father thomas rosaca. >> merry christmas. >> merry christmas to you. >> the pope inaugurated this year of mercy and called christmas the feast of god's infinite mercy. >> that's right and called christmas a feast of tenderness, mercy, kindness, goodness. this has been a consistent theme in pope francis' message from beginning but christmas more than anything when you stop and look at the whole story, its origins, the simplicity, the vulnerability of god, the way that god chose to enter the world, it really is not a form of con dedescension but tenderness and mercy reminds me of pope francis meeting with the families in philadelphia and gives that incredible teaching on a saturday night and said where did gauze choose to send his son, to be in a business or big enterprise or send him to some factory and office building, no, he sent him to a family because the family was the source of love and a family
7:08 am
very powerful message especially for this christmas. >> and what a jolt the pope sent on his mission here to america this year. it was almost thrilling. >> it was a great gift to the people of america, but also to the people of the world. i mean you and i both covered it. we were there moment by moment and as i think back to those moments entering the congress of the united states, speaking at the united nations, ground zero, who could ever forget those kids that were singing about peace. i mean, pope francis brought us all back to our origins and called us to our greatness then, of course, when he mentioned those four individuals in his address, the special session of congress, i had tears in my eyes, you know, who would think that you hear the pope, the pope of the holy see speaking about dorothy day and abraham lincoln and martin luther king and calling us back to who we are. >> what a gloss on american history that speech was.
7:09 am
>> on many different levels, there's been impacts. i had the privilege of being with the pope every day during the month of october during the synod of bishops and referred to that visit. for him he was touched by the simplicity, the warmth and welcome and vibrancy of the american church. and of the cuban church, as well but i hi here in america it helped us all to realize that the pope is still of great interest to people. all of the media stopped and covered that visit so there was a great success there, but also the simplicity and profundity of the message no matter where he spoke he went right to the core of things and everybody could understand what he said. i've had priests talk to me since the visit, priests in the united states, priests in canada, others and they've said, you know, people were so moved that they've come back to confession, people are coming to the sacraments, people are giving the church a second chance. >> he underscored the message by driving around in that will i will fiat. >> it's simplicity, it's
7:10 am
and the core. >> what is your hope for the new year. >> my personal hope for the new year we hear once again the message of the angels on christmas, glory to god in the highest and peace on earth to the people whom god favors and the world needs peace. this is the worst i've seen the world in my short lifetime filled with tension and fear, so i hope that once again we can all be committed to peace, i also hope that as the pope sat in philadelphia on benjamin franklin parkway the lord came into the family because the family had its doors open and none of us out fear motivated by rhetoric would shut our doors to strangers and we know that there's this massive movement of refugees across the face of the earth, let us not be afraid that we can welcome those who are strangers because at one point in our lives we were all those wandering refugees seeking a home. that would be my deepest hope and that we all come back to our simplicity and the core of who we are as human beings.
7:11 am
the world that he gave us his only son. the pope helps us to focus on the world that god so loved and at christmas we focus on the son that god gave us, this wonderful incredible gift. >> thank you very much. merry christmas. >> merry christmas, george. >> for any working parents the holidays are a challenging time but for one group of working moms, this season is especially difficult to balance and i know you have that for us, ginger. >> talking about the group the rockettes. they are women who dance four shows a day up to six days a week all while also playing mom. well, some of them and i spent the day with run rockette who has three little ones and gave me advice on how to get a leg up on the work/life balance. >> want this one? >> reporter: like working moms the world over, nicole baker is forever trying to balance the needs of her kids with career demands and never does the mom of three work harder to balance it all than now, the holidays are her busiest season. it's when she really kicks

8:16 am
so this morning we're giving you the gift of great advice from our friend jane bugging ham author of "the modern girl's guide to life" with us to tell us how to survive the holidays with grace and good humor. the number one piece of advice. >> the number one piece of advice, remember you're there to be there and be with your family and be present so as horrible and stressful in those moments you want to wring their necks, take five minutes, go into the other room and pause and go back in with grace and kindness. >> such a great piece of advice. >> that's always good. >> count to ten my mom used to say. chances are you will not say what you wanted to say after those ten seconds pass. all right, so we're going to play a little game now. we love a game even on christmas. so here's how it's going to go. it's called the modern girl's guide to surviving the holidays. jane will give us an awkward scenario and we three have to guess the right way to handle it, a, b or c. one completely inappropriate.
