are these crimes connected? that is the question for investigators tonight. >> five churches in four neighbors towns have had their statues stolen in the last two days. diocese is hoping that the police can track down the culprit.

cath lin church in lindhurst, the nativity scene is lit up outside with mary and joseph, but police say baby jesus may have been swiped on his own birthday. the three wise men come bearing gifts, but at the nativity scene outside the roman catholic church in lindhurst, they have no one to give those gifts to, because someone has been stealing baby jesus statues from various new jersey towns and with several baby statues missing from their mangers, some say jesus is missing these thieves. five churches in total have been hit, our lady of sorrows church, along with the queen of peace church in north arlington, and baker hart church in lindhurst. police say they got the call on the 26th so baby jesus could have been stolen on christmas day. many are left wondering who would do this. >> maybe they're against the religion. >> people that are crazy and

>> reporter: a spokesperson for the archdiocese in a statement says, quote, it is distressing that this is taking place this we are hoping this is nothing more than a prank. we hope police will find out who's doing this. . >> they have to bring back the statues, because that's messed up. >> reporter: we've had some tell us whoever did this really needs jesus in their lives. well, they got it, perhaps more than they deserve. in lindhurst, stefan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. a toddler shot in the face by a stray bullet in jersey city is expected to recover. but the 18-month-old will have to stay in the hospital at least one more time because he's running a high fever and in pain. he underwent surgery to remove bullet glass from his cheek. he was sitting in a parked car next to him and his five-year- old sister. the father says she's traumatized.

she fears the glass is going to be broken at home. she is worried about in my bedroom, please, i want to go to your room. she's scared. >> police are still searching for the shooter. they say witnesses are not cooperating. meanwhile, jersey city mayor steven philip is speaking out tonight about gun violence. he says, quote, we continue to hire additional officers and deploy more officers on foot patrols, but the challenge is daunting without larger changes to the overall system, such as restricting access to guns by criminals. right now, there are long lines and big crowds at airports around the country as people head home from the christmas holiday. a viewer sent us some photos from la guardia airport tonight. passengers there reported canceled flights through the bad weather and other parts of the country. around here today, we saw near record highs, but that is all about to change. you could see a wintry mix

here with details and the first look at the accuweather forecast. >> sandra, we already have winter weather advisories north and west of the city through tuesday, more specifically north and west of i-287. first, we'll have cold air in place after the near record highs today. the cold front is moving through, lingering showers over the jersey shore that will be exiting momentarily. north and west already down to 34 and monticello monticello already get getting into the 50s. it's going to be a wintry mess out there. here's what to expect. sleet will mix in with rain at the onset monday night. freezing rain and sleet could be prolonged and lead to icy spots north and west. i think the transition to all rain occurs everywhere during the day on tuesday.

specifics, including the futurecast coming up in the full accuweather forecast. a weather system that has spawned tornadoes and blizzard have killed as many as 43 people in 11 states. 11 people have died in texas, nearly 1500 homes damaged. meanwhile, parts of texas, oklahoma and new mexico digging out from a blizzard that has many roads impassable right now. in missouri, wide-spread flooding has killed at least eight people. most were in cars swept away by flood water. take a look at this dramatic video. a driver in westchester county accidentally hits the gas and slams into a store. that driver also hit a customer inside. tonight, that man is recovering at the hospital. his family is sharing new details about the crash and his injuries. eyewitness news reporter malory hoff has the story from new rochel. >> reporter: the driver of an suv appears to be parking and

the man is knocked to the ground. family says the man in the video is jeff weaner, a new rochelle resident in his 70s. >> he stopped in there to purchase a lottery ticket. >> reporter: he has a deep cut on his leg and ankle broken in three places. >> you've spoken with his cousin's wife. >> yes. >> how is he doing tonight? >> he's extremely shaken up. he's in a lot of pain, waiting to undergo surgery and has been transferred to mount sinai in manhattan. he's scheduled to undergo surgery in the morning. it's a very hard time for him and his family in light of the holidays. >> reporter: the woman driving the suv was 88 years old. she was initially trapped inside but was not hurt. >> it's frightening. >> reporter: gary philips can be seen in the video. he was next to weaner when he was hit. >> he knocked me back. >> reporter: philips was fine and came to his aid. >> he said he was hurting so i

