this happened rites after midnight we hit 66 degrees, and yesterday of course we had the warmest christmas eve in the lower 70s. right now we're struggling a little bit around 60, still super mild. it's because of some of the fog around. 66 the warmest christmas. last year was mild as well, 62. we had a little rainfall. the fog rolled in, a bank came into lower manhattan. visibility is down a little bit and holding temperatures in place, especially city and coast. we're around 60. i think we could get 3, maybe 4 more degrees, probably not back to 66. we are in belmar, wrightstown is 65. we're seeing more sunshine off to the north. pretty incredible, how about zero visibility at jfk, yet 8 miles at laguardia and unlimited at white plains. you can see how the low visibilities are really confined to the coastline, and then we're starting to see nicer weather inland. there's another 2 or 3 hours where the clouds can thin out, and then rainfall is moving in from the south and west. i think it could be here by the

look at the planner for central park, showing rainfall after 5 or 6:00 into the early evening hours. the umbrella and raincoat for christmas dinner. you can see on the futurecast south of i-78 by 5:00, a decent rainfall during the early evening hours before it pushes away. we'll look at the weekend there's any more record warmth in it, then a little winter chill down the road. thanks lee. cleanup is underway for many who survived this week's deadly storms in the south and midwest. unseasonably warm weather helped spawn two dozen tornadoes that swept across seven states. 14 people were killed in mississippi, tennessee and arkansas. the line of storms continued east dumping rain that flooded roads in georgia and alabama. now to christmas 2015, so many christmas activities here and around the world. we're going to begin here in new york city. for some in our area christmas morning a jammed st. patrick's cathedral at midnight where new

york cardinal tim dolan led mass this morning as well. our mallory hoff was there. >> thousands attended christmas morning mass at st. patrick's cathedral, cardinal timothy dolan quoted a holiday favorite. >> it's a wonderful life. i think of that legendary christmas movie with jimmy stewart, and i say to you it's a wonderful life. >> visitors took in the christmas moment. >> the cathedral is breathtaking. >> it's magnificent. >> it is so beautiful. >> a police presence surrounded the cathedral as people of all ages made their way inside. for some christmas mass at st. pats is an old tradition, for others a new one. >> me my girlfriend woke up really early like 5:00 in the morning to get down here, and you know we're just really glad that we got to see it. it was great. >> hours earlier more than 2,000 people attended midnight mass. cardinal timothy dolan welcomed refugees to the service but did not identify them. he welcomed siblings from el

salvador and a muslim family from ivory coast. >> i think you would unite with me as we celebrate this night when jesus was born away from home into a family that would soon flee as refugees for safety from an oppressive king into egypt, i think you would join me in welcoming those two families. >> a message of peace on earth during his annual address at the vatican. pope francis urged catholics to spread the church's message of mercy in a world torn by what he called murderous evil, war and poverty. he also issued a prayer for a quick peace process for syria and libya and that suffering of people from both nations soon comes to an end. he also denounced ongoing conflicts in africa, the middle east and ukraine. in the united kingdom, queen elizabeth and the royal family attended a traditional christmas day church service. people lined up before dawn outside st. mary mag delean church to get a glimpse of the queen. prince william and his wife kate were also there but their young children george and charlotte stayed home. the queen later delivered a christmas message. giving back a big theme to so many people on this day. mayor de blasio of new york city helping dish out food and toys for the national action network's christmas day

festivities for people in need. stacey sager at the event in harlem for us. >> reporter: hey, bill, we are insides national action network here in harlem. mayor de blasio actually just stepped up to the podium to talk, to address this crowd. you can see the reverend al sharpton standing next to him. this is always packed, alms plenty of children along with their families at this toy give away and celebration. you know, this year the reverend al sharpton is here serving up his annual christmas meal to those less fortunate. joining him is the mayor. earlier this morning we sat down. we spoke to many of the guests they're all ages. it really helps you put things in perspective because they are all so grateful despite endured. >> i was in a car accident, and it happened about like four years ago, and, you know, i'm just grateful to be alive you

