person could be responsible for four other suspicious fires in the neighborhood. >> stephen kim is there with our lead story. >> reporter: bill and liz, take a look at what is left of this house behind me in forest hills. it was under construction when it burned down last night. suspicious. the biggest clue, a note with a riddle left assist the scene taunting investigators to catch whoever may have done this. residents say they think they know why this is happening. >> it's a pattern in forest hills queens that has investigators searching for answers. this latest suspicious fire burning through a house under construction on 67th drive late wednesday night. the 7th similar fire in the neighborhood in the past month. now fire officials say at least four of them are connected and three of those are arson. they are still looking into if this latest was deliberately set. meanwhile a major clue left behind last night, a note at the scene appearing to challenge investigators to figure out a riddle. >> the police department and

the fire department are actively looking into it. >> reporter: surveillance video of a previous fire on november 17th shows a man black near the scene. the video though is grainy and described as poor quality. investigators would like to talk to this man in black. most of the fires in the past month have been set at vacant buildings being renovated or while investigators are casting a wide net when it comes to a have one. >> i think somebody is doing this on purpose over jealously. >> reporter: development in this neighborhood has been an ongoing issue for years. renovating and expanding their homes into what opponents have dubbed mcmansions. owners of the so-called mcmansions say they are being targeted for their culture. many live with three generations under one roof. now they feel unsafe if their own homes. >> it could be somebody who has a vendetta against certain type of people. people are scared to buy houses here and start building anew.

>> we are the target right now, i think. and i don't know if it's because of the hateness or we are thinking what if it's terror. we don't feel safe anymore in this area. >> reporter: again, fire officials are not saying that this is the motive. but they haven't ruled it out yet either. at this point fire officials are looking at every possible motive for these fires. reporting live in forest hills, stephen kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> now to of the public fixings. the weather nearly public for the parade. more than 3 million people lined up to enjoy the sights and the sounds. meanwhile on this day of giving, some people giving back. the salvation army serving meals to thousands of needy people in lower manhattan. in harlem, al sharpton serving meals at the national action network. we begin with kimberly richardson at the macy's day thanksgiving parade.

everybody in it wants to be here. >> reporter: here marching, rolling, taking part in the best thanksgiving parade out there. >> we got here at 5:00. >> it's dark. >> it's cold. >> reporter: among the balloons, there were four new ones this year. and bands: [music] that is where you will find betty. the 84-year-old should look familiar. >> how did this change your life after last year. >> oh, my heavens. oh, my heavens. i was starting to get to feel like i was a reality star or something. >> reporter: you see, last year, same place, same time, betty fulfilled one of her life- long dreams to be a clown in the thanksgiving parade. she was a hit. >> when you saw her last year out on this road, how did that make you feel? >> tears of a clown. >> reporter: chris has reason to be emotional.

with her. now we have this opportunity and it's exciting. >> reporter: shannon is betty's granddaughter. together stays together. this time it's all hands on deck. the hardest part of all of this, her grandson patrick tells me staying in character. >> they're quiet and bashful. you have to be out there and excited and ready to go. >> did your grandmother give you any tips. >> just have fun. lives by. >> she walks down the street it's amazing. >> reporter: betty a certified clown celebrity so touched by all of this. >> it's so nice to have happiness in the world. >> kimberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> well, there was a drone route. street. teenage son. they were located and questioned by police. officers issued a violation and returned the drone to them.

otherwise a peaceful parade. in spite of a heightened state of alert following the paris terror attacks. extra 2500 police officers were along the route in uniform and in plained clothes. the director of homeland security was also along the route to assure the nation and the city that we are safe. time to kick off the holiday shopping season. many retailers are hoping to cash in by attracting early shoppers. a.j. ross is at the toys r us in times square that opened up a little while ago. a.j. >> go, a.j. [music] >> reporter: yeah. i can't even stop. the music is contagious. a little dancing. for many families these black friday deals are like icing on the cake. they are doing everything they can to get people through their doors. the list goes on. and they're all really trying

priceless memories for families this holiday season. with christmas less than a month away, many families are wasting no time, taking advantage of early black friday deals at major retailers all over the city. >> is it worth standing in line? >> this is nothing. this is very fast. >> really. >> yeah. >> past years i used to stand behind the block. this is nothing. >> reporter: in the heart of times square, families from australia to north carolina and everything in between anxiously waited for hours for the toys r us to open where inside they were greeted by music, elves and deals. >> he is the man who picks out yeah. yeah. >> do you have a budget. >> not at all. >> oh. >> no budget. you're buying for me today. >> okay. >> i've got you covered. >> reporter: parents say it's not about how much you spend, but who you spend the holidays

