sitting in his baby seat in a car that was parked outside a post office. police are still searching for the shooter. also in new jersey, two people dead after a shooting in a warehouse in patterson. shots fired early this morning on first avenue. the men who were killed are identified as 25-year-old fernando irby and 27-year-old kashief belfield. there was a crowd of about 30 people inside the warehouse when shots were fired. >> i heard a lot of commotion, people running up and down the street, cars, and then one of the employees came in and said i think i heard gunshots. >> we're told it's possible there may have been a rave party inside the warehouse at the time of the shooting. police are still searching for suspects. we are going to turn now to the weather. quite a foggy morning around the tri-state area. this is what it looked like from our camera in brooklyn. you can hardly see the skyline in manhattan. taking a live look now from

clearer, but this wild december weather continues from near- record warmth to the chance for a wintry mix. meteorologist jeff smith is tracking it all, of course. he joins us now with a first look at the weather. sandra, we came within 2 degrees of a record high, getting up to 61. clouds stopped the temperatures from rising too much. ironically, we talk about the near-record warmth and we have a winter weather advisory issued for areas north and west of the city for tomorrow night, right through tuesday morning for our next storm expected to come on in. in the meantime, we have rain issues to deal with overnight tonight, mainly during the evening hours. you can see on the radar picture a couple of light showers moving into northwestern parts of new jersey, parts of the mid-hudson valley. a juicier batch of rain over central pennsylvania, shifting off to the east during the next several hours. basically between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m., we get some showers moving from west to east across the tri-state. 8:00 p.m. temperature, down to about 55.

colder air moves in from the north. we're down to 40 by 7:00 in the morning. even down near freezing in the northern suburbs. temperatures don't rise much during the day. we have increasing cloud cover and by later on tomorrow night, you're looking at it right. there's snowflakes and mixed sleet pellets coming into parts of the area by midnight. it could be a mess for the northern and western suburbs for the tuesday morning commute. we'll detail that in your full accuweather forecast, coming up. >> thank you, jeff. just a quick note for everybody. the weather is impacting travel at area airports on a day when a lot of people are returning home from their christmas vacations. there are one-hour delays at both newark and kennedy airports. while weather also ripping through parts of texas, nearly a dozen people killed, when strong tornadoes swept through the dallas area. abc's jim ryan is in texas tonight with those details. >> that's it! oh, my god! that's it! that's it! >> reporter: pure panic as the storm rolled it. >> that's a tornado! >> reporter: under the cover of night.

spotted her attacker on the street. that led to bank's arrest. the parents of a high school football player from staten island who died after collapsing during practice is suing the city. 16-year-old miles kirkland died in 2014 after collapsing at curtis high school. the medical examiner said he died of hyper trophic cardiomyopathy. obesity was cited as a contributing factor. kirkland's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit, claiming a defibrillator wasn't readily available at practice. we've got two pretty big sports stories today. we'll start at the meadowlands, where the jets now control their own playoff destiny. it was a bizarre ending to this game. jets and patriots went to overtime, where the pats won the ot coin flip and elected to kick off. the jets get the ball and scored a touchdown, when ryan fitzpatrick finds eric decker. game over.

choosing to give the jets the ball. mistake. poor tactical decision, whatever. if the jets beat the bills next week, they are in the playoffs, period. also today, nfl quarterback peyton manning angrily denying accusations he used performance enhancing drugs in his return from injury. an al-jazeera documentary made the report. the owner at the center of the story sessegnon of this is true, but the strongest himself. >> time ended up being my best medicine, along with a lot of hard work. it really stings me, whoever this guy is, insinuating i cut corners, broke nfl rules in it's a joke. >> we'll have more on manning

. disappointment tonight for parishioners at a church in new jersey over the disappearance of a baby jesus statue from an outdoor nativity. it happened at st. clair church in clifton. it was discovered early this morning. the nativity was recently bought by parishioners and put on display for the first time last week. now that christmas gifts have been opened, many people will spend coming days returning some of those items,

>> good advice that could certainly be used. >> i preach that stuff about the gift cards to my kids all the time. got to use them! >> take them and use them yourself! >> that's the next step. there was a shortage of sunshine around here today, but really it was still pretty mild. >> very mild. we still came within 2 degrees of a record high, despite the fact we had fog and low clouds. had we seen any brightening in the city, that temperature would have propelled into the middle and upper 60s, which it did over parts of the jersey shore. got up to 65, 66 degrees down toward toms river. we head outside right now, still dealing with low clouds. top of the empire state building, obscured. you can't see the candy cane spire they have for the holidays. but do you see the red and the green. right now, temperature at 61 degrees. that's our high for the day. that wind coming in from the southwest at 7 miles per hour. again, that record was 63. we didn't quite make it. that was set back in 1949. average high this time of year is only 40, so way, way above that.

