suspensions, arrests, and a losing season. rutgers makes major changes to its athletic department after an embarrassing football season on and off the field. >> but first this evening, a deadly accident on a highway in new jersey. a van full of restaurant workers loses control and crashes in to two other vehicles. good evening, everyone. i'm sandra bookman. >> and i'm joe torres. three people were killed in the crash. several others were injured. police say a

towing a cattle trailer were stopped on the side of the highway when the van smashed in to them. >> the van crashed on i-287. it had just left the restaurant in basking ridge just a few miles away. eyewitness news reporter cefaan kim is there with the story. >> this isn't just any chinese restaurant. these are not just any chinese restaurant workers. those that know them say they're part of the community and as news of the tragedy begins to spread, an overwhelming sense of sadness could be felt here. >> it's devastating. it's actually devastating. >> reporter: toni-ann ludica overcome with sadness after learning two restaurant employees were killed in a horrific accident. it was around 10:30 when it happened on

i-287, just five minutes from the restaurant. >> workers are very conscientious, very hard workers. they're always like waving to the children. they're very nice to the parents. parents all go and eat there. so they're just super, super, super nice people. >> reporter: ludica says workers took that van to and from work every day. the sign posted on the front door of the restaurant reads restaurant closed due to an unexpected emergency and will reopen. we apologize for the inconvenience. but what happened here was so much more than an inconvenience. it started when a 34-year-old man from maine driving a dodge ram pulled over to check on a cattle trailer he was pulling. cops say a second vehicle struck that trailer. driver of the hyundai, 23-year-old ravi naik exited his vehicle. that's when they struck the guard rail, the trailer, and the dodge.

killing him and two others in the van. restaurant customers having a happened. >> it's almost like going to a friend's restaurant. >> it was like when they'd hear me, when i'd be ordering and recognized me. it wasn't like i was another customer. >> even if you didn't have all the money, the change, they'll let you go through. >> the driver of that dodge was injured and everyone inside that van was also rushed to a hospital. they're expected to be okay. in the meantime the names of those two victims who were killed in that van have not been released. reporting live in basking ridge, new jersey, cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. a deadly crash involving a new york state trooper is under investigation on long island tonight. a woman who was in a rollover accident overnight on the southern state parkway was

struck and killed by a passing driver. then minutes later another passing driver crashed in to the back of a trooper's vehicle as the trooper was trying to secure the scene. the trooper was not hurt. major shakeup in the rutgers athletic department. the athletic director and the head football coach fired. the contracts of kyle flood and julie hermann were terminated today following a troubling season on and off the field. the university president now calling for a fresh start for that program. eyewitness news reporter lucy yang is in with details. >> students coming back to rutgers university after thanksgiving break should brace themselves for a big shakeup in the sports department. as you said, the football coach is now gone. it's history for kyle flood who was fired this afternoon. the football team had a disastrous season, bad football combined with bad behavior off the field meant coach flood was shown the exit

door today. you may remember he was suspended for three games and fined $50,000 this season after he reportedly contact adprofessor about one of his player's grades which is not allowed. they were eventually kicked off the team for being arrested for armed robbery, burglary. university president issued this statement on the firing of coach flood, quote, our continued struggles on the field combined with several off-the-field issues have convinced me we need new leadership of our football program. now the review act fell on julie hermann. she was brought in two and a half years ago to clean up department. the scandals didn't end under her leadership. one report has her salary listed at $250,000 a year. despite that she was let go today according

to the university president. quote, we need a fresh start. >> the replacement of the football coach raises special challenges for us. that made it appropriate i think for us to start fresh, wipe the slate clean and take this opportunity to move rutgers forward to take it to where we never can go. >> an interim football coach has been named and a new athletic director was announced at the same time as the firing which suggests these firings had been in the work for some time now. the new athletic director, patrick hobbes, comes from seton hall. he also works for the officer of the governor, governor chris christie, praising dean hobbes' selection saying rutgers is fortunate to have him. lucy yang for channel 7 eyewitness news. there is new information tonight about a possible motive behind the deadly attack at a planned parenthood clinic in colorado.

