breaking news, bear attack. the leader of a boy scout troop in northern new jersey injured when he comes face-to-face with a bear. >> and developing right now, a father in the bronx charged with murdering his newborn son. new video just obtained by eyewitness news shows a man identified as the suspect right after the alleged crime. good evening. i'm joe torres. >> and i'm lauren glassburg in for sandra bookman. we begin with breaking news in new jersey. officials say a boy scout leader was injured during an

but the three scouts with him are not hurt. >> the attack happened around noon at split rock reservoir in rockaway township, morris county. stephan kim is there with the breaking details. >> reporter: well, joe and lauren, take a look down this road. this attack occurred at the bottom of this windy road about a half mile from here by the road. first responders have set up in search of the victim. it took them several hours to locate this victim. meanwhile, residents living around here by the reservoir are absolutely startled by this attack. >> we're shocked. we hike here all the time. >> reporter: residents living by the split rock reservoir in rockaway, new jersey shaken by what happened. a bear attacked four people in the woods, injuring a male adult, a boy leading three scouts around noon.

luckily, the children were unharmed. by 3:30, the victim was found and rushed to a nearby hospital by a state police helicopter. he was wrapped from head to toe, loaded onto the chopper on a stretcher. residents say they see bears here all the time. >> any given day, i could see one, i could see three, i could see five. it all depends. >> reporter: but never before has a bear attacked people. for many living here, the dangers bears pose roaming through their backyards never cross their minds, until now. >> to hear for the absolute fact that someone has gotten attacked right here, i have animals, i have myself, i leave before light and i often come home after dark, and i cannot see the fact there was a bear attack today is definitely startling to me. >> reporter: again, the victim was wrapped from head to toe,

we are learning his injuries are considered to be nonlife threatening. we'll bring updates as we get them. channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. and stay with eyewitness news for continuing coverage of this breaking story. as we find out more information, we'll post those details to abc 7 ny and update you on the eyewitness news app. a couple from the bronx is being questioned right now in a gruesome crime, the death of their 2-month-old son. the dead baby was found in the woods near a motel in brewster, putnam county. eyewitness news reporter lucy yang is in the morris park section of the bronx with new information. lucy? >> reporter: well, joe, a 51- year-old bronx father is now awaiting arraignment for allegedly killing his 2-month- old baby boy. we're told a savage murder happened here in his apartment on bogart avenue in the morris park section of the bronx. we're going to show you a

shortly after birth. those smiles would not last investigators tell me on december 10, the newborn, mason white, was crying as newborns do, and that 51-year-old jose him. police believe he took care of him by smothering and choking the baby to death. when the mother came out to see what had happened, she said he threatened to kill her, too. two days later, authorities report the couple disposed of the baby in a wooded area in brewster, new york. we just obtained this surveillance video from the apartment building. a worker said detectives identified this man as the father and they believe the baby's body was in the duffle bag. this heartbreaking story, finally coming to light last week when the mother apparently tried to kill herself by overdosing on pills. the hospital staff saved her life. while there, she reportedly told the staff what had happened. a call was made to the police and the baby's body was found

s hard to believe, but today marks one year since two n.y.p.d. officers were shot and killed in the line of duty. officers rafael ramos and wenjian liu were killed by a lone gunman while sitting in their patrol car in bedford bed- stuy. today, family, friends and colleagues gathered to dedicate a plaque to the fallen officers and lay a wreath at the sites of their shootings. kimberly richardson is in bed- stuy, brooklyn tonight. >> reporter: joe, as mayor de blasio put it, this men were attacked simply because of the badge and uniforms they were wearing. one year ago, detectives ramos and liu were sitting in their patrol cars. the men never made it home from work. once again, a year later, a

where in a split second so many lives were shattered. >> reporter: one year ago, the bottom dropped out of their worlds. >> both men lived very full heart. >> reporter: detectives rafael ramos and wenjian liu, december 20, as they sat in their patrol car in brooklyn, ishmael brinsley walked up and, without warning, shot and killed the pair. plaques now hang inside the 84th precinct where the men worked, where liu's father described the agonizing void now in his life. his widow translated for her father-in-law. >> this is the longest that i

i would give anything to see him and hear his voice again. >> reporter: their sudden violent deaths rattled the city. even now, many who came to pay their respects are still haunted by what happened. >> their deaths stopped a momentum, a momentum sort of precipice in this country a year ago that was beginning to spin out of control. it stopped that. it stopped that insanity. >> reporter: right before the shooting, brinsley ranted on social media about his intent to kill. the detective rafael ramos foundation has been founded by his wife. >> what would you say to the man that did this? do you ever think about him? >> i try not to. >> yeah. >> i try not to think about him at all. >> reporter: on that same day, the suspect did end up committing suicide not far from here.

cutting edge when it comes to how we decipher, disrupt and decode social media communications made by terror suspects and terror groups. >> which has already passed in the house would develop a comprehensive strategy for monitoring public social media posts and decoding encrypted messages. mother nature put on a spectacular show in the sky this morning. take a look at the images of the northern lights just east of spokane, washington. those lights are created when particles from the sun collide with gas particles in the earth's atmosphere and that usually lights up the sky a color of green or pink and some other colors are possible. best time of year to see the lights is usually in the winter. we're kind of in that area, canada or alaska. the northern lights can sometimes be seen as far south as new orleans. >> looks like a postcard. >> doesn't even look real. >> wow.

