at the brooklyn botanic garden, the holiday display surrounded by blooming flowers and even some busy bees. our own meteorologist lea lee busy himself. >> actually, not that busy. right now. how often do you see temperatures climb in december? a lot of crowds out here on the west side. manhattan. a pretty sunset. our temperatures are around 60 degrees. up one last hour. look at the highs. we can update central park to 61. so 17 degrees above average, and 20 degrees above average over the weekend. last year on this date it was 38 with a trace of snow in the morning hours. right now our temperatures are generally in the mid-50s. picked up. so i would say you go with the the evening hours.

temperatures in the mid-60s on saturday, and record highs is what we're forecasting sunday despite the fact that we will have limited sunshine on sunday. all 11 december days above average, and a third of the way through the month and we're on pace for the warmest december. 60s for the next three days. record highs on sunday. and finally, a blast of winter chill is about a week away. but until then it's all about above-normal temperatures. we'll also tell you about a rainstorm next week. rob, back to you. >> remember you can check the temperatures whenever you want. download the free weather app. it is free. tonight new information about what may have caused hundreds of bricks to fall from that building on the upper east side. the buildings department just gave an update, this as some business owners are considering lawsuits over the tens of thousands of dollars they say they have lost this week. eyewitness news reporter darla miles is on first avenue.

>> spoke with one business owner who says a lawsuit is a last resort but it is not completely off the table for the tens of thousands of dollars that he has lost in revenue. meantime he is going to work with the city and his insurance company to deal with those losses, this while contractors work around the clock to finish this project and reopen first avenue by rush hour monday morning. >> they are now starting to do a hand demolition. >> reporter: hundreds of bricks, one by one, have to be removed by hand before this section of first avenue is deemed safe and reopened. >> those three platforms you see will eventually drop down. they will work all night long with the objective of removing all the brick down to the bare spot that you see. >> reporter: that bare spot is where hundreds of bricks rained down monday night at east 63rd and first avenue. since then dozens of businesses have been closed while contractors make the repairs. >> we're very, very aware of

of this event. >> reporter: how much money have you lost? >> around $50,000. >> reporter: more than an inconvenience for this man. his restaurant is right below the building where the bricks fell down. home. they don't know what to do, when they will be back to work. they all work on minimum wage and hourly rates. >> reporter: a handful of friday. for others the small business association will help them try to recoup some of their losses. >> in five years we build this business, and suddenly we don't know what happened, and we are not even at fault. >> reporter: so in terms of the investigation they are still trying to find out why those bricks fell down. initially they are thinking that the brick ties came loose from the building, but at this point no violations have been filed. eyewitness news. >> darla, thank you.

suspect a copycat set three recent fairs in forest hills. shredded paper was set on fire outside a station house late wednesday night. the damage was to a police cruiser and two dumpsters that were also set on fire. police say a man caught on surveillance video does not match images of the suspect in seven recent arson fires targeting homes under construction or renovation. >> we believe he is a person who lives nearby. we have several witnesses who we showed the tape to of the fire, and they think they know him from the area. right now we don't believe the two are matched. >> police are investigating the homeowner. a note was delivered to a firehouse by a young woman that read, "if you want help catching the fair suspect, call me." but detectives who interviewed her believe she's motionally disturbed and has no connection to the fires. a guilty verdict for former

he is now facing many years in prison. a jury convicted him and his son adam of all eight bribery, extortion, and conspiracy counts. we sent out a push alert as soon as the verdict came down. eyewitness news reporter stephan kim is at the courthouse. >> reporter: along with sheldon silver, dean skelos once made up two-thirds of albany's three men in a room. but now the man what was once the most powerful in the state has been found guilty. >> no further comments. >> reporter: yet another albany power broker found guilty of abusing his power. dean skelos and his son adam convicted of extorting $300,000 of income and other benefits for adam in a bribery scheme, a scheme that unralphed when investigators began recording their phone calls. prosecutors say the former

different backgrounds. the meeting ended with prayer. in the race for president protesters disrupted republican candidate donald trump's speech manhattan. a dozen protesters criticized his comments about banning muslims from the u.s., some of them paying to hear trump speak, then disrupting in protest. trump was speak at the republican party of pennsylvania's annual commonwealth club luncheon held at the plaza hotel. meanwhile democratic candidate hillary clinton was inrepublican territory today pledging to defeat isis. the former secretary of state held a rally in oklahoma. she says she's the only candidate with a specific plan to defeat the terrorist group. oklahoma is among several super tuesday states holding democratic primary contests in march. today new york city mayor bill de blasio is undergoing outpatient surgery for a hernia. he has cleared his schedule through sunday to rest and recover.

huge enough that a federal judge refused to grant bail. >> mr. burke is disappointed out. >> reporter: burke's defense attorney unable to dispute the allegation that burke soughted this man what happened to break into chief burke's department vehicle parked in burke's driveway back in 2012. but inside federal court today, prosecutors painted a miserable picture of a man who thought he had the power to beat up loeb in front of at least three officers, then allegedly suggest they give loeb, a heroin addict, a so- called hotshot, a deadly mix of heroin. this is loeb's attorney. >> somebody has to say obviously we're not doing that, right? you know, we'll cover up a beating for you, but a hotshot, you know, we don't know. >> you're talking about a man who is a two-time convicted felon who did not make one allegation that day that

temperatures in the 50s. folks are enjoying it, and at a time of the year when you think about the mall or indoors, think about hikes or pleasant. tonight it will feel a little on the cool side but we're still at 60 degrees and the high in the park 61. compare that to the averages. 44 over 33. those are your normals. nowhere near that in the seven- day accuweather forecast. our temperatures over the next seven hours dropping to the mid-50s. just some cloud cover keeping temperatures steady. a very pleasant evening. long island lower 50s. hudson valley, still near 60 in poughkeepsie. same thing in belmar. tomorrow morning clouds like this morning, maybe patchy fog, then the clouds will thin out allowing to us get in the low and middle sick. probably add three degrees to today's high.

