face. a new york cop dead tonight. one of six americans killed in a bombing attack in afghanistan. good evening, everyone, i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm sade baderinwa. first, chaos on the streets. a garbage truck losing control slamming into a building with people inside. what caused the driver inside to crash? cops say a medical condition. >> all this happening in yonkers tonight. josh is live at the scene. . >> reporter: the demolished garbage truck has been towed away from the scene after a dramatic crash this evening. >> i heard a loud noise and i went outside. >> reporter: this garbage truck was on a collision course. chaos just after 8:00 tonight when the mayor said the city

medical condition and hurdled off the avenue. >> he may have had a seizure or something. we're not sure. >> reporter: he crashed into a small building hosting the car service, where there was the owner. >>. >> we can't have 60 people out of work. >> reporter: after 10:00, the crew went through the delicate task of hooking up the massive truck and towing it away from the building. as far as the mayor is concerned, this was pure luck. >> everything else here can be replaced. that building can be replaced. that garbage truck. we've got another 13 to back that up. all we care about is being sure that his life and the lives of the people in the city are okay. >> reporter: and back live, of course, that is the best news of all. you can see the heavy damage to the front of that sanitation vehicle. still no word on the structural integrity of the building after

it. the sanitation worker who was at the wheel, the mayor says was conscious and alert and being evaluated by doctors at jacoby medical center. he has 30 years on the job in the city of yonkers. no serious injuries after all of this. we are live at yonkers, josh, channel 7 eyewitness news. a new york cop dead tonight, one of six americans blown up by a suicide bomber in afghanistan. he was a 15-year veteran. the bomber was on a motorcycle and on a mission of death. afghanistan now in a state of crisis. the nypd is in a state of mourning. eyewitness news reporter jim dolan has the stories at police headquarters. >> reporter: no surprise that detective joseph lamb was in afghanistan, the most dangerous place on earth this week. he spent most of his adult life in dangerous places trying to

safer for you and me, for the nypd, he worked for the warrant squad, certainly the most dangerous and toughest job in the nypd, tracking down dangerous criminals. they raised flags tonight in memory of joseph lamb who had two children. cameras were rolling in 2013 after a 10-month deployment in afghanistan and surprised his step daughter. lemm had been serving nearly half of his two-year-old's son's life at that point. joseph lemm had reached detective grade in his years at the nypd. he worked on the warrant squad, as we said, often recapturing dangerous criminals and suspects. he also served in the air national guard doing two tours of duties in afghanistan and

he had two young children. in a statement, commissioner william bratten said detective joseph lemm epitomized the selflessness we can only strive for, putting his country and his city first. tonight, the commissioner said we grieve and we remember this selfless public servant who dedicated his life to protecting others. there were five other americans killed in that incident at bag bagram air base, which is just south of kabal. a motorcycle drove into them with explosives and it exploded. the taliban has taken responsibility for that incident. detective joseph lemm was 45 years old. reporting live from lower manhattan, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> and our hearts go out to that family. other news, where's winter? technically, it's about 40 minutes away but it doesn't

no snow around here. instead of boots and scarveses, more like flip flops and tees. . lee has the weather. >> it will be a while before we will be doing this, and we won't see that. it's all about rain, not snow. empire state building in christmas colors but at 56 degrees, temperatures steady arising overnight. christmas week, with this warm- up, we do have the threat for rain almost every day. the exception would be christmas day. got some sunshine there. wednesday afternoon into the evening would be the wettest time and that record-shattering warmth. see the clouds around right now, a couple of showers may sneak into the area tomorrow morning, especially north and west. have the umbrella for rain at times tomorrow and all this heavy rain is coming in on wednesday, and look at the christmas outlook. going for 73, which beats the record by a mile and looking for the latest information, wouldn't be surprised to see the all-time record high in

