terror probe. investigators are scram bling to figure out what triggered the mass shooting in san bernardino as attention shifts to the mysterious mother turned murderer. >> a serial robber on long island making a habit of tying up workers, ripping off stores, then running off with the loot. good evening. i'm sandra bookman. >> and i'm joe torres. we begin with new developments in the mass shooting in san bernardino. an old neighbor of one of the san bernardino shooters is believed to have

rifles used in wednesday's massacre. overnight authorities raided the riverside, california home of inrico, marquez. he lived next door to an old address of syed farook. >> reporter: san bernardino on edge. overnight police evacuated a ups facility and called in the bomb squad to investigate a package addressed it turned out to be safe and posed no threat. this comes as the fbi announced the mass shooting is now being investigated as an act of terrorism. >> we're spending a tremendous amount of time as you might imagine over the last 48 hours trying to understand the motives of these killers and trying to understand every detail of their lives. >> reporter: much of the attention in the investigation now focuses on tashfeen malik. the married mom turned shooter in the wednesday massacre that left 14 dead and 21 wounded. she posted a pledge of allegiance to isis leader al-baghdadi on facebook while the

inspired by isis but the terror group apparently did not direct or order the attack. it may be a case of self-radicalization, a possibility that's left family members baffled. >> he was so happy with her. how could he he leave his only child? how could the mother do this? >> reporter: the neighbor is also left wondering. >> it was like they were anonymous to all of us. it's really weird. >> one tool is no longer available to investigators trying to learn more about the couple. the u.s. government's ability to review and analyze five years worth of telephone records ended just four days before the attack when the national security agency's controversial mass surveillance program was formally shut down. on this saturday after that mass shooting in california, activists, politicians, and newspapers are calling attention to the fierce debate over gun control. that part of the story, eyewitness news reporter

>> the debate over gun control has been reignited in the wake of the shooting of san bernardino. president obama, spike lee, and new york times, to donald trump and ted cruz, national voices on both sides of the debate are weighing in and they're not mincing words. >> right now people on the no fly list can walk in to a store and buy a gun. that's insane. if you're too dangerous to board a plane, you're too dangerous by definition to buy a gun. >> reporter: president barack obama in his weekly address calling on congress to close what he calls loopholes in the gun control laws. the president's call for action saturday being joined by the new york times. the paper a record for the first time in 95 years placing an editorial on its front page, calling it a moral outrage and national disgrace that civilians can legally purchase weapons designed to kill people with speed and efficiency. director spike lee

in chicago gunned down because of his father's alleged gang ties. >> we can't be silenced when a 9-year-old is led in to an alley and executed. >> reporter: opponents of gun control though are firing back, saying no law could have prevented these tragedies, adding the answer to the problem, more guns in the hands of responsible gun owners. at a shooting range in iowa, republican presidential candidate ted cruz yesterday calling for arming citizens. >> you don't stop bad guys by taking away our guns. you stop bad guys by using our guns. >> reporter: gop frontrunner donald trump at a rally in north carolina friday night saying greater access to guns is a solution. >> if the people in paris or the people in california, if you had a couple of folks in there with guns, the dead people would be the other guys. >> meanwhile the washington post is taking a shot at the new york times saying swing voters don't read the times and the

editorial is another example of liberal media bias agenda. cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. tomorrow morning on up close, reverend al sharpton sits down with eyewitness news anchor bill ritter to talk about his newest campaign against gun violence. that's sunday morning at 11:00 here on channel 7. authorities are questioning the person who first bought the two high powered semiautomatic weapons used in the attack and then sold them or turned them over to farook. abc's brian ross is looking in to that. >> we know they raided overnight this home which was father. farook actually lived the once. a former neighbor actually provided the rifles, bought them legally, but did provide them to farook. best we know, he was not involved in any way in this attack. >> stay with eyewitness news and abc news for the latest on bernardino. you can also find

the clock at our website, abc7ny. police in nin surrendered following a shooting and four-hour hostage situation at a motorcycle shop. that man went in to the shop this morning and opened fire following a dispute with an owner. he then took hostages as police moved in. >> this was a large evacuation and we had to evacuate homes and make the scene safe for many of the residents in the area. >> about a half dozen police agencies were eventually involved. one police officer was hurt. we're told not seriously. another person was injured as well. no word on that person's condition. police in long island are trying to track down a robber. they say the armed thief has been tying up employees before making off with the valuables in those stores.

huntington station, the scene of the latest robbery. >> investigators say this tanning salon targeted friday is just the latest in a disturbing crime spree that now has police and area businesses on high alert. an armed man with the gun tied up two women in this salon and got away with everything in a cash register. police say this is the same suspect and m.o. in 13 long island robberies. >> obviously it's a very traumatic event for these victims. >> reporter: it was no day at the beach for these two female employees tetaning salon who were completely blindsided by a robber. he tied them up and with no other customers inside managed to clear out the register before slipping away. >> he was armed with a black handgun. he restrained the individuals in the store and he

>> reporter: it was a cold and calculated crime pattern investigators have connected to at least a dozen other robberies. at stores throughout nassau and suffolk county stretching back to the summer. several women's clothing stores have been targeted and a couple weeks ago this pier one was hit in the same manner with customers forced to the back of the store and restrained. >> august was the first robbery. now we're in december. this is obviously something the suffolk county police department and nassau county police department is making a top priority. >> reporter: this photo taken from surveillance video the best image the police have of the suspect for now. he typically wears a hat, hoodie, or scarf to conceal his face and is described as medium build. >> we'll be doing enhanced patrols, both visible and not so

hopefully catch this perpetrator in the act. >> now a $5,000 reward is being offer today any information that leads to an arrest. 1-800-220-tips. aj ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. a bronx woman accused of killing a pregnant woman and removing the baby from her womb has been arraigned from a hospital room. 22-year-old ashley wade pleaded not guilty to the charges including murder, manslaughter, and weapons possession. the prosecutors say she stabbed angelique sutton and cut out the child last month. wade is being held without bail and ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. coming up on eyewitness news, resignation rescinded. a new jersey councilwoman initially quits over the naming of the tree lighting. why she suddenly changed her mind. >> from second thought to second chances.

after a decision she didn't like. the council voted to officially change the holiday tree lighting to a christmas tree lighting. >> fundamentally i believe it should be called the holiday tree. >> it's just bringing back the basics. it's a christmas tree. okay? >> despite the disagreement, she rescinded her resignation. they agree the committee will take a look at the issue. people with low level offenses with warrants got a chance to clear their names today. the brooklyn district attorney held his latest begin again event at mount lebanon baptist church in bedford stuyvesant. anyone with an open summons with a minor crime could have their warrant vacated. people in new york city now have more opportunities to drop off old electronics which can't be tossed out with household garbage. the city is expanding its e recycling program.

very special day for members of the eyewitness news team and their families. wabc children's holiday party was this afternoon. there were games and prizes, art projects, face painting, lots of food. that's every day in the news room, right? and of course there was an appearance by the big man himself. santa stopped by to meet the kids and share some holiday cheer with us. there was also a collection for toys for tots to help all families in our area enjoy the season of giving. >> i think we'd like to have one of those big hammers.
