well we're in the last few days of december and winter has begun and we're finally getting a taste of it. here's an example of the outlining purple that goes until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. while there is some precipitation on the accutrack -- we're expecting just to 6:00 to see the beginning of precipitation. we fritter expecting to see a mix in the city that quickly changes over to snow. you can see in this larger picture that this system is very big. it is producing snow for parts of omaha and chicago and the pink indicating a precipitation. and ohio taking us into the the ohio and tennessee valleys. that is actually very heavy rainfall. so this wintery mix means where you are and what temperatures you have is exactly what you get.

we expect to be dry overnight. but an icy mix. problems with the roadway for the north and west. but the heavy rains spelling trouble for the afternoon and morning commute. i'll see you guys then. okay. amy thank you. now, to the developing story -- for the second time in a week and on the same mountain, two people were trapped on a steep ledge more than 250 over the ground. news competenter was seen her -- trying to get those two people down. kemberly richardson has been to the scene. kemberly, what's happening now? >>reporter: well diana, in the end, this was a success. the same high angle rescue team who is out in this park on a 911 call last week just wrapped up that operation. as you can imagine, 3 people not

the trio ended up trying to climb up the side of a cliff off the mountain. and they winded up getting stuck on a plateau 250 up. the terrain around them was extremely treacherous. the group was in no way, shape, or form prepared for hiking. the signs warning people to stay on the phrase. now, the young man in the group was able plateau on his own. but the two women couldn't. the rescue crews were able to reach the ladies. by then, they were cold and embarrassed but otherwise they were okay. >>reporter: how are you doing now? >> i'm great. i'm glad they came to save us. >>reporter: what happened? >> we decided to climb. and it was just unsafe to continue or come back down. >>reporter: so you couldn't go either way? >> no. not really.

>> they effectively went up and brought them down. but it's difficult. it's not a game as she acknowledges. if you're going to enjoy nature, enjoy it. do not fool around with it. it's like playing with fire. >>reporter: yeah. and it was a much different situation in this same park just last monday. a hiker fell off a cliff and was wedged between a tree and the side of a mountain for about 3 hours. he was injured and suffering from hypothermia but he was expected to be okay. back paragraph here live, this is a picnic area. there are no trails where this trio again scaled the rocky cliff on the mountain. they are okay. they declined to give their names but they each did receive a summons and will face a judge. for now, we're live, kemberly richardson channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you kemberly. for the first time, we're hearing the 911 calls from a

we heard how the animal went on attack in jersey. here's toni with those 911 calls. >>reporter: yes indeed. and you know, chris petrinino was lucky to escape with his life. he's lucky the three children who were with him stayed calm enough to get rescuers to his location and that is what you hear on these tapes. >> 911. where's the emergency? >> our leader was maude by a bear. >> okay. okay. >> i'm out of the cave. >> okay. you're out of the cave. but where are you sir? >> how bad are you injured? >> pretty bad. >> by this time, he has escaped the bear, gotten out of the cave and is in desperate need of medical attention after trying to fight off the bear. >> where are you bleeding?

leg or arm? . >> left arm. left leg. neck and head. >> it was december 20th. he was lifted to the hospital after spending what was felt like a lifetime shouting instructions to his son and other scouts to call 911 as he sat trapped in a cave he climbed into not aware it was a bear's den. the boys directing crews to their location at split rock reservoir. >> and what's going on? he can't get out? >> yeah. i think the bear's on top of him. >> the bear's on top of him? >>reporter: this was not an organized scouting trip. he was the only one there. police say he had apparently gone up to the cave before and this time taking the kids up to explore it. >> a black bear pulled his foot. the victim struck the bear twice in the head with a rock hammer. he then pulled a sweatshirt over his head and pulled himself into

>>reporter: he suffered wounds to his head but most importantly he survived and the kids were not injured. >>reporter: okay. so you heard the 911 call that chris was able to make. but it was actually the kids outside the cave with their own phone who made the first 911 call. you're going to hear that coming up at 6:00. for now, toni eye witness news. toni thank you. a toddler shot in the face in new jersey is at home tonight. police say he was sitting in a car on saturday when someone began shooting. a bullet struck him in the cheek and cut him under the eye. his family was a target of the shooting. no one has been arrested. we are learning new details about that deadly fire in brooklyn. police discovered a body of a