we have a shot at that. more sun on christmas day, a little cooler, mild at 62. we'll have more on the timing of the rain over the next few days in the forecast in just a few minutes. bill, back to you. >> thank you, lee. a disturbing story. a 16-year-old girl on the way to school in queens slashed in the face out of nowhere and by a complete stranger. that girl is afraid to show us her face and because of her injuries, unable to speak. we are at the scene of the attack. >> reporter: this 16-year-old girl came to america for the american dream, leaving her family back in china and came here to build a life for herself. after being here three months, her dream was shattered and turned into a nightmare as she was brutally attacked on this corner as she was going to school. bleeding a lot. >> reporter: speaking through an interpreter, the 16-year-old

throat last week says it's a vision she can't get out of her mind. so terrified her attacker is still waiting for her out there, she asked us to conceal her identity. still weak and physically unable to talk, she's communicating through pen and paper. underneath the face mask she's wearing, there are stitches that run from her eye and ear down to her throat. nearly a week after the attack, she still can't eat solid food. >> my hope is to not have this happen again. >> reporter: this is home security video showing the team leaving for school wednesday morning moments before the attack, not a care in the world that she innocently puts on her back pack and heads off to class. minutes later, the same camera caught her stumbling home covered in blood. the images, though, too graphic for tv. this is video from a nearby home security camera capturing the assault. the victim says she noticed her attacker following her, and out of nowhere, without saying a word, he cuts her twice from ear to throat with a box cutter. the suspect was wearing a surgical mask and gloves and

it was a pain she says she had never felt before. all she was thinking at that moment was she needed to get to a hospital as soon as possible. >> it was too fast. i didn't have time to react at all. >> reporter: the teen says the pain is bearable, but her mother who did not wish to appear on camera said to her interpreter that her daughter is trying to stay strong to protect her mother. >> she doesn't want mom to hurt, so she's saying everything is okay, but she said she is in pain. >> having a daughter of my own and over the weekend, when we saw security footages with the family, my wife was in tears as we saw her leaving the house, putting her book bag on, closing the door. these are moments that every single family knows what it's about. and this is every parent's worst nightmare. >> reporter: and the good news is doctors told the team today she's expected to make a full recovery, but it will be a long road ahead. it will take about a year and she will likely need reconstructive surgery.

number 1 priority right now, and they have intensified patrols at businesses. hudson line on the metro north is back going again. metro north temporarily suspended stops after firefighters were called to an industrial facility adjacent to the station. reports of overheating alcohol tanks is what called firefighters out. that meant passengers already in the train had to find another way home. >> we couldn't get off the train but they took us here by bus. i see a bunch of police officers, fire trucks, and everybody seems to be walking around as this was nothing going on really. . >> hours later, the station eventually reopened but no word on what caused the industrial accident. a woman attacked in new jersey over a parking spot. plus, new images of a suspect wanted for robbing gwyneth parking lotrow's store in

suicide watch tonight for intentionally mowing down people on a busy stretch of a las vegas strip. lakisha hollowway facing a slew of charges, including a murder, telling investigators she was stressed out. she had run out of money and was living in a car with her three-year-old daughter. one woman was killed, at least 35 people were injured, and some critically. a woman in new jersey accused of attacking a pipe a woman she didn't know all because of a parking spot. 40-year-old kenya nicholas king

. police say king after the attack tossed the 15-inch pipe out her car window. she was arrested after she got stuck in traffic. new images tonight of a suspect wanted for a jewelry heist at gwyneth paltrow's pop- up store in the circle. bracelets and watches were stolen in a store called goop. it happened on december 5th. so far, no arrests. a hiker fell over a cliff in rockland county. news chopper was over the scene on hoof mountain. authorities say the hiker somehow lost his footing and tumbled down the mountain face before he became wedged up against the tree. >> we found a victim that was there by coordinates on our phone, gps from the control center. as we got out, he saw my truck and just started yelling for help to let us know where he