it was deadly, the victim a teenager in the bronx. police say 16-year-old justin morris shot at least twice in the back last night at jerome avenue in the university heights section. he was part of two groups that got into some kind of argument. morris died at the scene. a 19-year-old recovering from three gunshot wounds. mr. is are still searching for the shooter. a mother and her two daughters in the hospital right now, two of them fighting for their lives after they were run over last night on long island. they were crossing the street in nassau county in the hamlet of hicksville. kala rama with the latest on their conditions. >> reporter: a mom and her two daughters are spending christmas day in the hospital recovering after being hit by a car. we're told that mom and her 4- year-old daughter are in critical condition. her 11-year-old in serious condition. we're told that the three were crossing old country road when they were hit by a gray honda accord headed south on new bridge road. the victims were apparently crossing near the intersection

when the crash happened just before 10 christmas eve. the driver who lives nearby did stop at the scene after this tragic crash and was being interviewed by police. the 43-year-old mom and her two kids were rushed to the hospital while police remapped the accident and closed off the streets for several hours. at this time no charges have been filed. police say they consider this a tragic christmas eve accident. in hicksville, kala rama channel 7 eyewitness news. it was decades ago the iranian hostage situation but now americans held hostage will be compensated. a look at how much the u.s. government is giving them. >> and it's typically the day to open all your gifts. what if you need to make some returns.

a painful anniversary this christmas day in jersey city. ten years ago tonight two cops killed in a tragic accident. shawn carson and robert wen died when their cruiser plunged off an open drawbridge and fell into the hackensack river. the officers crossing what was then known as the lincoln highway bridge responding to a call on christmas night 2005. they had no idea the bridge wasn't up and wasn't working. the bridge later renamed in their honor. christmas eve turned shopping -- christmas eve shopping turned deadly at a mall in north carolina. an off-duty police officer shot and killed a teenager there after authorities say the teen pointed a gun at the officer. police say the shooting happened after two groups of people began fighting at the mall in charlotte. shots were fired during the fight sending shoppers running into nearby stores. the officers who shot the 18- year-old was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

tragedy overseas killing more than 100 people who just wanted to cook christmas dinner. a tanker truck exploded at the gas plant in nigeria. most of the victims people who wanted to fill their cylinders to cook for the holiday. eyewitnesses say a tanker truck ignited the blast when it left the plant without waiting after discharging fresh gas. the plant filled with thick black smoke, it took hours to get the fire under control. americans held hostage in iran decades ago now finally getting compensated. 53 americans were taken when an angry mob stormed the u.s. embassy in teheran back in 1979 as the world watched they were held for 444 days, released not coincidentally on the day for the first time. as part of the budget bill, each former hostage will get up to 4 1/2 million dollars. it's about $10,000 for each day of their captivity. the big ballpark in the

today, yesterday almost felt tropical, today slightly cooler. still really mild. we'll go outside where, you know, we've been plagued by low cloudiness. it's so localized right near the ground, just above it it's partly sunny in many locations away from the coast right now, new york city in some of the fog. even when you look, i'm just going to put a closeup camera on columbus avenue. it looks bright out. this is with a really low sun angle. the sun comes through from time to time. this little drizzle over parts are thicker. a northwest wind with a westerly component may be enough dry that we can get a few more degrees out of this. i don't think we're getting back to 66 this afternoon. there's the high right there. the record low was 1 below in 1980s. look at these normals which we've been nowhere near over the past couple of weeks. 40 over 29. we haven't even been below freezing the entire season in new york city. look at our temperatures in the hudson valley, 62 doing well in white plains with partial

sunshine. 64 belmar good visibility. 59 in islip, drizzle reported at newark at the top of the hour. think we'll be dry for the most part in new york city until we get to early evening, then some rainfall is moving in. i can't rule out a touch of drizzle at times if the fog comes in and out. i also think there are thin spots in the clouds. this is the area cloudiness through staten island and monmouth t. is moving eastward. we have a window of a couple of hours before this next batch of rain off to starts to close in to southern new jersey. that would be after let's say 4:00 or so and rain could be approaching the five boroughs by 5 or 6:00 after sunset. let's see what the futurecast looks like. look at some heavier rainfall trying to get in by 3:00. be careful with your travel if you're headed to christmas dinner or out for the evening hours. you will get wet. best chance to see lighter rains would be north of new york city. the good news here is it looks like this tries to move out after midnight, and we see some

