doesn't quite put in to words the tragic circumstances here. it reads restaurant closed because of unexpected emergency. we'll open on the 3rd and apologize for the inconvenience. what happened here was so much more than an inconvenience. it was around 10:30 last night when a horrible accident occurred 5 minutes from here, killing three people. investigators say a 43-year-old man from maine driving a dodge ram pulled over to check on a cattle trailer he was towing. cops say a second vehicle struck that trailer. the driver of the hyundai exited his vehicle and that's when a ford passenger van carrying 12 passengers believed to be all employees from this chinese restaurant struck the trailer, the dodge, then killing him and two others in the van. the driver of the dodge was injured. everyone inside the van was rushed to a hospital. tony works at the gymboree next to the restaurant.

years ago her business and the restaurant was the first to open and from beginning everyone was worm, hardworking, immigrant workers. >> the workers are all really, really nice people. they're very conscientious. they're very hard workers. they're always waving to the children. they're very nice to the parents. parents all go and eat they're super, super, super nice people. >> officials say the others injured in this crash are expected to be okay. the names of the two other passengers killed in the van have not yet been released. business owners here say those workers took that van to and from work every day. reporting live in basking ridge, new jersey, cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. a major shakeup today in the athletic department at rutgers university. both the athletic director and the head football coach out. eyewitness news sports anchor laura behnke

>> with the college football regular season ending yesterday, you could call this black sunday in the ncaa. but for rutgers it hit more than just the head football coach. as you said both kyle flood and julie herman have both been relieved of their duties. flood had a 27-24 record since he took over the head coaching duties in 2012 but he's coming off a tumultuous season that saw arrests of several players and a suspension himself after he e-mailed a professor about one of the player's grades. herman has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons since the moment she took over in 2013. releasing a statement this afternoon, saying this is a change for the university names patrick hobbes as the scarlet knights' new athletic director. lucy yang will have

much more on the story as it continues to develop. all that on eyewitness news at 6:00. on this very busy travel day a deadly crash involving a new york state trooper now under investigation on long island. a woman involved in a rollover accident overnight on the southern state parkway was struck and killed by a passing driver. minutes later another passing driver crashed in to the back of a trooper vehicle as the trooper tried to secure the scene. the trooper was not hurt. also on long island, two homes in suffolk county guted overnight by an intense fire. the fire started around 2:30 this afternoon in the 900 block of sunrise highway of north babylon. when firefighters arrived on the scene, the flames had already spread to a house next door. the car parked in a driveway, that too went up in flames. one person was treated for smoke inhalation.

prompted the fdny to hand out smoke detectors in flatbush today. they joined eric adams, a licensed electrician was on hand to demonstrate the proper use of electrical extension investigators blame a power strip for starting a fire in east flatbush yesterday that killed an elderly couple. >> we do not want the holiday seasons of life to be replace would the lights of emergency vehicles responding to a fire. three out of five deaths in home fires is due to the absence of smoke alarms. >> investigators say the couple killed in yesterday's fire did not have working smoke detectors in their home. the suspect in that deadly shootout at a colorado planned parenthood clinic is scheduled to have his first court appearance monday afternoon. this as new information reveals

shooter to target that clinic. >> reporter: police have not announced an official motive for what happened inside this colorado springs planned parenthood but we're learning more about the accused gunman under arrest for the siege that killed three people and injured nine others. authorities say after 57-year-old surrendered he allegedly made rambling hostile comments about planned parenthood. during interviews he'd sometimes ramble but other times seemed rational. loretta lynch called the shooting a crime against women receiving healthcare at planned parenthood. the group itself says this crime is motivated by opposition to legal abortion. >> the tirade against planned parenthood in the last few months have really been over the top. >> reporter: planned parenthood has been a big topic on the campaign trail this year. republican candidates for president have often used strong

at the exclusive accuweather forecast. >> no snow november is no more. definitely a change for us reminding us what season we're in and the calendar about to change. we really are going back below average and temperatures felt a lot different today. 40s is really all we can get out of the thermometer today. upper 40s. even below 50 degrees for many areas. that's still 5 to 15 degrees off the temperatures as they were yesterday at the same time. notice the blue on the map. that's the cold filtering in as the front stalled out to the south of us. the rain starting to move on but as we go through the evening, the cool-down is basically happening in 10 to 15 degrees below the average is how we'll stay. the rest of this evening we're looking for temperatures to fall back in to the 30s. details on that plus this afternoon i've been working on the rain we're expecting in the accuweather 7-day forecast. more on that just ahead. donald trump doubles down on his assertion that crowds in new jersey were cheering the fall of the twin towers.