56 here in the park. you have gone down into the middle and upper 40s north and west of the city and well south of the city. down to 48 at tom's river. lower 50s on the island. let's track these temperatures and weather conditions through the evening for you shoppers out there searching for bargains into the late-night hours. temperatures only falling down to about 52 in and around the five burrows of new york city. but midnight. that is incredibly mild for this time of year. low 50s on the island. i want to draw your attention to this cloud cover that develops late tonight and early tomorrow morning. mixed in will be patchy dense fog. so you want to be careful if you're traveling later on tonight. there may be reduced areas of visibility out there. 50 by 7:00 in the morning. as soon as the fog burns off, we're back up to 60 by midday. it gets even warmer than that by later tomorrow afternoon. we will detail that and a cooler weekend coming up later in the half hour. liz, back over to you.

>> looking forward to it all. people in one community in new jersey should have running water again tonight. new jersey american water says service will be fully restored in the next few hours. dozens of households lost water today when an underground pipe ruptured around 4:00 this morning. toni talked to resident who's had a solution to the problem. >> it's a garden hose. one faucet to the other and it back feeds into the house. >> just a neighbor needing help. that's all. we were here to help out. >> how great is that. the repairs were delayed this afternoon while crews dug around gas and sewer lines. a lockdown at the white house just lifted. three hours after a very troubling security lapse. a man jumping over the fence, wrapped in an american flag holding an inch. he was quickly arrested. despite recent security upgrades supposed to make the fence harder to scale. apparently it did not.

tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, both red and green. we're just getting started. >> this is a pear tree and a peach tree. a baby peach tree. this is another peach. we have a plum there. a neck nectar on this side. >> reporter: kids and teenagers grow every vegetable and herb and fruit in the garden. but the lessons learned here focus on more than just food and nature. >> i'm always teaching them initiative. you know, responsibility. do it yourself. don't wait for nobody to do it for you. >> reporter: it's not just the kids who reap the rewards of the urban farm. the many families in the neighborhood rely on the farm for fresh healthy food priced just right. >> all of our food here is grown by the kids but the community comes in and takes it for free. we don't charge.

more than 7,000 meals today dished out by the folks at the ballory mission on the east side. my honor to help out there, along with my two oldest children. got there early this morning for the first serving of breakfast. all free. the uber talented actress bridget one of the many servers giving back today. i had never seen her work because her work is on at the same time as 20/20. >> ever. her. the fact that she just got >> october 17th. >> nothing about this at all. >> and she proceeded to get a security detail when he showed up. >> exactly. surrounded. meanwhile for black friday shoppers who were heading out there, they're in for a weather treat. >> incredible tomorrow. temperatures in the middle 60s. a good three to five degrees warmer than today. we ended the day with a beautiful sunset.

over new york harbor. the time lapse. this afternoon. an out standing thanksgiving holiday. here is a look at the empire state building in festive the temperature is 56. wind. the wind is calm. the combination of the two factors is conducive for fog developing later on tonight. i think that will develop especially after midnight into early tomorrow morning. tomorrow you get off to a foggy start. then it burns off and temperatures into the 60s in the afternoon. after we got up to 60 during the day today which is 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. the sun considers setting just after 430 -- the sunsetting just after 4:30 this afternoon. it will be a cooler, cloudier weekend.

may be getting a touch of rain. i'll explain that in a minute. 54 belmar. down to 46 at tom's river. this nice weather courtesy of a big area of high pressure located south of the maritimes. but the ridge extending all the way back to the east coast protecting us from rainfall and cloud cover for the time being. we're they're not so lucky weatherwise is in portions of the midwest they're getting ice storms from the texas and oklahoma panhandles and nebraska and kansas. lows tonight down to 50 in central park. you will get down to the upper 30s well north and west. that fog developing after midnight. then we break out into nice sunshine. temperature getting up to 64. it's a mild mix of sun and clouds as we head into the afternoon. this front just kind of lifts through on saturday. not much moisture. because of that just a stray shower around, north and west

then the front is just off to our west on sunday. close enough to provide cloud cover remaining in the area during the day on sunday. accuweather forecast for tonight, partly to mostly cloudy. mild out there. areas of fog developing after midnight. we're down to 50. during the day tomorrow, patchy morning fog and low clouds. then that breaks for a mix of clouds and sun. up to 64. mostly cloudy. mild tomorrow night. down to 49. could be a stray morning shower saturday. otherwise cloudyand 54. still cloudy on sunday. rain not too far off to the south. we will be watching that just in case. upper 40s on monday. sun examine clouds. looks dry for winter's eve. >> good. >> people outside will love that. >> it's a great night. >> thanks, jeff. >> sports up next. >> thanksgiving and football go together like football and thanksgiving.
