inside. marcos aguilar found out his wife was one of them through a text. >> she said she was inside. that there was a shooting outside shooting. she's locked in in her office. she said i love you and i came over here. >> reporter: she made it out of the building along with others. oo evacuated, guyed by armed police officers on to buss to take them to safety. the latest here from loma linda hospital is they received five adult patients two now listed in critical but stable condition. two listed in fair and one at this point is still being assessed. also, we're told that they received a bomb threat early in the afternoon that was cleared about an hour later. but still, this hospital is operating on a heightened sense of alert and they have several police officers that will be here throughout the night. kayna whitworth, abc news, san bernardino. >> tense times in southern california. house speaker paul ryan is among those reacting to the massacre

>> at his first capital christmas tree lighting, the wisconsin republican called pore a moment of silence for the victims. just a day earlier at a planned parenthood clinic, ryan urged con griz to prioritize mental health reform. >> among the many presidential candidates expressing think for the victims was donald trump. he began his rally last night with a moment of silence. he also thanked law enforcement for their efforts saying they don't get enough credit for their work. he added it's a job most people including him don't want to do. >> the victims of the rampage were honored last night before professional sports nents southern california. >> would you please join us as we on a moment of silence for those who lost their lives. >> the scene at the staples center, some 60 miles to the east of where the rampage took place before the l.a. clippers tipped off against indiana.

held before the anaheim ducks game. >> and i want to remind you to stay with abc news as we cover all the developments from san bernardino later this half hour. how gun violence is taking its toll more than ever across the country. we have another breaking story at this hour, concerning the secret service. a congressional investigation out this morning revealed several previously unknown security breaches including one at the white house. it says two people managed to breach the perimeter of the white house complex back in february of this year simply by walking in unnoticed. the report details an unauthorized person approaching president obama at a dinner event and investigators say security at vice president joe biden's home in delaware was breached when four people on a fishing trip were able to walk into his backyard noticed when neighbors called the secret service. investigators call the secret service "an agency in crisis" and the panel recommends their

back to concentrate on protection. two u.s. army pilots have been killed in a helicopter crash in rural tennessee. authorities say the two pilots from the 101st airborne division were flying a two-seat apache helicopter when the chopper went down 12 miles south of fort campbell. the cause is under investigation. overseas, britain launched its first air strikes against isis targets in syria. the attacks followed an emotional debate in the british parliament which led to the air strikes being approved. the german parliament also expected to approve a military commitment against isis including 100 troops in a support role. a ruling is expected from a top appeals court in south african about oscar pistorius. the question, the court is deciding is whether the manslaughter verdict against him should be overturned. he was found guilty in the death of his girlfriendny 2013. if his conviction is changed to

the first thing i did was ran to safety. the shooting kept on going for about 45 seconds to a minute. it was a constant shoot-out. >> reporter: the suspect's suv riddled with bullet holes. two dead. 28-year-old syed farook and 27-year-old tashfeen malik. the chase was on. witnesses say the suspects exchanged gunfire with police before crashing. the neighborhood erupting in a barrage of bullets. >> oh, my gosh. >> dozens of police cars and all these men with guns were running behind me with guns drawn. i'm in the middle of it. and then more shots start fire. so big thunder. this time i'm really close. >> we were watching tv and hear gun fires left and right. and we -- my grandmother says go hide in the bathtub. go hide.

three were killed at a planned parenthood clinic last saturday, ten killed in october at an oregon college, nine massacred in a church in june. five pooh gunned down in chattanooga in july. the potential motives ranged from racism to politics to terrorism. cases in small and large cities, urban and rural areas. there have been at least 56 mass shootings so far in 2015 where at least three people have died, an average of more than one a week. the trend alarming. federal agents say the number of active shooter incidents have years. across this country, police officials are worried that this is the new normal. a deadly new normal. york. people wonder does having stronger gun laws headache a difference? it was the law center to prevent gun violence trying to fight to get more legislation on gun control found the state of california was one of the highest scorers when came to

bernardino, california. the search for a motive does continue at this hour after the deadliest mass shooting on u.s. soil since sandy hook. >> at least 14 people were killed and 1 wounded in the bloody rampage at a social services center. >> two suspects are dead a man and woman killed in a fierce gun battle with police after a high speed chase. one identified assay syed farook. brandi hitt leads off coverage live from san bernardino. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there are three very active police scenes here in san bernardino at this hour. we are where it all began where the shooting spree started just a few minutes ago, police have now identified both of the suspected gunmen as a young couple. they were both armed with assault rifles and handguns. and one of them opened fire on

it ended as it began in a hail of gunfire captured on this cell phone video. four hours of terror in san bernardino after a gunman stormed an office building killing 14 people. the final confrontation on a neighborhood street. a dark suv riddled with bullets. a person with a gunshot down feet away, another dead inside. >> of the suspects that are dead at the scene, one is a male. one is a female. they are both armed with assault rifles. they're both armed with handguns. >> reporter: abc news confirmed one of the suspects is syed farook. >> why would he do something like this? i have absolutely no idea. i am in shock myself. >> reporter: law enforcement tracked down the suspects just two miles from the initial attack at the inland regional center. >> multiple shots that were fired. we're getting a suspect last seen wearing a black ski mask, all black clothing carrying a shotgun.