just complained about his leg. >> reporter: police are looking into the crash. >> the police department are investigating the exact cause of the incident, what happened with the driver, what they may have been doing at the time. it's a long road ahead as far as legal steps. our focus is on his recovery. >> reporter: the store manager tells me the store just opened three months ago. he says they have insurance, and they'll be fine. he's more concerned about the people involved. he says this could have been much worse had more people been inside. in new rochelle, malory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. police in brooklyn are investigating an accident between an mta bus and a van. it happened at 7:30 tonight at the intersection of east fourth street and avenue n. two people had minor injuries headed to the hospital. that crash is under investigation. two people are dead after a shooting in a warehouse in patterson. shots were fired early this morning on first avenue. the men who were killed are

fernando irby and 27-year-old kashif bellfield. police say there was a crowd of about 30 people inside that warehouse when the shots rang out. . >> i just heard a lot of commotion, people running up and down the street, cars, and then one of the employees came in and said, i think i heard gunshots. >> we're being told it may have been a rave, a party inside the warehouse at the time of the shooting. tonight, police are still searching for suspects. a suspicious death in westchester county now under investigation. a 39-year-old man's body was found last night in catona, part of the town of bedford. the victim's identity and cause of death are not released. police are asking anybody who may have seen a suspicious vehicle or person on oak road early yesterday morning, to give them a call. new at 11:00, new york city police are on the lookout for an armed robber who held up an h & m clothing store on the upper east side. it happened shortly before midnight last night at the h & m on east 86th street.

the funeral will be at st. patrick's cathedral. visitation for kofka will be at the miller place. both men were killed alongside four other service members during a suicide bombing last week in afghanistan. police on long island are trying to figure out who threw injuring two people traveling in a car below. it happened last night on the meadowbrook parkway in uniondale. the brick smashed through the windshield of a bmw striking the driver and the front-seat passenger. the 21-year-old driver suffered bruising to his right shoulder. the 22-year-old in the passenger seat suffered an injury to her left eye and other bruises to the face. following the shooting deaths of two people by police in chicago, the mayor is calling for the police department to review its crisis intervention training. 19-year-old college student quintonio legreer and 55-year-

this time tomorrow night, there will be some rain and sleet areas north and west. there could be some slippery and treacherous roads even for the tuesday morning commute as you head along and north of i- 84. as we head outside right now, skies are clearing out for the empire state building. the visibility was cooler earlier. 48 degrees, that temperature tumbling now, the wind coming in from the west at 14, gusting up to 21 miles per hour, that's after a cold front moved on by, the region earlier this evening. still getting down to the jersey shore. it got up to 61 earlier this evening, just two degrees off the record high that was set back in 1949. still, the average high is around 40 this time of the year so we were a full 21 degrees above that. much cooler tomorrow, it'll be near average, around 40 degrees, increasing clouds after some early sunshine. rain coming in tomorrow night for new york city and the coast, may mix initially with a little bit of sleet at the very onset of the storm but it

areas north and west a different story though. freezing rain and sleet can lead to icy spots, north and west of i-287 tomorrow night and tuesday morning, areas well north staying in the wintry mix before going to rain. temperatures falling into the 30s in places like monticello, 34 there, low 50s on the island, upper 40s on the jersey shore where you're getting a couple of showers over ocean county with that cold front pressing off to the south. the big story is the cooler air coming in behind it. you see by early tomorrow morning, 7:00 in the morning, temperatures around 40 in the city, closing to freezing areas north and west. i think we wake up to some sunshine. actually, sunshine for much of the morning and then the clouds really start lowering and thickening in the afternoon. 5:00 p.m., temperatures in the upper 30s in the city, still around freezing toward newberg and that's important because as that participation moves on in tomorrow night, we're well above freezing in the city and along the coast. that means even if we do get a

sleet mixing in with the rain, it's not going to accumulate or cause any road problems in and around the city. it's a different story north and west where you have temperatures, if anything, falling to 30, tuesday morning, the heavier precipitation moves in, in the form of freezing rain and sleet. that rain line finally moves pretty far off to the north tuesday morning, probably around i-84 before everything comes to an end tuesday morning and everyone rising above the freezing mark. cooler than recent nights definitely, clouds breaking, 39, down to the lower and middle 30s in many suburbs. sun giving way to afternoon clouds, much cooler tomorrow, 41. rain arrives tomorrow night, possibly mixed with a couple of ice pellets in the city, but a freezing rain and sleet only down to 38 in midtown manhattan. the rain tapering off by mid- afternoon tuesday, afternoon rain again on wednesday, 52. doesn't look like a heavy rain

and a man is in the hospital after he was hit by a car that crashed into a store in westchester county. the elderly driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. both she and the victim are expected to be okay and no charges have been filed. topping our news this half hour, dozens of people killed weather in the south and midwest. flooding in missouri and parts of oklahoma. in texas, a tornado rips through that state overnight leaving 11 people dead there. >> reporter: tornadoes exploding over these north texas suburbs. this one turning into a pillar fire as it blew up transformers. [sirens] >> that's a tornado! >>reporter: and sparking panic. the 11 people were killed in 11 locations. at least five died in the storm on i-30. >> it's crossing the highway right there. i can see it.