. an afternoon walk turned in to a life saving mission for two

sisters in california when they heard what sounded loyalty like the -- sounded a lot like the cries of a baby, they called for help. that infant had been abandoned and buried alive. >> reporter: evangeline heard what turned out to be the cries of a newborn baby while taking a walk with her sister. >> she said do you hear the baby crying? i said i don't know. i said it might be a cat. then my sister said no, it's a baby crying. >> reporter: the women were walking along a bike path next to a river bed around 4:00 friday afternoon. they dialed 911 after discovering the muffled cries were coming from a crevice covered with asphalt and debris. sheriff's deputies arrived and found a baby girl buried under a foot of rubble. the infant was wrapped in a hospital blanket. >> there's indication that the child was born at a medical facility or at a hospital.

baby was between 24 and 36 hours old. >> reporter: evangelina gets emotional as she talked about how sad she felt when she heard the baby. she said the newborn stopped crying when the deputy cradled her. authorities say the baby is now hospitalized in stable condition. >> if the child had spent the night there in those conditions, the baby wouldn't have survived. >> reporter: an l.a. county official says a life was saved in this case but he urges mothers who don't want to keep a child to use the safe surrender program. >> all they have to do is cross the threshold of any fire station, any sheriff's department in los angeles county and they are safe. the baby is safe. >> god bless them two ladies that found this baby. and god bless the baby that's still alive. strong baby. >> again authorities say that baby was likely a newborn and had been born in a medical

are now asking the public for help in locating the infant's parent. a suspect in custody tonight. investigators accuse him of killing a police officer in pennsylvania. the officer was shot as he answered a domestic abuse call. st. claire township officer reed was shot after officers responded to a domestic abuse call. police captured the suspect, 31-year-old ray shelter, after a six-hour man hunt. reed was a veteran police officer with more than 20 years on the force. republican presidential front runner donald trump is standing by his claims that muslims in new jersey celebrated the terror attacks on september 11th. on "meet the press" trump reasserted his claim the crowd cheered in new york city when the buildings collapsed despite

leaving thousands without power. in utah an early season snowstorm caught many drivers off guard this weekend. several accidents there. traffic jams and road closures all across the salt lake city area. amy freeze in tonight for jeff smith to take a look at that. hard to complain about a little chilly weather. >> my parents were in salt lake city over the weekend. they said the roads were just terrible. we haven't even had snow around here yet. last few days in the 60. felt pretty good. i won't not say that it was a rude awakening that you had to actually wear the coat and felt like november around here today. temperatures did finish in the upper 40s so about average for this time of year. 49 is our 30-year average high. looking out over the city, really spectacular. if you have a couple layers on and your gloves ready to go, it's fairly nice outside. showers have quit finally it looks like for south jersey. they lingered most of the day. normal high, there it is. 49.

day, 69 degrees set back in 1990. we weren't breaking any records last couple of days but certainly going down in the books, the history pretty impressive to see those low 60s friday and saturday. this day finishes with some clouds lingering for the south jersey and jersey shore. last of the rain moving off the del marva right now. this is all bringing in cooler air. these temperatures will be even colder as another shot of air comes in that's even colder. you see the winds coming out of the north. that's the pattern we have at least through tomorrow night. then we'll be tracking the chances for rain. as that approaches tuesday in to wednesday, there will be periods where we potentially get heavy rain. so these clouds we're seeing on accutrack, those will start to fade out. tomorrow sunshine giving way to cloudiness. we're watching what's happening with all this moisture over the ohio and tennessee river valleys. this

has created flooding rains, heavy downpours, lots of problems as this storm has come across the central u.s. parts of the storm involved in the ice storms we saw coming out of oklahoma. when it gets to the east coast, we've got moisture left over and it starts to affect us on tuesday. so monday is actually the coldest day of the week but it actually looks pretty decent. 46 degrees with then as we look at the futurecast, we'll see the change coming in for tuesday. it starts very slowly with overcast conditions tuesday morning. then finally drizzle starting. it will come up from the southwest. then showers will become more widespread on tuesday but the heaviest rain coming in for the computer models is tuesday night in to wednesday. we could potentially see up to an rain. few clouds tonight. 35 the oferb -- overnight low. 20s in the suburbs. good looking day tomorrow. partly sunny conditions. very brisk but temperatures stuck in the mid 40s. that's below average. we start off in december and temperatures will be right about

