run. that kept driving. >> police tracked down the driver and arrested him shortly after the accident that take place at sea girt in far rockaway. cefaan kim is live at the scene with details. >> reporter: sandra and rob, eyewitnesses say the 21-year- old woman was crossing here at beach 19th street. she had the walk sign when a car came barreling down seagirt to beat the red light and sped off. >> i am happy she pushed the girl away. if not, it would have been over for the both of them. >> reporter: witnesses in far rockaway describe a horrific seen. it was before 1:00 p.m. when they say the driver of this white mustang came barreling down seagirt boulevard at 50 miles per hour. according to witnesses, the 21-

a little girl and had the right- of-way when the mustang slacked into her but not before the victim pushed the child out of harm's way. >> believes i was shocked. i was in awe. when you see that, you see a person do something like that, like somebody has no mercy and they don't care for life. >> reporter: witnesses say the driver sped off but several drivers who saw it happened chased after him. police say the suspect was arrested about 2:3025 blocks from the scene near the nassau county border. you can see heavy damage to the mustang, abused above the tire. the victim was knocked several dozen feet from the force of the impact. neighbors say she lives on the block. >> i heard she is not doing well. our wishes and prayers go out to her this holiday season. i am sad to hear this. >> reporter: the victim was rushed to the hospital with head trauma and is fighting for

>> once i saw that, i tried to cover my kids' eyes. to have my kids' see something like that, no. >> reporter: police say charges for that driver are pending. cops have not released the names of the suspect or the victim. at this hour it's unclear what the relationship is between the victim and the young girl. cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. now to the mild weather. this probably wasn't what composers had in mind when they wrote christmas classics like let it snow and white christmas. >> not at all. today the mercury topped out at 67 in central park. the average temperature is 44 degrees. we did some deciphering, a difference of 23 degrees. >> at time's square, lots of people are enjoying the warm night. >> man, oh, man we have team coverage of the warm weather.

we begin with meteorologist jeff smith and the exclusive accuweather forecast, not only did we break records but cases. j.f.k. up to 70 degrees. the old record 63. central park 67. old record set in 1923, a long- standing record. newark, islip and bridgeport breaking records. 68 and 61 respectively. highs up to 72 in morristown. that list i showed you earlier, they weren't the warmest locations. 72 belmar. 73 toms river. we have fallen back a little bit. backdoor cool front from new england causing a wind to cool us down. 61 toward morristown. overnight middle 50s in central park. probably 40s north and west. fog developing overnight. be careful if you are out driving late tonight and early tomorrow morning. tomorrow there will be rain developing.

new york's highest ranking lawmakers are asking the federal government to help the state to block people on the terror watch list, to keep them from legal gun purchases. senator schumer and governor cuomo warned that the current gun sale rules have dangerous loopholes. the stand to change gun rules comes one day before the third anniversary of the sandy hook elementary school massacre in newtown, connecticut. lucy yang is in central park. lucy? >> reporter: well, sandra, as we get ready to mark the third anniversary of the horrible newtown, connecticut, school shooting, one mother's group is marking this with a rally against gun violence.