completely destroyed. and in the wreckage, we me norma giminez. she and five family members clustered in the bathroom during the storm. >> all of this can be replaced, we're are glad we're safe. >> reporter: people came through trying to pick out the few belongings they can still find but it has gotten 40 degrees colder than it was this time yesterday and with the rain coming down, making clean- up that much more miserable for the people here. in nassau county, brazen bank robbers hit the bank around 12:30 this afternoon. you can see one of them holding up the teller with the hand gun there. they got away with cash. there were other employees and customers in the bank but luckily, no one was hurt. police say an accused sexual predator is behind bars in new jersey tonight after his

the streets after the attack. willie banks is facing a string of charges, including aggravated sexual assault and robbery. he attacked a 22-year-old woman in hackensack last month. on christmas eve, that woman called police saying she had spotted her attacker. that led to bank's arrest. a bronx man accused of shooting his wife is in custody in maryland. police tracked down ralph herrera. he's accused of shooting his wife just feet from their children. the victim is recovering after being hit in the arm and the neck. the kids were not hurt. the parents of a high school football player from staten island who died after practice are suing the city. he died in 2014 after passing out at curtis high school. the medical examiner said he died of hypertrophic cardio myopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle. obesity was also said to be a

kirkland's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming a defibrillator wasn't readily available at practice. if you decide to get divorced, you better be sure about it, at least in new hampshire. the state supreme court has upheld a lower court ruling refusing to reverse a couple's divorce. they got divorced after 24 years of marriage and then sought to undo it after they smoothed things over. one lawyer defends the lower court ruling pointed out that undoing that divorce would cast doubt on the finality of all divorces. we're days away from saying goodbye to 2015 and hello 2016. tomorrow is good riddance day. that's where people can write down their bad memories from the last year and shred them in times square. today, we got an up-close look at the new year's eve ball, talking about welcoming in 2016. here's eyewitness news reporter andy field. .

boat thieves take the coast guard on a chase hundreds of miles. the ordeal began christmas morning near fort myers florida and crossed the gulf near new mexico. they tried to go after suspects in a high-speed vessel and it took off. the coast guard was keeping a close eye on it in the air and the water until they were able to arrest three suspects, and nobody was hurt. a raging wildfire in australia has wiped out more than 100 homes. the massive blaze in the state

broke out saturday. fire officials say cooler weather this weekend is helping control it but flames could burn for weeks. no one has been injured. and the video tonight of one of the animals rescued from the brush fires in australia, an aide worker gave this adorable koala a little bit of water after it was pulled from danger, apparently unharmed. this is just one of many animals receiving this kind of it is expected to be returned to the wild. . >> i don't think he's going to want to go. a british adventurer arrived in australia today after pulling off an amazing feat. he says he's the first person to row nonstop and alone across the pacific ocean from north america. 53-year-old john beaden set off from san francisco in june and spent 209 days at sea. he arrived in australia two months later than originally planned because of weather and

that same system heading our direction for tomorrow night, in a much weakened fashion but it will give us wintry weather ahead and west of new york city. one world trade, you see the brooklyn bridge on the right- hand side of your screen. temperature at 48 so that has fallen quite a bit in the past we have this northwest wind coming in about five miles per hour, and the temperature will continue tumbling overnight tonight. around 40, 6:00 in the morning, clearing skies, winds from the north 10-15. highs today up to 61. only two degrees off a record set in 1949. we did actually get a record at jfk airport, 62, bell mar, middle and upper 60s, and ocean new jersey, you're 48 in tom's river. freezing north and west of monticello so there's much cooler air sinking in behind that cold front and there's a winter weather advisory in effect from 8:00 p.m.

tuesday, mainly north and west of i-287, northwestern new jersey, hudson valley into interior parts of connecticut. the last few showers are exiting right now associated with that cold front. the cooler air is seeping in from the north. there's the storm causing all the havoc over the lone star state. that's moving off north and east and will be here by tomorrow night. just enough cold will be in place areas north and west of the city, so there won't be simply a rainfall event. we're talking freezing rain and sleet in these areas, well north and west where there could be treacherous travel. sleet mixed in with rain at the onset. we shouldn't have any icing issues in the five burroughs and along the coast. freezing rain and sleet can lead to icy spots into the tuesday morning commute. the transition to all rain will occur during the day on tuesday. here's the accuweather forecast for tonight.
