>> saw a policeman with a machine gun yesterday which i hadn't seen in town in other years. >> make you feel safer? >> sure. >> reporter: also rolled out is the new critical response command. up to 500 heavily armed and highly trained officers added to the counterterrorism unit and patrolling herald square and other high profile locations were the elite able to strike very quickly. >> that's kind of alarming to see them with the rifles like that. i know that intention is good. so i do feel protected. >> reporter: as thousands of people move along west 77th street to see the giant balloons being inflated, hammer, one of several bomb sniffing dogs, was also working. they're being joined by other officers with radiation detection devices able to detect a dirty bomb. >> keep your eyes open and keep everybody safe. >> let's go to newscopter7. we have an

had a little trouble getting around today. the air train broke down and people had to take buses to get around for more than an hour. everything is up and running once again. >> and an unmistakable security presence on the trains. military personnel highly visible at penn station. it's all hands on deck for amtrak police who have been given extra training. the mta is implementing increased patrol on trains and random bag checks on the platforms. from planes, trains, now automobiles. millions of drivers are expected to hit the road among record low gas prices. the cheapest since 2008. right now you're looking at live pictures along the george washington bridge where traffic is starting to buildup. anthony johnson is along the new jersey turnpike with a look at traffic conditions there. anthony, how's it looking? >> you know what, that's exactly what we start ed to notice. starting around 3:00 this afternoon, a buildup of traffic on the roads, particularly on the garden state parkway. even some build-ups

out here on the turnpike. so if you're leaving late this afternoon for your thanksgiving travel end of the evening, i hope you pack some patience. >> reporter: traffic was starting to pick up this afternoon as folks getting off from work starting to hit the roads. newscopter7 traveling over the garden state parkway where heavy traffic, backup and delays were taking place southbound. we should expect to see this the rest of the evening. >> maybe 15 to 20 minutes of decent driving and hit traffic for an accident. traffic because of traffic. coming up the jersey turnpike wasn't bad. i've been in traffic the last 45 minutes. pretty much going 15 miles per hour the whole time. >> i'm definitely getting ready for traffic. i saw it on my app. all red all the way down. >> start ing from where to where? >> coming from the gw bridge going to roanoke, north carolina. >> reporter: the key today for traveling was to start early. >> so far it's been absolutely terrific and we have a computer

will be open on the expressway commonly known as the brooklyn battery tunnel for friday morning's commute. if you and two others are in your car, hopefully you'll have a faster drive. how about that weather, sade? that's what's on everybody's mind. meteorologist jeff smith is in for lee goldberg. he has you covered with the accuweather forecast. he's outside our studios on the upper west side. hopefully you got some good news. i think you do. >> i think it's pretty good news. the busiest travel day of the year is going to turn out to be one of the quietest weather days at least in this area. calm winds out here, clear skies. we've had throngs of people going by to head up to that balloon inflation here on the upper west side. temperature right now is sitting in the middle 40s at central park. 45 to be exact. if you're head ing to these activities during the evening hours, temperatures actually not falling off that quickly, knowing down by maybe a degree or so every couple of hours. just after midnight we're back all

eyes of course though on tomorrow, the thanksgiving day parade. 7:00 in the morning, a little bit chilly out there. around 41 degrees so people waiting in the stands for the parade to start, going to be chilly. by the 48. then temperatures actually noon time. the thing about tomorrow we're not going to see maybe very early in clouds quickly increase as we get a wind coming off the water transporting some of the moisture from the atlantic ocean. there could even be a touch of drizzle in a couple of spots tomorrow afternoon. the big story during the next couple of days, highs going 10 to 15 degrees above average. wait till you see how warm it's going to be for the shoppers on black friday. we'll have that forecast coming up on the other side of the break. back in to you. to check the weather on the go no matter where you are, go to abc7ny.

the street closures for tomorrow's parade as well as realtime traffic updates on our website. a landlord speaking out for the first time about one of her tenants. a mother and her 15-year-old daughter shot in the car in new jersey. they were trying to get away from the gunman when they crashed in to a pole. new jersey reporter toni yates at the police department in linden. >> this family is seeing a blessing in the face of this tragedy. that's because doctors at university hospital in newark have told linden police that this mother who was shot several times will survive. as you said, she was trying to get away from a gunman who was trying to kill her and her child. >> when i saw that car wrapped around that pole, i knew it was her because i know her car and my heart goes out to the family. >> reporter: this is the toyota camry regina jarvis saw in pictures wrapped around a utility pole. it was her tenant who was driving, speeding away from a gunman who was ambushed

and shot the woman and her daughter as they were getting in to the car on middlesex street in linden. >> her daughter observed a man approaching her. apparently words were exchanged between the man and younger girl and the mother became concerned and told the daughter to get in the car. once the daughter got in the car, they were starting to pull out of the driveway. the man drew a firearm, a handgun, and walked around to the front of the car and proceeded to fire multiple gunshots at the car. >> reporter: the mother, bleeding from several gunshot wounds, hit the gas and made it a block away, crashing in to a utility pole on east henry street. critically hurt but she was out of the gunman's range. saved her life and her 15-year-old daughter's. >> she's a pleasant girl. her girlfriends come pick her up. they go to school. i can't understand who would do something like this because they're good people. >> reporter: police are trying to find the masked gunman and his motive.