8:17 am
>> okay so your first awkward situation is you're given a gift that is obviously regifted. okay. so how do you handle it, you accept it graciously and ignore that it was regifted. b, you point out that it was a regift and you make a huge rude scene about it, or you acknowledge that it's a regift but express your gratitude? >> you're all wrong. all right. here's the thing -- >> i'm kidding. >> if it's obviously a regift, it's going to be that elephant in the room. it could be but you sort of want to say -- >> you have to say it. >> you have to say it. >> no. >> i'm not good with that. >> it's going to hang between you. someone gives you a gift but you don't have one for them. that happens a lot so you totally fake it and you go, oh, my god, i just forgot your gift and -- >> your gift is coming. >> it's in the mail, right? you accept the gift and then you just apologize. i'm so sorry, i didn't have one
8:18 am
or you kind of blame them and you sort of go, we didn't talk about it, right? i didn't know we were -- >> i know you'll say this is the right one but this is what i would do. you're right, oh, wait, you're not right. >> you're right. you accept the gift from them and then apologize and say, i'm so sorry and i didn't know we were giving gifts. >> you should always be truthful but i'm -- >> i would run immediately to starbucks and buy a gift card. >> you're a good human being. much. you guys can get even more of jane's holiday survival guide on our website, jane, that was really fun. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> i learned a lot. carey. i think we know a little song she sings. she is the best-selling female musical artist of all time and this has become a holiday
8:19 am
discuss her new book and how her and her kids are spending the holiday and secrets behind her biggest song. all i want for christmas is you >> all i want for christmas is you is one of the all-time best-selling songs christmas and otherwise, 14 million copies plus sold around the world. it was your dream for this to become a christmas classic. >> people talk to me about listening to that song in the middle of the summer. it's kind of amazing to me because i wrote it just out of love for christmas. when i look back on it ever never knew what it would become. kind of like my most famous song. >> it is christmas and for those who want to share this love of this song with their children this book, it's beautiful. >> thank you. >> it's the lyrics to the song. >> yes. kuroda. book. >> we wanted to make it so kids could look at it even if they've never heard of me they respond to the song. this is like my caricature of myself but a little girl version
8:20 am
something nice to share with my own kids, as well. they saw it when i wasn't there and picked up the book and so cute. the book. >> they didn't saw it but saw it when this came to the house and picked it up on their own and started look ging at it. >> that's the best audience. >> let's talk. what's christmas like at mariah carey's house. >> christmas is quite the affair. santa claus comes every year. he's my good friend. real raineindeer are there, as well. >> when do you start decorating? >> i cheat and have somebody who helps me then we do our own little tree, as well too. >> what's at the top of your christmas list this year. >> i want everybody to have a -- have fun and, you know, peace on earth. christmas. any plans for new music? >> always new music. it's always something brewing. >> am i hearing another christmas classic could be coming from miss mariah carey? >> well, i mean, you never know.
8:21 am
want to just pop on my instagram and check us out during the holidays. it's festive. i'm the queen of festivity. what can i say? >> i'm excited about being inspired by you. mariah, thanks as always for dropping by. >> i know all i want for christmas is the "pop news." >> ah, thank you, amy. i shall deliver now and start with some santa claus news. you know, he's barely recovered from his busiest night and already back to work this morning, christmas mvp is heading from the sleigh to the stadium for his next gig. there he is, promoting the nba's christmas day games, of course. >> that's what christmas is all about. >> nothing says christmas like -- >> the nba. >> the nba, the folks at espn gave us this video of father christmas officially declaring himself a free agent. it's making some of the game's biggest starts like james harden a little nervous. take a look. >> santa, there's a naughty and nice list. you know, he also has a nationality list. >> i didn't ask for this.
8:22 am
they said, santa, with your skills so tight, won't you guide our team tonight? >> sweet and santa has a mean three-pointer. the games on abc and espn begin with the new orleans pelicans versus the miami heat. noon eastern time. >> good game. >> good game. >> you know, santa with attitude. that's -- >> i know. >> christmas. >> talking santa. >> he's grumpy. he's been up all night >> that's true. he still got game. also in "pop news," they say it's the thought that counts when it comes to christmas presents but clearly some aren't thinking at all when it comes to the wrapping of those. there's a gift bag with a very large present stuffed inside. i don't know if you can make that out there. there's a family that tried to wrap a dog and then check this out. this is what we call the minimalist. that would be i guess just brown paper bags and duct tape. >> yeah. >> just going -- i like this, they ran out of the polka dot
8:23 am
they drew the polka dots on the actual box in an everyday to conceal their lack of paper and this is the wrong holiday, fyi. a for effort. >> it was in a bag. >> it is in a bag. >> and then i don't know what that says. oh, it's -- >> hobo santa. >> oh, no, i didn't want to do that. oh, will. there's one more i did appreciate. i would be happy to receive this even in a sock. it's a bottle of wine. thank you very much. >> dirty sock too but that's okay. >> robin is looking at that very disturbed. nothing says christmas like a bottle of wine stuffed in a sock. finally as we have mentioned it's christmas so this keeps giving a video compilation of cats versus cucumbers. we did not realize that cats are terrified of cucumber.
8:24 am
>> these are real videos -- >> oh, wow. >> a compilation on youtube that -- >> is this real. >> this is all real. when cats see a cucumber. they jump. and -- we have not conducted our "pop news" investigation on this, i am working on it. i'm trying to get funding from george stephanopoulos because it's going to take several weeks and many crews but i will be back to you with -- >> all for this. >> all families are trying this. >> can you do a phone-in with dan harris. if we got him on the phone -- >> he'll be like, yo, cats, i that is "pop news." merry christmas.

8:30 am
little garlic in them, as well so if you don't have leeks, you can just use onion then most of all the time you have bacon in the refrigerator. you can crisp that up. >> so now you created that. >> yes, a little cheese. >> parmesan -- >> parmesan and a little cheddar cheese and grated nutmeg, a little and salt and pepper. >> mixed up and then dollop in each. >> now so what happens, 350 degrees, guys, you take the filling, just like this and you're going to put it right in your little pod like that. they took about 45 minutes in the oven. you got to watch them. they're nice and golden brown. so there's that. >> all right. >> yes, i am ready for the spicy -- >> macadamia, walnuts, peanuts and almonds. simple. what happens is this, you're going to take a little one egg white. >> okay.
