>> reporter: i am told, sandra, he is not going to make a major tonight. in the immediate aftermath, he talked about the various gun background checks, stopping those on the no-fly list from being able to buy weapons. i think he'll mention that provision, but this will not be a particularly political speech. this is going to be about just the facts, what we have learned about this investigation in san bernardino, what we know about the threat, what the government is doing to deal with home grown isis-inspired terrorists, and what more needs to be done. part of that, a little bit of that will be gun control. you'll hear more about what's being done on the visa waiver program, to be sure those, those who have been to syria, who have been inspired by isis can't get into this country through the visa waiver program by going through europe. >> one last question, jonathan, will there be an overall plan for terrorism in terms of how

ill from buying guns. they say it infringed on the 2nd amendment. schumer says that loophole has to close. >> there is a group in congress who just won't listen. they won't protect these men and women behind me or the millions of other americans from the new danger we face, which is terrorism here. >> under current law, someone deemed too dangerous to fly on a plane can legally by a gun. senator schumer now wants a second vote in the senate. now, to some of the other news we're following tonight, raging flames hit a construction site in queens for a second time. the latest in what police are calling a string of arsons. right now, investigators have linked five fires in forest hills. two other suspicious fires are also under investigation. eyewitness news reporter kimberly richardson is in forest hills this evening. >> reporter: sandra, tonight

fear and anxiety in this community, as police and fire marshals are out here, investigating yet another suspicious fire. but for the first time, a picture of someone, a possible link to all of this. police want you to know if you recognize this man. take a look at this picture. it was taken on 69th road where this morning's blaze was set. witnesses tell us a man was spotted earlier in the day roaming the neighborhood on his motorcycle. this picture was taken by someone clearly taking attention. today, a fifth suspicious fire at a home under construction here in forest hills, since november 8. it started around 12:30 this morning. the family who owns the property wasn't here. they had planned to move in by the end of february. the owner is a rabbi. today, he got together with other religious leaders in this community. they say this pattern has reached, quote, a serious level, that they want the nypd to step up patrols. all of the homes that have been

authorities say at this point, whoever is setting these fires does not seem to be motivated by antisemitism. rather, opposition to the extensive renovations going on at these homes. now, i spoke with one young man who lives right next door to the home that was destroyed this morning. >> we need to catch the guy who is doing this before people actually get hurt. i mean, who knows. all of these houses under construction. where is he going next, to the houses where people are living? and people are hurt. especially my little niece and nephew, i don't want them to experience. >> reporter: jonathan's little niece and nephew, his whole family was asleep when the fire broke out. you'll hear from him at 6:00 what he had to do to get everybody out of the home. also, you'll hear from the on fire. this is the second time this

what's next for him? for now, live in forest hills, kimberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. a three-alarm fire gutted add two-story building in benson hurst this morning, under the elevated subway tracks in brooklyn. authorities rerouted service on the d-line to the n-line most of the day. that caused delays for straphangers. investigators have been on the scene trying to assess the damage to the tracks. prosecutors in new jersey say a man was killed while victim. police say 26-year-old troy brandon was coming to the aid of a person who was being attacked in jersey city last night. he was stabbed in the torso and time later. the victim of the original attack was also injured. police are searching for the attacker. coming up on eyewitness news at 5:00, a battle to protect the heroes of 9/11.

. remarkable news tonight from former president jimmy carter. he says he is now cancer-free. carter, who is 91 years old, made the announcement this morning while teaching sunday school at a church in georgia. mr. carter said he got a scan this week and doctors said there is no sign of brain cancer. he revealed in august that doctors found four small melanoma lesions on his brain. 911 first responders are calling on congress to pass an act that provides medical coverage for those injured in the wake of the terror attacks back on september 11 in 2001. lawmakers joined members of the fdny, other emergency crews and civilians sickened by toxins at the ground zero location. congress allowed the program to expire in september. at today's rally, new york's representatives said the act should be added to a bill that must pass by the end of next week.

shooting in california and last month's terrorist attack in paris. investigators in queens are looking for one man believed to be behind a string of arsons, the latest just last night. so far, police have linked five suspicious fires in forest hills. good evening. i'm joe torres. >> and i'm sandra bookman. the search is on for a group of young people who preyed upon a teenager with disabilities. >> police are hoping you'll recognize the group caught on surveillance camera, roughing up the victim and stealing his cell phone. eyewitness news spoke with the man about how it's an eyewitness news exclusive. >> reporter: well, joe and sandra, 1-year-old carlos eyeman says it was last month outside this dunkin' donuts in port richmond when a group of men robbed him. he thought they were panhandlers.