daughter or both were targeted. it's premature in to the investigation. we'll have to do digging in the background of both to see what precipitated this attack. >> reporter: police are not releasing the victims' names, however crimestoppers is offering a $10,000 reward to try to find that masked gunman. toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. new video in a story we brought you last week. an mta bus driver temporarily blinded behind the wheel by a laser. now police have received clear video of the man they are looking for. police say this passenger aimed a laser pointer at the rearview mirror last wednesday in the tree mont all the passengers got out including the man with the laser pointer. in new jersey fire destroyed one house and damaged newscopter7 was over the scene as firefighters worked. the fire began in a vacant home and spread to homes on both sides. people lived in

as we've got some breaking news in brooklyn where a pedestrian has been struck by a bus. this happening at ocean avenue and avenue k in the midwood section. we're told the person struck was taken to the hospital. the bus driver did stay at the scene. newscopter7 is on its way and we'll bring you the very latest as soon as it gets there. more protests and growing outrage in chicago today over the video showing a police officer shooting a teenager. the shooting happened last year but just yesterday the video was released and murder charges filed in the case prompting

what took so long. >> reporter: a call for answers and accountable. community leaders and activists reacting to this dashcam video, the video captured the moment officer jason van dyke opens fire on 17-year-old laquan mcdonald. we freezeed the video here but prosecutors say even after mcdonald collapsed, van dyke kept shooting. 16 bullets seconds. >> it is unfathomable and unacceptable that it would take a year when all of the facts in this case were known the night it happened. >> reporter: the shooting occurred more than a year ago. it began with police responding to a report of a suspect with a knife breaking in to cars. after van dyke began shooting, the video shows another officer kicking a knife away from mcdonald's body. investigators

say mcdonald never threatened the officers. >> at the end of the day i'd rather take my time and bet it right than rush to judgment and get it wrong. >> reporter: calling the investigation complex on tuesday, prosecutors announced murder charges against van dyke, the same day a court order led to the release of the video. some upset protesters are now demanding the city's top cop to resign. >> van dyke's attorney is arguing the officer feared for his life. the city in the meantime has reached a $5 million settlement with the mcdonald family. the funeral was held today in minnesota for a man killed during a confrontation with police. hundreds of mourners paid their respects to 24-year-old jumar clark. he was shot and killed during a struggle with police last week. his death sparked more than a week of protests. witnesses insist clark was handcuffed but police dispute that. protesters want investigators to release

video of that shooting. in paris new numbers rates at some hotels have plummeted by more than 30% in the days since those terrorist attacks. meanwhile french president francois hollande and german counselor angela merkel laid flowers. as france and belgium continue their hunt for two fugitives believed to be involved in the attacks, the belgian capital is starting to return to normal. schools in brussels reopened today and the subway system partially reopened even though the city remains on its highest possible alert level. authorities raised that alert level on saturday saying the threat of a further attack was serious and imminent. conflicting claims today from russia and turkey about the russian war planes shot down by turkey this week. the turkish military released what it says

is a recording of the warnings given to a russian fighter jet. turkey claims the plane was in its air space but the navigator who survived and was rescued told russian news media there he also said his plane was flying over syrian territory. pope francis began his first ever visit to africa today and urged kenyans to work for peace. speaking at nairobi state house, pope francis pushed kenya to work to heal ethnic, religious and economic divisions. more than 45,000 meals handed out today to families in the bronx that may have gone without thanksgiving dinner. city harvest partnered with blue apron to provide all the trimmings. each person got a box containing a cornish hen and everything needed to make

dinner. more than 700 people volunteered for the fourth annual fill the bag event in nassau county on long island. about 15,000 grocery bags were packed with items including ham, green beans. cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and stuffing. a lot of food was purchased by the owner of midisland collision. will go to churches, charities, and needy people. we've got jeff smith in for lee goldberg. beautiful night for the inflating of the balloons. >> compared to last thanksgiving eve. >> we had accumulating snow in the northern western suburbs last year at this time. this year couldn't be much more different. we're looking at a live shot over the empire state building. if you can't make it to the balloon inflation, look up at the empire state build ing. it's lit up in these beautiful l.e.d. lights, relatively new system there. they can actually change these lights on command and you've got the thanksgiving colors up there. it's beautiful. right now that temperature, 45. humidity at 63