tonight, investigators are still searching for a cause. eyewitness news reporter is on the scene in williamsburg with details. >>reporter: well, at first it sounded like a car rumbling. so his girlfriend came outside to check on their car and that's when she said she saw this building was on fire. they called 911 and moments later they heard a loud boom. >> a big explosion and a big ball of flame -- i'm sure it was a gas line compromised by the fire or you know, it was terrifying. >>reporter: gabriel gal van says the flames were vicious. killing two people and leaving 10 residents homeless. the fire blazed through this fire department building just after 1:35 a.m. on richardson street burning all three floors and through the roof. theresa escaped barefoot and

she was wearing. >> i heard my amazing neighbor banging on my door. so i had to run towards the kitchen where the flames were. >>reporter: she says it took her 6 years to build her home but only 6 minutes to destroy it. >> i sleep with ear plugs, a sound machine and an eye mask so it took me a long time to wake up. >> large flames shooting out of the back. it was pretty violent already by the time i saw it. >>reporter: a body of a female victim was found in a second bedroom. firefighters located the body of a male victim in the basement. one firefighter suffered minor injuries. the arson squad believes the fire started on the first floor. the cause is still under investigation. >> a lot of floors were burned.

there's a good team in there and making paragraph a good effort. >> the identities of these victims have yet to be released. for this building, at some point it has to be demolished. stephen, thank you. a 3 thousand dollars wre ward is offered tonight leading to the arrest for suspects in a vicious beating and robbery in brooklyn. the video shows a 60 year-old victim being knocked to the ground. one of the suspects picks him up and punches him several times and goes through the victim's pockets. >> two animals. that's what i would call they may. to attack an individual and continue to attack the person to the point where he needed 70 to 80 stitches in his head. it's just unbelievable. >> the suspects got away with the victim's iphone and wallet.

this is not being investigated as a hate crime. >> a grand jury has declined to indict a police officer. the pellet gun the suspect was holding looked like the real thing. prosecutors say they showed footage of the suspect pinting a gun. he was accused of abusing and process. hundreds attended a ceremony honoring technical sergeant joseph lamb as his body was returned to the base this afternoon. the nypd detective is one of five service members killed in an attack in afghanistan last monday. he was remembered for his courage, character, the city that he served.

>> he was ensliend in the basketball hall of fame in 2003. the death of a man in westchester county -- david hughes was found with gunshot wounds on saturday. police say the shooting was not a random act but they have not identified a suspect or a motive for the crime. more tornadoes ravaged parts of texas. at least 11 people were killed by the tornadoes that swept through texas this weekend. it's estimated that more than 1400 homes were damaged or destroyed. 8 people were killed on the interstate by a massive tornado that crossed the >> and that same storm system caused flash flooding across the midwest killing at least 16 people.

21-degree wind chill. highs -- a lot more seasonal. we've gone from record setting to reality. so temperatures in the mid-40s fairly typical for this time of year. if you extremes, that's the number we would put on the board. barkshun there is the big change though. this drop-off of 25 to 26 degrees. and the cold air in place. but just not cold enough to see snow. there is a winter advisory through parts of new york and coastal connecticut. it's basically from 6:00 p.m. to about 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. so through new jersey and parts of hudson valley first. on the accutrack, you can see some activity here on the radar. but it's actually not hitting the ground just yet. very dry. going to take a couple hours for the precipitation to start actually hitting the ground. sleet at first in the city.

we'll see these balls of ice bouncing on the sidewalks. that doesn't last all night and changing by 9:00 p.m. more in the city. some icy spots with us through dawn. and then transitions to all rain tomorrow morning. this is important to remember because even though we change over to the rain, it could still cost a major problem because it's going to be a heavy rain that continues until 9:00 or 10:00 o'clock tomorrow morning. choosing a place like morristown, they stay throughout the night. temperatures looking to be at freezing. the services will not be frozen themselves. so even when the rain moves in tomorrow morning, it's just the amount of rain that's the problem. then the ice mixes in. the sleet. that's when we'll have the worst travel problem is the icing north and west of the city. through the mid hudson valley tricky spots later on. and once it changes to all rain, yellows throughout the map --