i have to pinch myself when i'm looking at the seven-day forecast. it's really incredible. lot to look forward to. we look over toward midtown and the southern end of central park, it's a crisp, nice december evening out there. we have light wind, unlike yesterday. that southwest wind coming in at 3 miles per hour. temperature around 41. got up to 42 during the afternoon. that's right on target for this day. winter begins officially tomorrow night at 11:48. you wouldn't know it. check this out. cloudy, your next few days. a few rounds of rain. couple showers coming in tomorrow night into tuesday. steadier batch of rain for wednesday. that can even bleed into thursday. by thursday, about just incredible levels of warmth. above 70 degrees for much of the area, especially from new york city and south and west by then. clearing for christmas day, but still very mild with temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal still. 40 right now at newark. you've cooled to 35 at white plains. you've cooled down even further

down to 30 at monticello. 35 at sussex. 34 at poughkeepsie. upper 20s down toward toms river, where you still have main clear skies there. as the clouds come in overnight tonight, we have that wind lightly coming in from the south and west, it will tend to kind of put a cap on how low these temperatures can go. probably fall just a couple more degrees in the city before kind of plateauing. we could see the windstream lines coming in from the south and west, transporting milder winds into the region, also transporting moisture. tomorrow will be a milder day. 7:00 in the morning, 41 in the city. 30s, even upper 20s in the far suburbs. during the course of the day, it becomes mostly cloudy. but temperatures actually get up into the lower and perhaps even middle 50s, especially from new york city and points south and west. i do expect any rainfall to stay out of the area during the daylight hours of tomorrow. could be a shower or two late tomorrow night. more likely during the day on tuesday. couple of batches of rain can move through.

we're talking middle and upper 50s by tuesday afternoon. this warm and sometimes wet pattern will continue for much of the week, but check out what happens by christmas eve thursday. 25 to 30 degrees above normal. i was just telling you to get up to 42, that was about our target for this time of year. add 25 to 30 onto those temperatures. do the math and you'll see what temperatures are like on christmas eve. accuweather forecast for tonight, partly cloudy out there. we're down to 38 in midtown. down below freezing in some of the outlying areas, especially well north and west. breezy, milder tomorrow. turning out mainly cloudy. the high getting up to 354. sun going down just after 4:30. again, winter beginning officially tomorrow night at 11:48. it's overcast and mild. the low only going down to 50. could be a shower in spots late, maybe a shower or two during the day on tuesday. highs in the upper 50s. check out wednesday. it's rainy out there, especially during the afternoon, but mild.

i call it record-smashing. i use "smashing" only in extreme circumstances. 71 for a high. check out what the record was. that was set back in 1996 at 63. we're predicting to beat the record by eight degrees. clouds and a passing shower. it won't be completey sunny. does become sunny on christmas day, 50. unsettled weather returning by saturday and sunday. we could spend the entire day thursday above that record high. that is just incredible. >> it's smashing. . missed opportunities, giants fans are saying today. >> giants fans need a hug right now. they really do. nobody thought facing the 13-0 panthers would be easy. but after a much-needed win monday in miami, the giants also earned much-needed confidence. well, in today's game, it went crazy. big blue welcomed in undefeated carolina, trying to keep playoff hopes alive. what a weird day for odell beckham, jr. sure touchdown catch. the guy who catches everything drops it. meanwhile, panthers started touchdown after touchdown, 35- 7. looked like it was over and tempers flared. the hit after the play, could have been ejected, he wasn't. instead, it's big blue. jennings breaking tackles for the 38-yard score. then it got wilder. beckham, 4th and 5, touchdown

but the panthers had still just over minute and a half to work with. they did that. a 43-yard field goal in the final seconds, devastating. 38-35, the giants with the heartbreaking loss. >> it's always a crush to lose. it's difficult to lose under those circumstances right there. but we'll find a way. we'll find a way to keep fighting. that's what we do. well, washington in first in the nfc east heading in as well. against the bills, cousins to reid for reid's second score of the day. 21-0. fourth quarter, washington giving themselves in insurance, the 17-point lead. 35-25, your final. washington hangs on. that means they are now a full game ahead of the giants in the division. as for the jets, today they relaxed after a nail-biter in dallas last night that kept alive their dreams of a wild card spot in the afc. gangrene took care of its own business against the cowboys, but it wasn't easy, even after

quarter on the eric decker touchdown. they had to drive for the game- winning field goal, which they did. it was not pretty, but it was much needed. >> it was the kind of game we were losing in the first half of the year or middle of the season, that we're starting to win now. i'm happy about that. >> there's going to be adversity throughout the game. i thought that was just a great sign for us, just to show that the belief is always there. this was a big one today. chiefs also eying the wild card spot facing the ravens. opening drive, kansas city scores, the 38-yard touchdown. baltimore trying to come back in the fourth quarter. but clawson gets picked off by peters, who sees open field. 90 yards for the touchdown. the 20-point lead, that's where it stands. 34-14, chiefs win. they keep pace with the jets. well, the nets entered today the owners of a four-game losing streak. in each of those four games, they allowed their opponent to score 100 points or more.