moving in during the next few hours and then clearing and chillier overnight, into the day tomorrow. that will set the stage for a wintry weather event tomorrow night, into early tuesday for areas north and west of the city. i think it's mainly rain in new york city, along the coast. it may mix with sleet initially, but then we're talking snow, sleet, freezing rain for a while. that can lead to icy spots north and west, even into the tuesday morning commute, especially along and north of i- 84, which i'll show you in a minute on future cast. 62 at laguardia. still down the shore where you had a little bit of brightening, just enough to get temperatures up in the mid-60s. 64 at toms river. even 60 on long island. temperatures cooler, if you can call it that. 55 up toward newberg. here's the radar picture right now, showing a couple of light showers moving across parts of new jersey along i-80, also a few over the mid-hudson valley. there's a more significant batch of rain over pennsylvania. that will be translating off to the east during the next several hours. definitely grab your umbrella

to dinner through 8:00 or 9:00 this evening, because there will be a batch of showers moving on by. that's where the cold front is. behind the front, much cooler tonight and tomorrow morning. down to 40 by 7:00 in the morning. closer to freezing north and west. temperatures don't go anywhere during the day, probably staying in the low 40s, close to normal for this time of year for a change, staying in the 30s north and west. we'll start with some sunshine, then clouds increase. dry during the daylight hours of tomorrow. i think by midnight tomorrow night there's a wintry mix of precipitation already developing areas west and north of new york city. but in the city and along the coast, temperatures are well above freezing, so we're not looking for any icy roads in the five boroughs. by 3:00 a.m., the precipitation becoming heavier. but north and west, it's a whole different ball game. temperature of 29 by that point at newberg and staying below freezing into the first part of the tuesday morning commute. that's why especially along and north of i-84 there could be sleet, freezing rain and certainly some icy, untreated roadways. that all goes over to rain

tapers off during the middle part of the afternoon. snowfall, really almost a nonissue in and around the city. there could be a coating to an inch or so well north before it transitions over to sleet and freezing rain. then eventually rain. accuweather forecast for tonight, a few showers this evening. otherwise, clearing and chillier. we're down to about 40. some sun giving way to clouds. much cooler tomorrow. we'll be lucky to get up to 44. rain arriving, maybe briefly mixing with sleet at new york city and at the coast. wintry mix north and west can accumulate a little bit before going over to rain by tuesday morning, in the near north and western suburbs. the lowdown to about 38 in midtown. staying well above freezing here in the city. during the day tuesday, rain tapering off by midafternoon. early mix well north and west, high up to 50 eventually. another batch of rain coming in later wednesday. it's a cloudy day. doesn't look like heavy rain. showers, 54. mild breaks of sunshine thursday, new year's day. 40s for the ball drop in times square.

. football at the meadowlands today, works out so very well for the jets. for the patriots, not so much. rob and sandra, there were two big reasons for the jets to go out and win today. the first? they had to get a victory to keep alive any shot at a wild card playoff spot. and then second, if you're gangrene, you just always want to beat the patriots. today, the division rivals clashing at metlife. pats trying to secure homefield advantage in the playoffs. no touchdowns until just before the half to make it 10-3 jets. big day for marshall. he set the jets record for receptions in a season, also had a pair of touchdowns.

to get back in this one. fitzpatrick, the fumble. collins goes 14 yards for the score, making it 17-13. jets held tom brady and company fourth. james white gets in to tie the game, so we go to overtime. flip. pats win, confusion. fitzpatrick hooked up with eric decker to end it. 26-20, jets win. so they are still in the wild card hunt. it was supposed to be a crucial game with playoff implications for both the giants and vikings, as they clash tonight on sunday night football. instead, big blue was out before it even begins. last night, redskins clinched the nfc east title, ensuring the giants will miss the post season. and peyton manning hasn't played in over a month because of foot injury. today, he's back in the

the veteran quarterback, now accused of using human-growth he's not happy about it. >> reporter: peyton manning immediately came out and said this report is complete garbage. he's one of several athletes named in an al-jazeera documentary set to air tonight. according to the report, supply of human-growth hormone in 2011 while he was recovering from his neck surgery. a former employee at an indianapolis antiaging clinic claims the hgh was sent to the future hall of famer under his wife's name, ashley manning. the pharmacist later recanted his story to al-jazeera and espn, saying he made it all up. the broncos quarterback spoke with espn, firmly denying the allegations. >> disgusted is really how i feel. sickened by it, that i'm not sure i understand how someone came make something up about somebody, admit that he's made it up and yet somehow it gets published in a story. >> reporter: both manning's former team the colts and current team the broncos have

still not clear what caused the 88-year-old driver to lose control. and we just learned that a baby shot in the face by a stray bullet in jersey city will not leave the hospital today. the boy was shot yesterday, sitting in a baby seat in a parked car. he is expected to make a full recovery. police are still searching for the shooter. we'll hear from the child's father, coming up at 6:00. at least 11 people are dead after strong storms and tornadoes ripped through the dallas, texas area. there are reports of as many as a dozen twisters around north texas. but meteorologists are still working to confirm exactly how many touched down. good evening again, everyone. i'm sandra bookman. >> i'm rob powers in tonight for joe. we are just a few days away from the big ball drop in times square. more than a million people will pack into times square to ring in the new year. >> but there is no holiday or vacation for those putting the big show today. we go live to times square with the details. andy? >> reporter: sandra and rob,

