to the ground. >> reporter: two of the women were taken to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. the house is run by the group alliance against homelessness who says the women were all independent and capable of getting around. the cause of the fire is under investigation. two women survived thanks to seven dedicated police officers who risked their lives. >> doing our job basically. >> the fire marshal is looking deeper in to what may have been

the problem with that space heater. was it faulty? was it an electrical problem? questions along those lines. and the names of the victims have not been released. live in fairlawn, toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. police have arrested a man accused of shooting a state trooper then crashing in to a school bus. investigators say it started when the trooper pulled over a driver for an expired registration in philadelphia this morning. police say the suspect took off and opened fire at the trooper who chased him. the suspect then crashed in to the bus. fortunately no children were onboard. the suspect was arrested a short time later. the trooper was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive. it happens every year. there are going to be street closures because of the thanksgiving day parade. it's going to start tomorrow when the balloons are inflated on the upper west side. you can expect closures between 76th street and 79th between columbus and amsterdam. central park's

[ laughter ] >> you know them. lee is going to tell us about the wind conditions shortly. catholic charities helping cash strapped families this thanksgiving. cardinal dolan led the annual distribution of thanksgiving meals in harlem. about 700 people were given the makings for a full holiday meal. in new york state more than 3 million people rely on assistance to meet basic food needs. mayor de blasio lending a hand to make sure less fortunate new yorkers are able to enjoy a healthy thanksgiving feast. the mayor met with volunteers and helped prepare meals at st. john's bread and life pantry. they packaged foods to be

a big breakthrough for space travel. blue origin, a company created by amazon's founder, jeff besos, has created reusable rockets. these rockets were shot more than 300,000 feet in to space. they came back safely to earth and they actually landed upright. this is big because until now, rockets were literally tossed away after a launch and can never be used again. blue

new details. a manhattan dentist busted for child porn and drugs goes to court. for the first time we hear from someone inside his clinic. first an eyewitness news investigators exclusive. an alleged scheme to rip off taxpayers. >> authorities say the alleged medicaid scam recruited. authorities searched the office for evidence. he's here now in the studio with his exclusive. jim. >> there's one less medical clinic operating this evening and that may be a good thing for taxpayers. following an eyewitness news alert to the

clinic has been shut down. suspected, authorities say, of medicaid fraud. >> reporter: police from the attorney general's medicaid fraud unit moved in on this medical clinic in east harlem this morning, seizing medical billing records, equipment, and files. for weeks prior to this raid, eyewitness news had been investigating the same medical clinic using hidden camera, we went undercover to see whether poor people desperate to make a little money were turning over their medicaid cards, which in the wrong hands are as good as cash. we spent days undercover observing several hawkers, also known as patient recruiters, outside the medical clinic, approaching people, offering medicaid card. when someone handed over their card, the hawker would then text or e-mail the information to someone inside the clinic. this woman

enters the clinic after giving her card to one of the recruiters. spending less than 10 minutes inside, she comes out. seconds later one of the recruiters hands her an envelope. after observing this scenario play out numerous times over various days, we sent an undercover medicaid cardholder to walk by the clinic to see if he'd get approached. he did immediately. >> got medicaid? >> yeah. >> let me check it out. >> reporter: the recruiter told our perfectly hate undercover person that a real quick check inside would get him $30 cash. >> check you out right now, if it comes back good, you go in there and do a physical. then you get the $30. >> reporter: the boldness of the operation surprised this former medicaid fraud investigators. >> the way they were accosting people on the street, that's not a legitimate practice for any kind of medical provider. they'll take whatever

the medicaid card and the provider, the recipient number that goes with it and that's they can use it over and over again. >> reporter: for days we watched as the patient recruiters got medicaid card information for a quick $30. week after week in an operation that could be costing taxpayers a fortune in medical charges that authorities tell us were either unneeded or never provided. >> two weeks ago we alerted law enforcement to our findings. they launched their own investigation which resulted in to today's raid and the closing down of this harlem medical clinic. >> they could be running up prescriptions, running up any expensive. >> we've been watching the clinic since early september and today when the ag's medicaid fraud unit showed up, small army with them. at least 15 police officers. they spent

hours tagging and organizing hundreds of the patient records hauled off as evidence in what we're told is an expanding investigation. new at 5:00, a popular dentist facing child porn and drug charges just had a bail hearing and for the first time we're hearing from one of his employees. eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson is live outside federal court in brooklyn with details. >> the doctor is a drug addict, that's what his attorney just told me inside the courthouse, that the dentist fully understands just how serious these charges are, but remains fairly focused. at his office, dental work has stopped and patients are leaving. >> we're stunned. we're mad. we're shocked. >> reporter: it is anything but business as usual here inside this chelsea dent al office where today some patients called telling what staff is left that they won't be coming back. things have been in limbo ever since federal agents raided the

practice, maintaining its owner john wolfe exchanged dentdal work for meth and possessed child pornography videos. this man did not want to show his face. we'll call him ted. >> whatever happened happened after hours i'm sure. i'm here from 9:00 till 7:00, it was all very professional. >> reporter: but at night authorities say wolfe had sex parties in the basement of this office, living, quote, a bizarre duality. that's how federal authorities described wolfe's life. an a.i.d.s. activist in the 80s. >> i know there's a great need for dentists to treat a.i.d.s. patients. >> reporter: he spoke about putting a lawsuit against a landlord who didn't want him to treat patients with the disease. all of that in stark contrast to whatever else the 59-year-old was allegedly doing. authorities say he's hiv positive and was punctureing condoms in order to spread the virus to his partners. everyone

jesus church here in richmond hill where we just got done talking with the priest. they say everything happens for a reason. the priest here check this out. this is a picture of the nativity scene. it's inside the church. the nativity scene is inside the church and the priest tells me yesterday the custodian was setting it up a little too he forgets to mention that to the custodian. thankfully because someone, a mom, left her newborn baby boy in the manger in that scene and the custodian heard the baby crying. the umbilical cord was still attached. emergency crews came here. the baby was taken away to jamaica hospital where he's since recovering. he's okay. he's just over 5 pounds. he's 17 inches long and the priest is obviously calling this just an incredible story of survival and

re the governor of indiana is facing a legal challenge after turning away a syrian family connecticut. the aclu has filed a lawsuit against mike pence. pence announced he would allow migrants from syria to be relocated in the state. the civil liberties group says the protection clause in the constitution.

that was being set up inside this church. the holy child jesus church here in richmond hill, queens, and this is a picture of the newborn baby when he was spotted inside. he's a newborn baby boy about 5 pounds, umbilical cord still attached. the priest that we just talked to explains the custodian in the church was actually setting up this nativity scene a bit too early for his liking. but the priest forgot to tell him to stop. thankfully forgot. >> it was completely by accident that you forgot to tell the custodian, listen, don't set it up so soon? >> i had not intended for it to be set up this early. usually we wake for the third week of advent to set up the scene. by it being up, this woman found in it this home for her child. we waited for 911 to come. while