a barrage of gunfire. the people working there called their families. >> she was scared and she said i just want to tell you that i love you. she called us from in the hospital but she's doing better. she's alive. >> i have a suspect dressed in camo, mask, helmet, kevlar. >> reporter: investigators say the shooters targeted a workshop and training event inside the center. the bomb squad seth investigating a suspicious device authorities believe could be an explosive. in fact, in the last few hours, we've been hearing officers detonating potential explosives inside that building. still a very active scene. they want to make sure nothing has been left behind that could hurt anyone. we've learned the group holding that meeting behind me was the san bernardino county public health department. the police department just announcing that syed farook was an environmental specialist there. and police and several witnesses

then left. police say some said he was angry. roughly 30 minutes before the shooting began. reporting live in san bernardino, brandi hitt, abc news, kendis and reena? >> before you go, do we know anything further about a motive? is this potentially isis inspire sthd can we go that far at this hour? >> that's pretty far to go according to officers. they're not ruling it out but still have a lot to investigate. was this an angry employee firing back at colleagues or more to it? we do know tashfeen malik and syed farook both fairly young were either in a relationship as far as a fiance or they were possibly married. officers don't know but know they were together. they were a couple. and officers also originally thought they were searchinging for three suspects. they said they believe now there were only two shooters and they believe both of those shooters

their phones, their computers, social media footprint is being vacuum cleaned. obviously there's a possibility of terrorism. there are a lot of different scenarios here. it could be terrorism, both. till they know, they won't be making any final determination. last week the fbi director and attorney general had a very rare joint appearance together in which they talked about the concern that people here who might thinkize with isis for whatever reason would do some sort of copycat attack. that is part of the environment that's being looked at. also, we've seen such a spate of mass shootings this year. i think we calculated that this year alone, 56 case afc mass shootings where three or more people have been killed. the most telling thing we know is what they were wearing and carrying. they were wearing tactical gear. they also had assault style rifles and handguns.

these were people who came to kill. and that is deeply concerning and even though this was a horrific day, law enforcement is breathing a sigh of relief in that they got two suspects because imagine if those people were still on loose with no suspects. in the mass shootings we've seen at least in the last couple years, we just haven't seen women involved. that's something that we'll be closely looking at and analyzes. at this point, they want to know who that woman is and who were her associates. what is her connection to the other male suspect who is also so many questions. >> pierre, thank you so much. president obama was giving an interview when he was received word about the rampage in california. >> here's what he told cbs news. >> fbi is on the ground offering assistance to local officials as had he need it. it does appear that there are going to be some casualties and

emmanuel is also resisting the call by illinois illinois attorney general for a justice department probe saying the fbi and u.s. attorney's office already have an ongoing investigation. >> let's turn toward the weather because parts of the southeast are seeing severe flooding. in western north carolina, a campground flooded faster than usual. individuals had to haul all vehicles to high ground. one man and his puppy were rescued from a trailer. several area roads are also closed at this hour. there was significant flooding in northwest georgia with some residents evacuated. several roads washed out or blocked by mud slides isolating residents and some cools were closed, as well. the southeast gets a reprieve, but the northwest is in for severe storms yet again. here's paul williams at accuweather. good morning. >> thanks. we're looking at a strong push

recapping our top story, that horrific scene in san bernardino, california. at least two the shooters opening fire on workers at a center for the disabled killing 14 and injuring 17 others. as terrified employees left the building with their hands in the air, others hid in offices till police arrived hours later. two suspects were killed in a shoot-out with police. tashfeen malik and syed farook identified. there's still no word upon a

within the last hour, we've heard three explosions. we were told they would be controlled explosions because they were concerned the couple may have left some sort of improvised explosives behind possibly. they've been going through the building and want to make sure it's deemed safe as the investigation continues. >> brandi, even at this early hour and several hours after this rampage took place, there are still several scenes right now police are investigating. what are they doing right now? >> reporter: this is one of three major police scenes we are in. obviously, this is where it all started with the shooting spree. when the shoot-out with authorities happened, it was only about two miles from where we are. that's another active scene. you saw that suv just riddled with bullets. officers surrounding it, making sure there weren't any suspects that were still at large. they originally thought there may be three gunmen. now officers confirmed they

head. >> we are in pursuit of the suspect vehicle. we've got shots fired out the back window. >> our affiliate kabc on the scene hovering above this black suv that the authorities had been searching for for three hours. >> we've got multiple shots that were fired. >> reporter: windows blown out. the front door ajar and police crouching at a safe distance away. but this was the shoot-out our cameras missed that this neighbor captured on his phone. [ gunshots ] >> what sounds like fireworks is a fire fight. a body lying in the street feet away, that black suv riddled with bullets. one suspect still inside. as police run into position, single file up across the lawn. five minutes later, two armored vehicles approach the suv from both sides. >> you basically box a person in. so with the car in the front, a car in the back and many times one on the side, there's no place for the car to go. >> reporter: followed by a
