>> reporter: the impact of the cars sent her flying several dozen feet. she was sent to the medical center with head trauma clinging to life but before she was struck, she likely saved a little girl's life. >> i'm happy she pushed her away. >> reporter: eyewitnesss in far rockaway describing a horrific scene. it was just before 1:00 p.m. when this driver came barrelling down the road at more than 50 miles an hour. a 21-year-old woman was holding a little girl's hand and the suspect trying to beat the red light slammed into the young woman and she pushed the young child out of the way. >> i was shocked and in awe because when you see a person do that, you don't see that. >> reporter: several others

the suspect was arrested about 25 blocks from here by the nassau county border. heavy damage to the front passenger side of the mustang showed how hard she was struck. a busted side-view mirror and massive dent to the front, right tire. the victim was hit just steps from his home. . >> i was saddened to hear this. >> once i saw that, i turned my head and tried to cover my kids eyes. because to have my kids see that, my kids, no. >> reporter: it's still unclear at this hour what the relationship is between the victim and the little girl but, again, that little girl is likely alive tonight because of the actions of that woman. in jamaica, stefon kim, channel 7, eyewitness news. new at 11:00, a teenager is in the hospital in serious condition after being hit by a car this evening. that car did remain on the

investigation. . in manhattan, police are investigating after a teenager was shot in east harlem. somebody riding a dirt bike pulled out a combun and shot the 19-year-old. the teen was taken to harlem hospital and is expected to survive. police have not made any arrests. another day of record- breaking temperatures in december. take a look, folks outside tonight eating outside, no heavy winter coats and while you won't have to wear a coat tomorrow, you might need an umbrella. meteorologist jeff smith is here with details. >> we typically see these temperatures in the early part of may. we were blowing records out of the water today. central park, beating a record set back in 1923. jfk airport getting up to the

he and his passenger was treated for their injuries. he is charged with criminally negligent homicide. new questions tonight about the use of excessive force by police after deputies shoot and kill an armed man on the street in california. this video has sparked outrage as it showed him firing a dozen rounds, even after the suspect is already on the ground. lucy yang is here with the latest on the investigation. lucy. >> reporter: well, sandra, he was walking around a busy los angeles boulevard, moments before police arrived, now he's dead. did sheriffs make the streets safer, or did they go too far when they fired their weapons 33 times? the pops you hear are the shots fired. 33 by two sheriff deputies in los angeles. tonight, a storm is brewing over this fatal encounter. >> he's crossing the street with no real apparent regard

>> reporter: the armed man identified as 28-year-old nicholas robertson. authorities say he had a criminal background, walking erratically sunday morning with a gun in hand. witnesses say he fired the weapon about a cosen times before they arrived. they ordered him to put his weapon down and stop but the video shows him ignoring the commands and continuing towards a crowded gas station. >> as he's making his way northbound towards the gas station, there are two people and three children in a carat a gas pump within five feet of him at the time. >> reporter: the deputies fire and keep shooting even after he is down. tonight, robertson's family and members of the community protesting what they call excessive force. >> they shot him in his shoulder, and he's crawling, at

new tonight, christmas grinches strike in new jersey. a family holiday light display, a long-time tradition for the community destroyed by vandals. those thieves caught on camera ripping out lights and stealing decorations. the homeowners were disappointed but not letting it ruin his holiday. malory is in ocean township with that story, malory. >> reporter: rob, the man behind the lights here on timber drive says this display is his gift to the community, but it appears early in the morning when the lights were off, there was an attempt to steal christmas.

christmas lights designed to spread holiday cheer was met by thieves. >> i can't just go to the store today and buy a lot of the stuff that's been collected over the years. >> reporter: shane mccary's 68,000 lights and dozens of figures have been a tradition outside of his monmouth, new jersey home. also outside the home, watch as a lexus suv drives up. three men make their way onto the property at 3:30 in the morning. this candy cane is tethered to the ground and wired to a power supply. he appears to get spooked and makes wrong for it. the sticky fingers make their corn way to the corner of the property. >> he grabs the snow man. >> reporter: frosty didn't have a say in the matter.

all right, jeff. you have been the man of the hour this whole weekend. . >> not for skiers. >> good point, good point. >> maybe come february or march, the way this winter is going. we have some more mild weather coming up as we head into the day tomorrow. there's going to be a lot of cloud cover out there and eventually going to be some rain coming in tomorrow evening but still temperatures getting into the 60s and well into the 60s, south and west of new york city. we head outside right now, look down towards the empire state building. there's going to be some fog developing overnight. i'm especially concerned about areas of new york city and new jersey, some dense fog could hamper the morning commute. temperatures at 55, getting up to 67 for an afternoon high. transporting some moisture off

that's the reason for some of the fog out there. 44 is the normal high. we were a full 23 degrees above that today. score, that record has fallen by the way side. it was set back in 1923 and the sun coming up at 7:11 tomorrow so cloudy but still mild tomorrow. during the day, but the steadier rain really waits until night fall to move on in. temperatures stay mild tuesday and rain returns thursday. we could be near record levels of warmth as well and more seasonal in the weekend. temperatures in the mid-40s, will feel a lot different. it's going to be a shock to the system by next saturday. 54 in morristown, lower and middle 50s on long island. check out visibility. most of the city is not having a problem points north. but to the south, a different story. one mile visibility in tom's river. fog is developing in these areas and there's a dense fog