authorities say robert dear made rambling, hostile comments about the organization after he opened fire at the facility killing three people and injuring nine on friday. the 57-year-old surrendered through a five-hour standoff. today several republican presidential candidates who support restricting access to abortion condemned the attack. >> what he did is domestic terrorism and what he did is absolutely abominable. >> any hate crime is a horrible thing no matter from where it comes and should be condemned very strongly. >> it's unacceptable and horrific and wrong. >> democratic presidential candidates along with the white house have strongly condemned the shooting and express support for planned parenthood. the suspect will be in court on tuesday. on long island, an intense overnight fire gutted two homes in suffolk county. by the time firefighters arrived on the scene in north babylon, the flames had spread from one home

on sunrise highway to another right next door. a car parked in the driveway also went up in flames. one person at that scene was treated for smoke inhalation. a deadly fire in brooklyn prompted the fdny to hand out free smoke detectors in east flatbush again today. members of the fire department joined brooklyn borough president eric adam. a licensed electrician was on hand to demonstrate the proper use of electrical extension cords. a power strip is blamed on a fire in east flatbush yesterday that killed an elderly couple. president obama landed in france moments ago. he's in pair frs -- in paris for the u.n. climate conference. the president wrote, the u.s. has shown it's possible to make environmental gains while creating jobs and expanding the economy. he says the goal in paris is a long-term framework for more global reductions with each nation setting targets that

meanwhile in paris earlier today, violent clashes erupted between police and climate change activists who refuse to obey a ban on protests due to the recent terror attacks in that city. more than 200 protesters were arrested as police tried to disperse the ruckus crowd. climate change on the minds of demonstrators across the world tonight. bill nye the science guy led a rally on the steps of the hall this afternoon. he was joined by the members of the people's climate movement. speakers outlined key policy commitments they'd like to see from the de blasio administration. >> new yorkers take such pride in being new yorkers. we take such pride of being citizens of this world-class city. it's an opportunity to lead the world. if we can get new york 100% renewable in 15 years we can get

in queens tonight, a search for an arsonist targeting religious symbols. surveillance video shows a man in woodhaven thanksgiving day. he set fire to brightly colored hindu flags. they post the sacred items as symbols of their faith. the incident has unsettled some in the community. >> we have little kids here. people living here. it's dangerous. i don't feel safe at all.

>> he had something over his head. he pulled something. >> police are hoping someone call. new jersey governor chris christie picks up a much needed bid. the paper's publisher wrote in an editorial, quote, christie is right for these dangerous times and he tells it like it is and he isn't shy about it. since launching his campaign in june, christie has languished in the polls amid a crowded republican field. two nypd officers rescued a hawk after they noticed it in distress in the east river. those officers were on patrol near the brooklyn bridge this morning when they spotted the hawk in the water flapping its wings. they pulled the bird on to the boat. they dried it off with a towel and it remained

perched on the arm of one of the officers before finally flying off. there was an appropriate serenade for musicians celebrating a jazz classic. jazz musicians performed "take the a train" to people on the a train. it was a tribute to billy sprayhorn who composed the song and played famous by duke ellington. a subway car from the era also ran on part of the line. very nice. >> quite the sunday event. the thanksgiving holiday coming to an end this evening. we're going to take a look at traffic as millions of americans return home tonight. >> and some rain will disrupt your work week.

it's one of the busiest travel days of the year. 47 million americans were expected to leave home this weekend and many of them heading back tonight. a live look at the airport. heavy traffic both sides but there's lots of stop and go in the westbound lanes. that's on the right side of your screen. as for air travel ers, good news tonight. there's no delays right now at our local airports. >> anybody

coming back to some different temperatures today. >> a little chillier but there's really not a lot to slow down your drive except for the traffic i just saw. so go ahead and stay a little bit extra. [ laughter ] >> have some more turkey. >> hang out a few more hours. weather will not slow you down it's just cold outside. we don't have to worry about any showers out there. the front has moved through and all it's left behind are a few clouds. looking at the almanac, looking back in the history books, our 30-year average is 49 degrees. record is 69 set back in 1990. tomorrow the son -- tomorrow the sun is up at 6:58. 46 to 48 degrees books. we're looking at a few of the reporting stations that tomorrow everybody is limited below the 50-degree mark and we're seeing temperatures tumble in to the 30s. some spots making it below

north wind not only here today but also another shot of the cool air coming in and that's even lower tomorrow. the radar and satellite pictures, some clouds are lingering here from the front but the rest of the showers are really disappearing. we're expecting sunshine to start the day tomorrow. 46 in the city. then we're watching very carefully what's happening in the ohio and tennessee river valley stretching all the way back in to central plains. omaha getting a piece of the storm as ice. for us it takes its time getting in here. tomorrow we start with the sunshine despite the cold air this year, it's going to feel pretty brisk and chilly. clouds are back monday night in to tuesday. that's when the rain begins at daybreak. continues for the afternoon to be light. then heavy rain tuesday night in to wednesday. computer models are just now generating the potential amounts of rain. we could get up to an inch of rainfall before all is said and done. it will start slow with light rain. sunshine and clouds, brisk.
