>> i'm joe torres. moving moments from family members and many others who paid their respects to a man whose life was cut short. >> funeral services were held for sergeant louis bonacasa. he was killed in a suicide attack in afghanistan. eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff spoke with many of those who attended. >> reporter: hundreds attended the funeral service for air national guard member, 31-year- old staff sergeant louis bonacasa. his wife deborah and daughters lilianna paid their respects as his casket was carried into new beginnings church in long island. deborah wrote a home -- wrote a poem. >> our unconditional love measure to no skill. because of the lord's blessing, our daughter, i look at her and

funny too. >> reporter: she spoke about her desire to serve. sergeant bonacasa was outside to the air national guard 100 airlift wing. he had promised his family that his fourth tour of duty would be his last. he was one of six us service members killed when a suicide bomber attacked their patrol in a village outside bagram airbase in afghanistan. >> he was good at his job and loved what he did. he loved what he did because he wanted nothing more than to protect his family, his brothers in arms and his country. >> reporter: he's being called a children -- a hero. she had a poem tattooed to his body before he died. >> there will be times when daddy is not around. he will be somewhere with his boots on the ground. everyone at home is safe and sound. your freedom, my baby girl, daddy will die. as it turns out, lewis is a man of his word.

community are in morning. >> i'm so proud and honored to be your wife. thank you for sharing with me this beautiful life. >> reporter: a life that will be remembered and shared with a child whose father made the ultimate sacrifice. in long island, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> we have more pictures of staff sergeant louis bonacasa on our website. you can also find a photo gallery from the funeral for nypd detective joseph lemm, he was killed alongside bonacasa. a fire that tore through a new jersey home is under investigation tonight after firefighters found human remains inside the home. the fire happened yesterday on pershing road in clifton. reporter tim fleischer spoke with neighbors. he is at the scene tonight. tim? >> reporter: within five minutes or so, that house went up in flames. you can see behind me, it has been destroyed. it has been boarded up and is

investigation after a disturbing discovery inside. neighbors quickly called the clifton fire department. firefighters arriving on the scene. you can see in these pictures taken by a neighbor that it was moving very quickly through the house. the flames engulfed the entire house at one point on pershing road. police now revealed that the remains of an individual were found inside. they are not revealing the age or identity of the person. nevertheless this comes as you can imagine quite a surprise to neighbors. >> the house was fully involved -- engulfed within five minutes. sounded like something exploded in there. propane tank or something. as far as we knew, i didn't know if there was anyone in there or not. >> reporter: the medical examiner is also expected to

city at 39, 41 at laguardia, 28 at monticello. there's much colder air looking at now north of the us canadian border. eventually that error has eyes on the tri-state region as we head into the early part of next week. negative numbers north and west of hudson bay. we are going to get a direct shot monday into tuesday. overnight tonight, near freezing probably in the city, 20s in the suburbs. a windier day, so it won't feel quite as nice, high up to around 43. arctic air comes in monday and tuesday. we would tell you how low those temperatures go in your full forecast coming up later. sandra, over to you. wake with a shake. earthquake hits northern new jersey around 10 clock this morning and registered 2.1 on the richter scale. while that doesn't usually cause major tremors, police say they got about 50 calls right after it happened.

november, we got down to 32 this morning. so it is a little bit of a shock to the system. we had outside right now, the empire state building still in the holiday spirit tonight, looking pretty. dutiful sunset out there. 39 right now, winds from the west at seven miles per hour. the wind will pick up a little bit during the day tomorrow. today we probably get into the middle 40s. it will feel just as chilly because of that wind. just to compare everything, today's high was 40 after morning low of 32. normally we get up to 39 after a morning low of 28. even though it felt so cold, it was above average for this time of year. bright but breezy tomorrow, the big story is the arctic air arriving. monday into tuesday, this will be the coldest air of the season. temperatures struggling to get up to freezing on monday. it might be a day where temperatures fall through the 20s during the daylight hours.

by tuesday, 20s all day despite a little sunshine. 39 right now in newark, 37 avenue white plains. with the wind calming down overnight, mainly clear sky, that will be one of the knights where the suburbs get pretty cold especially north and west of the city. we had clouds around today, then we tended to clear out for a time, but north of the study -- north of the city state pretty calm. picking up enough moisture to spread cloud cover into the area, tomorrow is a little bit of a sunnier day. those tonight down to about freezing. 20s north and west, moorestown 24, sussex 23 at monticello, near freezing on the island, 34 down short in belmar. a few degrees warmer than today tomorrow, but it won't feel because of the wind out there, 44 for the high in the park.

arctic air before, first time this season air came directly across the north pole and makes a direct shot into the northeastern part of the country. the previous air masses have been coming west to east, that's modified by the pacific ocean, warmer waters, we haven't had true bona fide arctic air but that is about to change. monday, in here, tuesday the front is way off to the south. accuweather forecast for tonight, mainly clear, down to 32 in midtown, tomorrow a breezy day but bright, the high up to about 44, clear tomorrow night, we're down to 27 in the city, so even colder in the suburbs. arctic air starts filtering in tomorrow night, monday is breezy, colder, the high only up to 32. that might be before dawn. temperatures fall, could be a snow shower north and west of the city with the frontal passage. windchill during the day will stay in the teens. tuesday despite a lot of sunshine, only going to get up to 29. not as harsh on wednesday.