weather service through 10:00 a.m. on monday, south and west of new york city, much of new jersey, as a matter of fact. you can see the stream lines coming off the atlantic ocean. it's a cloudy night. not going to have very good viewing conditions, and a meteor shower is peaking out overnight tonight, unfortunately. the clouds lasting into tomorrow morning, might be a spotty drizzle. could definitely be a dense fog, south and west of the city and we wait for the rain to come in, probably around 5:00, the delaware water gap and overspreading the rest of the region during the evening. it's going to be a quick but fairly heavy shot of rain, could be a rumble of thunder and we clear out as we head into the day on tuesday and stay very mild. eventually, colder air comes into the picture, at least down to normal conditions by the weekend. so here's your accuweather forecast, mainly cloudy, mild, areas of fog, dense, spotty drizzle, down to about 54. same deal around sunrise,

take a look at tonight's top stories. a woman in critical condition after she was struck by a car in queens. it happened at seeinger boulevard and 19th street. a driver tried to beat a red light and he is under arrest investigations over a deadly shooting involving sheriff's deputies in los angeles county. deputies fired 33 rounds killing a man seen minutes before firing shots into the air. authorities say the officers kept firing after the man fell to the ground because he was still holding the gun a teenager in serious condition after he was shot in east harlem. police say somebody on a dirt bike opened fire striking the teen. no arrests have been made there topping our news this half hour, a catholic parish reeling from an unholy sex scandal. >> a priest just resigned after being accused of fleecing two city parishes to finance a kinky sex life.

the parishonener heard was a reading of the delegation. cardinal dolan told me he admired him for doing it. channel 7, eyewitness news. police in pennsylvania possibly preventing a mass shooting at a wal-mart last night. they say the man entered the store and began pointing a gun at customers. officers surrounded the building, then went inside, fired at the man and hit him in the chest. he was pronounced dead at the nobody else inside the store was hit. a routine traffic stop on long island ended when an suv crashed into a building. a police officer pulled in front of the suv this afternoon and tried to stop the driver for texting behind the wheel. instead, the chief rear ended the police car and hitting another vehicle. the officer suffered minor injuries. the driver was arrested on drug charges. investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged six postal trucks in

the fdny says it all started on a third floor of a parking garage in chelsea. about 10:30 last night, firefighters got it under control around midnight. nobody was hurt. the postal service says there was no mail in any one of the trucks. also, a newly released report suggests there may be reason for concern around recent drone sightings around the area. the airports in the new york metropolitan area have the highest number of close encounters between drones and planes. the barred college analysis of federal and government data identified 327 close encounters december 2013 and september of 2015. of those, 86 were in this area. a close encounter being defined as an event where drones presented some level of hazard to a manned aircraft.

keep that in mind if you're traveling in the wee hours of the morning and the morning commute, there may be fog issues causing airport delays and delays in terms of people traveling a little bit more slowly on the roadways. 55, mostly cloudy skies out there. the wind coming in from the east at about 5 to 7 miles per hour. the temperatures staying steady all night. this is where the fog starts developing in full force in the city. basically from 2:00 a.m. through 6:00, 7:00 in the morning. highs today getting up to 72 in morristown, 73 at tom's river. 67 at the park, broke a record that was set back in 1923. mid-50s across much of the region right now. look at that visibility towards belmar, visibility just .3 miles in tom's river. this is where we have a dense fog advisory in effect where the visibility could go below a quarter mile in some areas, through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, definitely affecting the morning commute

tomorrow, lots of clouds out there, morning fog. we get into the 60s again during the afternoon, probably not quite as warm as what we had today because we will have more in the way of cloud cover. i don't expect much rain during the daylight hours tomorrow, but by 5:00 p.m., you'll have steadier rain approaching the delaware water, to new jersey, rapidly spreading across the region during the evening hours of tomorrow night before we start clearing things out after midnight, another mild day shaping up for tuesday. and, again, the cold coming in next weekend followed by milder air as we head into christmas week. here's the accuweather seven- day forecast. again, 63 tomorrow, maybe a passing shower during the day, steadier rain at night, breezy, milder, 62, a little bit cooler, 64 on wednesday, more rain comes into the picture on thursday and we'll really cool things off and it'll feel more like mid-december saturday and sunday along with some wind. bill evans has an update in the morning. >> thank you, jeff. finally tonight, the story of how a community came

the holiday season. >> city workers in louisiana threw out a christmas tree set up by a homeless man claiming it was a code violation but that wasn't right according to some people who decided to do something about it. >> a perfect christmas picture in an imperfect place. saving christmas for a homeless man who spends every night under an expressway and maybe providing some holiday spirit for the people who pass by every day. >> my purpose was to bring hope and restore hope and smiles. >> reporter: john had a tree outside his tent until it was thrown away friday morning, cleared out by city sanitation. >> it's pretty much what they took from me and i wanted it back. >> reporter: oh, and he did, one by one. ordinary people dropped by wanting to give back too, bringing trees, decorations, and even pinning a stocking to his tent.

says, is what happened next. >> says, well, i want to stop and help decorate. well, that really touched my heart. >> let's do what we've got, guys. >> i don't care what code violation it is. it's the holidays, and these people need everything that can uplift them as much as they can. >> reporter: he ended up with more trees than he can handle so he shared with homeless women living nearby. >> they cried, and -- because they haven't had a tree in a couple of years. >> reporter: and in return, another gift. >> this may not look like value, but to me, it's the reward that i wanted. >> reporter: payback from one of those women who, like him sbound by the kindness of strangers. >> that's what we should do by helping others. you don't have to have thousands or millions to help