here shows their proud to be hindu. they tell me they're terrified, afraid with the suspect out there he may come back. >> i don't think he's mental. he knew what he was doing. >> reporter: he's talking about the man seen here in this surveillance video, footage police just released, want you to take a close if you know who this person is. >> he watched it burn. >> he come here and watch. >> reporter: he lives next door to where this all went down. thursday morning just after 1:00 while everyone in this neighborhood was sleeping, police say this suspect lit 40 brightly colored hindu prayer flags on fire. the sacred items are symbols of faith. his family placed the jandi in their front yard, never expecting someone would do this especially on thanksgiving day.

arrested a man on long island accused causing a deadly crash while driving impaired. he hit a man on a motorcycle yesterday afternoon. investigators say nadala's ability to drive the vehicle was impaired. he's charged with driving without a license and driving under the influence of drugs. video shows a detailed look at the moments before and after 12-year-old tamir rice was shot and killed by a police officer. prosecutors had the previously released surveillance video sequenced and enhanced frame by frame. though it doesn't appear to clear up the debate over whether tamir reached in to his waistband for a pellet gun as police arrived. a grand jury will decide whether to charge the officers involved. pope francis spreads a message of peace tonight as he nears the end of a sweeping

a close call caught on camera. a man narrowly escapes being hit by a train with his a couple noticed the car on the tracks near their home yesterday and they went to help the driver. they say he seemed confused and didn't know how he'd gotten all. they unbuckled the seatbelt. that's when they realized a freight train was barreling down the track. they were able to get him to safety. still they say they don't consider themselves heroes. >> we were all in the right place at the right time. it just happened that everything line up in the right way for him to be alive still. >> the couple says they would never have known that that car was stuck on the tracks if a friend hadn't gone outside to move his car. it is the latest tool in slimming down. a laser that doesn't exactly banish the fat

sweet time stalling out to the south. so a few showers are lingering for the del marva but everybody else is dry. we were able to make it to the 50s. everybody else pretty much stuck in the 40s. as we go tonight, temperatures fall in to the 30s in most spots, a few 20s showing up north and west. these winds driving out from the north, that's how we're getting the colder air coming in. temperatures will be slightly cooler. the last of the clouds are starting to break up through new jersey. we've already seen beautiful skies over long island. gorgeous for the hudson valley. we've got more rain to deal with right here. stretching back in to the central portions of the u.s. but it doesn't affect us tomorrow. we actually get sunny skies to start. clouds move in. it's 46 degrees for the high tomorrow. it's even cooler than the average but it looks like a real

monday night the clouds come back. tuesday morning by daybreak. we do have rain in the area. the heaviest rain appears as it comes tuesday night in to wednesday. here we are tuesday, 5:00, on the futurecast. there's the heavier rain that comes overnight tuesday into wednesday. that being said the top amounts look to be around an inch when all is said and done. that's what we'll expect to happen as we're continuing to watch the computer models. coldest spots, 27 degrees. north and west of the city. 46 for the high tomorrow. accuweather 7-day forecast , 57 on wednesday. bump this temperature up because the front comes through tuesday night. it's actually a warm front and our temperatures will be on the rise overnight. showers to start on wednesday and then we'll dry out. seasonal and sunny on thursday. 50 degrees. then we sort of slide easily toward the normal for this time of year. a unique offering from a

news reporter lauren glassberg shows us how. >> reporter: bushwick may be known as a hipster haven but two years ago nina moved here from suburban connecticut. she's a former broadway producer who at the age of 63 has found a new role. she's a mom for rent. >> every once in a while you've got to sit down across the table and hash things out. >> reporter: nina has two grown sons, one also lives in bushwick. she realized during her time at yoga class or cafes out and about, people were gravitating toward her. >> people open up to me about some issues in their lives and ask for my feedback and perspective and kind of wanting to talk about what was going on. >> reporter: natalie is one of those people. they often meet at natalie's company and discuss business matters and matters of the heart. >> she is kind of like shrink plus mentor plus mother. >> reporter: natalie's own
