a two-month-old baby boy killed in the bronx. his tiny body buried two county away. tonight his father is charged with that murder all because the infant was crying. but first. >> we have a gentleman in the cave with a bear. he has been injured by the bear. >> a scout leader attacked in new jersey left injured and bleeding in a cave. new details right now about how three boy scouts saved his life. good evening. i am joe torres. >> i am lauren glassberg. praise for those boy scouts for their quick thinking. they put their survival skills to use to lure the bear out and save their scoutmaster.

reservoir in rock away township. the victim lifted to morristown medical center. a.j. ross is there with new details tonight. a.j. >> reporter: this was a fright linney close call. he is very lucky to be alive tonight. he has three brave scouts to thank for the quick thinking and bravery under immense pressure and adversity. >> we have a gentleman in the cave with a bear. he has been injured by the bear. >> reporter: it was an urgent distress call that quickly brought land and air rescue here to splitrock reservoir monday. when they found themselves face to face with a black bear. >> i heard the sirens. i saw a helicopter. i saw they were looking for something because it was just looking around. >> reporter: according to police the scout leader encountered the bear alone inside a cave off one

and when the three scouts outside heard his desperate calls for help they tried to coax the bear out of the cave with food. when that didn't work, their training kicked into gear. >> they had enough press accepts of mind that they were to, besides calling us on the cell phone, they built a signal fire to aid the ground and aerial units in locating them. >> yelling out loud and they have started a fire possibly for a smoke signal. >> reporter: it forced the bear out of the cave and rescuers, who had been searching for hours, the precise location in the nick of time. the scout leader was taken by helicopter to morristown medical center. >> i am sure that their training they received as scouts, they were able to implement to save the life of their scoutmaster.

>> reporter: you may remember last nova rutgers university student in west millford was killed by a bear. authorities have been trying to get a handle on the bear population in this area. >> thank you. a horrific murder in the bronx. a two-month-old baby seen here just after his birth is dead. tonight police charged his father jose feliciano with killing him, then allegedly stuffing his body in a duffle bag. he is set to appear in court tomorrow. lucy yang outside the bronx key courthouse tonight. >> reporter: well, that's right, joe. a 51-year-old father in the bronx is awaiting his arraignment. police believe he killed his two-month-old son because the baby was crying. > it's disgusting. >> reporter: that sums up the

the morris park section of the bronx. what began with the birth of an adorable baby boy has ended in tragedy. police believe the 51-year-old father, jose feliciano, committed the unthinkable. on december 10 i am told this newborn, mason white, was doing what most newborns do. he was crying. the father responded by allegedly smothering and choking his own son to death. when the mother went to check on her two-month-old baby she claims feliciano threatened to kill her as well. >> it's terrible. who is going to do that? >> reporter: this is surveillance video taken outside their apartment. a worker in the building says detectives identified this man as the father and that authorities believed the baby's lifeless body was in the duffle bag. an official tells me the parents dumped their newborn in a wooded area county. last week the mother apparently tried to kill herself by over

after the hospital saved her life she told the staff what happened. police were called. little mason's body was found. jose feliciano now waiting to be arraigned for murder. >> god is going to take care of him, you know? i hope he gets what his punishment is due to him because it's terrible. it's a horrible thing that happened. >> reporter: we're told the father gave a confession to police. the mother has not been charged. the baby, an autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death. live in the bronx, lucy yang, channel 7 eyewitness news. following a developing story out of new jersey where a kohl's store was evacuated due to fumes, fire, and hazmat workers on the scene in secaucus where several people experienced difficulty breathing shortly after 9:00. about a dozen people are being examined in the parking lot. the conditions of the victims is unknown at this time.

for the source of those fumes. new at 11, police are investigating a deadly lamborghini crash in suffolk county. the driver apparently lost control of the luxury sports car slamming into a telephone pole in port jefferson this afternoon. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. he has been identified as 48-year-old glen nelson of beltre. authorities released the name of a store owner shot during a robbery in jersey city. 61-year-old byung lee was shot dead at the top plus stop yesterday afternoon. prosecutors say he had gunshot wounds to his upper body. it's not clear how many robbers may have been involved. so far police have made no arrest for that murder. new tonight police are searching for two young women who attacked a senior citizen in the bronx. these are surveillance photos of the women accused of targeting a 76-year-old. police say the pair followed the man for several blocks early yesterday morning. one of the women then confronted

and knocked him over. the women took the victim's wallet and ran away. radio shock jock and former co-host of the "opie & anthony" show was arraigned on domestic abuse charges this morning. they accuse anthony cumia of yesterday. he was released without bail in order to stay away from the alleged victim. his lawyer denies the charges. cumia was fired from sirius xm satellite radio last year following a series of rationally charged tweets. two nypd police officers shot to death a year ago today in brooklyn. >> see him and hear his voice, i can't. >> detective wenjian liu's family sobbed at the ceremony at the 84th station precinct

they were shot while sitting in their police cruiser by ismaaiyl brencely, who killed himself after the shootings. we will from the mayor and police commissioner who paid tribute to the fallen officers. air france says a suspicious emergency landing of one of its planes in africa was a hoax. a fake bomb rigged with cardboard and a timer was discovered in a bathroom cabinet the island. the pilots of the boeing 777 requested an emergency landing early this morning in kenya where the 459 passengers disembarked using emergency slide. air france's ceo says this was the fourth bomb hoax against the airline in recent weeks. a call to combat the way terrorist groups use social media to radicalize americans. chuck schumer supports the bill aimed at modernizing how authorities decodes the messages

they say extremists can reach impressionable people through the internet that they are not able to act with in person. >> we need to make sure we are on the cutting edge when it comes to how we decipher, disrupt, and decode social media communications made by terror suspects and terror groups. >> well, the bill has already passed in the house. it would develop a comprehensive strategy for monitoring public social media posts and decoding encrypted messages. new tonight amtrak has reportedly activated a new crash prevention system on its new york to philadelphia route. experts say the system could have prevented the derailment in last may that killed eight people. the "wall street journal" reports this is the last stretch of tracks on the northeast corridor to get the system. they can take control of a train before it speeds through a curve where trains should slow down or if the engineer becomes disabled or distracted.

new video of one of the buildings that collapsed during a massive landslide in southern china. dozens of buildings were destroyed in the industrial city on sunday. officials in the country say 13 people were injured and 59 are missing. rescue crews with search dogs are scouring the dirt and debris for possible survivors. authorities say the slide was a pile of construction waste. former president jimmy carter shared heartbreaking news this morning with his sunday school class. his 28-yard-line grandson unexpectedly died. carter told the congregation in his hometown in georgia his grandson jeremy was not feeling well and took a nap in the family's home. hours later his mother realized his heart had stopped. the cause of his death has not been announced. turning now to the race for president. two more staffers with the
