for emergency surgery. good evening. i'm sandra bookman. >> that little boy is in the hospital after surgery. >> he was hit by a stray bullet while in the back of the car. the bullets flew in jersey city. >> reporter: 18-month-old mina beshay is out of surgery, expected to survive. he was struck by a bullet in his right cheek and broken glass under his eye. it will leave scars, physical and emotional. >> received a phone call from the mom, she was crying. i couldn't even understand one word what she was saying. >> reporter: he was describing the frantic phone call after the 18-month-old was shot in the face. he is cousins with the baby's father. he said about a dozen shots were fired, striking the infant in the right cheek.

after under going surgery. doctors removed the bullet from his face. the infant's uncle says he arrived on scene before first responders. >> bleeding everywhere. in his face, everywhere his body. >> reporter: the bullet shattered the back window and hit the infant straped into a baby seat. his mother and grandfather were at the post office across the street when it happened, waiting in his car with his father, and next to him in the sister. home. so far witnesses have been noncooperative. >> i want to ask the mayor, that's your son, what are you going to do? >> reporter: the little boy is

his sister was unharmed, but we >> thank you. a fight breaks out at a long island mall that had a recent shooting. a witness tells us the fight in the food court led to panic. a store window appears shattered in video posted online. tensions are higher than usual because of a shooting earlier this week. in this case, business returned reports of injuries. tonight the search for a hit-and-run driver who killed a man in new jersey was crossing the street when he was killed last night at cedar lane and garrison avenue. police say he was hit by a large black suv. investigators say it may have heavy damage to the front passenger bumper.

the crash, you are asked to call police. two people are dead after a new jersey. it happened this morning. the two men inside the car died at the scene. their names have not been investigators believe speed may have been a factor in the crash. we are following a developing story out of texas. the northern part of the outbreak. at least four people have died from the storms. our afill in dallas says at least six tornadoes touched down in the dallas area and there are reports of missing people. homes leveled, churches and gas stations destroyed. west texas is dealing with blizzard conditions. where is that severe weather now? what changes are headed our way before the new year? meteorologist jeff smith has more. >> you can see several

one particularly strong one was over the community of garland, where some of the fatalities were recorded. this is now a flash flood situation in dallas and oklahoma. you can see the blizzard developing over the texas panhandle. one of the waves is approaching us overnight tonight. just with rain. not looking at severe weather around here. some steady rain moving into parts of western new jersey. 7:00in the morning temperatures up to 53 by that point. day tomorrow. i expect temperatures at least getting into the mid-60s by 2:00 in the afternoon as we break out into a little bit of sunshine before a couple more showers approach later in the day. we have winter weather in parts of the area next week. tense moments aboard a

fly to fort lauderdale. intense smoke forced passengers to leave before the plane even left the gate at laguardia. >> reporter: flight 196 was supposed to to leave at 11:00 in the morning. as pilots began to push back, on fire. white smoke. and then i said to my wife, i think the plane is on fire. she said, shut up, you're going to scare everybody on the plane. >> reporter: andrew, his wife and children were off to a florida vacation. they and more than 230 passengers and crew on board were told, get off. >> they said, everybody please leave the plane. we have to evacuate, and then panic ensued and everybody rushed for the door. they said leave your bag there. people were panicking, running for the door and eventually everybody got out.

passengers and crews sorting through carry-ons left behind. the airlines issued a statement saying the smoke came from the auxillary power unit. something sparked, creating the smoke, the unit automatically turned off. >> didn't fill up. just outside the plane. you could see visible plumes, like a lot, passing the window by. it wasn't, like, the smoke was inside the plane. it was on the outside. >> reporter: the airline spent several hours fixing the problem and we boarded the passengers and sent them to fort lauderdale. a number of passengers thought sunday. tonight investigators are trying to determine a motive for the murder-suicide of a family in new jersey. police found a 53-year-old man, his wife and 8-year-old daughter in their 17 floor edge

shot and killed his wife and daughter before pulling the gun on himself. we'll have much more on this and what else police found in that apartment coming up at 11:30. new at 11:00, a long island man sound asleep was shot today. the 20-year-old man was sleeping in his living room when seven bullets flew through the window early this morning. fortunately, no one was hurt. police are searching for suspects. also new tonight, security concerns in europe. police in austria are warning cities in other countries about a possible terror attack. it would involve explosives or guns and could happen between christmas and new year's eve. police did not name the cities that were warned, but did increase security in austria. chicago on edge tonight from a police shooting that left two people dead. one of them, 19-year-old

the other, his neighbor, a 55- year-old woman, a mother of five. investigators say an officer fired shots while responding to a domestic call early this morning. police say officers were confronted by a combative subject. the mother is speaking out, saying her son was troubled but not violent. >> he was having a mental situation. sometimes he'll get a little loud, but not violent. i was just with my son on christmas. i mean, i talked to him. i told him that he had to control his temper. but he wasn't violent. >> the chicago police department is already under investigation. federal investigation over the 2014 shooting death of 17-year- old laquon mcdonald. a mother arrested after a violent crash which sends two children to the hospital. >> the charges the mother is

