tt2w`t3n@24" bt@qc., [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: still to come, music from elo. our next guest has more talent in her ten powerful toes than most of us have in our 11 or even 12 toes. she is the principal dancer of the american ballet theatre. you can see her through december 20th in "the nutcracker" at the segerstrom center in orange county and she's the subject of the documentary "a ballerina's tale," please say hello to misty copeland. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: good to have you here in l.a. you're from l.a. >> it's nice to be home. >> jimmy: you've found great success in new york so people assume that's where you're from. you're from san pedro. >> i am. >> jimmy: aren't they naming an area aiv after you there?
1:08 am
>> jimmy: what are they naming? a square or something? >> a square. down the street from where my oldest sister lives. they're painting this mural with like three massive mist whys iveive misties on the side of a building and i feel so bad for her. >> jimmy: why? >> she gets to look at that every day. >> jimmy: i bet she'll be happy to look at it every day. i'm going to do a quick summary. you started out -- you're not an upper or admit-class kid, you were disadvantaged, you did not start dancing until you were 13 years old which a apparently is very late for ballet. you started dancing and you won awards and scholarships. now you've become the principal dancer at the american ballet theater. [ cheers and applause ] which is a big, big deal. not only is that a big deal you're the first female african-american principal danceer dancer [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: and you've inspired
1:09 am
into ballet dancing. and on top of it really brought a lot of attention to the art form, which was really kind of fading? is it true, is it correct to say you've saved ballet? you can say that. >> jimmy: do you feel like -- guillermo and i saved ballet, brooklyn? >> something like that. or scared it. >> jimmy: were we better or worse than you thought we were going to be dancing-wise? >> a combination. you know, guillermo's commitment was -- interesting. >> jimmy: yes. >> your natural physique, which i've told you, really surprised me. >> jimmy: in a good way? >> in a good way. >> jimmy: yes, yes. >> all the dancers at abt who watched the segment, they were so impressed with your legs. >> really? see that, guillermo, everyone was impressed with my legs.
1:10 am
something? you don't have to lie to him, you can come back to the show any time. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: he's been working on that one since october. we have a clip. let's look at what we did together. >> we're going to start with the very first step that the swans do in the second act. five, six, seven, eight -- you have to move so he doesn't crush you. i'm extremely nervous about this performance for them. my hope is that they don't fall and hurt themselves. okay, i don't think we're going to get any farther with that stuff. >> i think we're ready to dance. >> guillermo: i think i'm ready for dinner. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: so we finished with a big dance number. and i have to tell you, when we did dance and all of a sudden it went from funny to me being nervous, i was nervous i was going to trample one of the dancers.
1:11 am
are there accidents? i know there are injuries. are there collisions and whatnot? >> yeah, i mean, that's the amazing thing about live theater. is that you're going to get whatever is happening in the moment. and whatever the audience is feeding you, you're going to react to that as well. but yes. >> jimmy: you've seen it happen? >> i've been a part of it many times and i've seen it happen. i think it's one of my favorite things about live theater is seeing those things happen. >> jimmy: is there one in particular that stands out to you? >> yes. there was one moment in the ballet, human variations, a george ballanchine, made for american ballet theater, you would know. >> jimmy: you don't have to tell me, yes. >> i was with another soloist couple, we were doing these turns towards each other, me and another girl. we were dipped by our partners and our tiaras got stuck together. we literally had to be pulled apart. we were center stage.
1:12 am
coming forward. we were like, oh my god, oh my god! >> jimmy: like elk fighting in the woods, wow. that's pretty crazy. and does the audience laugh? or do people get angry? >> i don't know if they realized what was going on. you try your best to make it look graceful and like it's supposed to be happening. you just keep a smile on your face. >> jimmy: are you graceful in everything? brushing your teeth? is it just a beautiful thing? >> no, no. i'm very clumsy i would say. >> jimmy: you are very clumsy, really? >> yeah. >> jimmy: are you very flexible, though, yes? >> yeah, that too. maybe that's why i'm so clumsy. >> jimmy: is that natural? or sit a combination of working on it too? >> it's a combination. i think that's why ballet was so easy for me is that my body was very loose and flexible. and i think i must have been about 7 years old when i realized how flexible i was. i remember i woke up -- i'd never danced before.
1:13 am
i woke up one morning stretching my arms. and they weren't all the way over. i was holding my hands. i remember thinking, what just happened? i woke my mom up, look what i can do, look what i can do? she's like, that's weird. >> jimmy: this is like how spider-man got started. >> years later i think being a swan in "swan lake," having flexible shoulders helps. >> jimmy: can you still do that thing? >> i've never done it before -- yes, i can still do it. >> jimmy: you can, okay. will you do it? [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: wow. that's good. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: who knew that would come in handy? do you feel like you would be great at any kind of dancing? like were you involved in ballroom dancing or some other kind? >> i was always really drawn to music and movement. i don't know if i would have been this natural at every time
1:14 am
but i think that athletics just run in my family. like we're all pretty natural with movement and athletics. like my cavs, all of the copelands have them. we call them the copeland calves. >> jimmy: thank goodness for the copeland calves. you're doing a limited run performance here in san pedro, in that area in orange county? >> american ballet theater, yes. >> jimmy: the documentary is very, very interesting. misty copeland, everybody.