indicating the heaviest rainfall. holding on at least through about 11 or 12:00 tomorrow morning. and temperatures are back up into the 50s for a tuesday. wednesday we'll have a cool air mass. so high resolution shows these pockets of heavy rain. this is something that should really capture your attention. through the early morning commute, problems with the rainfall. getting up to an inch of rain. even an inch and a half through some spots of central new jersey. so that's a lot of water in a short amount of time. tomorrow's forecast, temperatures in the 50s by tomorrow noon. so no freezing lingering. wednesday a dose of rain in the afternoon. then sunny and mild on friday. then back into the 40s and seasonal on saturday. sunday is looking good at 43. 41 that's the average for this time of year. as we roll into the first few days of 2016, temperatures seem

police say they have made this case a top priority. >> it's outrageous. i don't know how we stop things like that. >>reporter: drivers say this is unthinkable. the car was headed on the street when someone threw a brick from this overpass. it crashed through the windshield striking the driver on the shoulder and blasting through his windshield with shards of glass. >> the front passenger was a 22-year-old female. she had damage to the corner of her eye from the glass. and the operator received a bruise to his shoulder. >>reporter: investigators obtained footage of the brick. a pedestrian overpass used by students from nearby can henburg memorial high school.

by other supplies by the school's landscapers. and investigators say it's apparently not the first time. broken bricks were found along the roadside and along the edge of the overpass. this afternoon, the bridge was shut down so a highway worker in a truck could clear the ledge of what was left. >> we want to make sure it doesn't happen again and right now, we would really like to find out who did it and make an arrest on the case. >> i'm glad everyone is okay. >>reporter: they say holiday driving is hectic enough without having to worry about this. >> no consideration for any individuals. those people could have been killed. that's right. >>reporter: and rotates have been stepped up here on the meadow brook. and police know where it came from. but finding the person who threw it will not be easy. anybody could have accessed that overpass.

surveillance cameras anywhere in the area. tonight, unionburg long island. n.j.. okay. n.j., thank you. new details about a customer who was injured. his family says surgery on his ankle this morning went extremely well. the accident was caught on camera. when the driver smashed through a front window of the store. the driver was not hurt and is now facing charges. now to a massive brawl at a long island bowling alley. left 6 people arrested and the police officers who responded injured. nassau county investigators say the fight was started at the lanes when curtis got into an argument with a woman. his assault got physical when five others joined the melies.

returning early from his family vacation in cuba, emmanuel is facing more calls after yet another police shooting. on saturday, officers killed two people while responding to a domestic disturbance. police say 19-year-old antonio was being combative and that his neighbor 55-year-old betty jones was accidentally hit by the gunfire. police are trying to figure out who is stealing baby jesus from the nativity scenes. a spokesperson says he hopes the threfts are just a prank. however, parishioners say they disrekts their face. >> this is the first time they have the nativity scene and the parishioners love this idea. they put their heart and souls into this project. investigators are calling

farmers until some christmas angels stepped in. a couple days ago, vandals opened a tank spilling out 2,000 gallons of milk. that milk worth about $500. but then a friend came to the rescue raising 6 times that amount online. as a result, the farmer will pay for the lost milk and will be able to install a security camera and new door for the well authorities have identified the man who fell from a cliff on christmas day. police say joshua fell from the cliffs in scenic san diego. eye witnesses say he was distracted by a phone or electronic device before going over the edge. the 33 year-old was visiting the area from indiana. a teenage boy spent 28 hours exposed to near zero temperatures and lived to tell about his ordeal. he went hunting with a friend saturday night.

here's the winter advisory in purple. areas through northwest new jersey and up to the connecticut valley. this is the area that we're expecting to see travel trouble from this system. the burr yohgz not -- burrows not included in that. the temperatures dropping off last night and tonight is still not enough to see snowfall. the temperatures in the teens and lower to mid-20s. feeling like 30s. the city just feels like 32 right now. certainly a chill. these numbers aren't cold enough to see the chill. many spots not making it to that 32 degree mark. in fact, right now on the accutrack, the precipitation is not making it to the surface. the atmosphere is just too dry. however this next batch up here showing up in pink just now

coming into the state, that's what we'll see -- a sleet state in the city first. and then wrapping up -- it's a big system. so first up, we will get that icy mix in the system then that icy sleet will hold up in the midwest -- and tomorrow morning, that's what's going to affect the commute. and could potentially create some trouble with a half inch to almost 2 inches of ralph coming in for before 2:00. that's a lot of moisture to contend with in a short amount of time. so by midday tomorrow. that's what we'll watch out for. timing again, before 9:00, we see sleet moving into the city. and moisture and oranges and reds indicating heavy rain throughout through the early part of the morning. temperatures will be in the low 50s tomorrow.