one man and one woman approached simon and asked for money, but when he said he didn't have any, things turned hostile. they tried to go through his pockets and then a fourth individual ran up behind him and snatched his cell phone, which he had laid on a ledge next to him. he realized what was going o he says he noticed before the robbery, all four of them together, but when he got back to the dunkin' donuts, the other three demanded money again, claiming they tried to help him get his phone back and that's when things turned physical. >> they keep saying no, surrounding me, and pushing me around and tried to go through my pockets. they tried to drop me to the floor, but thankfully i had good leg strength. >> reporter: simon managed to fend them off. after all of that, he is taking the high road, saying he is not angry at them. police are looking into whether the same group robbed the 14- year-old boy of a small amount

as for simon, he has not been yet. stephan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you very much. a huge explosion killed a governor of yemen's aiden province and six of his security officials say the governor was traveling to his office when the explosion struck his convoy. an isis afilliate has claimed statement. the bomb was in a parked car along the convoy's route. isis claimed responsibility, in fact, for several bombings in yemen this year. authorities in indonesia are investigating a deadly train collision in the country's capital. 18 people were killed and at least six injured when the train slammed into a mini bus in jakarta. most of the victims were on that bus. police say it appears the driver ignored the warning signals and drove onto the tracks. a shocking scene, shaking up south beach in florida.

police and a bank robbery suspect is caught on camera. abc's marci gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: this cell phone video shot by a bystander captures the moment miami beach police opened fire, killing an attempted bank robbery suspect armed with a barber's razor. >> he was challenged by the officers in the street and at some point during that confrontation, he did raise his hand with a straight edge razor in it and he was shot. >> reporter: you can see here just before the first shot, the shirtless suspect places one hand on the police cruiser, the other raising up that razor. in a different image, you see the filament of another officer's stun gun fired at the exact moment of the deadly gunshot. miami-dade county police are investigating the shooting that ended the unidentified man's alleged spree, which he began by walking into a bank of america, handing this note to a

this is video of freeman safely arriving in texas, after his private plane skidded off a runway in mississippi. a tire blew out as the plane was taking off, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing. freeman released a statement, saying they landed safely without a scratch, but the same can't be said for the plane. caitlyn jenner now faces a lawsuit after her involvement in a deadly crash. another family involved in the february crash is suing jenner, saying they were seriously hurt when they hit a car pushed into traffic by jenner's suv. the woman in the other car was killed. peter wolf says along with physical injuries, the emotional effects of his involvement in the deadly crash caused distress and suffering. jenner also faces lawsuits from the family of the woman killed and another driver. there's no defeating one movie at the box office. coming up, the hunger games

show at the same time. the 21-year-old man climbed a construction crane in australia early this morning. he then performed death-defying acrobatics without a net, as police tried to talk him down. the man stayed up there for six and a half hours before coming down, and he still put up a bit of a fight as police led him away. >> see what kind of moves he'll be able to do in a jail cell. i think that's where he's going next! the fact there's a little bit of wind will probably preclude much fog from developing, like last night, especially areas well north and west of the city. next seven hours, looking like temperatures falling gradually, about a degree or so every hour, down to 45 by 10:00 p.m. 44 by midnight. there is a little patch of clouds moving over the area, so we call it mostly cloudy during the evening, then trending back to partly cloudy as we head toward after midnight. winds coming in from the south and southwest about 4 to 8 miles per hour. in the 50s region-wide. except for poughkeepsie, only up to 45. still above average for the mid- hudson valley for this time of year. 38 at middletown. it will be one of those nights like last night where the suburbs get quite a bit colder than the city. some of these areas well north and west, if it clears out later tonight, will get down into the middle 20s. you're at 49 right now in trenton. 45 in islip. 51 at bridgeport.

during the next several days is this area of low pressure. northern illinois right now, moving rapidly off to the east and be off of the east coast during the day on tuesday. in the meantime, no weather worries, right through midday tomorrow on the future cast here. then watch our cloud cover increase as we head into the day on tuesday, as the storm well offshore. we won't get any real rainfall city. there could be a shower over island. that would be about it. only effect right around the tri-state area is an increase in the cloud cover. should begin to break a little bit by later on in the day. we'll see some brightening. lows tonight, meantime, down to 41 in the park. much colder in the northwestern suburbs. tomorrow, like today, highs well into the 50s. again, down to 41 tonight. 20s north and west. here's your accuweather seven- day forecast. mild again tomorrow, 53. clouds on tuesday, with that

an eyewitness news exclusive, the outbreak of legionnaires disease in the bronx killed 12 people last year and created fear across the city. >> all cooling towers are required to be registered with the state. the deadline was three months ago. as kristen thorn found, many have not done so. >> reporter: under the new york state department of health regulation, registered cooling towers are listed on the department's website. eyewitness news researched the online database and found many properties are missing. for example, this cooling tower at a hotel on street level in a parking lot does not appear in the database. i spoke with the owners of many cooling towers here on long island and in queens who tell me they are not registered because they weren't aware of the regulation. they didn't want to appear on camera, but told me they were never notified by the state department of health.

acknowledged that cooling towers may be missing from the online registry, because they are relying on property owners to come forward on their own and register. a spokesperson for the health department told eyewitness news to raise awareness of the requirements the department has undertaken a multifaceted outreach campaign, consisting of meetings and presentations to a number of stake holder groups, including professional organizations and owner associations. >> it's up to the state to follow up and implement a policy. >> reporter: the government watch dog group citizens union says it's clear this regulation is falling short. >> to move forward with a new policy and not to be able to see any evidence of implementation and have the department of health not even know how many properties with cooling towers we're looking at and what their policy is for following up on those who don't comply, it raises serious questions about the