>> reporter: the archdiocese is his it even alerted the district attorney's office that it would turn over any evidence it found but that so far it has not. and if any parishioner has seat. marcus solis, channel 7 eyewitness news. we want to turn now to breaking news on the east side where a woman walking down the street was injured by someone who had jumped from a window above. eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross is on the scene. a.j. >> reporter: sade, talk about a shocking and freightenning seen, police tell us a 56-year- old woman lived here on the third floor of this apartment building. she jumped from that third floor here on first avenue and fell on top of an elderly woman walk here along the sidewalk. now, take a look at this video taken shortly after police arrived on scene. investigators say the 71-year- old victim walking along the sidewalk near first avenue and east 51st street was seriously injured and taken to nearby

with non life threatening injuries. authorities say the jumper was rushed to bellevue hospital where she later passed away from her injuries. we spoke with an eyewitness news what didn't want to show his face but says he quickly called for help and tended to the women until medics arrived. >> this old lady, she was on the stairs, bleeding from her head. she was totally messed up. and i was trying to stop the bleeding, and when i did, she gave like two last breaths, then she passed away. >> reporter: so again, one woman remains in the hospital with serious injuries. the other woman what fell on top of that victim, she has since passed away from her injuries. please stick with us on-line as well as on social media and we will have updates throughout the evening. a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you for that. fans of the popular daily fantasy sports sites draft kings and fanduel can keep playing for now.

that the games are illegal and he blocked them from operating, but hours later, a state appeals court issued an order allowing both companies to keep doing business in new york state until there is another ruling in that case. a possible bias crime targeting a jewish symbol in brooklyn. a menorah was vandalized in a park yesterday. it was knocked over and damaged, and the happy hanukkah sign above it was stolen. the menorah's lights never went out. it has since been repaired. new information about a group of teens arrested after a robbery near central park. police are saying that group is not linked to the robberies that happened earlier this week in the park. a separate person of interest is wanted in those cases. police say they have recovered a bb gun linked to the earlier robberies, and they hope to have that person behind that inpaterson in custody soon. dozens of families

a block of row homes in the bronx. nine people were hurt including six firefighters. eyewitness news reporter rob nelson has more on that. >> reporter: video from overnight shows how the flames swallowed this block of row homes along valentine avenue, forcing residents to flee their buildings shortly before midnight. >> i'm okay. i'm all right. i'm lucky to be alive. >> reporter: fire quickly shot up to six alarms, damaging or destroying nine buildings and displacing 89 people including 15 children. >> i just heard a bunch of breaking glass, people yelling. i looked out my back window, everything was red. i stepped out into the hallway. it was full of smoke, and there's a firefighter at the bottom of the stairs and he said, you need to get out. >> reporter: it took 200 firefighters three hours to bring the blaze under control, the fire able to spread so quickly because five of the row homes are wood framed. >> the fire took advantage of

and it pretty much devastated it. >> reporter: displaced families were taken to a nearby salvation army center for help from the red cross. many temporarily shifted to local hotels. >> we're going to help them with emergency housing, funds for food and clothing, health and emotional support. >> reporter: there were a total of nine injuries, six to firefighters, three to civilians, but those injuries were minor. meanwhile the cause of this fire is still under investigation but some of the buildings have been so badly damaged they may have to be demolished. reporting from the tremont section of the bronx, rob nelson, channel 7 eyewitness news. the family of a black teen shot 16 times by a white chicago police officer joined the call for change today. protesters are calling for the resignation of mayor rahm emanuel. dash cam video was released last month. there have been protests almost daily since. >> we want justice, we want parks we want our community to be safe!

evening hours, mid-50s, cloud cover. norwalk, connecticut, a little cooler but still comfortable by december standards with partly to mostly cloudy skies. just like you saw today, clouds and fog early, then it can look mostly cloudy at times. i think that's the same drill tomorrow but numbers just a few degrees milder, a light southwest wind. the futurecast. this is portray ago mainly clear sky at 8:00 a.m. i'm a little suspicious of that. i think there's a little low cloud cover. as the afternoon wears on a mix of clouds and sun, temperatures in the low and perhaps middle six. notice how more clouds come in tomorrow evening into sunday morning. that's with the warm front. worst occasions couple of sprinkles could get into sullivan and dutchess county. during the day we are going to battle with the cloud cover. we are going to warm up in spite of that. mid and upper 60s across central new jersey. that's our best chance.

in asbury park a proposal to raise parking rates especially in busy zones during peak hours and lowering rates in less used parking areas. that would involve raising the meter rates from $2 an hour to $3 an hour. so much concern right now about concussions in sports. in fact there are up to 3.8 million sports-related concussions every year. >> that is a lot. now there might bea breakthrough to quickly diagnose those concussions. abc has that story. >> reporter: a potential breakthrough for diagnosing sports-related concussion, especially for so many parents who are concerned about their children suiting up. head injuries are even the subject of will smith's motion picture "concussion." nearly 250,000 kids under 19 were treated in emergency