police custody in maryland. police tracked down raphael herrera yesterday. he's accused of shooting his wife on christmas eve inside their home, just feet from their sleeping children. the 27-year-old victim is recovering after being wounded in the arm and neck. the children were not hurt. grief counselors will be available at an elementary school in new jersey to help students deal with the murder of a classmate over holiday break. the bodies of 53-year-old michael statsco, his wife melissa and their 8-year-old daughter melee were found on christmas at a building in edgewater. police say the husband shot his wife, daughter, then killed himself. counselors will be on hand for melee's classmates when they get back to class on january 4. anger and frustration in chicago today. police shot and killed a 19- year-old black man, while responding to a 911 call this weekend. a 55-year-old mother was caught in the gunfire and also died.

abc's alex perez is in chicago with more. >> reporter: calls for justice today in the death of betty jones, a 55-year-old mother. >> why you got to shoot first and ask questions later! >> reporter: jones' family wants to know why she died from a chicago police bullet. the mother of five opened her door, as cops confronted 19- year-old college student quinton la gear. >> i'll i'm tempted to feel hate for the chicago police officers, i think we have to show compassion. >> reporter: police say jones and accidentally and tragically killed. officers were responding to a domestic disturbance at la gear's home, a two-story house shared with jones. the teen reportedly threatened his father with a bat. >> seven times, my son was shot. this needs to stop. no mother should have to bury her child. no mother. >> reporter: the shooting,

already-beleaguered police and city officials. two days ago, protesters shut down parts of the magnificent mile, the high end shopping district of chicago. the demonstration, part of the backlash against other deadly police shootings, including black teen laquan mcdonald. >> if you are afraid of these streets to the point that you got to shoot first, you need to turn your badge in. >> reporter: so far, mayor rahm emanuel has resisted calls to resign, releasing a statement saying, any time the police use force, the public deserves answers. regardless of the circumstances, we all grieve any time there is a loss of life in our city. >> i want the mayor to understand that this is a message to you. you failed us before. but now it's your time to step up or step down. >> reporter: alex perez, channel 7 eyewitness news, chicago. federal authorities investigating a possible hate crime in texas, after a suspicious fire gutted a mosque.

islamic officials say there's been a recent spike in vandalism at mosques. overseas tonight, iraqi forces have recaptured a key part of the embattled city of ramadi from the hard-fought victory comes after intense fighting. officials say iraqi soldiers defused a large number of booby traps and rescued more than 100 families that were trapped in the combat zone. iraqi forces are also making advances in other parts of the city. in syria, at least 17 isis militants have been killed in airstrikes. syrian government forces booby trapped several farm buildings late yesterday. they detonated explosives, as eyes rebels gathered in the area.

mild on new year's day, 54. for the big ball drop, temps in the 40s. only up to 42 by next saturday, so it will kind of feel like early january, but still not quite down to normal by then. >> okay. thank you, jeff. a high school choir on long island is preparing for an overseas performance. >> we're not talking just anywhere overseas. they have been asked to perform at the vatican. long island reporter kristen thorn met up with members of the glen cove select choral in nassau county. >> reporter: this heavenly sound will be echoing through the vatican. these students with the glen cove high school choir will be singing for the pope. >> every asks, are you excited, are you ready? honestly, it hasn't hit me. i still don't believe it's real. >> reporter: the group is used to high-profile performances.

for the obamas at the white house. >> reporter: but this upcoming performance has some new challenges. they will be the only group leading the entire papal mass in latin. >> the amount of music the kids had to learn in such a short amount of time has been -- it's unprecedented. >> it took a lot of time, but it's all come together now. >> reporter: the group began fund-raising in july and so far has raised more than $40,000. some of the donations coming from as far as pennsylvania. >> the community, the parents, everybody really believes in our kids and i'm just grateful to be a part of it. >> reporter: it's been a lot of work, practicing every day, sometimes up to four hours. >> we've been working since middle of july and we are just nonstop, song after song. >> a little sharp. >> reporter: but they all know it's worth it. in glen cove, kristen thorn, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> lot of hard work.

. tonight, an eyewitness news exclusive. a fast-thinking doctor and creative surgery helped save a long island teenager's singing career. eyewitness news reporter andy field brings us the story. here's a picture of my -- >> reporter: she wants to sing for a living, but jenna gurkey has a problem with her tongue, making it harder to sing or talk. today, that tangle is gone. >> oh, my god, it's insane. it was amazing to come back from the first surgery and know that i can eat and drink and sing and there's a good chance it won't bleed. >> reporter: that avm started bleeding and mt. sinai doctor did a procedure he had pioneered, snaking a catheter through her groin, up an artery to plug the leaking blood, using a sort of crazy glue. >> the blood is not going in there anymore?
