key developments tonight. as you said the associated press now reporting that the mastermind of all of this used social media to communicate with known extremists that were already being watched by the fbi. and yes, there was that staggering cash of firepower recovered in an overnight rig. when they broke down the door of the home officers in heavy armor were ready for anything. investigators say syed farook had yesterday's massacre carefully planned. but they found an arsenal big enough to do even more. the officers who stopped the suv, killing farook and his accomplice, are being hailed here in southern california as heroes. >> clearly they were equipped, and they could have continued to do another attack. we intercepted them before that happened obviously. >> reporter: inside the home police uncovered a virtual bomb factory with hundreds of tools.

and over 5,000 rounds of ammunition. they have uncovered no obvious note or manifesto, but a series of digital files have yet to be thoroughly searched. >> the digital media is incredibly important because we are trying to determine the motive. we do not yet know the motive. we cannot rule anything out at this point. >> reporter: farook was an american citizen and lived an otherwise unremarkable life here as a local restaurant history. as investigators move quickly to determine the motive, a canvas of hospitals turned up more of the wounded, raising the number to 21, with some still in critical condition. are heart stopping. >> he felt his first shot on his leg, and then he ended up sustaining another shot on the shoulder. he got under the table, and according to kevin, the gunman came back and shot him again.

calls, one to his wife and one to his father, and to both of them he said that he had been shot, that he was going to be okay, and that he loved them. >> reporter: just amazing. back live, the crime scene. to recap, still no obvious motive but investigators are putting several of the suspects acomputer fails onto a plane to be taken to the fbi's lab in washington for further analysis. analysis that is being fast- tracked tonight. live tonight in san bernardino, california, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> all of the victims in the massacre have now been positively identified. police are expected to release their names soon. a safety with the new york giants, nat berhe treated that one of his cousins is among the 14 killed. we have already learned the identity of two other victims. michael wetzel was in a

stormed in. then a health worker named nick falacino. before moving to the west coast he worked in cape may, new jersey. >> it wasn't until early this morning that may oldest son called and let me know he had heard from nick's current wife jennifer about -- she had called to let him know he hadn't survived. >> he was a good person. i loved my father. >> he always wanted to use his environmental science degree to help people. we are learning much more about couple who committed this horrific massacre. syed farook used social media. his wife, mallic, came to the

ma she may very well be the radical laying force in this couple simply because of the fact that muslims in this country are prospering is not an inoculation against radicalization. >> again, we don't know for sure, however, quite yet. farook met his wife through an on-line dating muslim site. both had family in pakistan. the deadliest mass shooting since the one at sandy hook elementary where 26 people were killed. there have been hundreds of mass shoot this is year in the u.s. but the fbi counts just five of them as mass deadly shootings. just last friday three people were killed when a gunman opened fire inside a planned parenthood clinic in colorado. ten people were killed in a mass shooting two months ago at a community college in in july, five people were killed with a gunman opened fire at two military centers in chattanooga, tennessee. a month earlier nine people

inside an historic church in charleston, south carolina when police say the gunmen joined church members for bible study and then started shooting them. after each of these attacks, there have been talks of tougher gun laws, but will anything change this time? political reporter dave evans continues our coverage. he is here with more. >> i think many democrats believe that america has now reached a tipping point with so many shootings lately but many thought the shootings in newtown with 26 victims so many young children, that would have been the catalyst for change, but it wasn't. the nra is incredibly powerful. republicans offer new tougher gun laws won't stop people intent on committing a massacre. right as the investigation was getting underway in california the president was already talking about gun control. >> we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world. >> reporter: and a day later a

after all, the fbi on black friday reported the biggest number of firearms ever sold in one day, 185,000 guns. >> we're going to have to search ourselves as a society to make sure that we can take basic steps that would make it harder, not impossible, but harder for individuals to get access to weapons. >> reporter: but instead of gun control, republicans are offering a familiar refrain today, to simply keep victims in their thoughts and prayers. >> please keep the victims and their families in your prayers right now. >> reporter: the daily news, though, responding god isn't fixing them. and connecticut's chris murphy angrily tweeted, your thoughts should be about steps to take to stop this carnage. your prayers should be for forgiveness if you do nothing again. >> we will win these fights. we don't win today, we'll win next month or the month after that or the month after that. the worst thing we can do is do nothing.

this time it's different, that so many shootings lately have aroused the american conscience, that it is time to enact tougher gun laws. >> the next president of the united states, senator ted cruz. >> reporter: but at a president's forum today a clear sign republicans aren't close at all to the same pages democrats are object. they point out the guns used in the massacre were purchased legally. >> this is not about gun control. if you think that shooting in california is about gun control then you don't understand what's going on in the world. >> reporter: democrats in the senate tonight are pushing several different gun control amendments. late today one of them would have barred gun purchases by people who are on the government's terror watch list. that bill, though, sponsored by democrats failed by a vote bill. >> stay with abc7ny for

massacre in san bernardino. n.j. burkett is posting special reports on all of our social media platforms. coming up, more on world news tonight. we do have new information on a breaking story we have been following out of brooklyn. three people shot on the street. it happened in east flat bush. we have learned the victims are two men and a woman, all three taken to area hospitals. they are in critical condition. we will bring you new details as they become available. protests on this first anniversary of the stated enisland grand jury's decision not to indict an officer in the eric garner death. it's all happening at grace' mansion -- gracie mansion. >> reporter: 10, 15 minutes ago, the group of protesters, there were 40 people here, but 20 of them actually walked onto east avenue -- east end