we know about the pedestrian at this point, it was brought to a local hospital in cardiac arrest. obviously police are investigating this scene, shutting down ocean avenue between avenue j and avenue k. if you're trying to go southbound you can take it over to east 19th street or if you're trying to go northbound, east 21st. this will be an ongoing investigation. reporting live over midwood, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. we're learning tonight that football great frank gifford suffered from degenerative brain disease cte. that revelation from the family of a former new york giant. gifford's brain was donated to research on football injuries and head trauma after his death in august. gifford suffered a crushing hit in 1960 that put him in the hospital for 10 years and kept him off the field for nearly two years. jury deliberations expected to continue monday in the trial of sheldon silver. jurors worked through the morning

for a moment and recognize many, many of us are fortunate. but we know in this city there are a lot of folks not as fortunate. >> you're listening to mayor de blasio talking about the added security that will be in place for tomorrow's parade. they're working to keep spectators safe. they have additional mobile cameras, helicopters, uniformed officers, and specially trained dogs to detect any explose rfbs. so this is something they're on and they will continue to keep new yorkers safe as they've done. a wild police chase in new jersey. the whole thing caught on camera. >> throughout the 20-minute pursuit, the suspect and police weaved in and out of traffic, dodging oncoming traffic and hit speeds of over 100 miles per hour. when you see it, it is amazing no one was hurt. >> eyewitness news reporter jim hoffer is in the news room with details. >> when you think of how many miles this chase covered through several counties across state lines it seems impossible no one got killed.

injury and the very thing that faced danger from this reckless fugitive is what in the end helped to catch him. traffic. >> reporter: the chase at times reaching speeds up to 110 miles per hour. captured on dashboard camera inside the police car, the palisade parkway officer. you can hear police radio transmissions as the chase unfolds and as the murder suspect endangers his life and many others as he suddenly veers off the parkway and across the median through a gas station. the suspect then heads southbound in to northbound traffic on the parkway. stunned motorists desperately trying to swerve out of his way. he continues driving in to oncoming traffic for nearly a full minute. at times the chase reaching speeds between 70 and 90 miles per hour. near the gw

david campos, exits the parkway on to roads in fort lee, flying through red lights and busy intersections, the parkway police in close pursuit as they learn campos is armed and dangerous, suspected in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend hours earlier in her home in upstate troy, new york. about 15 minutes in to the chase near secaucus, campos entered the new jersey turnpike heading southbound. it's on this stretch where campos hits speeds nearing 110 miles per hour in a last chance effort to get away. but this out of state driver not used to new jersey traffic never account ed for backups at the turnpike tolls which soon became his undoing. he hits a line of tractor-trailers, veers on to the right shoulder, trying to get past them, but soon hits a wall of traffic at exit 18's toll plaza.

getaway comes to a stop as traffic, perhaps in the first, saves the day as police surround his car and capture the suspected killer. >> as yo did not resist arrest. he remains in bergen county jail on new jersey charges of attempting to elude police. he's awaiting extradition to troy for the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend. charges are pending. we should note it was an automatic license plate reader in the new york state police trooper's car that spotted campos' vehicle on the new york throughway. up next, the search for the

here to determine if this is the mother who left the infant at holy child jesus church and now we're hearing from the custodian who first spotted the baby boy. >> eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne is in richmond hill with the details. >> everyone tells me here it really was a community effort to take care of this child. could this mother face any charges? holy child jesus church here is a safe haven, meaning you can leave a child here but under new york state law, the abandoned child has to be handed over to an adult at the safe haven location. that's not what happened here. we asked the queen's da, could this mother face any charges? they really did not want to answer that question, only saying they want to speak with her. >> reporter: police want to speak with the woman you see in the hooded sweatshirt. the surveillance video shows her buying a towel from a 99 cents store around the corner from the church. the clerk here tells us

it's unclear if she's the mother of the baby boy found monday afternoon lying in a nativity being set up here inside holy child jesus church in richmond hill. custodian jose moran was cleaning the church when he heard crying. i felt nervous at the beginning when i saw him but happy because i saved his life. moran called over to the rectory office, parishioner regina santoro ran over to help. >> i picked up the towel and opened up the towel and his little face was there and he started to move around. >> reporter: santoro called for geraldine walsh, the school nurse at the perish school. >> we assessed the baby. respiratory-wise he was fine, he was breathing okay. he was moving. i tied a knot in the umbilical cord and we wrapped him up and made sure he was warm and kept him comfortable till the ambulance came. >> reporter: doctors say the