clear out like this futurecast says, not sure about that, probably be partly to mostly cloudy. we should have dry weather to start. the big thing you'll notice is how chilly it is only getting into the low 50s, a resurgence of showers late in the day. it's a merry mild christmas in the low and middle 60s. rain comes back tonight. probably a window where it's drier and occasional rain could come in late in the day. big story tomorrow is cooler, less emphasis now on the damp based on new information i'm looking at. fog at the coast. otherwise breaks of sun, a little rain coming in, especially south later in the day. it it a period of rain, and mostly cloudy. for tomorrow 52, much cooler and rain especially later in the day. i don't think it's a washout by any means. sunday we bump it back up to record highs again. i don't think there's much rain until later in the day coming in from the north and west. big drop on monday, rain on tuesday, could start out as an

distributed coats to 150 people this morning. the 27th annual coat drive was held at the new york city rescue mission in chinatown. recipients tried on coats and received help picking them out. >> full stomachs for those who cannot get their own food. volunteers putting meals together and setting them out for delivery. the meals are for the home bound and elderly. meals are also about offering companionship. >> it means human contact. it means as everybody who ever does it knows it gives -- it gives back more than it takes. >> this is the tenth year for this program. an arrest in the sexual assault in brooklyn. the man arrested not a man but a boy, 14 years old. police say his name is kevonte davis of westchester. he's the one seen in this surveillance video the night of december 16th.

the video taken shortly after a 33-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and robbed in her apartment building in east flatbush. the search is on for a woman accused of using a taser on a target employee on long island. police say victoria deon attacked a worker who tried to detain her for shoplifting yesterday afternoon. it happened in riverhead. the 33-year-old pictured right there is accused of tasing the target employee with a stun gun and taking off. the worker was treated at a nearby hospital. now to the weather. call it topsyturvy. >> go ahead. >> record warmth in our area and the snow, tons of it out west. >> meanwhile in the south flooding and cleanup after deadly tornadoes. meteorologist lee goldberg tracking it all. he's in the weather center. >> bill and lauren, we're very fortunate to be on the benign balmy side of this weather pattern. the battle zone going on in the middle of the country, look at the past 48 hours. what i put on are some of the storm reports, hundreds of them including 40 tornado reports just from wednesday. today we're looking at flooding

the fantasy sports website draft kings is suing the attorney general of illinois after she declared daily fantasy sports betting illegal in the state. illinois' attorney general said

draft kings and fanduel clearly constitute gambling. draft kings asked the court to declare that fantasy games do not constitute gambling in illinois and to nullify the attorney general's opinion. janet jackson postponing her current world tour because she says she's having surgery. the five-time grammy winner tweeting about the cancellation but not offering details about her surgery or what it's for. she says ticketholders including the february shows in newark and brooklyn will be honored in her words special way when the new schedule is announced. some kind of christmas present for the actor robert downey junior, jerry brown giving him a pardon for his drug conviction in 1996. he was convicted of felony drug possession after authorities found, heroin, cocaine and a gun in his car. since then the iron man star has gone on to become one of hollywood's highest paid actors. many lawmakers offer video holiday messages but one is

accused wisconsin state representative scott allen made some remarks convert to christianity. >> for those who may watch this who are not christians, i invite you to consider the hope offered by the prince of peace. >> in addition to the message itself, critics say that he should not have used state owned equipment to record the video and e-mail it to his constituents. when asked whether this was an issue of separation of church and state, allen said he's not quite sure but that his church was not involved in the production of the video. police in massachusetts say they have caught a grinch, green handed. officers say they found the grinch, oh, look at that, literally stealing christmas right in dartmouth. the green faced thief was taken to the police station, had his mug shot taken. this was all in good fun. police in dartmouth created this holiday themed parody of the tv show cops and post it had on youtube.

as we go through the early evening hours, this particular planner is depicting some showers after 6:00. our degree with that is going to be a very close call. some of our northern suburbs may escape the rain. you go to bradley beach and you'd be raining before that. maybe it's after 5:00 tonight. radar and satellite, clouds and thin spots north, a few sprinkles. ocean county, a little bit of everything here. then we're watching this big batch of rain, which it's going to be a close call. the northern edge is going to come right at new york city. it could stay at the south or get into new york city. it's going to be close. we'll have some rain in new york city, best chance, queens and staten island versus the bronx. if you'll watch this futurecast, milder in the afternoon hours, and notice how the rain, it gets close to staten island, and then this futurecast is depicting it to the south. i think it may be a little farther north than that. the steadier rains are monmouth and ocean county, south shore of long island as well. minimal rainfall, maybe a little bit of light showers in the northern suburbs.