>> it took rescuers three hours to secure the hiker, get him into a stretcher and bring him safely down the mountain. another treacherous mountain rescue in new jersey. this one, not another sharp drop from a mountain but a bear with sharp teeth. a boy scout leader lowering himself into what he thought was an empty cave when he was attacked by a bear. the man's son and two friends, all of them boy scouts in the troop called 9-1-1 and used food to lure the bear out. the man suffered lacerations but we are told tonight he is going to survive. she was once the first daughter. now she says she's going to welcome her second child. chelsea clinton announcing she's pregnant again. the 35-year-old said she plans to step up her presence on the campaign trail with her mother. not sure how the pregnancy will affect that plan. hillary tweeting, we're so excited to meet our second grandchild. a major space travel milestone tonight, an unmanned rocket booster returned to land

space-x sent the rocket soaring toward orbit with 11 small satellites. no small feat. then the company outdid itself landing the 15-story leftover represented a tremendous success for the company looking to drive launch pods down and open up space to more people. >> try, try again. had some bad experiences and they kept trying. >> yeah, keep going for it. >> that was also the crowd after they saw the accuweather forecast. >> how warm it's going to be on christmas. talking about breaking records, we could actually either meet or beat the '75 record. >> that's the all-time december high, that's the great shot at it. we have that winter blast this weekend. already started making snow and it's going to be very challenging. the empire state building has been a light show. looking beautiful in christmas colors, at 56 degrees. west wind has been busy keeping our temperatures up in the mid- 50s and not dropping.

much tonight. the hi, 56, running 15 degrees above average. hit this during the evening hours and we'll be talking about record highs all week long. fast forwarding to the weekend, we actually get back into the 50s. sunday looking like the better day. 56 degrees, even a little sun and rain. saturday will be very damp. rewinding to right now. 56 in the story, 56 in elmhurst and 52 in fort wadsworth. temperatures in the hudson valley have come up into the upper 40s. a chill in monticello right now. a change since 6:00. i put a couple of showers at 8:00 a.m. they're mainly northand west. a chance of off and on rain from late morning all the way through late afternoon and then we actually dry out as we head into the evening commute, which is good news, even breaks in the clouds later on. lots of clouds right now, some showers over duchess and sullivan have departed but there are a couple of showers off to the west. big high offshore.

summer. look at all rain with the warm temperatures. initially tomorrow we'll get into some of this. it's all this moisture here from the gulf of mexico and eventually from the atlantic that will combine and come right up the coast and get us on wednesday from late morning into early evening and that could really be an entry to a rainfall right there. futurecast into tomorrow morning. the showers will be north and west. i wouldn't be surprised if there's a couple of showers south and east of 287. the main rain would be northwest new jersey, north of i-84. all bets are off mid-day into the afternoon. mild around 60 and clouds tomorrow night, drying out into the evening commute. it's mostly cloudy and mild as we start the day. 53, rain is north and west and occasional rain for everyone. cloudy and milder, 62, sunset at 4:31. areas of fog after the rain comes to an end, fog will be an issue for holiday travel on

the seven-day, i want to show you the futurecast. 6:00 to 8:00 in the morning is not a lot of rainfall but it is getting steadier into mid- afternoon. it's a good stoking. thursday morning or by thursday morning, there could be an inch or two of rainfall. that is likely to be shattering a record of 73. we talked about 75 on christmas day. you're looking at 62 degrees. that's the sunniest day of the stretch because we get back some rain on saturday. maybe a couple of breaks in the clouds on sunday, 56. and monday doesn't look bad, but we're still way above average at 52 degrees. the warmest december on record is a lock looking at the next week ahead. >> okay, thanks, lee. could your dental habits impact your risk of breast

a dangerous high-speed chase led by a teenager and his little sister all caught on camera. dash cam shows a car driving erratically in michigan over the weekend. at the wheel, a 13-year-old boy. riding shot gun, his eight-year- old sister. the kids took off on foot but quickly caught. the boy may face charges. in tonight's health alert, a possible link between gum disease and breast cancer. new studies suggest middle aged and older women with gum disease are more likely to develop breast cancer than those without gum disease. the risk increase was most pronounced for women with gun disease who smoked cigarettes or who had quit smoking within the past 20 years. chi poltle, another e. coli outbreak. five people have been sickened by a new outbreak in several states out west that began last
