>> first tonight a new and clearer image of the man new york cops say attacked a 16- year-old girl this morning on her way to school. good evening at 11:00. i'm bill ritter. >> i'm sade baderinwa. police are stepping up their search to find the man who attacked the girl in queens. >> police want to find this guy before he strikes again. >> jim dolan in the whitestone section. it. >> reporter: sade, what do you suppose this 16-year-old girl was thinking about on her way to school? an important test or christmas vacation? she was attacked from behind, viciously, brutally, with a box cutter, and undoubtedly scared for life. the person what did it is still out there. the streets in whitestone are bathed in christmas lights this time of year. a quiet neighborhood where they don't even have to think much about the violence in other parts of the city. but they do now.

live in a quiet area. never no trouble. i'm living here 34 years. never heard anything like this before. >> reporter: surveillance cameras watched as the 16-year- old female victim was walking to school. you see a man run up behind her. he slashed her face and throat just out of camera's view and came. police say there was no interaction. >> he's wearing a surgical object. she is slashed in her face twice. once from ear to her throat, the middle of her throat, and another part of the face as well. >> the victim is a student from china who attends this small private school. police need help from a community unaccustomed to having to work with police. >> there's no excuse for a be attacked. the authorities. we want to make sure they feel comfortable working with us in trying to catch the assailant. >> reporter: police are not

but they are saying there was no relationship between the suspect and victim and there was no interaction before this happened so clearly this could happen again. he could strike again. police are hoping they catch him before that happens. reporting live from whitestone, jim dolan. new at 11:00 a toddler's death ruled a homicide after a medical examiner's report reveals serious abuse. the two-year-old's mom called 911 from their east 12*6 apartment last march. she told police she heard him fall, put him back in bed, and later found him not breathing. there was a large amount of blood in his abdomen. so far no arrests. we're following a developing story. protests after the first cop on trial for the manslaughter of freddie gray in baltimore gets a hung jury, a mistrial. a huge blow for the

so eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross in baltimore with the latest. >> reporter: bill, no justice, no peace, a slogan that has been repeated by protesters here. after today's mistrial many are wondering if there can be justice or peace in freddie gray's case. there were demonstrations earlier met by a very large police presence and while there's stale possible tea officer william port can be tried again this case as well as in the rest in this city is far from over. >> no justice, no peace! >> reporter: freddie gray's mysterious death following his arrest by baltimore police in april became a lightning rod for protests and riots. vivid scenes and images officials as well as gray's family are praying will not happen again following mas trial with the first of six officers to be tried for his death. >> we are prepared to respond. we will protect our residents. >> reporter: still deadlocked

could not reach a verdict on any of the charges. prosecutors along porter ignored gray's cries for help and refused to put a seatbelt on him's was transported in a police van. >> i hope we do get a conviction somewhere because freddie is dead and someone needs to be convicted. >> reporter: as groups of protesters took to the street, city leaders and gray's family made pleas for patience and peace. five other officers have yet to stand trial. >> we ask the public to remain calm, patient, because we are confident there will be another trial. >> reporter: and both the prosecution and defense will meet tomorrow to discuss a possible retrial date for porter. meanwhile the other officer officers are scheduled to stand trial consecutively and separately beginning january 6th. a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news.