. ingrid peterson, channel 7 eyewitness news, cape girardeau, missouri. saudi arabia has executed 47 prisoners including a prominent cleric. iran warned the sunni led saudi monarchy would pay a heavy price for the death of nimr al- nimr. the killings are expected to deepen disconnect among the shiite minority and have already set off protests throughout the region. al-nimr had rallied protests against the government. he was shot -- convicted on terrorism charges. also executed were allocated detainees convicted of attacking foreigners and security forces a decade ago. indian forces appear to have secured a military base after an early-morning terrorist attack.

the base near the border with pakistan before dawn. they exchanged fire with troops for hours. officials say four gunmen were killed and 2 million military personnel died. by nightfall, troops were continuing to comb and secure the base. known for its elaborate costumes and strutting, tonight, controversy follows the annual mummers parade in philadelphia. there are accusations of intolerance against two groups for their displays in the new year's day parade. one group stressed -- dressed in typical mexican clothing and marchers wore brown makeup. a separate group showed a transformation from bruce to caitlyn jenner. with marches carrying signs of wheaties and froot loops. a member of the group also shouted expletives about gay people. >> this is wrong. that should not happen. like i said, there are thousands of members and if one guy who was drunk said that kind of a thing, that's not going to be tolerated.

people need to be cognizant of what they're doing. >> making matters worse, a man walking his dog says two men who appeared to be dressed for the parade shouted gay slurs at him and punched him in the face. more than 1200 new officers graduated from the nypd police academy this week. among them, three brothers. their father is a 30 year veteran of the force. he key reason why the brothers joined new york's finest. here is kemberly richardson. >> we really appreciate it. >> reporter: it was a first for the nypd. not the ceremony where more than 1100 cadets officially became police officers, what was downright unique, these guys. meet john, alex and stephen. this was the first time facing a swarm of media with good reason. the men are brothers. alek and john are twins. all three just graduated from the police academy. >> we're overjoyed and

when a supermarket on long island closed, a group of seniors started taking a shuttle to another store. costs started to head up. some had trouble affording the fair. so the owners of their new store stepped up to help bring them in. here is long island reporter kristin thorne. >> reporter: a shuttered grocery store may not seem like front page news, but to the seniors, it means a lot. >> it was everything. >> reporter: the closest supermarket now is nearly 2 miles away. the town of huntington put in a special bus route from the village senior housing development to the store in east northport, but round-trip is six dollars and that can add up. for the hundreds who live on a fixed income at the senior complex. now in a sort of late christmas present, the owner of the ig age store, charlie reichert, offered to pay indefinitely the

during the summer the goats are used to clean up vegetation on properties. during the winter, they are of course -- there isn't much work. so the farmer who owns a company called ghosts on the go in iowa hatched the plan to feed them christmas trees. it's not just a creative way to get rid of the trees. it's actually good for the goats. >> it gives the goats some variety. and christmas trees actually have tannins and them that help the goats deal with internal parasites that they are susceptible to. >> that's a lot of information. what makes this even better is there is no charge to drop off a tree for the goats. the owner of the company collects donations for a company called kids for kids. it donates baby goats also known as kids, to needy children in haiti. while we don't have a whole lot of trees and go to new york city, although there are a few, there is a solution for old christmas trees. the sanitation department will begin its annual tree cycling curbside collection on monday.

an icy start to the new year for some hearty minnesotans yesterday. organizers cut a long hole through the ice of a lake west of minneapolis. dozens of people jumped into the freezing water. they were raising money for wounded warrior project. >> not to be outdone, folks in milwaukee, wisconsin where lake michigan has not yet frozen over, polar plungers ran from the beach into the frigid water. the air temperature yesterday afternoon was around 20 degrees. still, hundreds of people took part. heartily. >> more power to them. [laughter] >> freezing for a reason. right? starting to feel a little bit more like winter around here. >> even more like the depths of winter as we head into monday and tuesday. going to feel really cold out there. coldest air by far since last february. as we head outside, take a look at the southern end of central park and midtown, temperatures are sitting in the upper 30s,

west around 7. that will freshen up a bit during the day tomorrow. even though tomorrow is milder than it was today, not going to feel that great with that wind out there. 38, temperature at 7:00. fall down into the mid-30s by midnight. early clouds giving way to clear skies in the diminishing wind overnight, suburbs will get quite a bit colder than urban areas. highs today up to about 40 in the park, that was a degree above average. such a shock to the system after the warm december. upper 30s were your highs north and west of the city. low 40s down the jersey shore. north and west, 28 at monticello, 35 in middletown, all of these areas will fall down into the 20s overnight down to 37, belmar. 36 right now at iceland. a lot cloud cover, in the city and points north. this is coming all the way from

mass grabbing moisture, caused a couple flurries in parts of the area yesterday. we did have clouds out there because of it. mainly clear for the time being south of the city. temperatures right now across this area, seasonable, but much colder north of the us canadian border. finally a real arctic plunge developing up here and this will move rapidly off to the south and east and be here during the days monday and tuesday. futurecast to the day tomorrow, midnight, 35 in the city, down into the 20s north and west. tomorrow, other than the breeze, no weather worries mainly sunny skies, temperatures back above average, 43 by 2:00, maybe upper 30s well off to the north. tomorrow night, into early monday morning when that front approaches. with the frontal passage, there could be a flurry or snow squall, especially north and west of new york city. look at that temperature at 8 am, if anything, the temperature might fall during the daylight hours.

strange moment during motley crue's final show. it happened during tommy lee's big drum solo. as you see there, he performs on a drum set mounted to a roller coaster track above the crowd. last night the coaster broke down, leaving lee suspended upside down at the staples center in los angeles. the road crew quickly freed the rocker who climbed down the state. lead took the incident in stride joking he can't believe it happened at the end of their farewell tour. >> why do i feel stranger things have happened to tommy lee? president obama took a ride with comedian jerry seinfeld and opened up about his favorite foods and former presidents. mr. obama appeared in seinfeld internet show comedians in cars getting coffee. the pair drove around the white house grounds and chatted about mr. obama's love of nachos. he also shared his favorite features of the presidential