again. little bit of rain overnight moving into the new york metro area. mainly parts of new jersey. empire state building still lit up in the nice holiday colors. 49 now. it's the lowest temperature that we've had all day. that win coming in from the east at 8 miles per hour. it wasn't the record-breaking warmth today, because we had more clouds and wind coming in off the water. 59 was our temperature after midnight last night it came close to the record of 63, which was set back in 1982. i think tomorrow we're easily going to break a record set in 1949. a batch of rain moving through tonight. that should exit by tomorrow morning. then some sunshine during the midday hours and that will allow for that record warmth to develop. highs middle and upper 60s across parts of the area, including new york city. wintry mix, this is something new that we haven't had to talk about so far this season. north and west of the city monday night, snow, sleet,

slippery tuesday morning commute. i think it's mainly rain in the city, but could begin as ice pellets before quickly going over to rain in the city and along the coast. 44 sussex. there's that wind coming in from the east and northeast off the ocean, keeping us a little bit cooler. here comes that rainfall moving across northern parts of new jersey. that will overspread the entire tonight. 7:00in the morning, maybe a lingering shower. then we start breaking out to some sunshine. brightening at least by late morning into the early part of the afternoon. that allows temperatures to respond nicely into the middle and upper 60s from new york city and points south and west. another batch of showers tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. monday significantly colder. that will set us up for monday night as the next system approaches. cold enough air north and west of the city to be a wintry mix and could be slippery,

off to florida after they saw smoke coming from the plane. topping our news, new details on a family tragedy in new jersey. >> three people were found dead inside their apartment on christmas night. the question is what provokeed the man to shoot his wife and daughter and turn the weapon on himself. >> reporter: investigators say evidence suggests 53-year-old michael stasko shot and killed his daughter before turning the gun on himself. police say his wife and 8-year- old daughter were killed on the 17th floor of their edge water apartment building. >> all three were within the bed in the couple's bedroom. it is definitely apparent to us the shootings took place in the bed. >> reporter: police got a call

concerned his sister, mrs. stasko, and her family had not arrived in missouri for their planned visit on christmas day. he couldn't reach them by phone. that's what prompted investigators to do a welfare check on the apartment. >> there were things in the apartment that would give one the indication that millie stasko looked lovingly upon her father. you see cards and holiday cards. >> reporter: investigators say the shots appear to have been fired between the evening of the 22nd and the morning of the 23rd. detectives believe a towel may have been used in front of the playing. shots. inside the apartment, presents under a tree. >> one always has to wonder what would possess anyone to do that? an innocent 8-year-old girl. i'm hopeful we'll find out the reason, because she deserves at least the public to understand what happened here.

>> reporter: a motive is still unclear. on long island a mother is accused of driving drunk after a crash that injured two young girls, one of them seriously. police say latonya mowar, her 8- year-old daughter and 6-year- old niece were in the car when it slamed into a utility pole in bay shore last night. the 6-year-old was thrown from the vehicle. the woman is facing charges. police continue to search for a man accused of shooting his wife feet from their sleeping children in the bronx. police say the 37-year-old and his wife were fighting inside their home in the williams bridge section when he pulled a gun on christmas eve. the victim's family said she had asked for a divorce. the 27-year-old victim was shot

been a wind coming in off the water and the cloud cover that kept us a little bit cooler, even though still well above average. but not the record-breaking warmth we had christmas eve and christmas day because of that cloud cover. you can see the rain coming in now, basically the northern third of new jersey, lower hudson valley and that will continue through about 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning off and on. this is an extension of a storm system that extends down to texas. you heard about the deadly tornadoes not too far from dallas. other side of the state they're getting a developing blizzard now in the panhandles of texas and oklahoma. amarillo area, 12 to 18 inches of snow expected. incredible. lows tonight here getting down to about 49 in the park. temperatures rising into the 50s overnight. highs tomorrow, little bit of sunshine midday. up to 68 degrees if you can believe it. even mid-60s to the north of the city. then this is even more unbelievable that we can go

just in the nick of time. she arrived and went into cardiac arrest. >> the feeling of losing your child right in front of you. >> reporter: you thought you were going to lose her? >> yes. >> yes. >> reporter: her heart wasn't doing anything? >> no. >> reporter: doctors performed cpr for 45 minutes. >> he told me, you know, we just have to look back, we have to appreciate these four and a half years that we had with her. >> reporter: doctors couldn't again. they put her on life support and sent her in a helicopter to a transplant center, thinking she'd need a new heart. >> thursday, friday, saturday, her heart wasn't doing anything. activity? >> nothing. absolutely nothing, no pulse. >> reporter: the sunday before christmas her parents asked friends around the world to say prayers for their daughter at mass. >> one in argentina, brazil, italy and one in miami. 11:00.
