a scare for some new yorkers on the streets of brook lifnlt cops called to a scene, and when they get there, chaos. good evening at 11:00. i'm sade baderinwa.

when they got out of their car, they see a gun pointed right at them. and they fired back. >> a.j. ross at the scene as police try to figure out what really happened. a.j. >> reporter: sade, bill, investigators still after very large perimeter of this stretch of avenue b blocked off as they continue to search for a suspect and more clues. as i mentioned one suspect is in custody at this hour. unfortunately no officers or by standers were hurt especially considering this all happened just a block away from an elementary school. police say two narcotics officers were initially called here to east 92nd and avenue b around 6:00 p.m. on a report of shots fired. when the officers arrived and tried to exit their car one of two suspects allegedly pointed a gun at the pair prompting them to return fire. exactly how many shots were discharged is still investigation but fortunately neither officer was injured.

taken into custody but investigators say the other suspect with the gun fled the scene. for the past several hours teams have been aggressively searching this entire area for the remaining suspect in addition to collecting shell casings and other evidence. at this hour both officers were taken to methodist hospital for ten any ties -- tinnitus, which is a loud ringing in the ears. a.j. news. developing now several people hurt including firefighters and several folks out of their homes tonight thanks to staten island. tonight. josh. >> reporter: bill, all this just developed in the last couple of hours. fire started. you can see investigators are inside trying to get to the

the first flames we can show you video of as firefighters were just mopping up this scene. the first flames started in this vacant row home here around 8:30 this evening. firefighters were here in minutes as that blaze started to spread to the adjoining homes where residents were able to get out on their own as firefighters made quick work of the flames. at least four fdny members suffering minor injuries. in the two homes that were occupied people were able to get themselves to safety. in one case, a cat, the family pet, did not survive. the red cross is on the scene trying to help these two families who at least temporarily are homeless. multiple generations, people who grew up in these homes who fear they've lost it all. >> fires are devastating. this is why when we come out here as the red cross they're our priority. so because this is traumatic. i thank god that there were no

but the reality it's devastating. >> reporter: back live you are looking at a fire marshall inside peering through the front, what appears to be the living room of this house. the neighbor tells me this house has actually been vacant for about earlier today he spotted the front door ajar. he has now told investigators about this. they have not told us anything about what they believe would have been the cause or if this is a suspicious fire. the scene is fairly extensive on this block which is still closed. family members are working with the red cross to figure out where they will spend the night. live in the west brighton section of steant island, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. turning now to weather, keep your umbrellas close. the rain not letting up. meteorologist lee goldberg at the weather sphwhiew. sade it's been raining off and

still have another 24 hours to go. it's light rain. not seeing a lot of umbrellas as we're in a lull. 47 degrees, but trying to get milder. visibility is variable. it's lower down the shore. you may have some fog that slows you down tomorrow morning. rainfall amounts average about a third of an inch, as low as .15 in dan bur rather, as high as .9 in toms river. the radar has gone light as of late. patchy drizzle. this area here a little steadier, and then this is your heavier rain for the afternoon hours. watch the futurecast. a little bit more rain for the morning commute but most of it light. a couple of moderate pockets. then it is getting heavier. probably a lot more challenging for the evening commute. so here is what you need to know. a slow morning commute with light rain and fog. the steady rain is likely to develop midday, maybe first north and west, then across the entire area. the rain will taper tomorrow evening.

be near an inch. more on the rain timing and the blustery conditions behind the storm in a few minutes. bill. >> all right, lee. the power of an amber alert tonight saving a three- year-old girl. cops say her father stabbed her mother and then abducted the child. police flooded with calls by those seeing a getaway car leaving the bronx and crossing into new jersey. the girl's picture plastered on facebook. eyewitness news reporter jim dolan with the latest. >> reporter: for police this is the scariest kind of stop. they call at high-risk stop because so much could go wrong. a three-year-old baby in the backseat, the driver accused of a violent crime. he had so little to lose. but take a look at this. it does have a happy ending. just moments ago social service workers came here to bloomfield from the city to bring the baby, who is safe, back to family in the city.

a grizzly one. a 31-year-old mother stabbed repeatedly, her three-year-old daughter kidnapped. within minutes the chase was on. police issued an amber alert that showed up on phones throughout the area. and they released photos of both the girl, three-year-old rebecca valenzuela, and the suspect, her father, a 47-year- old. neighbors were stunned. >> they seem like great parents. they go to church every week. again, he works for the transit system. so it looks like they're a really upstanding citizens. >> reporter: it was new jersey state police who spotted the van on the garden state parkway. now they had to stop a man who clearly had very little to lose. >> he did stop the traffic before the incident was supposed to happen just in case it went wrong but thank god it didn't go wrong. everything went smooth. it was a high-risk stop, and thank god that he went willingly. he didn't put up a fate. >> reporter: or harm the

checked by police. >> ems has already checked her out. thank god for mcdonald's. i got her mcdonald's, she's sitting in my office, watching cartoons, couldn't be happier. who knows what she may or may knost seen. >> reporter: who knows what she saw today but she did spend the entire evening with troopers here. they all became good friends as you can tell. mr. valenzuela now has a lente legal process that will result in charges back in new york. the victim, the mother of the baby sirntion critical condition, but is expected to survive. of course, the little baby is doing fine also. reporting live from bloomfield, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> good to hear jim. police are searching for three sins a possible bias attack in queens. the victim was beaten, robbed, and sexually assaulted by three men shouting anti-gay slurs. it happened in jackson heights yesterday morning. police say the suspects chased a 23-year-old victim for

over the head with a pain and attacked him. he was hospitalized in serious conditions. a local councilman says he worries about the safety of the lgbt community in the area. >> although jackson heights is very tolerant and a good community, unfortunately we've had a number of attacks against lgbt people here in the past. new information about the transgender woman beaten in this same neighborhood sunday. police now say they are no longer investigating that attack as a hate crime but as a domestic assault. the 35-year-old victim is in critical condition. it. also new tonight a school bus in a deadly crash in new jersey. a volkswagen passat crashing into the bus carrying a high school swim team in southampton township. an eyewitness news tells us the passat was trying to pass another vehicle in a no- passing zone. two men in the vw were kid. eight students and one adult on the bus suffered non life threatening injuries.

police are searching for a driver who abandoned a car after crashing it into a store. the car crashed into a building in west brighton. the driver took off on foot after the crash. apartments above the store were evacuated for several hours. one resident who was home at the time described the crash. >> all i hear is like a boom, like the whole floor shake. and i was like, what happened? then i hear that screeching. i tell my mom, and my little brother, they all got scared. >> it's not clear if the driver was injured in the crash. residents above the store are back home. did the chicago police department mishandle their investigation into that racially charged deadly police shooting of a black teenager? tonight that city's top congress, a veteran of the newark and new york police department, fired, amid growing questions about this case. photos from inside a burger king obtained by abc news show an officer looking at

roof while he pursued a suspect. it is all caught on his body cam. police in utah say they were called because the suspect was loitering. one of the officers lost his balance and fell off a roof. the suspect was arrested. also caught on camera a fritteddenning carjacking at gunpoint. police are looking for six men who robbed a man while pumping gaines philadelphia. then they stole his car. one of the suspects pulled a gun on the victim and demanded money while the others went through his pockets. the gunman then drove off while the rest ran away. police later found the victim's vehicle abandoned on the streets in north philly j. a hit-and-run driver on the loose after striking two people waiting for a bins queens, the speeding driver losing control, hitting two men, then crashing into a restaurant in queens village. the driver leaving the crashed car and taking off on fat. the two victims were seriously survive.