let me show you video we took a few minutes ago. the officers warned them to clear the intersection. the protesters refused. they knelt down on their knees. they were chanting "i can't breathe" and other slogans. it the officers then started arresting the protesters. i just spoke with a captain a few minutes ago. he said they are, in fact, under arrest for disorderly conduct for blocking this intersection. these protesters are here in front of gracie mansion. they're here because they're trying to put pressure on mayor bill de blasio, essential calling him out for what they say is a lack of accountability on the part of the city when it comes to the eric garner case. in particular, they want officer daniel pantaleo fired. they still can't believe that he is working for the nypd. back in december 2014 a grand jury decided not to indict officer pantaleo. that sparked a call for protests here and in other

pantaleo was the officer that put eric garner in an apparent chokehold during an arrest. the medical examiner did rule garner's death a homicide. back here live again, the protesters came here to -- in front of gracie mansion to put pressure on the mayor. it ended in about 20 arrests. we'll have more coming up on eyewitness news at 11:00. it live on the upper east side, kemberly richardson, eyewitness news. >> kimberly, thank awe. what good is a regulation if it's not enforced and if people don't know about it? the death of 12 new yorkers last summer from legionnaires' disease caused by contaminated cooling towers. the state now requires building owners to register their towers but that's coming up short. way short. here's long island reporter kristin phillips. >> reporter: well, bill, property owners had until september 16th to register their cooling towers with the state. i spoke with many property owners here on long island and

registered because they say they weren't aware of the regulation. they didn't want to go on camera but told me they were never notified by the state department of health. under the new york state department of health regulation, registered cooling towers are listed on the department's website. eyewitness news researched the on-line database and found that many properties are missing. for example, this cooling tower it at a hotel, on street level, in a park lot, does not appear in the database. the state department of health acknowledged that cooling towers may be missing from the on-line registry because they're relying on property owners to come forward on their own and reg steer. spokesperson for the health department told eyewitness news to raise awareness of the requirement the department has undertaken a multifaceted outreach campaign consisting

to a number of stakeholder groups, including professional organizations and owner associations. >> it falls to the state to follow up and implement a policy. >> reporter: the government watchdog group says it's clear this regulation is falling short. >> to move forward with a new policy and not be able to see any evidence of strong implementation, have the department of health not even know how many properties with cooling towers we're looking at and what their policy is for following up on those who don't comply, it raises serious questions about the effectiveness of this policy. >> reporter: the health department says failure to comply with the regulation could result in civil and even criminal penalties. of course, the question becomes can property owners be held responsible for regulation that they weren't made aware of. we reached out to the governor's office about all of this. our calls were not returned. live in melville, kristin

>> kristin, thank you. we want to return to our breaking news, two men, one woman shot in the east flat bush section. >> reporter: bill, we have learned that all three are now in critical condition at near by hospitals. if you take a look here you can see investigators on the scene. a near by store owner says she heard multiple shots fired earlier this evening. you can see investigators combing through evidence there. this is 91st street and clarkson avenue in the east flat bush section of brooklyn. it happened around 5:10. police say two men and one woman were shot, a man and woman were taken to kings county hospital, the other man taken to brookdale hospital. people in this neighborhood now gathering around, a lot of them say they were on their way home from work when this was happening. also tonight, asking questions, saying they want to understand exactly what transpired here, and they just

another shooting has now taken place in their neighborhood. live in brooklyn, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. new information on an investigation into a deadly explosion in brooklyn. authorities now say the fire was intentionally set by one of the women who died in the blast. s fdny officials say a manpowerred gasoline that triggered a blast, in the a natural gas leak. figueroa was on the brink of being evicted from her apartment. as we continue with eyewitness news at 6:00, it's a very busy thursday night. caught on tape, a woman accused of stealing toys from a collection bin for sick and needy kids. >> what's really surprising is where that bin is located. i'm meteorologist lee goldberg.

actually catch a crime occurring inside a police department. >> reporter: howard had gone to the station with a friend, a bail bondsman who had paperwork to fill out. over a 20-minute period, the suspect can be seen rummaging through the bin and removing items until she is confronted. she told police that she thought the toys were for anyone to take. police say they didn't believe her and add, if she were truly in need, all she needed to do was ask. >> if she had buzzed the fronted desk and asked, can i take some toys for my grandkids, whatever, that's what they're there for. the point is we can't have people stealing from our bin. >> reporter: police say the items had a value of over $300, enough for a larceny charge. meantime the department says the grinch-like episode won't stop its 20-year tradition of collecting toys for needy and sick kids. in fairfield, marcus solis, eyewitness news.

a little windy? >> a little windy right now. my biggest challenge, how warm is it going to be for the first week of december. earlier the gusts were blowing over 35 on the bridges. they will continue to diminish slowly butts still brisk. you need the heavy coat. no doubt. high of 54. felt more like 43. now after we got that half i remember of rainfall in the past couple of days we have no rainfall in sight. winds subside tonight. fantastic first weekend. then a close call with a possible coastal storm next week. it's way off. maybe tuesday of neck week. right now our numbers generally in the 40s. over the next seven hours notice the big difference in wind. it just dies off, but it all happens very slowly. a lot of sunshine tomorrow, a few fair weather clouds, wind gusts maybe 10 to 15. just a bries at times. we had a couple of sprinkle, even flurries in the catskills. they have since dried out.
